So my wife is in labor right now, but her water hasn't broken and she's not dilated enough to get things started. I missed work yesterday thinking the baby was going to be born then, spending all day at the hospital walking up and down the halls with my wife. (They told her to walk for a few hours and that would somehow help things.)

After we left, her contractions got worse so I took her back to the Labor and Delivery ward and we walked around some more and had the doctors stick their hands up her vagina again to check her cervix. Apparently there is some scale between 1 and 10, and 4 is the magic number in which they would have her stay until the baby is born. Well, it was at 3, so we got sent home again. That was 24 hours ago.

I thought for sure the baby was going to come out last night. I'm assuming it will be any day now.

Anyway, what should we name him? Smiley: grin

Anyway, congrats Kuwoobie. I know I give you a hard time a lot, but so long as you remember you're a dad first, and everything else second, you're going to be fine. And don't worry about screwing your kid up, that's a guaranteed for all of us.

That scale measures how much the cervix is dilated (the number is how many centimeters). When it's at 3 or less, it can take a while to progress, or stall completely for an extended period. 4cm is kind of the "point of no return", as things start speeding up after that and the baby will be coming out soon. 10cm is considered fully dilated and that's when they have you (or your wife in this case) start pushing. If her water doesn't break by 6cm or so, they'll probably do it themselves to move the process along.

Some friends of mine played with acronyms when naming their boy. Their surname starts with N so they called their son Benjamin Edward. His initials are B E N, which is also short for his given name.

Just, whatever you name him, actually call him that, ok? You can call him, like Dave if his name is David, but don't go around calling him Alex because his middle name is Alexander.

My first name is my dad's name, but my middle name is a name my mom liked. Well, I've always been called by my middle name. It was a pain in the ass in grade school. Every year, I would tell the teacher that yeah, my name says that on the role. No, I don't go by that. I go by this name. Ok?

They wouldn't get it down until at least two weeks later.

My son was born this mroing 1.5 hours after the doctor manually broke my wife's water with some sort of green plastic hook thingy.

I had no idea it would happen so fast. At first I thought she was just having unusually painful contractions (she had been having contractions for 2 days prior) so painful that she began behaving like a maniac screaming obscenities and pleading for me to make them stop. All I could do was hold her hand and tell her to relax. The plan was to get an epidural in her spine for a painless birth, but by the time the anesthesiologists came with their cart the baby's head was already coming out. We were very shocked, and very quickly the room became full of nurses and just seconds later the baby was out.

There was lots of blood and a little poo, but it wasn't bad at all. I am happier today than I have ever been in my entire life.

Oh yea, POIDH
