Who sees someones computer with 8 toolbars across whatever browser they're using and you have to stop the urge to stab them in the head with the nearest scissors?

I just delete the shortcut to IE and watch them panic.

Call me biased, strange I know, but being in the tech world for a living I just see this and for whatever reason it rubs me the wrong way.

My sisters ended up doing that to my parent's PC.
I don't even know why I try to fix up their PC, when I know they'll just fill it with clutter again...

I look after the laptops at work, I wish stabbing people in the head with scissors was allowed. I think there should be some sort of basic competency test before you're allowed to use a computer.

Yeah, but the same thing can happen for jay walking, so you might as well go in for an impressive crime.

You have no idea.

So far my favorite person I've been able to deal with is the "I spent a semester as a CS major and now I know everything guy."

Had one come in a while back like this who was adamant on the fact that his pc had a virus and he had scanned it and couldn't find anything. I spent 5 minutes booting into safe mode, installing and running malware bytes and let it scan. Found about 30 infections over the scan and then I sat on his machine for an extra day just because he was a know it all ****.

Moral of the story: PC techs are usually trolls.

It's the latest craze I guess. Everything has to have it's own toolbar that sneaks its way onto your computer somehow or another. I find myself removing them more often than one should...

I have got to watch the Boondocks.

Whenever my mom calls me to help with her laptop, I open up Internet Explorer to see half the screen covered with toolbars. I somberly disable as many as I can, knowing that like some kind of hideous hydra, by removing one you only allow two to take its place upon your return.

That's why I don't jaywalk. Smiley: tongue

Well, that and the fact that around here, people will run your *** over before noticing you're on the road if you're not near a crosswalk.

The good news is that eventually you will reach a point in that career path where this doesn't happen very often and people will actually defer to your experience instead of insisting that they know better than you do about your job. I still occasionally get someone who'll question why we put restrictions on fileserver space when "I could just buy a couple terabyte disk at Fry's for a hundred bucks!", but that's about it.

Then again, I work with civilized operating systems and don't deal with viruses.

I've only been doing this for two years now and we're still a pretty small upstart company so the pc tech stuff is great filler in between our project work. But yes, I have a few customers that are like that and they are probably the best people to work with. When conversations with companies end up in them basically opening a check book and handing a blank check to us and saying "Do what needs to be done." I'm sure they love seeing my face when it looks sort of like this.

Depending on policy requirements, I usually go ahead and advise them to do just that. Go buy your terabyte USB hard drive, and use it all you want. But don't come back to me asking for a restore when **** goes haywire and your job is on the line.

I switched my dad's wireless router from wep to wpa2 sometime back cause he's a beyond paranoid when it comes to his computer. Well little did I know he doesn't broadcast his ssid from his router cause it's "more secure." I got this phone call a few days later which he just pretty much yelled into the phone about how I broke his wireless router and I need to fix it immediately.

Even after I explained to him that he would need to reconnect to the wireless manually once because the security changed and the computer sees it as a new ssid he claimed I broke it and forced me to put it back to wep.

He uses zonealarm still as a firewall and I'm pretty sure he's stuck on how awesome he thinks adaware is, I'm such a proud son.

EDIT @ Joph: Turn that **** off. Odds are you don't need Java Release 6 Versions 1-29 as it is.

Ditto. I also can't get him to stop using Norton (it was McAfee before that).

I know more than most FE's and some IT people... I HATE calling the help desk because I have done everything they suggest. Then I wait on the FE who can't help me because if it isn't network related (or that my computer is ANCIENT) I have fixed it already. Some of us do know better.

What is wrong with Norton (I didn't pay for mine, but it "runs out" in 30 days so I'll need to get something else or renew the license)

If I'm not mistaken, Norton is the suggested anti-virus software of our very own, Kaolain.

I hate Norton. I deal with a very very ****** set up of Symantec with one of my customers and it doesn't do anything it is supposed to do. I don't like McAfee either because it works, but too well. It's like an over protective mother and dealing with the UAC in windows is annoying enough. Next in line is Kaspersky because it's caused nothing but troubles for me with another customer and their Acronis backups, plus during any session I have onto their machines through gotoassist it won't let me turn it off because it disables all access to it while during a remote session.

Which leads me to what I use and love because it does what it's supposed to do. AVG.
#26 Nov 16 2011 at 9:48 AM Rating: Good
Last night, AVG said that one of my R packages had a virus. Not just me, but a few other folks in the class too. Had to disable the antivirus to do our assignment...
