Should I level 30-75 as /nin? Or 30-60 as /drg then 60-75 as /sam? (Whichver would be "best" or get me to 75 the fastest. War would be my first 75 you know.) I have the wyvern earring so the war/drg thing is cool. But if war/nin's better, cool with that =P

Also..

/thf and /nin are a given for endgame subs. Is /sam or any other good as well?

Damage wise, /DRG 30-50 is the best. Then /SAM 50-75. FROM A PURELY DAMAGE POINT OF VIEW, before that can of f*cking worms opens again.

/NIN is always useful to have, so you'll need to level it as well. This will be your most used sub because that's how parties work now.

/THF is for when your tanks suck without SATA WS' being dumped on them. In a NON-EXP SITUATION, PROBABLY SKY ONRY. Again, to avoid that can of f*cking worms.

Gee Nil, you sure do worry about worms a lot.

I thought it would have been crabs that bothered you.

While I agree with nil on the sub choices, I do disagree with the statement of the tanks sucking if they need SATAWS's to keep hate. On certain mobs it is either extremely useful or simply much safer if tanks are getting SATA'd onto. Now sometimes this is due to DD's going a little too heavy, but if some or all of them can dump hate onto the tanks every minute, this frees them to go balls out for the other sections of the fight. You dont HAVE to SATA every WS, just dump every other one if you are building TP that quick.

Basically I just didnt like this statement because I have seen many situations where having some melee's /thf really helped out. For example, against Odin we would bring 2-3 Melee DDs (those that did not have a more useful job against Odin) /thf after we had some problems with the Rng's going apesh*t and pulling hate often. After we had a couple /thf's SATA'ing onto our tanks this happened much less frequently and allowed for our RNG's to push their damage higher than they could otherwise.

Agreed, but /THF for levelling is still total shite so Nil's not exactly wrong.

Personally, I did /NIN straight to 75 'cause I did WAR in a static and was dual tanking with another WAR/NIN.
For pickup XP, you probably won't find many who would fuss at you for showing up /NIN, and far more that'd request that you do.

IMO, you should expect to tank at least part time on WAR. If you're doing a good job, you will. Don't care what tanks you've got. When (not if) you pull hate, you should have a plan to deal with it that doesn't just rely on having a few hundred MP dumped on you.

/SAM is very solid 70+ for Seigan/Third Eye. I still weigh pros n' cons with /NIN, since Utsu and TE do differ, but either nets you a method of damage mitigation.

Yeah /THF is good for several melees at DI, since most of your damage is just from people running off and TPing on low level mobs then running back with an SAWS.

Depends on how many RNGs or CORs you have.

^_^ okay thanks for all the info and help everyone. I'm sorry that my topic about the f'ing can of worms Nilatai referred to. Opened the can up again.

One last question though:

If say I have enough money to get a maneater and a woodville's axe before40/50 (200k for manny and 50k for woody)

+ the 700k for the wyvern earring.

Would it be better to get the two axes (already have the earring) and save em for when i'm the required level for them.

Or just use the gil on gear ( Luisant haubert=300k on my serv) and such I'll need to level?

(the wyvern earring's sold soon as I hit 50 on war.)

Save up for Haubergeon. Don't bother with Luisant haubert unless you are swimming in the gil. It just means that you'll have to upgrade every so often between 45 and 59. You can sell it back, but in the end it doesn't matter, nor is it as important as a Haubergeon.

Don't worry about Maneater and Woodville till you are closer to the level to use them.

I wouldn't worry about pre-buying axes.

Not to open another can of worms, but, many WARs tend to stick with Great Axe most of the time now. Post-2h updates, it's just plain easier to get good results out of.
An alternate to that would almost better be Polearm for all the pink birdies you'll wind up fighting.

Of course, having a variety of weapons skilled and available may be part of what you enjoy about WAR. I wouldn't say not to ever skill/carry axes. Just that you did mention WAR would be your first 75...so there are probably a myriad of other things you could invest that gil into that you'd use all the time. With level sync, it's probably going to be annoying enough to keep GAxe leveled, much less Axe and whatever else as well.
