I am trying to start a guild on the Modern Rasp server. I am trying to find out if anyone knows a good place to post so i can advertise and get the min 10 people to make it active. I figure after it is active it should kind of recruit on its own. Anyone have any tips?

Posting on message boards is not the best way. Just go to POK and /ooc it. I think you'll have better luck that way. If you post it on a message board then people have to figure out when everyone is going to be on and who to contact etc... If you shout it out in POK and get 10 peeps they are all on and all in zone so there's no issue. Just my point of view.

I absolutely disagree with this. The best way is to have a group of 10 friends and people you hunt with regularly, and co-ordinate them to form a guild. Just getting 10 random people together from a shout in PoK is not the best way to start a guild and ensure that all of the "founding" members are good people and have the same goals and objectives.

Then post on the server message board (which may not exist yet for Morden Rasp, if not, start one Smiley: wink) after you have thought through the guild charter.

You will also want to set up a website for your guild beforehand - an EZboard site is fine.

Well, if all you want to do is start a guild and really don't care about it too much, then just OOC in PoK as Vovin said. It's certainly the quickest way to start a guild.

If you want a GOOD guild, Patrician's way is better. Getting 10 friends together at the same time can be difficult on a new server but that's the way to go. Honestly, there isn't much purpose to creating a guild if you aren't going to take care of it, and part of taking care of it is to build on a good foundation. People are the foundation of a guild so you want people whose goals and play-styles are similar to yours.

Next and as importantly you have to decide what kind of "Chain-of-Command" you're going to have. It seems obvious, you have a leader, some officers and some members, but it's a little deeper than that.

Dictatorship: Personally, this can be one of the best ways to go. The Leader is in charge PERIOD! The officers have the place the leader says which can be as advisors, recruiters and/or just titles for the founders. The advantage of this is the leader sets the vision for the guild and people get the choice of following it or leaving. This is an easy to manage guild, non-political, simple. You have the first and final say. The downside is you have to solve all the petty issues and it can sometimes seem like you're dealing with children.

Council: The leader is the head of the coucil usually, but the officers have a lot of say. Issues are vote on by officers and can even "over-rule" the leader. Pick your officers well. The officers have the latitude to make decisions over members, often settling disputes. Guilds of this kind can sometimes develope "factions". People may prefer one officer over others and there can be splits in the guild as one officer gets pissed, leaves and others follow him/her. Their can be a good amount of politics that get out of your hands in a guild like this. Personally I think it's a good idea to make a combination between this and the Dictatorship guild. Let the officers have the chance to vote on things, but don't give away too much power. When too many people have power, the focus of the guild can be lost of changed.

Democracy: Everyone gets a say. I was in a guild like this years ago when "The Honorable Few" were founded. I wasn't a founder, but joined soon after it was founded. The guildleader had a more say than the officers and the officers had more say than the members, but EVERYONE had a say and members got to vote on everything. The problem with this guild type is the leader doesn't really get to make all the decisions even when they want to. THF was almost destroyed by this on more than one occassion, especially when the leader kicked someone out without going through the proper protocols the guild had. Most likely the leader would have gotten his way but because he took matters into his own hands, a LOT of members quit over this and the leader left shortly after. The guild has since had a few leaders and I really haven't followed it as I was one of the ones who had left. This is probably the most polotical of the three main types, but can also be rewarding to the members as they all feel important. It can also be one of the easiest to run in that more often than not it runs itself. A bad point is that it runs itself and can run itself into the ground also.

There are a lot of different ways any of the three can be run and there really is a LOT more to creating a good guild, but they all take thought. To make the best guild, let it grow slowly as you and your members meet people. OOCing in PoK that "guild-X" is now recruiting is probably the WORST way to find GOOD members.
