I've been held up in a hotel for a good 3 months now, working out of town. It's one of those extended stay places, so it's pretty comfortable. A full size fridge, stove top, etc. Housekeeping only once a week so I don't have to worry about people going through my stuff daily.

This morning I woke up and a bag of chips I had on my table had a hole gnawed in it, clearly the work of a small rodent. Rather than bug the front desk about it, and get maintenance involved, I just grabbed some cheap mouse traps and smeared a bit of peanut butter on it. I'll toss the bugger when it catches him.

Would you handle it yourself, or get the hotel involved?

The appearance of one rodent is possibly an indication that there is another problem that needs to be dealt with, likely something that is allowing access to others. I would probably inform the hotel even if I decided to deal with it myself. Which I wouldn't, because last time I was forced to deal with a mouse, I screamed and tried to squish it with a safe.

Well, at the very least the peanut butter covered trap will keep the rodent from going after my chips again. Now that I think about it, the first night I was here a few weeks ago there was a packet of dishwasher soap that had a hole in it, I thought it was a rodent, but didn't pursue it.

I'll probably let them know of the dead rodent when it's caught. But I don't really see it as indicative of a bigger problem. The hotel is surrounded by empty fields, the temperatures are bouncing between single digits and 40-60F. And the front doors are always opening/closing as people enter and leave the hotel. I wouldn't be surprised if a small mouse ran into the building at some time and has been sneaking around.

I'm just trying to figure out where about it would be hiding during the day. Cause it definitely can't get out of the room, the door has no cracks, not even light appears through it. I'm guessing the fridge or dresser.

We'll see tonight after I go to bed.

Yeah, you rarely have just one mouse. And chances are, it isn't isolated to your room. You should tell the desk even if you're putting traps down (and probably tell the desk you ARE putting traps down, so the maids know).

Housekeeping is once a week, so I won't have to worry about the maid coming in until Tuesday.

So at least tell them Monday, then. Smiley: lol

Either way, no harm in telling them, no?

Mice eat roaches. Roaches eat bedbugs. Bedbugs eat you.

Somehow, I'd be most comfortable with the mice.

Mice, not rats.

Thankfully I haven't seen any roaches, and my bedding is bed bug free.

Edit:
For some reason I'm now imagining the scenario where the mouse is some kid's pet that got loose and he's looking for it...

Check the dryer vent line if the room has a washer and dryer. They can get in and out that way. Keep in mind that a mouse can compress its skeleton down to rediculous sizes to fit in very tiny cracks. They also may be comeing in through holes where the plumbing lines enter the structure. check for traces of mouse ****. thats where it is getting in. It may also be living in the furnature somewhere.

Last time I had a mouse issue at my house, I put a peanut butter trap down behind the oven. Right after I placed it I was walking out of the kitchen to the living room and heard it snap. I thought to myself "Damn it, I didn't set it right". Went to reset the trap and sure enough there was a mouse in it. Only about 90 seconds after I had placed it behind the oven.

I placed the trap by the fridge and went to dinner with coworkers, not lucky enough this time to have caught it that fast. Got back to the room and no mouse :(

Tell the staff. There's probably some health law thing that says they need to do something about it, even if you've already started the solution.

Grab the TV and throw it through the window into the pool while you're under the influence of enough drugs and alcohol to kill a whale.

Driving your car into the pool is also acceptable, even better if it's an indoor pool.

Kid won't learn responsibility if you don't bludgeon the thing's skull in, and use popsicle sticks to crucify it in the middle of the hallway.

I'd feel bad killing the mice and would probably just end up feeding them.

Sneak in a cat.

Edit - honestly, you should let the hotel management know as it might be symptomatic of a larger problem.

We took care of a couple of mice in our place, and never bothered to inform anyone. There were 3 of them, the snap traps with a touch of peanut butter worked beautifully, and we haven't had any problems since. If it's just a couple of mice, no biggie, it happens. If you're catching them nightly for a week or something, then let someone know.

Or bite off the head and leave the body on the managements' doorstep as a gift; an expert mouse catcher told me people like that.

Just tell the hotel and let them bring in a professional. Please, as a hotelier, I ask that you let them know so they can make sure it isn't a bigger issue.

Once I had a mouse problem in a little dumpy apartment I lived in. I got a cat. She was lovely. Her name was Arrow.

She would catch the mice easily, but then she'd just play with them. She' bat them around. She'd sit very still and wait for them to try and run away and then pounce on them - again and again. The mice would always ****. I'd often end up locking the cat in the bathroom so the mouse could escape. I just couldn't stand to watch the torture.

I find it oddly entertaining. They sure like to stretch out the mouse's death though, prodding and poking the mouse if it's given up hope and stops escaping. It can take a couple of hours before the mouse is actually dead but you know it'll never survive once the cat has gotten it once.
