Quick Question concerning Fan DanceFollow

I'm still in the process of levelling my DNC to 75 and prepping it for merits. The question I had is in regard to Fan Dance and if it has the ability to stack its Physical DMG reduction with equipment. Does the equipment stack with Fan Dance while at it's low point of 20% DMG reduction?

If I were to make, for instance, two of the -Physcial DMG daggers (-10%) and use a Patronus Ring in Campaign (-10%), Jelly Ring (-5%), and Denali Hands (-2%) could I have a stacked physical damage reduction of 47% at the Fan Dance low point?

Does equipment get counted after the Fan Dance check? Has anyone done a test with 1000 Needles that would suggest that this stacks (at least to the 50% point)?

I have a feeling that it may stack, but follows the same DMG reduction cap of 50% unless you've exceeded it with Fan Dance.

So my question is, can I get my damage reduction to work like this if I use equipment and the ability for the five minnutes it's up or is it done as a separate check?

Fan Dance starting at 90, would the DMG reduction effectiveness in Campaign reduce in this fashion?
-90%, -80%, -70%, -60%, -50%, -47%, -47%, -47%, -47%, -47%, etc.

Can someone correct me if my understanding is incorrect?

Sentinel works separately from -PDT gear, so my assumption would be that Fan Dance does too. Not certain though

Can you go deeper into what you mean by this? I'd test this myself, but I'm not there yet, lol.

I hadn't ever tested, but I wanted to know if a fully reduced Fan Dance (20%) and another 20% in gear would make something like 1000 Needles return a damage of 600 (40% reduction) or if the physical damage reduction is checked after the damage reduction on Fan Dance.

Example 1, Fan Dance and Phys DMG Stack?
1000 Needles
1000 - 400 (40%) = 600 DMG

Example 2, Fan Dance check first or second, Phys DMG checked first or second?
1000 Needles
1000 - 200 (20%) = 800 DMG
800 - 160 (20%) = 640 DMG

My Phys DMG decay was kinda represented wrong in my post above.
90, 80, 70, 60, 50, 50(40(+27)), 50 (30(+27)), 47 (20(+27)), 47, 47, 47...and so on.

I'm just interested in seeing if DNC can swing a high physical DMG reduction build using Fan Dance to supply the additional 20% boost while dual wielding two 5% DMG reduction daggers

Well, this is what wiki says about Sentinel:

Quote:
* When combined with equipment that reduces physical damage, the damage reduction from the equipment is applied separately. (i.e. while Sentinel is active and you have an Earth Staff on, if you are hit by 1000 Needles, it will be reduced by 90% to 100 Damage, then the remaining damage would be reduced by an additional 20% bringing the total damage to 80.)

If Fan Dance worked like this, it would follow Example 2 of yours, not 1.

There's no definitive indication that Fan Dance works the same way, but I'm betting it does (just with a damage reduction that decays with hits taken instead of time).

On a semi-related note, has anyone tried going DNC/PLD for lulz and seeing how Fan Dance and Sentinel would combine together, if at all?

About Fan Dance + Sentinel, here's a very fast test just for you Fyn:

Test #1:
Target: Lesser Colibri. 82 xp at 75 with sanction up.

Normal Damage dealt: 58, 67, 64, 57
*Fan dance activated*
Damage dealt: 7, 8, 10, 18, 33, 42, 34, 58 (<< at this point I hit 20% redux from fan dance)
*Sentinel activated*
Damage dealt: miss, miss, miss, 16, miss, 15, miss (I left the miss so you can try to guess sentinel's % based on delay at this point)
*Sentinel wore off*
Damage dealt: 43, 57, 32
*Pecking Flurry for 37*
Damage dealt: 31, 34, 37

Test #2, this time with more evasion- equipment. Also facing backward to let it deal damage longer.
Target: Lesser Colibri. 80 xp at 75 with sanction up.

Normal Damage dealt: 62, 51
*Fan dance + Sentinel both activated*
Damage dealt: 0, 2, 3, 10, 8, miss, 21
*Sentinel wore off*
Damage dealt: 32, 90 (crit & at this point I hit 20% redux from fan dance), 36, 28, 43, 40, 57, 26, 48, 56, 47, 24, 57, 45, 34, 39, 51, 52

It seems to me like they stack nicely. It's 2 AM, so I'm not really in the right mindset to figure out how they act together though. Someone more awake or qualified can try to guess from the damage I reported above :P

If anyone cares to know, I had Protect 2 up, and therefore 308 defense in the gear I was using during the test.

Interesting stuff. Yeah, that 0 damage hit tells me that they likely combine somehow; Sentinel by itself can't get a 100% damage reduction unless you've got that piece of PLD relic that enhances it.

Sometime when I'm bored, I'm going to try them out vs. a cactuar's 1000 Needles >_>

1,000 needles vs Dancer with Fan Dance (had 3 mobs on me to make sure it was depleted) and Earth staff dealt 640 damage.

80% * 80% = 64%, so they are multiplicative.

With a cap on PDT 50%, my question right now is, would a dancer hit a cap of 60% (80% * 50% = 40%)

My earlier test with sentinel and the fact fan dance itself breaks the 50% cap (it starts at 90%) do not prove, but hint that it would.

With 50% PDT gear and a fresh fan dance, you'd take 5% of a mob's normal damage.
