Magic DMG?Follow

Can anyone give a concise explanation of Magic DMG? Does it just effectively increase the damage rating of a weapon, or are there limitations? Reason I ask is I just won a Bloodstained Staff in an adventure tonight, and trying to get a comparison of it with my current weapon.

If I'm not mistaken, it's just an extra form of damage. Like how the Barbarian Berzerkers get a Gnoll Bane Dmg of 3 on their newb quested weapon. It also helps with creatures that can only be dmg'd by magic weapons...such as the will o' wisps

The way i understand extra Damage such as on that weapon works like this:

when you hit the mob it does a resistance cheak against the type of extra damage <Cold , Fire , magic etc> if the mob passes then the weapon hits as a 10 Dmg weapon, if it fails then it hits as a 13 Dmg weapon. There would i imagine be partial resists aswell.

Note: i Believe Bane damage works differently but i have never parsed it so i couldn't tell you for sure.

I hear bane damage works differently as well. The magic damage is resistable. I was using a Disembowler for a while, 12/20 +3 Magic damage(effectively a 15/20 weapon when it's not resist). At the lower to mid levels it's a good weapon, at the higher levels the extra damage will be resist a lot more often, especially in raids or Planes where the critters you are hunting are ahead of the curve in all areas. If you're 50+ I'd sooner treat the weapon as 12/20 in the case of the Disembower and ignore the magic damage. I'd then look for weapons with better ratios than that to replace it with. That's just my advice though.
