I was hoping someone will give up the info for getting the higher powders especially Ornate.
Someone is selling 1000 in the bzr and yet I have killed 4 zones it is said to drop over and over getting 3-4
Can it be that it is being foraged somewhere? I can't pay the guys 5700 plat per.

Have you tried the orcs in Loping Plains?

It looks to be a random drop in level 70 through 80 zones.

I'd recommend (cause that's what I did), get the highest powders (rune, ornate, elaborate), and use a draft of the craftsman. You won't need as many mats.

Use the calculator on EQTraders to see what the success rate is, and always do combines where the success rate is only 5% (the minimum). Don't get any of the mastery AAs yet, and don't equip the trophy.

I went from 176 to 298 this way, using ~25 elaborate powders (and then making the scrolls, of course), ~15-20 ornate powders, and ~25 runic powders.

Have you thought of putting up a buyer for them.

have you looked at Magelo and have a tracker toon to farm the mobs that are listed.
https://eq.magelo.com/item/36286#dropped

Are you sure you don't have these items on your other toons. My self I save all trade-skill items I can.

I have looked and I keep everything also for trade skills.
I tried that list not all yet but found zero drops on the supposed 100 targets.
Thanks I will look at putting up a buyer.

Available from the in-game store, Draft (actually may be spelled Draught) of the Craftsman lasts 2 hours, and causes every failed tradeskill combine to return ALL mats, so you can keep combining over and over til you are successful.

The key here is, you can skill up on both successes and failures, though you have a better chance on successes. For both successes and failures, the higher your stats, the more likely to get a skillup. So, for higher level players with stats in the 1000+ range, you just want to be making as many combines as possible. The minimum success chance is 5%, so 1 in 20 (on average) will succeed, but you'll have a chance to skillup for every combine. By getting a guaranteed salvage for all mats, you want to fail a lot, and just keep combining.

So, you want to minimize successes, which means, no mastery AAs, and no trophy.

The DotC costs 1750 DBC, minus 10% if you're all-access. You can use the calculator on EQTraders to see when your combines start to go past 5% success rate. When you hit that point, then move to a higher combine.

Brilliant and well-explained.

Makes me want to say "but you shouldn't have to do that"...

-------

I have always been one of those that thought EQ's tradeskill system was completely out of whack in the value-for-effort-at-level for given eras, illogical in the amount of fails (especially on trivial to craft items), nor fun. "Friends don't let friends do tradeskills" and all that.

Yet when I play I stockpile tradeskill mats just in case I want to do that on a character (usually I waste a bunch of plat/mats and get no use out of the partly leveled skill). I want tradeskills to be useful and fun (and not a plat sink... don't need to be a cash cow either).

Ironically, one of the original design features to let you use GM points to level a skill (research is the one I specifically remember this getting cut back on) and the two? (Abysmal Sea and Crescent Reach) tradeskill freebies that get you started but not into useful territory are the kinds of things earlier access and/or more of would be nice (admitting they may have done something since TSS that I haven't gotten too).

I get that some people are fanatical about the way it has mostly been (EQtraders is a great site after all), but if there wasn't times we have basically been forced to tradeskill as part of big quests I think this would be a game aspect that the vast majority of characters would never dabble in. That's a shame. The research system revamp (while organized and logical --in theory) catered to the fanatical niche rather than making more of us enjoy tradeskills. I think that was a missed opportunity.
