I wouldn't worry about pre-buying axes.

can of worms, but, many WARs tend to stick with Great Axe most of the time now. Post-2h updates, it's just plain easier to get good results out of.
An alternate to that would almost better be Polearm for all the pink birdies you'll wind up fighting.
Of course, having a variety of weapons skilled and available may be part of what you enjoy about WAR. I wouldn't say not to ever skill/carry axes. Just that you did mention WAR would be your first 75...so there are probably a myriad of other things you could invest that gil into that you'd use all the time. With level sync, it's probably going to be annoying enough to keep GAxe leveled, much less Axe and whatever else as well.
