a tale of two heroic toons Ranger & PaladinFollow

I had enough station cash to make two heroic toons: Ranger and Paladin. I did the journeyman tier 5 quest on both toons. I tried a warrior and a cleric mercenary on the Ranger both times the Ranger ended up dead. The warrior mercenary would get its b.u.t.t. kicked and the Ranger healing is not good enough. I put the Cleric merc on reactive and tried to tank it myself as a ranger and got my b.u.t.t. kicked.

The Paladin turn I figured what the hey might as well see what happens. Success with Pally, I did not realize it was that significant of a difference between a chain class and a plate class. Both toons are heroic and have similar aa there are a few differences but for the most part they are the same. The only thing I did different on the Paladin is I buy a better shield because I did not like the shield that came with when you make heroic Paladin.

The thing is I have teamed up with level 85 Monks and they were able to tank the same mobs but yet they're only leather class but a ranger can't and it's a chain class go figure. I was told the reason the Monks can tank is because they have the AA which allows them to take less melee damage.

I will just have to use the Ranger to pull the mobs because it has a higher end pacify spell, snare, cover tracks aa, soe, tracking and great bow damage just that the Paladin will have to be the main tank.

By the way this was done in old bloodfields which is level 85 which 50% of the mobs summons.

Paladin TANK, and Ranger for Pulling, CC and ranged dps. That's the way it was meant to be!

The proper use of AA macro sequences determines not only the difference between a box wipe and a narrow win, but also reduces downtime for medding and/or waiting on skill based recycle timers to refresh. I recall spending hours perfecting AA/Skill macro sequences, so good luck with that, too!

Yeah. Ranger is a tricky one with regard to mercs. As you discovered, they're not so great as stand up tanks, so working with the cleric isn't going to work on tough content, and they're not so great as healers, so trying to use the tank merc isn't going to work so well either. The trade off is that if you find mobs that don't summon, you can bow kite and other ranger tricks to kill stuff solo (without a merc at all). So potentially greater exp gain rate with the ranger than the paladin (although the paladin will rock against undead, but believe me that's harder to find in good solid camps than it is to find non-summoning mobs).

The paladin will be much better at taking out named, that's for sure. I can kill just about anything (within reason) with a pally + healer merc combo. May take some time, but that combo is nearly unkillable against single target foes (and often against large number of foes, although sometime the healer gets iced since AE agro isn't quite the paladin forte).
