Does this increase my damage for those spells? or does it have anything to do with collecting shards and crystals?
Fact: Increasing elemental affinity increases shard/crystal gains by harvesting (Disciple of the Land) classes.
Speculation: Increasing elemental affinity increases defense towards that element
Speculation: Increasing elemental affinity increases elemental attacks with that element (People are leaning towards false on this one)
Speculation: Increasing elemental affinity decreases the rate that your shards become unharnessed when crafting
Speculation: Increasing elemental affinity decreases the amount of time the shards become under control again after becoming unharnessed

the bolded ones about defense and attacks are facts. if you talk to an aetheryte crystal and go into the adventurers guide i think its called it says both of those things almost word for word. its under character development then elemental attributes i think once you are in the guide.

Deffinately fact. Tested it out over 2 hours today casting Blizzard on Puk Hatchlings. Casted without any points spent into elemental affinity. Did resisted damage 140-150, base damage 150-200, crits 200+. That was over an hour. Second hour raised ice affinity to 50+. Resisted damage 175-200, base damage became 210-260, crits 260-315. Nothing else changed except I gained 1 level in conjurer. No other gear changes, stat changes, etc.
