Everquest vs DiabloFollow

#1 Mar 13 2005 at 7:00 AM Rating: Decent
Greetings

I am a former Diablo player and have been considering Everquest. If I should buy this game where would be a good place to start. By this I mean there are so many Everquest expansions I do not want to start at very beginning at the first game as I know is is probably like the first Diablo. Very poor graphics and such. When did the game makers really kick this game up a notch or two and make it comparable to the Diablo II expansion????

By the way are there other former Diablo players here that can advise me on the comparison between the two games? I played Diablo for well over two years and made it all the way to 90+ levels. How does Everquest compare in Graphics, characters, etc...?

These two games are essentially uncomparable. They are two different genres of games made on different engines with different premises. If you want shiny graphics, EQ isn't the place to find them. However, if you enjoy meeting new people, leveling, and doing quests EQ will keep you busy for a long time.

As for your purchase, go to sony's website and purchase Everquest Platinum. That will include the basic trilogy and everything but Omens of War and Dragons of Norrath for one price. If you decide you want either of those expansions you can purchase them online as well.

Right, these two games are uncomparable because of the two entirely different engines that run the game. I playd diablo and diablo 2 LoD, and have found EQ to be a much larger, and more enjoyable world.

Diablo 2 & it's expansion LoD is a great game, much better than the original Diablo.

However Everquest blows it out of the water. Everquest is full of zones to explore monsters to kill and a huge amount items and loot.

Everquest currently has 15 races to choose from:

Barbarian
Dark Elf
Dwarf
Erudite
Froglok (Frogs)
Gnome
Half Elf
Halfling
High Elf
Human
Iksar (Lizards)
Ogre
Troll
Vah Shir (Cats, IE: Tiger, Lions, etc)
Wood Elf

Each has their pros and cons.

Everquest currently has 16 different classes to choose from:

Bard
Beastlord
Berserker
Cleric
Druid
Enchanter
Magician
Monk
Necromancer
Paladin
Ranger
Rogue
Shadowknight
Shaman
Warrior
Wizard

Each has their own style of play.

The game currently consists of:

EverQuest Classic (Original Game)
The Ruins of Kunark expansion
The Scars of Velious expansion
The Shadows of Luclin expansion
The Planes of Power expansion
The Legacy of Ykesha expansion
Lost Dungeons of Norrath expansion
Gates of Discord expansion
Omens of War expansion
Dragons of Norrath expansion

Everquest has tons of places to explore and things to see and do. You can play for years and still not see or do everything that is available. Each expansion adds more zones, and content.

I would suggest reading about the different classes/races and pick one that sounds fun. Try a couple out and have fun deciding what you want to play or do. Pick a class you enjoy playing, if you don't like it try a different one. Everquest is a grouping game you'll meet new people and make new friends.

The Platinum edition -link- costs only $20 and contains all the expansions except the latest 2 (Omens of War, and Dragons of Norrath). It comes with 30 day free paid subscription. After your first 30 days you will have to pay a subscription fee (about $12/month). The platinum pack is the best deal for starters.

At first I was hestitant to play a game that required you to pay a monthly subscription, but after getting started it was well worth it. Everquest is a great game and continues to be so. It is always changing and being updated.

Welcome to the world of Everquest!

$12 dollars a month is cheap if you truly enjoy RPGs. There are so many out there, you would easily spend more than that buying them, playing them, and beating them. And like myself find yourself playing maybe two to three at once. I was playing Final Fantasy X-2, Neverwinter Nights, and Morrowind before I got involved in EQ. With Everquest, you will lose all interest in any other game you are playing. Because of the relationships you will have with your guild (once you find a suitable one), and the multitude of goals you will set for yourself. From getting to level 70, to questing for your Epic Weapon, or maybe getting your tailoring skill up to 300.

If someone stole all of my other games, and left me with only EQ on my hard drive, I don't think I would even care.

Except maybe for some of the sports games I still enjoy on my PS2, when I only have 30 minutes of gaming time, or I have friends over. Such as Madden, FIFA, MVP Baseball, or Tiger Woods

After playing D2 .. a variety of characters, including a frost zealot and a traps assassin that both beat hell, and cows galore.

Well .. after that there's nothing else to do but magic find for yourself or other people.

The primary difference between the two games is that putting a point or two in the wrong place on Diablo can break your character. With EQ, your toon develops with you and grows.

EQ is a far more elaborate game to understand, but give yourself a chance to work with it, and you'll remember Diablo fondly, like the rest of us remember asteroids. It's pretty much the comparison.

I was a former AVID D2 fan and have moved to EQ after many passes between them both, I have found EQ to be a much more enjoyable place, and to your question about graphics, it is not the same as you are thinking about in D2 terms, the expansions only unlock later content in the game, namely, new zones to explore, new creatures to battle, new race/class combinations, and items/quests to get.

I agree they are two games that can't really be compared. I recommend that you just buy EQ and try it out. If after 30 days are you not interested, well you spent $20 bucks on a game and got a month worth of entertainment. What you need to understand is that this game take a while to learn. I have played for a very long time and there are times I feel like a newbie. Just don't hesitate to ask.

If you play on Fennin Ro (Torvo) then send me a tell when you get on (hit t type Stabn and say hello I need some help) and I will assist you as much as possible, if I am on... If you can't stick with something because it is hard/complex then this isn't the game for you :-)
