I haven't played EQ since the first Kunark expansion and have decided to pick the game up again. I'm downloading everything now but would like to know what to expect from the free service. I realize that a lot of zones have changed since I've played last, and a lot of stuff has been added and taken out (the fun corpse run being one). What I would like to know is what something I should know before entering into Evercrack again. Just so you know I played a LV42 Half-Elf Bard (Malikal alZamir was his name), LV 35 Dwarf Warrior, and a LV 32 Euridite Enchanter all on Rodcet Nife. Could be off a few levels since it has been so long. So any advice, help or something that has moved and I should watch out for on my first trek across Antonica. Thanks in advance.

You may want to look here to find your toons. You may also want to peruse this wiki about Mercenaries. At the levels you have listed, you might have trouble with finding any groups. A heroic character upgrade might be a consideration. Purchasable through the EQ marketplace, upgrades the character you select to level 85, including a full set of equipment, two large capacity 100% weight reducing bags(can't remember slot capacity), and 15kpp. It also automatically assigns you the task No Heroism Without Fear, which will unlock the Tier V Journeyman mercenaries. That's about all I have to suggest. I am sure others on here will offer up plenty more. Hope this helps.

Welcome back! Due to server mergers your Rodcet Nife characters are probably on the Povar server.

You can get some information from the returning player thread

and the Forum info and useful threads sticky .

On Povar, there is a large friendly guild called "Unholy Czars" that always has people on. There's other good guilds on Povar too, I happen to have 2 barely played characters in UC is all. They're a good bunch and give me no grief over my play for a few days every year or so presence on that server. I would consider Povar a middle-population server among the non-progression servers.

A lot has been added to the game to make it easier for you to come back and enjoy things at your own pace. What the dev team is still working on is the complexity of understanding all the compounded changes over the years. If you don't want to guild up, at least join the server wide channels. Most people will be nice and helpful if you say "been away X years, what is ______?"

I come back every other year or so. The world is fantastic. By far, the best gaming environment out. It doesn't take long to realize why i left, but taking a romp through the old world is like looking at your favorite picture album. I am also pleasantly surprised to find my favorite characters there too year after year.

i was looking to spend a few hours today, after being gone for a couple years, and familiarity hit me like a ton pf bricks. Server locked for update. rofl. i cant tell you how many times I used to wait for them to come back up on a day off. hahahaha, it was like a blast from the past.

The higher end game to me is incredibly tedious. Killing anything is like sawing wood with a dull blade at best. The pre AA game is still a blast though. After that, not so much. There are alot of things they could do to make grouping easier and faster, but they apparently do not want to invest the money or time to make it happen. WoW showed us what was possible along those lines.

Getting a group is a no starter. Everyone is in such a hurry to get to the high end game, they are multi boxing their own group or power leveling with another account, which they made easier with the heroic characters. You can blow through the first 50 levels in a few hours if you want. so anything outside of Cresent Reach is a ghost town. the loot tables are bad and no XP bonus = no players.

In the pre aa game, you can still solo a yellow with a merc and it doesn't take 5 minutes to kill a mob. It is alot of fun going through some of the older dungeons and exploring. It offers the best gaming in my opinion unless you are into the multi hour guild events. It is a shame some of the best content every produced in a game goes ignored for the most part. So much time and effort went into those old dungeons. They are a work of art. The later ones lack imagination compered to them.

Glad it is still here to enjoy. Everything past level 50 though is a lesson on tedium. You really have to have no life to enjoy the high end game.

And after all these years, it is apparent there isn't going to be another game like it. Everything is moving to fast twitch pvp games on consoles. The attention span of your average teen these days would sink a game like this the day after it launched. i don't think you will ever find a game with so much art work in it ever again. It is like finding a good cabinet builder. if it cant be glued or stapled, there is no money in it. No craftsmanship. spend as little as possible, toss it out to the fast twitch teens and move on to the next.

i hope when they finally pull the plug, they give us a CD walk through of the zones just to appreciate the art work of what used to be.

I have to agree with you. I come back every so often. Anything higher level is just too tedious for me to enjoy. My highest toon is a 92 SK and it is an absolute chore to do anything to gain exp. Even with double xp, hotzone, lesson of devote the amount of xp earned feels so slow. Takes minutes to kill anything (even while boxing a 90 mage with merc). Heaven forbid you might pull 2 things or try to explore a new zone. Every time I try to go somewhere else usually end up dead because of somethign dumb like mob stuck in wall that pulls 10+ extra things, etc.

The most fun parts of the game IMO are 1 to about 60. AFter that as you say it gets pretty tedious.

I should preface this by saying:

"Hi. I'm Bijou, and I'm an altaholic".

There; I said it.

My highest level toon is an 87 Pally who got there though sheer determination and an unholy partnership with an filthy, horrible Shadowknight. Having said that, I hated playing him at that point. I could go do a lot of content at that point but couldn't molo any content in HoT, even the trash in the front yard. And even with my alliance with my SK friend, my roommate (flatmate for you English types) it was a pain to get past the front door.

OK, so much for that; here's my point.

I really, really like helping other people. It's part of my real life job and is strongly reflected in the game. I like helping noobs meet Boawb in Crescent Reach to get that belt and mask. I like teaching noobs the finer points of politely asking for buffs and help. I like the fact that peeps I barely know I can see months or years later (vastly outleveling the toon who supported them) send me a /tell saying I kept them playing when they were confused and frustrated with the early game.

I also like them giving my lowbie alts cool stuff as a way of saying thanks, but that's just a bonus.

I guess what I'm saying is, is that this one of a few select games that offers that kind of personal reward over time. It's what keeps me playing.

The game is what you make of it. For me it's an opportunity for fun and helping and teaching others (now that I think about it, a shadow of my desire to be a teacher years ago?) but, whatever.

Wanna be an bleeding edge super-toon? You can. Want to be an Tradeskill expert? (Get an RL doctor who specializes in Repetitive Motion Disorder if you go that route, because, holy shyte you will need one.Smiley: tongue You can.

Want to make the game worthwhile for you and others?

YOU CAN

Having said all that you might want to consider playing in FV. I'm back there after a time away on the TLP Phinny server and I almost forgot how nice (and HELPFUL) people are here.

The following list is for you (and anyone else) on FV who might need a helping hand.

Taterkuk (61 Cleric)
Kkark (27 Beastlord)
Ludvik (35 Bard)
Shamthak (25 Shaman)
Woag (27 Warrior)
Wybol(29 Enchanter)
