Cheats in Random Roll -- An ugly subject!Follow

My daughter (30 yrs) asked me the following question:
"Dad, is there a way to roll 'loaded dice' in a Random Roll? A person on an adventure rolled over 900 three consecutive times. I asked my guild and someone said 'Yes! You can buy them in a player auction.'"

I don't know what a player auction, but I assume it's something outside EQ like buying a Character. I don't need to know either. My real question is can someone fake a random roll by using "loaded dice" or sending a message within the group that gives the same information contained in the /Rand message? It would have to be colored the same and NOT contain the "person x tells the party..." clause.

If there is such a cheat to /Rand, how can it be foiled?

I realize this discussion can stimulate cheats but I am one who believes knowledge can help overcome those cheats. Reply but don't go into computer language to explain.

Thanks!

This may not be what happened to your daughter, but it happened to me a long time ago.

Rolling for a Forest Loop, one of our party rolled a high nineties roll. We were about to let him loot when I noticed that the random roll was between 90 and 100. He said that he was just kidding and he wanted to see if we noticed. "lol JK".

But I feel sure that if we had not noticed he would have taken the ring.

Obviously this is very simple to prevent. But since most people in the game are honest, and assume that others are the same, they my not look further than the result of the roll.

I don't know if you can do it anymore, but it used to be that you could do a /shout blah blah blah....
that was just long enough for it to go to the second line, then put a "soandso rolls a 3 billion" message. I think the spacing has been fixed to prevent that now. It is possible that someone figured out what they base their random variable on and rig that, but that would be difficult, since I think it is based on a server time function.

The best way to deal with that is to first do a seed roll, say /random 1000. Whatever the result of that first roll is, is what you use for that items roll. That makes it much more difficult to have something already prepared to win the item.

There was a time when /random was determined client side and cheating did happen. Now it is done server side. I have not seen any evidence that it can still be manipulated.

Sounds like a statistical thing to me. I assume they were rolling 0-1000? So each roll you have a 10% chance of getting 900+. The previous roll has no bearing on the current roll, so even if you just rolled thirty 900+'s, your next roll has a 10% chance of getting 900+ as well. If you're a tabletop gamer, take 3 d10's and roll them until you get three 0's. Probably won't happen the first roll, but you won't be rolling dice for a month, either.

Anyway, randoms are handled serverside and are (probably) not hackable. Every tradeskiller knows the RNG is loopy, however, and you'll often get a string of high or low numbers (or a string of successes or trivial failures).

one PoN stalkers pickup group where we had decided before rolling that there would be no limit to the number of roles, I lost the first two or so diamonds. I, however, won the next eleven with a role of either 99 or 100. That came about two hours after winning a greenscale off sev with a roll of 100. great winning streaks are rare, but do happen. Heck, we did sev and chardok that day, every drop except the ones off the prince were won with rolls of 100.

I am on a great lucky rolling streak right now in LDON. I have won the last 4 augs that I have been in on and have won the last three items that I have been in on. But in every case, I am not the ML and am not conducting the roll. So unless these various MLs are cheating for me...I am just lucky!

My old guild used to do randoms a bit diff, each person rolling for an item is assigned a number, 1, 2, 3, etc. then ML or leader /randoms based on number of peeps rolling on an item, for example /rand 1 4 if four people rolling for an item. Your number comes up, you win.

i think i could probably finally quit EQ if I found out that there existed a way to cheat that and that people were using it.

hehe where have you been the last month or so?? why do you think the economy is so screwed up right now? a big part is of it is because ppl were duplicating plat, using hacks they discovered, and selling it.

I have always suspected that there are "canned" texts that can be inserted into eq and look like a random roll
I avoid any problems by changing the numbers I random often

random 345 789, random 200 2000, anything that makes it hard to use a canned text if you have one...

just eases my mind on the "possiblity" that someone might have figured out a way to cheat on random rolls
