I wonder how much it would cost to slap together a HTPC with similar specs.

There wasn't all that much that interested me at the PS3 reveal, but that's because I don't care about the social media aspects. More power, I like. Cloud gaming, I like. I'm hearing rumors that it'll allow a lot more developer freedom for game publishing, which would be great for letting it compete with PC gaming.

But, to be honest, I'll be switching to a PC when I have enough saved that I don't mind the loss. I don't have anything against consoles, and if you aren't going to be buying a lot of titles than it's definitely cheaper, but even my laptop tends to vastly eclipse my PS3 when it comes to time spent gaming. And it doesn't get high FPS. Ever.

My PS3's primary use nowadays is that it's my Netflix box.

Will I get a PS4? I honestly don't know. If it has some awesome exclusives, maybe. But am I planning to get one? No.

If I can swing the money and my roommates don't already plan on buying one each, I will be buying it for this.

I have the first inFamous free from the PSN nightmare. I think I cleared through the first chapter or two, but that's it. Wasn't bad, but it wasn't amazing for me.

Though I've actually gotten far more into superhero/comics stuff since then. So maybe I'll enjoy it more now? It's still on my system, so I might as well check it out.

I've seen a couple people try and take a stab at it but there honestly isn't enough info about the processor or graphic card yet to be serious about the attempt.

Well the specs are :
AMD "Jaguar"
-8 cores ( no clock speed listed) about 160 buck for a AMD FX-8150 8 core BE
-Memory 8GB GDDR5
Hmm GDDR5 is just faster DDR3 (very basic explanation)
Video
AMD Next Gen Radeon graphics - Based on 1.84 Teraflops number that puts it around the Geforce 660 (Non-OC) or the Radeon 7850 in power approx. Sources say that the Geforce 690 is over 6 Teraflops, the Radeon 7870 around 2.5.

So sort of what I built recently seems to be about the measure. Around the 800/900 dollar mark (this includes case/PSU/Mobo/Etc). So a note is atm I can play almost every game Ive put in it on high (Have not played crisis) at 1080p @ 60mhz averaging around the 60 FPS mark, except Planetside 2 In medium (100) to larger(200+) battles I get around 35 fps, thats GPU cap, outside battle I average 70 + and GPU cap

I came in closer to $600-$700 though I think I could do better if I put any effort into it. I get the feeling the processor and GPU will be lower wattage components due to heat issues and a little less performance than some people are expecting. Mobile quality components rather than PC stuff.

Can someone explain to me why shared RAM between the CPU and GPU is superior than having a GPU with its own dedicated memory? Becasue I can't help but feel that it's just adding more RAM than is even necessary just to patch a hole.

So I'm assuming I'm grossly misunderstanding something?

I'm taking a shot in the dark and guessing here.

PS4, unlike PC, can do 2 things Play games or use XMB. That's it really. Shared RAM in this situation lets the XMB use more if a game isnt being played or the game if the XMB isnt being played. They could say well the graphics has 6GB dedicated and the System has 2 GB dedicated. But this creates small problems, you use more GPU power (or have an extra chip to coordinate the video ram and GPU core, which takes up space in whats supposed to be a small console) since its also controlling its own ram instead of the northbridge sorting it out for it, and if no game is running the max ram the system can use is 2 gigs letting 6 gigs go to waste if a video game isnt being played at that time.

Sharing the ram allows Sony to give more Ram to the system while the GPU is being unused and more to the GPU when the system isnt being used, or rather when its in background.

It makes sense kind of, again I'm no expert and not as informed or educated as i would like to be on the subject. Shared memory in a PC is different due to the multi tasking a PC is doing all the time and the variable that comes with the user being able to run w/e.

I know this doesnt do a great job of explaining it all but I didnt want to type out a ton of what I think is going on as fact when I know only the basics behind how the CPU/GPU/RAM/NorthBridge/Southbridge all work together, and even some of that info may be dated becuase I studied it a while ago and don't remember much.

I guess that makes sense. I was just confused by the way they seemed to be trumpeting the shared RAM as a feature of the system. I was watching the reveal and wondering when the last time someone got excited about RAM was, and why I should feel excited about what clearly felt like a cost-cutting option.

I didn't really see anything that blew me away (although Deep Down looks like it has potential, Capcom, not holding breath etc). The Vita functionality makes it a day one purchase as long as they deliver a certain amount for remote play. Sony said it won't block used games, but their phrasing made it sound like they have tech in there that will make that a developer option. One thing I forgot to mention is that I'm excited for the controller.

So far, everything I've seen and heard leave me feeling positive and hopeful.

We'll probably see the trend of "online pass" codes continue, where if you buy the game new, you get full access, but a used game purchase will likely require purchase of the code in order to access online gameplay. With most games having some sort of online component nowadays, it's a way to recoup some money lost to used game sales.

Maybe I'm alone here, but I really don't care if Sony or Microsoft block used games. I do believe targeting the used game industry is a terrible idea though.

More of an issue to me is how they accomplish it.

I just want to see their direct distribution systems become a bit more robust and have frequent sales like PC DD. I wouldn't mind giving my money directly to them if they made their prices competitive.

MMOs have been doing it for years. And I don't really care either because I don't buy/sell used games, but I can understand why a lot of people would be pissed.

What I'm a little more concerned about is the recent leak of a flowchart demonstrating how they (supposedly) plan on preventing piracy. Basically it showed the system measuring the load times, verifying the time it took to load the game and validating it, then flagging a user ID as valid or not. This would be easy to dance around as a pirate, but is so full of potential headaches for the consumer that I can't understand why they would even consider it.

It's just a patent filing. Companies the size of Sony file tens of thousands of them, and most never see the light of day. It's a healthy defensive technique employed by most corporations - they're rarely something that a consumer needs to be concerned about.

Pretty much this. Almost all of my PS3/N games are either my free games from PS+, from the Sales (50% off FF games/Namco games) or from the bargin bin digital section (19.99 for Bayonetta). If PSN was more like steam I would have like 300 games (like Steam) or if they allowed 3rd party to sell keys so it wasnt a complete monopoly.

Also they really need to fix their previous downloads list, ATM even with about 100 things on it (Alot of Demos + Full game unlocks) Its a pain to remember exactly whats mine, whats part of my free PS+ games, and overall its a messy way of storing the info.

My money's on Last Guardian release date announced (for both PS3 and PS4) at this year's E3. The date will be in time for the holidays, maybe a PS4 launch title.

I'll take that bet. I think the game is vaporware.

The only way that image could be more creepy was if they were all Grays.
