asherons call world i walked along the coast from top to bottom no zones there 6 hrs to do.

i think it would be cool to time each zone crossing and see who big eq realy is

I'm not sure but i'm pretty sure they've reached the 200 zone mark by now and if not probably will with the next expansion. So yeah i completely agree with the really big theory

How does the size compares to Oblivion, or GTA: San Andreas?

Someone with way too much time once came up with a means of calculating the 'real' size of zones. I think he figured a human male to be 6'. Then he measured the corpse of a dead human male in /loc units (subtracting 1.5' or so or so for the curl) and worked out /loc units to the foot. From there, it's an easy task to measure a zone in units and convert it to square feet and from there to miles.

You could do this for every zone in the game and find out the square mileage of Norrath (or Norrath, Luclin, the Planes, etc).

I'm not going to so get back to me when you find the answer.

Stand at corpse's feet. Hit /loc.
Walk to corpse's head. Hit /loc.

Figure difference in /loc units. Divide by 4.5' (6 feet less a foot and a half for the 'curl' of the corpse)

Here's a map to scale:
http://eq.ogaming.com/data/2326~map.php

Pick a zone, find a distance, measure it, convert it using Jophiels formula, and boom, we know all. Also official lore says luclin is the same size in diameter as Norrath, so you get to kill two birds with one stone there.

I remember reading about this a couple expansions ago, if Norrath were real it would have been the size of about 1/3 the state of Connicuit. That was back with OoW expansion so by now with the new Serpent Spine, it may be closer to half the size.

How can you compare a game to the size of a state?

That's like saying "This pasta is so good, it tastes like driving a car!"

Becase the game takes place in a virtual world that is presumably scaled approximately the same as the real world? Really, I don't know how to explain it better. The 'game' has nothing to do with it; it's the presented real estate that we concerned with.

As a comparison:
the difference between EQ and GTA(SA) is about the same as the difference between GTA(SA) and pacman.

I would think most of the larger states have move room then all the EQ zones put to gether. Even if you look at the bigger zones they are way smaller then even a small to med city in RL. After all just how big is a zone when you can cross it in less then 10 min?

I saw a post somewhere about the board game version of EQ where it (supposedly) takes your intrepid explorers weeks or even months to cross the Karanas. Western Karana was mentioned as being 800 miles across, iirc.

I think you mean the pencil & paper RPG but, yeah. It mentions how the Karanas are supposed to be a months long trek (akin to crossing the Great Plains on foot) sprinkled with farming towns and communities, Freeport is a large cities of hundreds of thousands, etc. All the stuff that had to get massively scaled down to make the game playable.

Norrath and Luclin fit nicely inside my computer, even my laptop. So I would say they are quite small.

Though I've always imagined Western Karana to be shaped and sized like Nebraska (must be all the farms)

now were comparing relative speeds - in game compared to in real life. we would need to find out what speed a character runs at in game compared with real life. given the fact that the speed an in game character runs at is a set speed, and a person runs at differing speeds (depending on tiredness etc) it would be hard to accurately relate the distance on this basis.

I remember once reading that EQ had like 100,000 NPCs and over a quarter million trees. And that was a few years ago.
