Furthermore, you can't access the game from just any PS3. You have to access it from a device associated with a Sony account that's connected to your FFXIV account.

You're sure about that? I thought your SE account was tied to your PSN account and not the actual device. Like if I buy it for PS3 and so does my brother, I can go to his place and just log in to my PSN account and play. I might be wrong but that's how I understand it.

Edit: yea what he said. I was too slow.

If the device is linked to your Sony Entertainment Network account, and that account is linked to your FFXIV account, then you're fine.

If the device is NOT linked to your SEN account, you will not be able to access the game.

FINAL FANTASY XIV: A Realm Reborn for the PlayStation 3
Multiple copies of FFXIV: A Realm Reborn for PlayStation 3 may be registered to a Sony Entertainment Network account. Please note that only one Sony Entertainment Network account can be linked to a Square Enix account, which allows up to eight service accounts.

So you can have multiple people using one PS3, but you can only use multiple PS3s if those are linked to the same SEN account. I have no clue what the limits on that account are.

Either way, my only point was that you can't just log in from any PS3 with the client.

I kind of see what Dig's getting at.

PS3 doesn't allow you to pirate the software, PC does (currently, FFXI and FFXIV Beta). Even the Beta, you had to have a special PSN Code to download the client, and you only got that if you were selected for PS3 Beta. So PC users are at a disadvantage cause they can't steal the PS3 version. So to fix this now, SE would just implement a DRM on the PC version to make it not possible to play from a PS3 initially registered account.

I still don't agree with the way he's interpreting it though. In my opinion, this simplest way would be to have the PS3 and PC versions registered two different services on your SE Account, which they could have done with PS2/Xbox/Windows on FFXI but didn't for some reason or another. And given the other FAQ answers linked earlier about simultaneous use and registering multiple codes, I think they would have stated you would have to register the codes on your SE Account. Because how else would it know if you actually purchased the PS3 game or just borrowed the disc from a friend?

Not individual PS3s, the PSN (or as they put it, SEN) accounts. Even what you quote refers to accounts, not devices.

I just looked it up - 2 PS3s are allowed to be linked to a single PSN/SEN account. So you can access the game from up to 2 PS3s, and no more, unless you deactivate one from the account.

The game requires you to link this account to your SE account in order to play the game.

That tells SE, specifically, that you are only able to access the game from that specific PSN account, which they WILL check when you attempt to log in.

So giving you access to the PC version on top of that is something they'd be deciding to do from the goodness of their own hearts. It's not like they have any particular reason to give it to you. Either way, it's technically going to be a separate service underneath the umbrella of their FFXIV service account.

[EDIT]

Quote:
Maximum Number of Systems
There is a maximum number of systems that can be activated with one account which differs depending on the content.

For purchased/downloaded content before November 17, 2011 the number of systems for activation is:
For Game Content - Five (5) PS3 and/or portable systems

For Video Content - One (1) PS3 and up to Three (3) portable systems

As of November 18, 2011, number of systems for activation is:
For Game Content - Two (2) PS3 and/or portable systems

For Video Content - One (1) PS3 and up to Three (3) portable systems

If you exceed this amount, you will need to deactivate a system before the new one can be used to download content. You must also have the system with you in order to activate or deactivate it.

The weird part is that they won't let you activate a PS3, PSP, and a Vita. You'd think they would have made it a maximum of 3 systems, with no more than 2 of either the PS3 or portable.

Isn't that just for playing games on the PS3 while you are not logged in though? Limited number of devices that get offline access to your PSN holdings, otherwise you have to log in. (People used to share their 5 downloads with friends and buy CoD map packs for about 3 dollars each instead of 15 dollars, log in once, download it, then the PS3 has it active instead of just the account).

I thought you could play anything on your PSN account as long as it was actively logged in on the PS3 in question (Pretty sure Xbox works that way).

Buy PS3 and download the PC client from SE? As far as I know the key should work for both, once its activated to your account it doesnt matter where you log in It works both places.

If you'd like I can loan you one of my minions, they'll be sure to get you up between 5am and 6am everyday. No more of this sleeping until afternoon nonsense. Smiley: disappointed

We don't have any way of knowing, I suppose.

They specify that you need to link your PSN account to your FFXIV account, so you likely need to log in from your own PSN account. But then you need to input your log in info anyway, so what purpose is the PSN login fulfilling?

It might be DRM to verify your client. Or it might be something else. We don't know.

It could be some requirement from the Sony side of things as well. FFXIV is the first MMO I've played on my PS3, so I don't know how the other MMOs (DCU, only one right now, right?) does it. But I remember being forced to link my Xbox 360 Gamertag to my FFXI POL Account, same as I did for my PSN account to my SE Account for FFXIV Beta.

Just a guess but maybe you'll be able to pay your subscription with your PSN wallet like what they did with DCUO when it was still subscription based. That would be a good reason to tie your SE account to your PSN.

Sounds plausible... SE's got a pretty ****** up payment system these days. They must have had some trouble/conflict with credit card company contracts or something. Moved to the whole crysta thing, for a while didn't have any auto renew plans, etc. I think even now their auto renew is still Crysta and you have to buy Crysta through their store, rather than just setting up an auto pay directly through a credit/debit/prepaid card...

There's Free Realms, and if I was slightly less lazy I'd see how registering for that differs between the two devices.

But I'm going to play The Last of Us instead. Smiley: laugh

With DCUO you would just set up payment through the PSN and it would take it out your wallet or credit card linked to your PSN every month.

Looks like catpeople are by far the most popular choice at the moment, from a little over 14k resonses.

I'm amazed at how large the Scholar pool is. I can only assume it's because people were clicking the first Arcanist option instead of reading.

Well, I know that was posted on the FFXIV subreddit, of which Gilgamesh is the community-voted "Reddit server," so I'm sure it's skewed a bit because of that.

If you're buying the PS3 version, Amazon has it for $40, but if you pre-order, you get a $10 Amazon credit. I'm not sure there are any better deals for the physical PS3 game.
