CPU and GPU are both kind of underpowered for FFXIV.

I was in the Open Beta with my e6600 and it was maxing out my CPU almost constantly.

Is there any solution to my problem? I know my GeForce is not 9x series but what could be the actual cause that make the game so jerky and laggy? Please advise.

Your video card is likely 100% of the issue. The Geforce 8400 is a low end, older card. You might be able to make an 8900 GTX work, but an 8400 GT isn't going to be playable.

Sorry

yeah.. that card is only 3.0 shaders--surprised it will even let you load it.

You only have 3GB system ram too. It's probly thrashing the swap file as well.

Better vid card and more (hopefully faster) system RAM.

Anything you can do to increase fill rate makes a big difference in FFXIV: wider bus width and faster data rate. DDR3 for system if you can install it, or at least a higher PC spec rating, same goes for the vid card's memory--try for DDR5 over DDR3, and a 256bit memory bus over a 128bit. That's my biggest gripe with what ATI did with the 5700 series cards--they put DDR5 on a 128 bit bus. They could be sooo much better if they had stayed with 256bit...

People have been saying that the problem is with your CPU and your GPU, instead of buying a whole new rig, why don't you just upgrade the one you have now? ;)

I agree, upgrading is most cost effective.

What type of computer do you have? Is it a Dell/HP/etc, or is it something put together from parts by someone you know or a computer shop?

I assume, given that your CPU is a desktop model and not a mobile one, that this isn't a laptop.

There are a few considerations to keep in mind for your potential upgrade.

First, your video card is a low end model, and low end models aren't only used for cost reasons. They also tend to be physically smaller, use less power, and produce less heat.

Before you spend money on a new card, you want to make sure that it'll fit in your case (a midrange card shouldn't have a problem, but you never know).

A typical issue for big-box OEMs like HP or Dell is that they typically ship with a relatively modest power supply that doesn't have the headroom to support much more than what you could have configured the system with from the factory. For folks looking to upgrade a Dell or something, often they need to factor in a new power supply too, which can be a pain as not all of their systems use a standard size PSU.

Heat is likely only going to be a major factor if you have a very small case, or start trying to overclock things.

Past that, an AMD Radeon HD5770 is likely a good bet for a low/mid range option ($140-170 depending on the card and features), or an nVidia GTX460 1GB for a little over $200, assuming they fixed the driver issues with 'em. The resolution you're running doesn't need a -great- card, though if you upgrade you may want something better.

I mean, just based on the hardware list there I'd say you could get a better Socket 775 CPU, overclock the crap out of it, drop in a decent GPU, and you'd be pretty set for the time being. How feasible that'd be might depend more on your existing system though. It may be easier to simply jump to a new system, particularly if you also want to (legally) move up to Windows 7 n' such too.
