How much longer do you figure EQ will last? With them having to merge servers and people getting bored, I'm starting to wonder.

I started playing EQ like, 5 months after Luclin came out. I've quit several times, and came back. Last time I quit was around 3 or so months after GoD came out......Now I wanna come back again, this time for keeps.

But I'm worried about so many things, like how bad the Pally stun aggro nerf and the fear nerf are (I'm either going to play a Paladin or a Necro). And also how bad the grouping is, the item duping etc. I think I'm not going to get DoN because I hate the sound of this tutorial.

I really do not want to get WoW or EQ2, Guild Wars seems nice but.....I love EQ too much. So how much longer do you guys think this 6 year old game has before it will be unplayable or gone?

I'm not exactly sure, but I've read some rather vague talk, and two 6 page posts on the EQlive site concerning these things.

About how Pallies are no longer aggro kings, as you have to chain cast stun through entire fights to hold aggro, and so many mobs resist. And I read that all classes fear got nerfed (it gets resisted alot more, alot more mobs are totally immune, and it breaks early).

Of course this could all be paranoia induced whining. *shrug*

fear for years never worked on mobs over 55, that was changed recently, now it's not capped.

paladins are fine.

You may be referring to the lack of aggro generated if a mob is flagged immune to a given spell?

Yes, that must be what it was, that seems fair though. I guess I'm just worried this game will die off before I finish my time on it.

Now only one thing remains, Pally or Ranger.....hmm

I have heard of alot of people actually starting to come back. Just because they had to merge servers doesn't mean the game is dieing. Not long ago Everquest was about the only MMORPG in its class. Sure there was UO, but IMO it was completely different. However I have heard alot of people who went to WOW and EQ2 have come back to eq1 (I came back to eq1 after playing eq2 for awhile). Long as people are willing to pay $15 a month Im sure SOE will keep it up. Even if it gets to the point there is fewer and fewer servers they still probably will keep it going.

The fear "nerf" is kind of complicated. They removed the fear hardcap of 55, but the new spells for fearing 55+ are mostly useless - resist rates, duration, etc. So, essentially they didn't really give anything new, and didn't take away anything old. They just created a useless option. Like frogloks, or Berzerkers. Smiley: tongue

This was originally posted on the Necro/Pally class boards, but thhose things seem to be dead. I'm going to post it here to see if I get better results, without making ANOTHER post. The post is mine however. Thanks.

"Yeah, I know these sort of questions are older than God, but please humor me as I am going out of my mind.

I'm coming back to EQ in a month or so, and I have it finally narrowed down to Necromancer, or Paladin. I have played both of these classes before (Necro to 48-49 I cannot remember, and Pally to 51) so I have an Idea of what to expect from them.

I quit the Necro because I felt that the pet was weak, if the mob wasn't feared then the Skelly got handed his **** too fast. Now I know alot of this is opinion, but tell me your opinion, I know both classes have their ups and downs.

You see I love being MT in a group with the Pally, saving the CLeric/Chanter when they get aggro, and I know Paladins can solo reasonably well until higher levels where there is a lack of undead and Pally dps makes it too dangerous to try.

But I've always been a loner, I like to group occasionally, but I prefer to do my own thing. I started playing this game half a year after Luclin came out, so I haven't seen a whole hell of alot of things besides PoP and Ldon (I never played very seriously, tried alot of classes, quit and came back etc.)

SO I'm thinking, with a Necro I can visit many more zones solo than any other class, zones not many people go to, zones that no one cares about anymore. Especially in Kunark and Luclin.

My problem is, is the soloability of a Necro worth more than the semi soloability of a Pally + having a fun group role. I know this is one of those "its up to you man" types of questions, but help me make up my mind. :)

A friend who is on WoW and EQ said hes gonna give EQ up so he can concentrate on school (since WoW is so wussified) so hes gonna give me like 50k plat or something. I had a 59 wizzy (my highest level toon ever) and I know what its like to look for caster gear. Its more fun to get melee gear but, which type tends to be more expensive, caster or melee gear?

Anyways I'll shut up now, too many questions already, I hate people like me =p

Thanks for your time and help."

You were in a dead spot for your pet. The 49 pet isn't all that special and it's the last warrior pet you get for a long time. They eventually get better, but you'll still be depending on aggro kiting versus straight up pet tanking to take down most of your targets.

I've never played a pally. There are more then enough around here though, so they'll put in their input. I know they complain a lot about not being able to tank high level stuff as effectively as a warrior because of stun-immunity though. Smiley: sly

For gear, it's pretty much the same as it's always been. Casters depend more on their spells, melees on their gear. Casters do look for specific focii now though, which can cost you a pretty penny if you want the best stuff. You can also use tribute for those though if you're willing to keep your tribute vault filled up. Spells in the later levels will KILL you if you're not willing to do a lot of camping.

With the current state of mudflation, melees can get some pretty nice effects in the mid levels that they couldn't get before (ie +ATK). Since the stuff is so plentiful, it's pretty cheap too. The downside to being a hybrid is you have to pay for melee gear AND for spells (just not for as many as a pure caster).

I'm going to plug the bard, even though you never mentioned them. They can go just about anywhere and do just about anything (and if you can't do it, you have no problem running away). Always welcome in a group. Can always find something to solo. Not nearly as tedious soloing as it used to be with /melody (although I still don't use it in groups). You're the Mac-Daddy puller king. Ughhh, I'm sure I left something off. Oh yeah, you can worship Veeshan (*shrug*, it's something) and you can get persistent illusion (water elemental 4tW!!). I know rogues get that too, but I'm not talkin' about rogues.

Oh, and that 50k pp will last a lifetime with your bard. They're super easy to twink out.

Hmm, I never thought about a Bard. I know their hp/ac/damage output melee wise aren't the best, but I'd be able to do it enough to satisfy my hunger to swing iron?

Ok, I don't know a hell of alot about Bards, I know they can swarm kite, but how good are they at bringing down individual, but STRONG opponents? I've heard of Necros soloing dragons etc, can a Bard solo something that big?

The thing about being a Necro is that you won't be pet-tanking much, unless it's all undead so you can slow. Not like a BST or SHM who can slow anything and feed to pet. Their strength is in versatility. Root-rotting, aggro kiting, fear kiting and tap-tanking are the most common methods for a necro to kill a mob other than pet tanking. Necros also group well since they can do a bit of crowd control and a lot of damage, among other things.

As a 58 necro I've spent plenty of time holed up somewhere in the *** end of an empty dungeon, only to be called out to join a group.

I've HEARD of bards bringing down dragons. As far as I know, any class can bring down at least a Kunark era dragon if they're geared up and prepare enough (we're talking really high end stuff here). My bard soloed Phinny in Kedge Keep at 64ish. He soloed his piece in PoFear at 62ish. They have a hard time taking down real big targets solo sometimes because they don't have a true heal (or lifetap), but if it's mezzable, it's soloable (it just may take a half hour). Summoning mobs can be quite a problem, again, because of the lack of a real heal.

One place bards have an advantage (at least in the higher levels) is the ability to single pull things that no other class can really do effectively. As an example, there's a named mob in Dranik's Scar that is in a tower. It's almost guaranteed that when you pull him you're going to get 6-7 others. You can't get line of site for a bunch of lulls either. FDing doesn't help because he usually walks back ahead of the others. Well, with some tricky pretargeting, lulls, bellow, snare and fade, you can single him as a bard. Is the loot worth the trouble? Probably not, but you can do it. Smiley: wink
