Just for you.

Quote:
The site in the outback in Queensland is thought to contain up to 50 diprotodon skeletons which could be between 100,000 and 200,000-years-old.

Lead scientist on the dig, Scott Hocknall from the Queensland Museum in Brisbane, said one of the specimens, called Kenny, was one of the largest diprotodons he had ever seen.

Kenny's jawbone alone is 70cm (28 inches) long.

Pigeon-toed and with a backward-facing pouch large enough to carry an adult human, Mr Hocknull likened a diprotodon to "a cross between a wombat and a bear but the size of a rhinoceros".

That's reason enough to start trying to clone them.

It really depends on the particular SP reference. Killing Kenny is old and tired, but if someone made a reference to a newer meme of theirs, I'd probably laugh.

Wombat parties are legendary, and often end in natural disasters unfortunatly. Krakatoa? Wombat high school spring break, class of 1883. The australian desert? used to be a lush oasis until a wombat polka band convention just HAD to go and see what would happen if you have 450,000 acordians play a D# minor chord simultaniously. Hurricane Katrina? Well, that was me, but you get the idea...

It does tend to eliminate the "who's paying the party tab" question at the end of the party though. Makes planning invasions problematic though to be honest.

No, I just cause weather disasters on vacation. Every time I go somewhere, there is always, and I mean always to the point of statistical rigor, a disaster happens almost directly proportional to the amount of time I was there. I visited New Orleans 1 week before Katrina hit, and stayed ofr a week. I was in houston for several years. almost the exact time to the day after I had moved away, Houston got hit with a major hurricane. Prescott? severe storms and wildfires. Chicago after Allanois? Severe flooding.

I'm actually legally barred from visiting certain NATO treaty countries and military sites at this point...

How did they justify that? Did they fly you over some random countries and see if tornadoes/floods/Godzilla appeared?

If you ever find that you have to travel to Scandinavia, please don't travel via Denmark. While a major natural disaster might be front page news in the US, it would effectively erase us from the map here. I'm not even kidding.

Comment by Joshupeterson (from the USA) in one of the SATW comics:
Quote:
This reminds me of U.S. border issues awhile back.... totally unexpected to a lot of Americans, and I found it hilarious.

Our previous president G.W. Bush wanted to try to build a concrete wall seperating the U.S. from Mexico. The plans were already passing through congress, and then... Mexico sent the U.S. with a message saying, "If you build that wall, we're calling in your debt." Turns out Mexico had been quietly and subtly buying up as much of the U.S.'s debt as possible. Turned out they had, without anyone realizing, managed to get majority ownership of the U.S. debt.

I'm just imaganing this scene:
America: "Get off my lawn Mexico..."
Mexico: *walks off quietly*
-next day Mexico is standing on America's lawn-
America: "I told you to get off my lawn!"
Mexico: "Sorry, I was just admiring your new car... you had your house mortgaged for it, I suspect?"
America: "I know you, you're just going to steal my car, aren't you? Now get off my lawn before I kick you off of it!"
Mexico: "Actually, I bought your mortgage. It's MY lawn."
America: *has an anyuresm*

I just find this weird and interesting. WHO in Mexico owns the US bonds? If it is the Mexican government, and they are in surplus, can't they make living conditions in Mexico better? Or are things in Mexico better than the stereotype suggests? Or is Mexico sticking to a conservative ideal of very small government, and lo and behold trickle-down economics don't work as intended? Or is it that Anyone-Who-Wants-To-Work-Will-Be-Empirically-Able-To-Work-And-Be-Justly-Rewarded doesn't work as intended either? Or is corruption an issue in Mexico that is keeping many people poor?

EDIT: I went looking for Mexico's ownership of US public debt. lolwikipedia doesn't think Mexico is in the top 15 owners of US debt. I'm now assuming that that perhaps Mexico owns 0.5% of US debt, but even that's enough to make the USA want it NOT called in if at all possible to avoid.

Huh, that's interesting. I hadn't heard of that before. I'd be interested to know how Mexico managed to purchase our debt as well.

My freshman year in college, my mom bought us a vacation to Manzanillo for Christmas. The travel agent booked us at a resort that was for the rich Mexicans though, not for tourists from other countries. It was interesting walking around the town. The few houses we did see, had walls surrounding them, with broken off glass bottles glued to the tops so people couldn't climb over them without getting seriously hurt. Most of the housing we saw looked more like shacks than actual houses. I know observations from a 19 year old white girl aren't exactly official fact, but from what I noticed, it seemed like the issue there is a wide income disparity gap. The rich are really rich, and own the vast majority of wealth in the country, and everyone else is just scraping by. I honestly wouldn't be surprised if we ended up like that in this country within 50 years, if we don't do something soon. It's pretty scary.

it may be shorthand for not "rolling over" your investment, by not buying into the next tranche of bonds issued.
