Ubisoft to stop distributing via SteamFollow

Ubisoft will no longer distribute its new titles through Steam. So no Steam versions of Far Cry 4, Assassins Creed: Unity and the like.

It's interesting because they seemed happy to play both sides of the fence, unlike Electronic Arts. But maybe Steam is starting to see some splintering a la Netflix from major studios who realize that they can keep a lock on distribution and get 100% instead of 30% (or whatever their terms are). I personally don't care much -- I'll play FC4 on Uplay just as readily as on Steam and don't really dislike any of the major platforms. I'm sure other people will insist that now they'll never play FC4 (or AC: Unity or Dragon Age Inquisition or...) but I think the weight behind the titles will allow them to do just fine.

Mildly annoying like when EA did it but not surprising. I've got all 3 platforms as well already though so I won't be making any proclamations of my boycotting vengeance either.

Why not just offer a % discount via their own sales platform? that's essentially what Greenmangaming does, and they aren't even a publisher.

GMG is not a publisher so they don't have to worry about paying Steam a cut of sales for each sale made on Steam.

GMG's situation (every authorized key seller actually) and the publishers' situation are completely different on Steam. Steam gets nothing from GMG purchases (other than possibly new users and what ever deal exists between the publisher and Steam, but nothing from GMG directly). But every sale on Steam means the Publisher is having to give up a portion of their revenue to Steam.

Heard last night that Ubisoft is saying that pulling all the news titles from Steam (universally) was an error and only Steam UK is losing the titles.

Uplay has been really annoying for me so far, I have to say. Not enough to boycott the platform or anything, but enough that it would be registered as a con if I was debating a Ubisoft game.

But since I don't really follow any of their major franchises, since AC went to hell, it doesn't affect me much anyway.

HOMM V was that point for me. A new ANNO might get me to use UPlay, but that's about it.

I'll still be interested in Far Cry 4. That's about it for me.

I've got all three platforms out of necessity. I'm not going to deprive myself of a solid gaming experience out of some weird sense of loyalty to one platform or another. That said, I don't like having to have three platforms. I'd much rather have all of games under one roof.

Uplay annoys me enough that I will probably get DA:I for xbox even though that's ludicrous.

I just had to fight and struggle to get Anno: 2070 to work, so much so that I didn't even end up playing it for more than 10 minutes after 30 minutes of uplay hell. Not interested in trying to remember my login info etc. I know it's not the end of the world or anything - It's just annoying.

At any rate, DA: I is not going to get any money from me for awhile because I want the new pokemon and smash brothers and I need dental surgery. My wallet is feeling rather light.

At the rate they're going, Ubisoft is going to have to start distributing only from an undisclosed secure bunker.
