Is surprisingly good. The lack of review copies before the day before launch sketched me out a bit, but I'm really enjoying it so far. The day/night cycle really enhances things, human enemies are much smarter than their zombie counterparts, & guns attract crazy amounts of attention. I already enjoyed the melee mechanics in Dead Island (I have Riptide from a steam sale but never played it) & the parkour adds a constant amount of intensiveness (think Farcry 3/4's tower climbs, just ALL the time).

The open world sandbox really allows you to approach situations in creative ways, so that's neat too.

I'm only about 10 hours in, but I'm very much enjoying it.

I read the Kotaku review today and was a bit tempted. Zombies don't really excite me but I recently had a pretty good time playing through State of Decay at the suggestion of a friend.

I might try to pick it up on sale later. I am still working my way through a late pick up of Far Cry 4 and enjoying it muchly.

I really liked FarCry 4, until it gets repetitive around the time you unlock the North of Kyrat.

I really liked Dead Island until you level up enough to one shot most zombies & it got repetitive.

Too soon for me to say if Dying light will do that, but I imagine the Day/Night cycle may actually matter a whole lot more at higher levels requiring much stealthiness or running like hell.

Yes I think that is a very good point about sandboxes in general. Be it Arkam, Skyrim, Far Cry, Shadows of Mordor, and even this iteration of Dragon Age: I.

At first it's very exciting: Oh man so much content, so massive /nerdgasm.

Then later on: Hmmm, another <carbon copy> mission. Guess I'll just bang it out.

Still Later: I'm not collecting those fugging <collectable item>'s anymore.

Until Finally: I have all the powers. ***** these side quests I'm just going to push to the final mission now.

I still enjoy the ride even though it mostly follows that pattern.
