Maybe I'm just unlucky, but only a very small number of the opera (or any music-based theater) I've seen has been truly moving. Whereas, the majority of orchestral performances (including chamber and smaller) are fantastic.

I wonder if that's partially due to the far deeper complexity of producing an opera compared to a symphony... hmmm...?

Yeah, our schools have seriously failed to teach standard reasoning. It's really scary, to tell the truth. When taking my college level logic 101 course, people were having serious trouble with the BASIC logical formulas. These were primarily people who were majoring in certain sciences, philosophy, or comp sci, mind you. So not, generally speaking, the ridiculously unintelligent people. I know my ability to properly structure an argument or reason definitely went up after taking the course.

The courses generally cover first order logic and modal logic.

So you basically handle proofs using and, or, if then, if and only if, and negation... IIRC.

Hm. Greek Mythology next semester. Should I take it? A friend at the college I'm transferring to says it's awesome.

Sounds like it could be fun, but I'd want to take a look at the syllabus first. I'm a huge greek mythology buff, so I'd want to make sure I'd actually be learning about stuff I don't already know.

In my experience, classics courses are completely dependent on the quality of a professor. It's like the content itself has no value, but just acts as a coefficient to the innate ability they have.

If your teacher is blah (or worse, sucks) then it will the sack of Troy will become the least interesting thing you've ever read about.

If your teacher is good, then the most boring epics will turn into 300.

If the professor is getting good reviews from your friends, then totally consider it. Hell, I'd advise shooting him/her an email or two. Professors love hearing from students, because they spend most of their time talking to a room of 200 people, none of who are listening. If his responses are absurdly dull, there's a good chance you'll find his class to be as well.

This also applies to ancient history courses. Unbelievably fascinating with good professors, mind-numbingly boring with the bad.

Also, take a class on Plato's Symposium, if you can. It's a phenomenal work.

In other news, I was 8 minutes late to class. Apparently, we were watching a documentary today (which I didn't know) and it had already started. It was on Deepthroat.

I walked into my dark classroom, the door to which is next to the projector screen, and hardcore porn was playing.

That was probably the biggest shock I've had in a while.

Deep Throat was a movie released in the early 70s, and essentially began the Porn industry as we know it today. It started some of the most well-known court cases concerning pornographic material.

It's what Linda Lovelace is known for. She later claimed that she was essentially forced to do the movie against her will, by her abusive boyfriend (who, iirc, was the director).

But it has a ton of historical ramifications. For instance, the trial actually began the public conversation about whether or not it was acceptable for a woman to have a clitoral orgasm (which means, yes, it was considered a perversion for her to have anything but a vaginal orgasm. To the point where many women who couldn't were being treated with psychiatric drugs).

Also essentially began the fascination with fellatio (and deep throating in particular). This movie was the first time it was ever actually the featured act in a pornographic film, and pretty much marks the point where public discourse actually begins talking about it (before then, it was largely seen as a perversion).

Ok, that song was awesome. Right up until the gong. Don't know why, but I really liked it until then. If it was left with just the piano, I would have liked it a lot more.

I really like the song that plays at the end of Mass Effect. Except for the bullshit that happens at the very end of the song, it takes a huge nosedive there. I'm talking about the part where the Normandy starts running away from the energy blast or whatever, and the music suddenly goes all horror movie scare chord on us.

So here's the better version of the song, sans bullshit.

As much as I like the piano, I like the horns that come in the background more. They're subtle. I think they sound like trumpets with mutes? Maybe French Horns?

No! Smiley: tongue The platonic, non-sexual way!

Speaking of sex... I found out today that the manager at work who is 20, he's a virgin, and believes sex should only be for procreation. I told him that I thought God made sex fun for a reason, because he wants us to enjoy it. He said that he didn't think sex was fun. I tried really hard not to laugh, and asked him how he knew if it was fun or not if he's never had it. I didn't really get a response from that question lol.

He also said that if he has kids, he's not letting them date until they're 21. I told him good luck with that. Smiley: laugh

You need to be the first to come up with the idea though, else it's worthless.

Look at Piet-Hein Eek for example, the furniture he makes from recycled/scrap wood costs hundreds of euros, he started that trend and now you can buy that sh*t at Ikea and wherever else you can think of.
If you're the first person to come up with a bed side cabinet that is only a drawer and the rest is a sticker, you get to make money with it, if you're the second you're screwed.

Edit: Also, the old cloth chair has some sort of frame within and is held together with stuff that looks like tie wraps.

Also, it's design not art.

Design is planning and fashioning the form and structure of a work of art.

He must come from some serious self-loathing religious family. I pity his future wife.

I was afraid to ask, lol. He also said though, that he doesn't want to get married or have kids, because there's too many people in the world. I think you're right about the self-loathing religious family though, because I told him he doesn't have to have kids if he got married, that that was what birth control was for, and he spouted off some crap about how that was interferring with God's plan.

What's really weird, is that this guy is from Canada. I'm not sure how long he's lived in the US, but he has dual citizenship and he plans to go back after he finishes school to become a vet. I didn't think they made that sort of crazy religious people in Canada.

It's a shame too, because he's a cool guy. He's a lot of fun to work with.
