How viable is BLU for first job to 99?Follow

I am returning after quitting for a few years, back when cap was 75. I loved BLU. I recently made a new account. How viable is it, for the first job you get to 99, to be BLU?
it's viable to take any job up to 99. If you loved blu back in the day... then take it to 99 or another job of your choosing that you love to play. Don't let other people dictate to you as to how to play the game or what jobs to play, unless they are paying for your subscription

Extremely viable.
BLU99 will take a bit more work than any other job, since you'll have to take constant breaks to skillup and farm spells, but there is nothing stopping you from taking it straight to 99.
Most sea spells are either irrelevant or available elsewhere these days: Saline Coat (situational) and Disseverment are the exceptions. Disseverment has fallen out of favor in abyssea, but outside of abyssea it's still a very competitive spell.
BLU was my first 99 on my last character, and I'll say that it is one of the best jobs 'out of the box.' You don't need amazing endgame gear for it to start shining, as you can build a very powerful physical nuke set with just AF and AHable gear. Your melee will lag behind until you gear up (a strong haste/DA/etc set is harder to build than a strong physical nuking set), but it'll shine in time. A normal 'melee' will just be all around lame until they gear up, as they lack the ridiculously powerful spells to fall back on.
Basically: If you're in a rush to catch up to friends, don't play BLU as your first job, because you'll burn yourself out grinding spells. Otherwise, go for it. The only downside to BLU these days is the massive effort it takes to spellfarm.

To me, collecting the spells made BLU fun. Now to get a pass to Aht Urghan to unlock it. Thanks for all the info.
The downside is it takes longer than most jobs - (unless you really want to suck) - the upside is that if you are totally new that will give your abyssea stone stockpile time to grow while you level, and if you are consistently going after your spells you will be way closer to being at skill cap than most people first taking a job up, making you suck less from the very beginning.

Yeah according to blue gartr temporal shift is a lightning proc for blu in voidwatch - and wiki only lists al'taieu as locations for getting it. Another annoying one will be Actinic Burst since it is only avail in Abyssea in the form of a T2 VNM (apparently not very soloable)

One small (and I do mean small) point against going BLU first to 99 is the Raubahn fight to go from 70 to 75. It's not that it's hard, exactly, but it can be a royal pain in the ass. Especially as compared to a fight like PLD, for example. Your mileage may vary and it shouldn't completely dissuade you, but it's definitely worth keeping in mind.

Blue was my first job taken to 75 back in the day.(and my first to every level cap raise since then)
I also did G5 on blue and its really not too bad. From my limited experience doing the fight(I won on my second attempt) I thought I'd share a few things.
1st. Like a lot of the G5 fights what your opponent does or more importantly doesn't do can have a big impact on whether you win or not. For example: Rahbaun used Radiant Breath on me at the start of the first fight. It wiped my shadows and stoneskin leaving me open for a headbutt that conveniently stopped my skill chain dead in its tracks. Fight over.
2nd. My second attempt went something like this. I entered, buffed, ate sushi, used reraise, and a tp wing. Entered the area where he is, used Burst Affinity then cast Frost Breath on him at Max range. At this point he rushed me. Btw, draw your sword before using BA. Anyway, while he was running at me I used Azure Lore then immediately cast headbutt.(I had both on one macro). He ran right into my headbutt, then I used Chain Affinity> Vorpal Blade> Hysteric Barrage. I used another Headbutt(probably not needed) and finished him with a Frenetic Rip.
3rd. Win or loose, the fight is fast. I lost in about 30secs first try. Won in about 20-25secs on the second try.(not counting buff time)
4th. Bring Reraise. If you have the fight almost won but still get ko'd get back up and hit him with your hardest spell. You just may win.
5th. Don't waste time healing yourself. Its kill or be killed all out.
6th. I did the fight long before the change to Azure Lore so I can't really say how it could affect the fight today.
7th. The worst part for me was farming the testimony. At lv 70 the mamoolja can be rough so you may need some help. And there's only a few spawn points for them if I remember correctly.
Hopefully I'm not forgetting too much, been a few years since I did it and the old memory is a little fuzzy.

I have a follow up to the original posters question. I too want to take BLU to 99 as my first job. What are your recommendations for first job to level right out of the box. Also, any tips to unlocking the jobs without the Gil to fund sneak/invis potions. I remember a lot of walking in dangerous areas.

NIN is your primary subjob for almost everything. The only time I change subjobs is to go /dnc for dynamis procs, or /rdm for Charged Whisker.
Level whatever you want to 30, then Dancer and Ninja, and if you ever care to do Charged Whisker burns, Red mage.
Also, since we've already necrobumped this thread, I may as well go back and correct this.
Actinic Burst is actually used by the tier one VNM in Misareaux. I solo'd him without effort or issue back at level 90, and you don't even need an abyssite upgrade.

That's awesome. I'm going to go solo that ASAP.Any tips for temporal shift? Or is it sea and more sea for me? It isn't as tho I never want to get sea access, it is just a huge PITA. Now that there are voidwatch warps maybe it will seem less tedious, but running around getting cs.... Bleh. I know it is heresy, but it isn't that fun. In single player games it has areal flow but in ffxi it is disjointed, and easy to miss something and waste tons of time.
