Good sign for Daybreak that Ragefire was so popular they're moving to open another server for the "overflow."

The big question is will they fix some of the serious problems of Ragefire. While I'm an inveterate legal boxer (check my sig) I'd be all for a no-boxing server because while boxing wasn't banned or even technically difficult in the classic days it was rare as hell. I rolled an enchanter to go along with my druid way back in 2001 because clarity and crowd control were so important. But there weren't may of us duo-boxers, let alone multi-boxers.

I might even try Lockjaw, in the naïve hope that it won't be so packed and maybe DB will address at least some of the issues that have given Ragefire a bad name already.

It was actually technically difficult back in the early days to box. Given the way the original UI worked, there was no native support for multiple screens. The game displayed directly to your screen, not in a window. I want to say it wasn't until the second UI update (so nearly PoP?) that they changed this (and created a bunch of "my pointer has disappeared!" bugs along the way). Prior to that, you had to use some third party tools that didn't necessarily work that well and weren't easy to use. Also, the software itself didn't do well running multiple instances of EQ on the same system (possible shared resource/registry issues).

Boxing back in the day almost always literally meant running multiple boxes (computers) to play multiple accounts. It was rare because most people weren't willing or able to spend the time/money to do so.

I always ran multiple boxes. But probably helped that my son played as well and of course he wanted his own computer.

You also had a lot more people using dial-up connections around 1999-2000 so it was less practical to run separate boxes or even multiple accounts on the same box (using WinEQ or something similar).
