Ive recently started up a bard and are starting to really enjoy playing the character. However im a bit confused about instruments. What exactly do they do? I kind of figured that they improve the song effect somehow, but how exactly? Then you cant melee when holding an instrument so whats the point?

Any answers would be appreciated!!

ok here it is:

this is my drum
Thunderous Drum of Karana

has a 2.8 modifier for percussion songs (when equiped)

here is a chant
Tuyen's Chant of Fire

without drum it does 42dmg per tick.
with drum it does around 120dmg per tick

instruments basically improve stats of songs more haste or more damage shield etc etc etc of course not all songs are affected by instrument modifiers.

So do u need to keep the drum equipped throughout the dot duration for it to do the extra damage or can u switch to melee when the dot has landed!

each instrument has a "modifier" on it which enhances songs that use that type of instrument (the songs tell ya what instrument ya need) some songs (like the invis song) require you to use an instrument or they wont work (the invis song needs a wind instrument i believe) a good percussion instrument is what makes a bard run as fast as they can.

Actuall there is one more thing, how do u know whether an item has a bard modifier on it?? For example the carved skull mask is supposed to have a singing modifier of 1.4 but this is not shown on the item description, so how are we supposed to know?

if it has a modifier on it it will say one of the following:"singing" "brass" "percussion" "wind" "stringed"

then u can try and figure out the mod or check here or eqdiva.com

You only have to hold the instrument at the point the song is "cast" for it to have its full effect. So you could sing a percussion song holding drums and, once it hits the target, switch to a lute and sing a stringed song, then a horn and a brass song. If you were fast enough, all three songs will stick at their instrument modified levels for their duration.

LDoN provides a slew of instruments that are mainhand. The advantage to which is that you can hold an instrument, sing and attack with an offhand weapon (or just hold some offhand stat item, but never two instruments*). Sometimes on raids I might sing AE resists with drum in mainhand and take idle whacks at the target with my offhand weapon. Even if you only own offhand instruments and can wield nothing else, sometimes its appropriate to use an instrument and forgo melee. Your drummed resists or debuff chants on a target may be worth a lot more than you poking at the mob with your pointy stick.

*The bard epic, the Singing Short Sword, counts as all instrument types and can be weilded offhand with an appropriate instrument in mainhand. Likewise for other 'instrument' weapons; gem inlaid sword, Troubadour's mace, et al.
