Yup, can't afford Strattera. It's still used, but since it's a fairly new drug it's still really expensive. The thing is, I do eat a lot of meat proteins, and I drink a glass of milk a day, plus eat a fair amount of cheese. The problem is, people with ADHD (and depression) don't produce enough serotonin, dopamine and norepinephrine. So if we don't produce enough, it makes some sort of logical sense to try to increase how much we make. You can't take supplements for those particular brain chemicals themselves, because they can't cross the blood brain barrier. So the next best thing is taking the amino-acids that make those chemicals, that CAN cross the BBB. That and making sure you're getting enough of the other vitamins and minerals that are needed in the process of the amino acids making those chemicals, which is something I've been researching as well.
For example, the best way to make sure that Tyrosine makes L-DOPA (and in turn, dopamine and then norepinephrine) is to get enough iron, Vitamin C, magnesium and zinc. I haven't found info on what helps 5-HTP make serotonin yet, but I won't be getting the supplements for at least a week, so I have time.
