Talk to me about PS3 HDsFollow

I was thinking about getting the PS+ deal for my son and read that you really want a larger HD than stock (certain his is 60gb) since you'll be downloading the free games they offer. I would prefer not to install a new internal drive, primarily out of laziness and not wanting to transfer files, etc. Anything I should know about an external HD? I did a little reading and it sounded as though 5400 vs 7200 wasn't a big deal -- maybe a 10% boost at best and closer to 5% on average. Was considering this drive mainly 'cause it's cheap on sale for $50.

That said, I dunno crap about PS3 drives. I mean, I know plenty enough about PC drives and I know they're the same animal but I've never messed with the Ps3 aside from plugging it in and telling the kid to go to town.

I don't own a PS3, but from what I've been told by others who do, any laptop HD should be compatible. Buddy of mine at work swapped out his smallish (120GB?) for a 400GB drive with very little problem he claims. I have no knowledge of whether or not an external drive will work.

I swapped my 60GB to a 500GB without a hitch, but I didn't do a file transfer. This post is of no help to you.

I'm not sure that you can use external drives to play games like the 360 can, but I've never tried so I could be wrong. To swap out the internal drive is simple, there is a little door on the left side of the PS3 that you can pop open; and you can use the backup option in the PS3 System Menu to back up your current drive to an external, then restore it to the new drive once it's installed.

As for a replacement drive I would recommend [link=http://www.amazon.com/dp/******************************************************************************************************** one[/link] for the internal drive, you'll get the same amount of space but have nearly the same access speed as an SSD.

Reading around it sounds like you can but if installing the new internal is as easy as popping a door I might just go internal.

External hard drive is going to go through a USB 2.0 bus, which will be a speed bottleneck regardless of which drive you choose. Internal will be much faster, cheaper, and as easy as loading a drive in a computer, though you will need to deal with the file transfer bit which is a pain. sata to USB cables are cheap though, so you could always get one of those, prestage everything to the new drive or from the old one after the fact for $10 or so more than the cost of the drive. Installation process is painless https://support.us.playstation.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/362

I had one of those for my work laptop for a long time. They work well, they are about 10% slower than a SSD i've found overall. the only problems we ever had with them were some of the early ones got a bad firmware load and we had two in the office lose their configuration and wipe themselves. those were the old 300GB series though, the newer ones have not had that issue.

Thanks all. Picked up a 750gb internal drive (2.5" - made sure I saw people saying they used it in their PS3) for Christmas. I'm not sure how much stuff he actually has on his current drive so maybe I'll just switch them out and let him look and decide how important transferring all the stuff is.

Although all his stuff would be saved games and I see PS+ comes with a gb of cloud storage. Could he offload his game saves to that and then put them back onto the new drive? His current drive doesn't have much on it (he hasn't bought any digital games, etc) and the new drive is mainly because I hear you chew up space in a hurry downloading the "free" PS+ games. Free in quotes because I know they only work while you have a PS+ sub but I'll let that be his problem a year from now. Or a 2014 Christmas gift!

How to backup/recover your saves to/from the cloud: https://support.us.playstation.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/2293

Also, when picking up the free games, be sure to "purchase" them all, even if you don't have the console it's for. You can cancel the download, but it'll still be available for you if you ever get the console it's for. I've been saving up Vita games on my PS3, in the event that I ever get one, however unlikely that may be.

Thanks for that. I'll be looking for this thread in another month or so to find that link.

I bought a 500GB HDD for my PS3 last year, and never got around to installing it. Mine is an old 80GB phat model, and it's been filled up or quite some time. Constantly having to uninstall and reinstall games, DLC, patches, etc.

But I need to get an external storage device big enough to backup my system on before I do my swap because I don't want to redownload everything...

Just get one of these and use your new 500GB drive. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812232033 There is a usb 2.0 variant for $12 that has IDE sockets as well, but seeing as you might use that cable for your computer too at some point the 3.0 one is probably the way to go since it is fully 2.0 backwards compatable. Plug drive into it, plug unit with drive attached into PS3 and power, and away you go. That particlar unit is also compatable with the new 4TB drives, if thats a consideration. the PS3 is also likely not compatable with the new 4TB drives due to the controller differences, so i don't even knwo why I mentioned that. but maybe you'll use that newfound knowledge on hard drive trivia night someday?

I already have a USB to SATA/IDE adapter, but I don't think I can use the replacement drive as my backup. Once put into the PS3 as the main drive it will do a format and install the OS on it.

I'll just have to grab one of my spare HDDs floating around and format it to FAT32, and then try my USB adapter on that. I think I have one sitting on my desk.

There is a free-ish program called Macrium Reflect that lets you clone one hard drive to another. Not sure if it will work with a Linux filesystem but you can always try. If not there should be an Open Source Linux version on the net somewhere

Just use your PC to clone the old disk to the new one, then use GParted to redistribute the remaining free space on the disk.

Did some checking on the current Super Slim models and it looks like the drive bay in on the right side of the console now.
