1 - nobody HAS to farm

2 - the question is entirely too generic to answer. What class are you, what level, are you boxing or just playing one char, etc.

3 - Anyone who really knows a good answer, likely won't share the knowledge

Having said all that, here's a generic answer.... anywhere you seriously outlevel the content, and there are LOTS of mobs available to pull (either from density, or due to a very short respawn timer - some zones have a 5-7 minute respawn timer, most are about 20 minutes). Unless you're farming for totally high end gear (something that sells for 1M+), you're going to make your money by volume, not quality. So, as you can see, the BEST places for you to farm, will be the places where that char is likely to get little (or no) XP.

A better plan might be to really examine what you >need< plat for. In the modern game, there are so many reasonable ways to keep your char up-to-date, that you should be able to keep yourself kitted out just fine with the plat you generate from regular playing.

Perhaps you can share what you think you need so much plat for, and we can help you find alternatives that won't require so much plat. And if we're talking about an amount that isn't that much to a long-time player, I wouldn't be surprised if someone on your server offered to help :)

Honestly, as Tat mentioned above, there's little need to "farm" these days. I've had no problems maintaining sufficient cash flow just grinding exp with most alts. Defiant sells pretty well at all levels up to about 80. Tier 2 spell drops tend to sell well all the way through (more or less). You can probably just hunt lt blue and blue mobs (for faster kill rate) at any level up to maybe 90 or so (your level, not the mobs), and just drop the defiant, spells, and occasional named drops onto a bazaar mule and do fine.

You can also look for valuable trade skill drops. The problem with that is there are a ton of different drops, and they are pretty darn random. So in a given expansion and a given level range, a set of various trade skill stuff will randomly drop (kinda like how defiant and spells will). Point being that you can get whatever stuff is needed, but it'll be a lot of different items and may fill up your mule pretty quickly. The alternative is that they're stackable, so what I do is tend to focus on a handful of them that are worth holding onto, gather them up into stacks, sell everything else to vendors, and put the stacks of my selected stuff for sale in the bazaar. You wont make huge bank doing this, but you'll generate enough cash to keep your characters decently equipped.

Gone are the days of hunting specific mobs for specific drops for sale (classic "farming"). Most sellable stuff today is just random within an expansion and level range. There are good points to this (you don't have to hunt specific mobs), and bad points to this (you can't concentrate on just one drop to farm).

Of course, you can also get into playing the market itself. Buying and selling to make a profit. Honestly though, and this is somewhat sad to say, but if you're really strapped for cash, you can always just buy a krono from the marketplace and then sell it. You'll probably make more on a $20 investment than you'd make in months of farming. Assuming you're employed, and time is money to you in real life, why spend that time farming in EQ? I prefer to just gather whatever funds I can while hunting normally (via the methods mentioned above), but that's the way I prefer to play. Others may have different play styles.

Oh. And if you have a gold account, don't forget about loyalty points (which reminds me, I probably need to check my loyalty points). You get these points constantly as you play (well, as long as you subscribe). Loyalty points can be spent at the loyalty vendor for various items, which may be useful depending on where your gear is. You can also just buy bags of plat. It's not a huge amount, but it's "free". Also, again assuming gold sub, don't forget to check into the marketplace at least once a month and get your free station/daybreak/whatever cash. It's not a huge amount, but does add up. Then look for specials and buy stuff occasionally. Good things to look for are merc slots and big bags, but there's a ton of other stuff.

Yeah, not all of this is about farming, but assuming the point of farming is to gain cash to buy gear/spells/etc, pointing out alternative means to get cash and gear directly seems relevant.

I agree with Gbaji on his post. Sad that there really is no economy in the game anymore. At one point I played the game just for the trading aspect, buying and reselling, was great in its peak in the luclin / PoP Era. But its changed over the years. Not really sure what you would need to farm plat for until level 100or higher. Most upgrades and armor can get from mass killings in lower level zones, most mobs drop pricey stones, gems, and other items that sell for 150-300 plat per drop. gear and armor is cheap 1k 2-k a piece will get you good items until you get to 105. Gbaji mentioned Collectiibles. Great idea. Those are always in demand. Personally I have spent 500lk or more on collectibles, Exp, and achievements result from collectibes. And not hard or long to get.
I still farm, because i like the challenge. And I use expensive Drink and water. So for me, its Stat food/drink /mercenary / Purity Augs, Gate potions, and helping out players that are coming back is something I do whenever I see a need.

There is a market for TDS and COTF Ultra rare drops. The items are found off any random mob in EWK, and any TDS zone, something like a 1/3200 chance to drop. But one piece fetches 3-5mill, or you can keep it and use it, same stats as CoTF raid gear. Not sure which server your on, but if it happens to be the rathe, I can help you out with some plat mabe 100k shoot me a tell in game to Linden.

I've never seen an ultra-rare drop. And I've killed my share of trash mobs from the relevant zones. The drops are MORE than "ultra" rare. Relying on those to pharm plat is like relying on winning the state lottery to fund your retirement.
