I'm not quite drunk yet, but tipsy enough that I, perhaps, shouldn't make a thread.

But I am. Yay for making bad decisions while drinking!!

So my husband is in Hawaii and I'm still in Tennessee. It's been a month and a half since I've seen him, and that was only for a week. I leave in a month and a week to join him, and I'm starting to get... apprehensive. I'm going, no doubt about that. I don't know how many people get this chance. But I'm so terrified about leaving my friends and family. It's going to be so hard...

So. Now that I'm officially getting tipsy (and probably good and drunk by the time the night is over) alone, am I an alcoholic...? Smiley: frown

Nah, I wouldn't say that makes you an alcoholic.

That's a crazy amount of time to have to stew over it. It'd probably have been easier on you if it was one of those whirlwind things and you moved right away, when he did. But at least with modern networking outlets, it's really easy to keep in touch with friends and family long-distance. Plus you give them all an exotic location to have a reason to visit!

Part of it is my fault, part of it timing. I really want to stay here until Thanksgiving because we have family coming down from MI, which NEVER happens. I want to be here for that.

And I wanted to give work enough time to get used to me leaving. I was there for eleven years. I'm hard to replace.

Of course, I could've just been there for a month and I'd be hard to replace. Smiley: grin

And I'll probably drink way too much tonight. I just found that they think my cousin has Crohn's disease. Smiley: frown Sad.

Ok, then as a rule of thumb, if there is more Baileys than coffee in your Irish coffee, then you're probably an alcoholic.

Hmm.. I could have sworn they did but I can't seem to find it on the internet. Maybe it was a generic Irish cream-flavored whipped topping or something.

Cream, yes. If you're ever in the San Francisco area, you should go to the Buena Vista and have one. It's a little cliche and touristy, but they make a really good one.

Yes, usually they have whipped cream on them. I just pointed out the sugar because I've known people that try to make their own just using Irish whiskey and coffee. Blech. Gotta cut some of that whiskey taste just a tad.

What kind of insane person puts Baileys in Irish coffee? Coffee, brown sugar and whiskey until you can't taste the coffee. That's Irish coffee.

On workdays I skip the sugar.

I thought the cream floated because of the... you know... lower density. I may be wrong, I never paid much attention during physics anyway, but I think that's why oil floats on water as well.

Dissolving sugar in a medium makes the medium more dense, so the cream would be comparatively lighter.

That is correct. That is also how the cream (or coconut milk, depending on the recipe) floats on Thai iced tea - because there's so much **** sugar in it, it's like syrup on the bottom.

But cream has a lower density than water to begin with. Adding sugar would be redundant if the purpose was to make the cream float. I'm not saying adding sugar doesn't help, I'm just saying I think the sugar is there for the taste.
