Low axe skill early on?Follow

I took BST to 17 recently and am thinking of taking it to 75. Most of it has been pretty straight-forward; target DC-EMs, etc etc. However, my axe skill us pretty low for 17. I think it's like 4-5 levels behind, which isn't bad, but with not fighting with my pets at so early, I wouldn't be shocked that it stays that way.

IS this normal? Being a solo friendly job, I wouldn't imagine that it would be hard to fix. Just wanting to make sure.

If you occasionally take em mobs and fight tough enemies, you'll hit your skill cap easy enough. At least I did.

I have always fought with my pet. To do this without grabbing oodles of hate from your pet, you do need to gimp your weapon a bit. Like you, I mostly fight DC/EM pets with the odd T or VT thrown in for fun (read: getting too cocky to live much longer). Instead of upgrading my weapon as soon as I can get a new one, I wait about 2 or 3 levels before equipping it. I also find using VIT and EVA items helpful for when I do steal hate.

I'm not sure what your subjob is, but I tend to mostly use WHM. After sending in my pet, I usually wait for it to hit the prey once or twice, toss out a Dia then come in swinging as well. I would use other enfeebles but they tend to be resisted more often then not so I don't bother wasting the MP.

It's normal for any job if you aren't fighting EM or higher mobs regularly. Combine that with levels that come relatively quickly, and you typically won't have capped skills on low level jobs.

In the long run, you usually wind up using DC-EM pets against Ts or so, and in doing that you'll easily cap out Axe.

Thanks for all the replies. I think I'm just going to start fighting with my pet. Being that I'm still pretty new to BST, most guides I've read said it's not a good idea, but I still do fight with my beastie for the last few hits or if I pull an unfortunate link.

Guess I'll try tossing Dia after my pet gets a few hits in. I do normally use /WHM, so I'll have to give it a shot.

If you have the spare MP, always toss Dia on your prey....since it is a % reduction in defense, the higher the level of the prey the more defense is reduced.

(It is a straight % reduction in defense, right? Please say I'm right.)

It'll level up soon enough. IT depends what you are fighting. IF fighting bombs or BLM's you might not want to melee so theres some levels it will fall behind. Then theres camps where you usually have DC-EM pets and go after T mobs fairly often that you are able to melee. You get lots of skill ups fairly quickly. I even alternate sometimes and bring a Scythe along and level that too.

Yep yep. Dia is 5.27% and Dia II is 10.35% defense reduction (27/512) and (53/512) respectively.

I wouldnt worry too much, skills will catch up quickly enough, there are certain level ranges where almost every BST falls behind a few levels on their axe skill (Bomb camps come to mind), but thankfully its probabally one of the better jobs for getting your skills back up to scratch.

Big perk with BST is its so skill up friendly, you can pretty much solo skill up any weapon you want as BST or /BST.

Since dinging 75 I havent needed a single skill up pt on any of my jobs, as I can just go to the tree ***/BST and skill up at my own leisure, which is a god send in this day and age of level sync and underlevelled skills.

No reason not to melee along side your pet really, you might pull hate here and there but you're going to have to learn to juggle that eventually anyway. If you find yourself really struggling with it just pick up an axe with a low damage rating, it'll still do more damage than not meleeing at all.

I was going to suggest you mix in a scythe every once in a while also to keep that skilled since it can be more of a pain to play catch-up with than an axe is, but I see from your sig you have DRK leveled, so I suppose that shouldn't be an issue.
