Is this a real problem in EQ?Follow

#1 Feb 24 2004 at 4:42 AM Rating: Good
Hi all,

Wanted to post here and ask this question: Is making money such a problem?

I find that im not making what you would call good cash from anything, I can't even buy items that are needed for my newbie armor let alone spells for my level, i stuggle with this problem daily, and tbh im finding it hard to log in knowning what a strugle it will be.

Is there something im missing, is the only way to earn cash killing mobs and selling their skins to vendors? im sick of seeing bears and wolves, i wanna cry :(

But seriously, how is it people have so much cash, i have barely 10 gold to my name and yet people having 1,000s of pp?

Please help a new player to this game have a enjoyment factor and not get put off by lack of money, tell me a half descent way to earn some cash and ill slog at it.

Thx in advance.

well, I was fighting the undead mobs in Greater faydark just east of POD lift, near those 4 stones. made 2 plat or so an hour, especially when a cracked staff dropped (from the skeletons, sell about 1 PP).

apart from that, go along with it, somebody will eventually tell you other ways of making cash. but nobody should tell you here... this is, what an RPG (role playing game) is about...starting off weak, making friends and learning from them new ways of generating cash.

PS: for your newbie armour quest you shouldn't really have to buy stuff... you should hunt for it.

Couple of things...

At low levels, it's difficult to make vast sums of platinum. It becomes easier as you go up, as the mobs drop more money.

Also, you'll get better money if you go up to the bazaar and sell your hides there. Higher level players will pay good money for hides of all qualities which they use for tailoring. It can be irritating to go and collect them yourself.

Nobody gets rich selling to vendors (the NPCs) - stack up your skins and your spiderling silks and go and flog them in the bazaar.

You don't say what level you are.

Finding ways to make plat (but don't become obsessed) is kind of fun. The game is OPEN: can you think of ways to supply a service to others?
* I once offered to lend people charisma enhancing devices.. a bit dumb, but made a few pp.
* does your class have a useful spell you can use for others? Offer to cast SoW, or a damage shield... some will dontate.
* run errands for folk
* collect items players need who are doing trade skills. If you are a foraging class, find out where people need rarer foraged items.
* there are odd little bits of "good loot" (for your low level) in different zones. I seem to recall Krag chicks drop feet worth 1pp and skunks in Butcherblock drop feet worth 4pp.
* its not wrong to "buy and sell" from the Bazaar... just dont be greedy. Buy items someone is throwing away for a few pp that you know most are happy to buy for 10pp. DO NOT race up to get free items given away "can and will use" then go and sell.. that is VERY bad form.
* find out what items folks want for little quests (such as newby armour quests). For instance, you can get quick levels for a new lil character using crushbone belts (from crushbone orcs). Loot and keep to sell.
USE the knowledge that others DO have vast wealth NOT to beg or hint, but to offer services (like quest and trade items) to save rich impatient players time and effort.
* RESEARCH. It is a vast world, few know all about it. Read on-line forums (like this one) and study the zones, quests, loot and mob inforation. You'll see all sorts of information that may give you ideas.

in earlier levels, i found the best way to make cash was to camp goblins in butcher block. dunno about other servers but in kayne bayle, goblin heads and vials of goblin blood sell for 4pp each.

Yep this is what you are doing wrong. Lots of items are used in tradeskills and higher level players will pay good money for them. Save up all those skins, also kill spiders for spider silks.

Learn how to make leather padding:

https://everquest.allakhazam.com/db/recipe.html?recipe=51

Very easy to make, and sells to high level players for about 20-30pp each (check the bazaar for the server going rate). Once you build up some money from selling leather padding, search the bazaar for cheap skins and silk and invest your money to make more leather padding. Keep doing that every day. You will soon have well over 1000pp.

There are lots of ways to make cash, but selling skins to vendors is NOT one of them.

If you're going to kill lions and bears (or anything else that drops pelts/hide/skins), don't sell them to NPC vendors. NPC vendors are rip-off artists. They pay crap. You can use some of the hides to raise your tailoring skill.

You can sell all the LQ/MQ/HQ hides in the bazaar for a nice price. Do a search to see what the going rates are.

You can camp spiders, spiderlings, to get silks or in Shadeweaver's Thicket, xakra worms and lesser shades to get shadeling silk. These can be combined to make silk swaths that sell well (again to other players in the Bazaar), or can be sold straight. If in Shadeweavers keep all the Swirling Shadows you get from the lesser shades, as they can be sold for anythign from 25-100pp EACH (varies from server to server) to other players.

YOu can go to the Warrens, where low level mobs drop brass weapons that sell for 3 or 4pp each (to NPC vendors - players won't buy them).

Anything that has the "This item can be used in tradeskills" can probably be sold in the Bazaar to other players.

Hell, Bone Chips can still be sold in the Bazaar for a decent price.

That should get you started. It is not all that easy to make money if you're just starting out in the game, but with a little bit of knowledge it gets a lot easier.

Level > all when it comes to "making money". Also you have to hunt in the right places.

A nice cash spot for the solo player at 30-34 is Golra Iceberg in Timorious Deep (sp?). I hunted there with my Beastlord from 30 to 34 and walked away with over 550pp. Now that isn't much to a high level person, but to a level 30 person, who doesn't have an Alt to twink 550pp will buy your next 2-3 sets of spells, maybe let you upgrade 2-3 pieces of gear.

I'm currently exp grinding my Beastlord, solo. During one KEI, he's averaging 1000pp at 56. That's from basic Merchant trash and gem drops, plus coin looted. Best I have done is 1450pp on one KEI, had quiet a few gems that trip.

Money and gear will come over time and as you level higher... that's the best advice i can give. There's no magic fix to the problem.

First take heart and give yourself a very warm pat on the back! EQ can be a very difficult game for those that decide to follow the rules and don't purchase their platinum outside of the game. Bully for you, deciding to take the long and hard road and actually EARNING you platinum!

Although it can get extremely depressing watching highly twinked out characters wearing lvl 55+ gear, you must not let this get to you. It's really hard sometimes to put envy onto the back-burner. The first step towards earning a healthy income is to approach the situation with a clear and fresh mind, free of envy and concern what other people are doing. If it helps…you are earning a lot of respect from people on this board.

There may be several reasons why you see people wandering around with thousands of platinum. First, the character may be an alternate where the person has another main character of fairly high level. As you progress more and more valuable items become No Drop, hence many items and cash as given to alternates instead of NPCs or sold in the Bazaar. Second, the person may belong to a very successful guild and received some items through raids or successful adventures. Third, the person may have purchased platinum outside of the game and cheated. [Note: there always exists the possibility as well that the person earned it through hard work…just like you are attempting to do.]

To help you start out you may want to invest some of your time into learning a couple of tradeskills. You don’t need to advance very far within the tradeskill to begin earning cash. Some skills you may want to investigate:
  • Tailoring - Save those LQ/MQ/HQ pelts. These are quite valuable (as stated by others). Take the ruined pelts and make tattered armor. The goal is to eventually get your skill high enough to successfully make leather padding. This sells very well in the Bazaar and is in high demand (normally around 50pp each). It sells so well because it is a real pain to farm the components in mass quantities.
  • Blacksmithing - This can get quite expensive, but take some of the rusty weapons and convert them to tarnished weapons. Eventually you will want to melt down the tarnished weapons into raw ore, which you can use to make studs and boning for your tailoring skills.
  • Fletching - This is always an easy tradeskill to advance in, largely because you are buying stacks of components for 20 tries. Piece of advice...forget crafting bows except for your own personal use. Entry and mid-level bows have practically no market. Arrows on the otherhand are always in demand when they are at a good price. LDON changed the arrow market in the Bazaar considerably, for many people have taken up archery for pulling mobs in LDON. You won't get uber rich selling arrows, but a tidy little profit can be made if you are very competitive on price.

  • Some areas that you may want to hunt to earn cash:
  • Level 8-14 - Kill green goblins in Butcherblock Mountains. The heads and blood vials sell for 4pp each. This area is normally heavily camped, so expect kill stealing and other forms of rude behavior....just expect it.
  • Level 20-24 - Although not as profitable as BB, the ogres in Timorous Deep sometimes drop fine steel weapons and rawhide armor. They are good (albeit slow) XP after Oasis and a good place to level before Highpass Keep
  • Level 24-39 - Highpass Keep is a very common place for XP and cash. The goblins in the basement drop all sorts of bronze armor, ore, and fine steel weapons. Remember to share your loot with the group. Great XP and cash!
  • Level 39-45 - If you want to solo the Ulthorks and Orcs in Eastern Wasters drop around 2-4pp and velium weapons. The Ulthorks sometimes drop tusks that are needed both for quests or given to Othmir for faction or a blue diamond. Save the tusk, for the sell very well (and extremely quick) in the Bazaar. If you like to group consider the Crystal Caverns. Lots of good loot and XP to be had there, along with precious jewels.

    Hi

I am friends with Yodian in real life so know a bit about where he is coming form.

He has 2 chars around level 10-12 and his financial situation is roughly 5 gold. His chars (a warrior and a magician) are not realy suitable to get all the componnets needed for the newbie armour and when you start doing the newbie missions at level 10 (newbie - didn't realise to start earlier when alakazam recommends to be level 10 for certain parts of the quest) you really dont want to be hunting green mobs just to find woven spider silk off spiders.)

The other problem is that he is on the sane server as me and due to transfers the vendors have 1000s of cool items for sale at 10000pp and nobody has any money. Everything seems to cost a fortune and nobody has any plat whatsoever. Perhaps it is time to lower prices in the bazaar until some more money finds itself in the game.

I wanted to add a question to this - I have thought about selling in a bazaar - is it easy to set up as I can't find a way of setting it up?

    Cheers for any enlightenment,
    Woody

If you want to make a bunch of money go farm the trade skill stuff that higher level players don't want to bother with.

Spiderlings are in most newbie zones. Kill them and loot the spiderling silks. On Saryrn these sell for a few plat each. Bone chips are plentiful and sell to higher level players for 5gp-2pp each (ie, 10pp per stack or more).

Your newbie quests can be done or you can spend the same time farming silks and bone chips described above then sell those to equip yourself with better gear in the bazaar.

Money will come with time and experience. Right now there's too much money in the game which is what's driving prices through the roof. We don't need more money, really.

To set up a trader in the bazaar you need to go purchase a traders satchel, put your items you want to sell in it then go get under one of the trader stalls. Once there, type "/trader" (without the quotes) then set the prices for your stuff. Eventually somebody will come along and buy your things as long as they're not overprices. Stuff like silks and bone chips usually move pretty quickly. Once you get more levels under your bealt you can move on to other things that will produce more money. Spider silks and animal pelts sell very well in the bazaar. These four things equipped my level 27shadow knight very well (he hasn't been twinked by any of my other characters, he's totally self sufficient). Right now Kassdax (my sk) has around 3,000pp worth of gear and has a few hundred plat in the bank due to spider silks, bone chips and animal pelts/skins.

First thing is to hang in there - while there are some people who will have lots of plats at low levels, they are the exception and not the rule. Most of them will be alternate characters for people who have high level characters who pass older equipment and plat to alternatives so they can level faster. Most of us just slog along the hard way. The newbie armor quests are a great improvement for the game (before you ended up with strugling to get cloth and patchwork armor) in terms of what you can get. The items take work, but like everything else in RL or EQ, the end product is worth it.

The gobs in BB (esp aqua) actually give a lot of plat for their level. I get between 10 plat and 33 plat (plus gold) for hunting Hill Giants in Rathe (45 pally) and usually get 30 or so plat for playing 90 to 120 mins in LDON as split. I have been saving a horse (or liz) for quite some time and only have about 8,000 of the 10,000 or so needed. I could have given those funds to my lower level alts (we have 2 accounts) and bought some uber items in addition to the hand me downs that they have. Bottom line is that money will be an issue for quite sometime as you progress (that magic ring that you had to have at level 12 gathers dust in your bank at level 30 when better stuff drops), but most of us manage to have a great time playing without twinking out.

    Greetings,

Most of the ways of making money at low levels have been covered by previous posters. I have another suggestion that might come in handy when you have a few pp in the bank - Vendor Mining.

This used to be a tradeskiller's art, before the whole of the NPC merchants' inventories became visible to us. Check through the list (hold the ALT key down while scrolling down to see all the names at once) and look for items that are cheap, but sell well in the Bazaar. Being a tailor, I've found small pieces of acrylia, plus acrylia bricks on vendors. With CHA over 115, pieces can be bought for 6gp each (sell in Bazaar for 25pp+), small bricks for 11pp (sell for 40pp+) and large bricks for 34pp (also 40pp+). Blocks aren't worth buying, as they are 103pp from vendors.

It's not just tradeskill supplies, however - I found 6 Chitinous Belts and a set of Brown Chitin Leggings on a vendor once. 6pp per item! The belts sold for 100pp each, and the leggings for 400pp. I have had numerous other little boosts like that, some better, some not so profitable.

The vendors in the Bazaar area, and around the trader building visible from the PoK main bank are pretty good sources for items. The 2 in the tents in Dawnshroud Peaks regularly have acrylia and/or hopper pelts of various qualities.

The downside to this is that it takes time, plus experience of knowing what to buy and what to leave on the vendor. Most servers have a market chat channel, however, so if you're not sure, ask for a price check on there and see how it compares to the merchant's price.

Not sure how much this approach will interest you, but I hope it helps anyway! Smiley: smile

Have you heard the old saying? "Friends are more valuable than gold!"

This is the essence of Everquest. Stuffing around farming to sell stuff in the bazaar, trawling the bazaar to "buy low and sell high" etc is missing the whole point of EQ.

Get to know a group of people, make an effort to form friendships and alliances. Spend your time grouping with these friends and go hunt for your own stuff.

Doing this you will equip one another with stuff many times better than you can ever hope to get in the bazaar.

And hell, you might even get to have some real fun.

You really want to do those newbie quests for your characters they are a god sent. The armor is very nice and will get you to level 20 before you will start looking at upgrading. As for plat. alot of the same components that are needed for the newbie quest armor sells well to the NPCs. The east and west commonland zone drops seem the best.
Right now will be the most difficult part of the game for you because you don't have any high level characters to twink your toon. You will have to decide which is more important to you, trying to catch up to the rest of the players on the server or enjoy playing the game.

P.S. You might also read the post futher down

Yodian, I was in your shoes once, or should say still am. I am a level 14 Barbarian Warrior and I often get people telling me that I'm twinked, and I'm here to tell you I'm not. I put a lot of time into farming and selling in bazaar to get my equipment. I would recommend fighting in East Commons outside of West Freeport, there are a lot of Spiderlings, Large Spiders, & Giant Spiders that all drop plenty of silks. Also Bears & Lion(ess) to fight for Pelts. I still usually just fight these for 30-60 minutes a night to stack up tradeskill items then go sell them in the bazaar. It's really easy to set up in bazaar too, just go up there and head over to the NPC Vendor and buy a trader bag, put the items you want to sell inside and then walk over to the trader stalls and type /trader. It's pretty self explanatory from there.

Good Luck & Don't Lose Hope. I Think The Game Is Much More Fun If You Work For What You Want/Have.

I have to concur with much that has been said here. For example, my Mage had over 3k by the time he was level 12 just by farming Spider/Spiderling Silks, HQ/MQ/LQ Cat and bear pelts, Eggs and Bone Chips. I did not level as fast as some others did because I would designate at least 1 hour of play time a day (if possible) to this kind of farming. Remember always that people are lazy and have no patience for farming to satisfy their tradeskilling needs.

I do have some other suggestions that may or may not be beneficial or doable. I view my toons as a "family" who all do some work to keep the family afloat. My "family"* of toons has almost a quarter of a million pp between them. Had more but I just spent 75k regeared a poor Shammy whose body rotted, she became very ill while playing and had to be hospitalized. When she got home and booted up her toon it was naked at bind point. With the advent of shared bank space it is easy to transfer items to a "bazaar mule" to sell in bazaar. The profits can go to buy gear for the toons who are not as capable of farming (such as your warrior).

    1. Make a Druid. Foragables and Fish for tradeskills are highly sellable. For example Mountain Dew sells for 10pp a pop on Luclin and that is foraged in the newbie zone in GFay, Cinnamon Sticks and Griffon eggs also sell well and they come from GFay and EC respectivily. As your Druid levels find other items that can be foraged/fished that sell well in bazaar. Forage in every LDoN you do. Print out the list of foraged items from eqdruids.com and check what they sell for in bazaar and then go foraging. As that Druid levels you can also port ***** and sell SoW for pp. Another thing a Druid can do is Imbue Emeralds (if Tunare worshipper) or Plains Pebbles (if Karana worshipper). I make 50pp a stack Imbuing Emeralds with my Druid. Once the Druid hits the mid 30's you can go off to RM and farm plat. My Druid at level 46 was pulling 1k an hour out of RM, helped buy my Wizard his first horse.

    2. (Am about to kick myself for publicizing this-been a good money maker for me) Merchant mine!!!! Specifically merchant mine LDoN zones-check all the vendors in the Wayfarer Camp zones and Oasis and LFay Ranger outpost. People generally sell off all the regular droppables at the end of an adventure. Do your research first but on Luclin what I look for is Goblin Bones, Sand Verbena, Pondweed, Ice Lichen and spell componets. The Gobby bones etc. can be bought off NPC vendor for about 10pp and resold in bazaar for 50 to 80pp-a profit of 40-70pp! Spell componets can be very lucrative but you MUST know what sells well, do your research! But so far I have found 4 copies of Words of Torment off NPC vendors for 8pp a copy which I turned around and sold for 10k a copy. Simple things like Bolts of Tallon, Dew Clover or Etched Signets can be bought for 7-10pp off NPC vendor and resold for 100-1,000pp.

    3. Do spell research-MAX it out! My Wizard has 200+5% Geerlock in research so can make all the level 50-60 NPC drop spells for WIZ/DRU/CLE/SHM. He alone has accounted for about half of the money my "family" has by making and selling spells. For example, Remove Greater Curse I sell for 35k (15k BELOW Luclin bazaar average) and I will have it sold within 15 minutes of putting it on my mule, the componets I either get in drops or merchant mine. Your Mage can do the same thing, except make MAG/DRU/CLE/SHM spells.

    4. As you get some high level toons you will start getting some nice drops that can be used to gear your lower level toons or sell for money to buy gear you want. My Cleric had an Architects bejeweled BP at level 36 which my Wizzy won in a LDoN and a Soulstripper and Obulus Death Shroud which the Wizzy farmed. My Mage had a Delightful Orb of Forgotten Magic at level 39 the same way. I had so much DRU/MNK/BST LDoN stuff that I just made a BL and twinked the bejabbers out of him.

    * The "family" consists of 65 EP/Time flagged Wizard, 53 Druid, 39 Mage, 38 Warrior, 37 Cleric, 33 Necro and 22 Beast Lord.
