I know, it's not the weekend and we haven't done these in a while... I think it's a good thing to try and revive every once in a while.

My update: in real life we have moved into the new place and the internet appears to work. (some concerns about data usage due to ruralness). This also means that I am back in game!

EQ update: resubbed and logged into Lockjaw for the first time. Rolled a bunch of characters, got two of them to level 2 but already deleted the one cleric (decided I didn't like the name, possibly the race).

Early contenders for what I might actually play:

half elf female bard as I have never played a bard. Dinged level 2 without a death!
Barbarian female rogue as I've always liked low-level rogues and the class seems rare here (along with paladins).
Still leaning to cleric as a useful class to play in a progression environment... just not sure about my solo dabbling time. And having a hard time not being inny human or a dark elf for the snare neck... but kind of wanting to play a "good alignment" character for a change. I've done a lot of the evil alignment races/questlines over the years as most of my past mains were evil race/class combos it seems.

Telling myself to rule out the usual suspects of Necromancer or enchanter. Wizard is the int caster I haven't really played at all so maybe that tempts me. Not sure I want to play without feign death though... necro main for 7ish years does that to a person.

What's new in game for other people lately?

Nothing new at all here. I haven't really played in 2 months. My best EQ friend transferred servers as she is an avid raider and Tunare wasn't appealing to her anymore. I kind of lost interest after that. Time will tell as Winter is coming and it lasts long up here in Canada.

As I said in another thread, I finally got an old guildie to give the game another shot. We did a lot of running around getting her up to speed and I wound up doing the J5 Merc quest No Heroism Without Fear a whopping 23 times (and I still have four more to do). But now, all of my characters 85+ on Test have J5 mercs, which should help some. But in the process, I learned that tank mercs are largely useless for all except priests at 85+. Even against the severely downgraded quest mobs, the merc tank was losing way too much health. But I learned that the quest mobs are downgraded when running from Spelner to Elgron and accidentally aggroing that little camp of lizardmen (with a scrapper and something else). Those were regular mobs (like the lizardman patroller who paths through the mushroom copse and the tainted orbweavers who path through the dreamwalker camp) and they hit MUCH harder than the quest mobs. All in all though, it was fun and that quest is infinitely easier than the Warrens path.

I spent some time in Beza and Zeka swarming them to get some levels on some of my lowbies (75ish). I'm working on a way to get all of my under 85s to 85 so they can easily group with my 95/100s. I used to have a 65 group (CLR, WIZ, ENC) that I ran with mercs years ago. I copied them to Test and now I'm going to get them to a decent level. I think I've stockpiled and copied enough othni and athlai to gear them up. But I think most of my time not spent leveling lowbies will be spent farming gear for them. That probably means spending lots of time in the Grounds (for remnants). At least it gives me something to do!

Yeah. Tank mercs are more or less useless after a certain point if you don't have someone to heal them. Which is a serious departure from the earlier levels, where with any sort of GL regen buff, a tank merc can basically chew through content while you just hang out "helping". I can't remember the last time I pulled out my tank when playing my wizard.

Oh. I had a question about the barbarian rogue. I have the same combo (female barbarian rogue). Just seemed fun and interesting at the time. The odd thing is that when I created her, barbarians got a racial slam ability (which was frankly one of the reasons I picked barb). But when I returned to playing, I noticed that there was no slam hotkey anymore, and I can't find the ability. Did they remove it? Replace it with something else? Alien abduction maybe? Or am I just dumb and not looking in the right place? It's not a huge deal since various AA stuff more or less replaces that as an extra attack damage wise, but it was a nice thing to have (since it could stun just like a shield bash). And it was something "extra" you got for being a barb. Just curious what happened, since I've never seen anything written about it.

Barbarian Rogues don't get Slam. I don't think they ever have. I have several Barbarian rogues and I just checked and none of them have Slam. However, my other Barbarian classes all have it. Slam isn't a good reason to choose Barbarian for a rogue. The fact that they're the sexiest large race and dripping with swag, is a better reason. Smiley: tongue Plus, the lore surrounding their rogues guild is the best in the game and spawned a few expansions (one great, the others...ehhhhhh).

Just checked. She still has slam.

ctrl c to bring up the actions window, it's hiding in there. (I had to click an empty square and assign the ability to pull off a hotkey... wasn't preset).

Hmmm... Could have sworn I looked there. I didn't see it in the list of abilities to assign to a hotkey maybe? I'll check the next time I'm on and load up the character. I thought I was going crazy (hah, not too far a trip!) because I knew for a fact that I had it and used it all the time "back in the day", but it just disappeared. It used to just appear in the default abilities list, but now it doesn't show up as a skill at all (does it have a skill associated with it?). That or I'd just come back to playing, and still wasn't back into familiarity with the UI, and failed to find it, and just haven't looked since (it's not like I actively play the character, but still). I'll check.

Jinkies! It's not listed in the skills window at all (that was where I checked, what a silly goose I am!). Even low level Bards get Meditate in the skill window and it's capped at 1! And of course, my hotkey setups for my Shamans, Beastlord, Berserkers, and Warriors have slam already slotted (it might be a default though like 'sit' and 'find'). Logged each in, looked at their hotkeys, "Oh, there's Slam". Logged in the rogues, no slam so I looked in the skills window and nada.

edit: And gbaji, you play a paladin regularly but the rogue can't get no love? What are you, allergic to DPS? Smiley: tongue

More just a matter of limited time. Back in the day, I created and played a handful of different characters (wizard, chanter, rogue, shaman), but my paladin was always my main. I kinda settled on my wizard and paladin as the two I played the most, and just as a necessity of keeping/catching up with my guildies, I've more or less had to focus on them almost exclusively. Actually, lately, I've *only* been playing my paladin, but that's because nearly every time I log in, there's a guild group doing HAs, and they insist I join them (which I'm more than happy to). My rogue has actually been my bazaar mule for some time (which means she has all the cash for my characters, which I find hysterical). I do on rare occasions swap out her trade bags for her regular gear and go out for some fun. I think she's just like level 40something though. My chanter, on the other hand, hasn't been played in like 10 years and is like mid to high 20s. I more or less made him as a money maker back in the day when chanters were money makers (making and selling jewelry and doing the stein quest over and over). Don't even remember my shaman's level. Like 12 maybe? I created her back when Kunark came out, cause I thought playing an Iksar shammy would be fun. Got some of the leather armor gear done, and then basically focused on raiding/leveling my higher level characters.

So at least the rogue does get occasional play. Her gear is waaaaay out of date (but was awesome twink gear at the time, Ry'gor chain IIRC). Her weapons are actually pretty decent though. And of course, she's got the cash to buy pretty much anything she wants.

Well, since servers are down right during the small time frame I actually have to play :( .....

My weekend update: I actually did a Lesson all three days (Fri, Sat, Sun) for the first time since January. Other than that, have been busily leveling tradeskills on my two main alts, so that I can do the 1st shawl on them, and then start in on the second shawl for all three of them.

This is the first time I'm starting fresh on tradeskills in over 13 years. My main just maxed them a year ago, but had them all to at least 200 by 2005 or so. With this round, I am just amazed how cheap and easy it is to get them all to a reasonable level. With no farming, and minimal cost (3-4Kpp per char), I got the tradeskills to 252/248/202/188/182/158/158. What's left isn't anywhere near as easy or cheap, but still a lot better than the path my main had to take!!

Well... the character (mine) is two days old and has slam. I push the button and get the "bash yadayadda" combat text.

I did copy layout/hotkeys from another character. This causes some to show as "not usable". Maybe that is how I got slam to show up?

I do know that on my barb rogue I can find slam under ctrl c. I didn't look for it there before I copied the layout/hotkeys though.

EDIT: now that I can get in game I did a test as follows:

rolled a new barbarian rogue named "slamtest" on Lockjaw. same server as other barb rogue. Loaded her up. No slam on hotbar. Went into actions menu and see "melee attack" and "range attack" as my option buttons. So I click on one of the empty keys... this brings up a list: "slam" and "bind wound". I click slam and it assigns itself to slot #3. I hold and drag this button onto my hotbar.

I target myself and hit slam. It tells me "try attacking someone other than yourself. It is more productive".
