So I'm in the Beta for Torchlight II and I played for an hour or two last night; enough to complete all the quests for the first dungeon on Normal. I'm not a dungeon-delver kind of player; I've never touched Diablo. The closest I've come to with randomly generated dungeons is probably Persona 3 FES (and I liked the dating sim side of the game much more than the dungeon side). So I'm not sure how to react to the gameplay.

Has anyone played Torchlight, the original one? How does it compare to other dungeon-delving games? From what I've read of Diablo III so far, Torchlight II will be a viable alternative; you can play it offline, it focuses a lot more on RPG mechanics (like the ability to choose your own stat increases, equipment types, and ability upgrades) than straight action, and it will only cost $20. I've also heard the original game is considered one of the best in the genre since D2 (until D3 just came out, of course).

As is, I'm having a somewhat tough time with it. AFAIK there was no tutorial whatsoever... but it might be because I'm on Normal, not Casual. Perhaps there's an introduction there. But it meant I had to guess at what buttons did what action; it took me a while to figure out the differences between weapon types, to look at what I could equip, and even what my basic, non-magical attack is. In the start I was just spamming the right-click button... which drained all my mana within 10 casts. Now I've found that double-clicking the right button does a basic attack, but it feels very clunky... I have a feeling I must be doing something wrong.

I'll be putting in several more hours over the weekend and there will be a review up next week; I'm just curious if anyone else is playing the Beta, or played the original (and what their feelings on it were).

Torchlight 1 was a hoot. Nothing I took too seriously but definitely some laid back click spam blam dungeon fun. It had an old school feel to it and was not trying to be anything it's not. I think that's part of what people liked about it.

If Diablo3 keeps having server issues when this game launches they'll be set.

Been playing a little bit of Torchlight 2. What very little I've tried so far is great fun, but I'll need to get more time in it to deliver a solid opinion. At a fraction of the price of Diablo 3, it feels like a bargain.

Maybe when I'm not up to my neck in The Secret World I'll try it out some more :)

I liked it, but I felt it was a poor mans Diablo. At some point I'll get #2, but after it drops in price a bit. I didn't buy 1 when it was expensive.

I pre-ordered it, just to have (plus a free copy of Torchlight 1). I played the Demo of Torchlight 1 and found it a fun grind.

It'll fill the gaps in time when I wear myself out on other games.

When I paid less than $10 for 1...yea.

"poor man's diablo" in the sense that it was made by the two diablo developers with an open source engine?

No, poor mans Diablo in that it tries to be Diablo, but it's not.

I've played a bit more, and I've gotten used to some of the combat, but not all of it. Basic attacks still feel extremely awkward; double-left-clicking like a maniac tends to make my character spaz out and run slightly forward each time he attacked. I have hotkeyed my other abilities though, and it's nice to see some differences. I finally figured out that fame is like a separate experience bar awarded through difficult enemies in dungeons; each "level" gives a new skill point. I've won a few pieces of really spiffy gear; purple and (or is it yellow? I bite at picking out colors) quality. However I still have quite a long ways to go before I "get" the game.

I also like the pet system now that I've tried more of it. Have a full inventory in the middle of a dungeon? Give most of your stuff to your pet, and send it to sell all the items in town. It'll come back in a minute with a bunch of gold. You can also feed fish to your pet to have it gain short-term boosts.

Looks like Beta ends Thursday. Going to try and put even more time in tomorrow night.

Yep, I'm the new guy in the news team. Not sure why it displayed like that, but I think I have it sorted now.

I'm poking through Torchlight (free with II pre-order) in between D3 play times. It's a nice game, I haven't played Torchlight II beta, but I can't expect it being any worse than one. Definitely worth the 20 dollars for both games.

Free copy of Torchlight I to the first person that PM's me. Don't send your Steam name with the initial PM, since I am going to request it from the winner. Also don't expect a quick reply since I'm AFK for awhile.

Winner will be notified directly, and the name of the winner will be announced in thread.

No problem. Be sure to check out the URL below for Torchlight mods, they're Dev approved and required for three of the acheivements.

I strongly recommend this one, as it makes the minimap easier to see.

Some pretty good mods exist. I didn't get any game breaking ones, just one that added more merchants (a lot more) and one that enhanced textures and changed gem textures to make them easier to see the difference between levels. Oh, and one that moved Potions and Scrolls to the spells tab of the inventory (it annoyed me greatly to have 1/3 of my usable inventory filled with stuff I have to carry around).

Mostly Not Game Changing Mods:
Diablo Font Mod - Very mild UI mod, I like this font better.
Shaped Gem Complete - Much better gem level differentiation. Easier to tell which ones are which in your inventory.
Inventory Mod - Potions and Scrolls go to the Spell tab of your Inventory
Brighter Map - Linked earlier, brightens the mini map to make it easier to see on lighter background areas.
Torchlight Enhanced Textures - Adds some slight shading to background textures to make things appear more 3D. Not a very intrusive change, but makes things look better (IMO)

Slightly Game Changing Mods:
Merchant Pack - Adds many merchants and changes inventories on existing merchants to remove repeated supplies. While this does add Gem, Potions, Maps, etc, they are all scaled to your level and appropriately priced to avoid breaking the game.

Mods I've looked at but haven't used:

Slightly More Game Changing Mods:
Old Enchanter - Caps enchanting failure at 2% for town and 1% for shrines. Risk still exists, but doesn't increase 2% every time you enchant. Slightly less game breaking than the 0% wipe options.
Balanced Enchanting - No failures, 3 enchants max, 4 if you find a shrine. A nice balance to a 0% failure mod.
Another Balanced Enchanting - No Failures, max of 5 enchants Similar to the previous.

I was actually hoping to find an Enchanter mod that left the failure rates as is, but made a failure only remove a single (or couple) enchantment(s) and not the entire magical properties of the item.

I did end up being the story boss today. I can choose to retire this character or continue on to another dungeon, it appears. The final boss dropped an "Epic Double Damage Axe!" (Even had the exclamation point). It had almost 1000 DPS compared to my current best 525 DPS weapon.

Any other interesting developments with this game? The D3 hype has certainly died down and, really, it only served to make me more excited for TL2.
Necro Warning: This post occurred more than thirty days after the prior, and may be a necropost.
