[Navajowhite][/Navajowhite]Surnames ...love 'em or leave'em? How do you remove a surname completely? I can change one, do not know how to get rid of it. Anyone, please?

I'm more concerned with why they won't let me make my surname "Driftwood".

Driftwood, i asked to have the surname "Pelokgale" (which is Setswana for "courageous spirit") as a surname for my paladin and was rejected. When i petitioned the said it was against the naming policy. Yet i have seen characters with names like Bangbusdotcom (a **** site), Alahjihad, Frook Yaul..... Yet Pelokgale is somehow a banned word.

When it comes to surnames there is little rhyme or reason as to what will pass the filter or not. If you think your surname is fine, you need to petition to get it. You also need to petition to get Dark Elfish surnames with apostrophes.

I had to petition to get the surname 'Eazy'. I got it with no problem (other than having to petition for it).

If you see an objectional name you can also petition or /report. Ordinarily not one to rat out others, I will drop a dime on scatological or overt sexually themed ones.

Sometimes names will not pass filter because an NPC has that surname or it is used as a title like 'Coercer'.

A copy and paste from an article about EQ names:

[paste]

SNERT: Snot Nosed Egotistical Rotten Toon. Insult usually applied to players who play in a manner that is offensive to other player ( Not to be confused with a player who is role playing with in the character’s race, class, or diety) or a player who has a character name that does not comply with the Naming Policy.

Pickle: A.k.a Pickle Jar Label. A player with a name that is not with in the fantasy roleplaying genre. Example: Manapumper, (it is a name that says what a character does) Sournote Playsouttatune (a bard), Rezzyou (a cleric)

[end paste]

The nameing filter can't catch all the inappropriate or offensive names out there. According to the fine print in your EQ Manual, names are supposed to be with in the fantasy game genre. It seems that the dozen or so real GMs out there just can not be online all the time, scanning all the servers for SNERTS and Pickles.

Along with what others have posted, Names ( first names and surnames) should not contain a title like: the, mage, lord, sir, mister, miss, prince, lady, princess, sister, brother, godess, of , and god. Many of these are titles or rewards earned in the game and the players who have really won or earned these title are annoyed by someone just wanting a "power-trip" name. Also naming policy mentions that names that are off by just a couple of letters, or intentionaly spelled phonetically to imply an offensive term or title are also not acceptable.

The bottom line seems to be that if a name offends you, please /report it. The petiton system is so whacked these days its hard to use.
