So, there's this game the guys from Penny-Arcade are experimenting with. I checked it out, and it looks like fun. The graphics are cheesy and the concept is simple, much to be expecting from a "sandbox" game.
Basically it is an open world environment where you can manipulate the objects and land therein. Seems to me like an experiment of an idea that could be utilized in future games, particularly MMOs. I wonder what a game like WoW or EQ or FFXI would be like if you could build your own fortress any way you want on any certain plots of land. I imagine they could set aside large areas connected to existing ones for such things. It would also be nice to see destructible terrain and buildings. You'd think by now shooting a wall with a tank's cannon or the like in Grand Theft Auto would do some sort of structural damage.
Edit:
After playing the game and reading this guide, I've learned there is much more to the game than this. I never imagined something so simple could be so fun. I'd stay up all night playing if I didn't have a job interview tomorrow.
