I've been trying to access since yesterday and can't get through. Is the site down for some reason?

Over the last few weeks of visiting EQAtlas, it has looked like an abandoned site; there were broken links and broken ads. Overall it just looked like it had been left to run on its own with no maintenance or support.

I wonder if Muse finally stopped paying the hosting bill?

Eq Atlas has not been live since 2004 roughly. It has been kept up by sheer force of will but the domain may have expired.

That's unfortunate.

Was a GREAT site in its time and considering the owner was going to medical school while developing and maintaining it, IIRC, an amazing effort! I still browse through the thick notebook of his maps that I downloaded and printed out in color, just for nostalgia!

What's always been great about EQAtlas is the "homey" look of the site (homey, not homely) as compared to the much more clinical, austere design of map sites like the old EQmaps and mapfiend. EQAtlas maps were functional but also very attractive. Can't imagine too many people who'd design Internet content with colored pencils, in this day and age...

I was a huge fan of this site, I still have the binder of all the maps from then. Alas when SOE put out the book Atlas of Norrath he asked to help and they blew him off and he stopped updating the site and called it quits then.

That's too bad too, since the SOE maps were riddled with errors.

He stopped making the maps because SOE put the cartography system in game, which reduced the need for paper maps, or so Muse stated on his site.

I thought Allakhazam took it over some time ago though.

Anyway, you can always go to the internet archive to see the site www.archive.org

To few people paid Muse for what he did, or he'd still be doing it. I too had a binder full of printouts of the entire EQAtlas... in fact, I still do, and I still love to look at them. They have a little bit of the original EQ magic in each and every map.

Edit: oops, failed copy/paste

I've made our devs aware of EQAtlas's offline status. As far as I know, it's still supposed to be available.

Muse stopped updating it soon after EQ introduced its in-game map system, and it's been hosted on Allakhazam's servers for quite some time now. My guess is its disappearance is due to a recent server change on our end, but I don't know that for certain right now.

I didn't realize that Zam had bought EQAtlas as well - is there anything you guys don't own? Also, tt would be nice if you could fold the content into the wikibase or link off of the individual zone pages here.

We had a recent server change and to get EQ Atlas working we need action on Muse's part and - as I understand it - we've had no luck reaching Muse.

I guessed as much. I remember previous outages where Alla said he had to contact Muse and it was implied that Muse was pretty much doing it as a favor. Recent circumstances would make me less than optimistic that we'll see EQ Atlas back up (which is too bad).

I don't think they bought it. When Muse retired, Alla offered to host the content to keep it accessible for the community without Muse having to pay for a host. Muse agreed and that was that. But Alla's needed Muse's assistance in the past to get it running after outages.

Thanks for clearing that up. I can certainly understand if Muse is not exactly forthcoming in helping out. Makes me wonder if I should start printing out google-cached pages.

Yes, someone needs to archive that information because even though SoE released their own maps and there is an in game map, many people still relied on EQ Atlas. I never fail to find exactly the zone whose map is not included in the in game maps for some reason. I can't tell you the number of times I've gotten lost and tried to pull up a map only to find myself staring at a blank page. Is there some way to update the maps that are included with the game manually or is the patcher supposed to do that?

It might also be a good idea for you guys at Zam to find out from Muse exactly what he does to reset the site and get the appropriate permissions so you can do it yourself without having to bother him when it happens again.

To download a complete set of maps go to mapfiend.com all zones have been mapped.

WIth that said I went to Atlas at the beginning of the month to look at zone info. Then broke out my binder with atlas maps still in it. The site was great for finding mob locations in the first 4 expansions.

I have been gone from the game for a bit and forgot where stuff was, so I Broke open the old binders, didnt have a couple zones in them, went to EQ Atlas...nothing but the wind...didnt realize muse had called it quits...too bad...he was good. The ingame map does not have all zones...kinda sucks...Guess I gotta old school it. THX for the info.

Zallek: At mapfiend.net you can download all the maps with (in many cases) plenty of useful extra info (spawn points, zonein/outs etc.), even for those maps you don't get from SOE.

Mapfiend is good for in game maps, but can't hold a candle to the
clear readability of the EQatlas maps. Every time I sit down to
play, it's with my notebook of EQatlas maps printed out next
to me. Plus, Muse's maps (digitally) have been the cornerstone
of my epic guides. I always credit him and provide
the link. I hate the thought that it's gone for good :(

Here's to hoping Alla can keep trying to get in touch with
Muse to get this fixed.

HOWEVER, I have found the Zamiel has mirrored the original site:

My memory could be hazy, but I was an avid Muse fan back in the day. From what I remember, part of the reason he stopped making maps was he had developed a companion book idea for EQ, including maps, race info, etc. As he was working on it and talking to pulishers, Sony caught wind of it and beat him to the punch.

The in-gaem maps was the final nail in the coffin.
