I have a NVIDIA GeForce 2 MX/MX 400 Graphics card and EQ constantly crashes, giving me the error messsage, your client has crashed. I talked online with Sony and found out my graphics card wasnt "Compatible" with EQ. I am getting a new comp. for X-MAS, and am looking into getting an ATI card, b/c i heard they were better. But I dont want to make the same mistake and buy another card that isnt compatible. What card should I get? ($150 or less)I have been looking in Best Buy and was wondering if a ATI RADEON 9550 256MB DDR AGP Graphics Card would work

I'm a GForce guy myself. I don't know which card is better but in all the years I've been using gf, I've never had a single problem.

For around $150 you can get a gforce 6800. A friend of mine just got one last night and he told me that it completly eliminated all lag. He was in an MC raid last night in WoW and he said he was getting a steady 30fps. He also logged into eq2 and said that all of the lag is now gone.

The ATI 9550 should do fine because it is a DX 9 card. I use a ATI 9800 PRO like beacon. I never had a problem with it; which ever card you decide on getting make sure it is DX 9 compliant. I been hearing alot of good things about the 6800GT, but that card you going to spend $300 or more.

There are some specific techinical explanations.

To put it in simple terms, The Everquest graphics engine uses technology that your old card did not have built into it because it was made years ago.

you can get some compliate cards for $120 if money is the issue the 6600gt with 128k mem on board is one to look at if $$ are the issue. Saw a eVGA on newe@@.com and had several 6600 non gt for under $100
These will all run EQ and if you have 1gig of mem you will probobly see very little lag even with the cheapest

The ATI 9550 is a pretty good card. I found that card at Fry's for 129.99. (http://shop1.outpost.com}.

If you are just going to upgrade your current computer, that video card and max out the ram your computer can use will improve performance.

Since you are getting a new computer, you may want to consider upgrading to something with PCI Express 16 video slot. The video cards are more expensive but think of it as a computer to last for the next 5 years or so.

If you decide to go with nvidia type card, stay away from the Leadtek cards. Tried them, had nothing but trouble. Talked to a tech who said that they have poor quality control.

If you decide on the ati, stay with the cards that are produced and sold by ati.

Oh, and the question about 512 ram: 1)if you are talking about on the video card, only way to get that much ram is to link 2 duplicate video cards. To do that you would need to get motherboard that is SLI compliant for nvidia card or crossfire compliant for ati. (Note: I am using an ATI card on motherboard that is SLI compliant, works fine. If I wanted to add second ATI card would have to change out the motherboard) 2)If your talking about computer ram, yeh it will work but price of ram is getting cheaper by the day. I would say get max amount of ram that your current computer can use.

Just finished building new computer for myself. Gigabyte K8 Triton motherboard, AMD 64 processor, ATI Radeon 1800 video card, 200 GB Maxtor SATA drive, and 4 GB ram. Overkill for playing a game on, but I have had 4 accounts up and running at the same time with no lag at all.

About LeadTek; I've had two LEadtek cards myself. My old Ti4200 is retired, but only because I got a deal on the 6800.
I swear by Leadtek, and several friends have had great success with their 6600GT, but take a look at 6800GS, that ought to provide the best bang for the buck across the board atm.
