The forest of Misty Thicket acts as a gateway to the rest of Norrath for Rivervale's Halfling population. It is a fair-sized chunk of land which is divided into two areas by a great wall.
While the eastern side of the wall is well-guarded by the Guardians of the Vale, the western side is dominated by Deathfist Orcs and Runnyeye Goblins.

A Cleric of 14th level or higher should be able to Bind you to a new town area.

Give a /shout out and odds are someone will be nice enough to bind you. Just be polite if they say you need to wait a few minutes for them to finish up what they're currently working on...

NEW NPC/QUEST - BIDILS the QUICKHAND
# Feb 23 2001 at 9:59 AM Rating: Good
[Fri Feb 23 02:04:52 2001] You say, 'hail Bidils the Quickhand'
[Fri Feb 23 02:04:52 2001] Bidils the Quickhand says 'Why, hello there Droo ! And what brings ya to see little old me? Oh, let me guess! I am sure it is because ya wish t'buy a good spot of Jumjum and listen to [my tale]? Oh, quite lovely so! Why else would one well rounded Halfling come to see the great Bidils the Quickhand other than to hear of this rogue's great adventures!

[Fri Feb 23 02:05:44 2001] You say, 'tell me your tale'
[Fri Feb 23 02:05:44 2001] Bidils the Quickhand says 'Ahhh. . . I see the gods have found the time to be now for a good ear to lend to my words! So long as ya share the Jumjum, I can speak t'ya of the endless adventures and triumphs of Bidils the Quickhand! Now. . . where shall I begin? Yes! [The beginning], of course! Indeed, quite lovely so.

[Fri Feb 23 02:05:52 2001] Your Location is 335.64, -1993.31, -15.07

[Fri Feb 23 02:06:01 2001] Taking a screenshot...

[Fri Feb 23 02:06:18 2001] You say, 'what is the beginning?'
[Fri Feb 23 02:06:19 2001] Bidils the Quickhand says 'Yes, of course I shall begin at the beginning! No proper tale would begin anywhere other than the beginning! You see, good Halfling, I was once a humble rog. . . merchant within this here fair city. Oh, how the Jumjum and gol. . . merchandise flowed in then! Quite lovely, indeed, it was. Well then, where was I?

[Fri Feb 23 02:06:40 2001] You say, 'you were a merchant'
[Fri Feb 23 02:06:40 2001] Bidils the Quickhand says 'Ahhh yes! Those days were fair indeed. How I do miss them! Of course, that is not to say that Bidils the Quickhand does not appreciate the eyes and favor of Bristlebane upon him! In fact, it is quite the contrary! I do love a good prank! Yes, quite lovely so!

[Fri Feb 23 02:06:58 2001] You say, 'who is bristlebane'
[Fri Feb 23 02:06:58 2001] Bidils the Quickhand says 'Fizzlethorp Bristlebane, indeed quite the trickster and with a sense of humor! I bet you could not have seen that Bidils the Quickhand would have caught the eye of such a dignified individual, now did ya? Yes, The King of Thieves. . . and merchants finds it amusing when one [takes his possessions]!

[Fri Feb 23 02:07:20 2001] You say, 'what possessions did you take'
[Fri Feb 23 02:07:21 2001] Bidils the Quickhand 's eyes grow wide with an eager, child-like anticipation. ''Oh yes! Upon one of my several adventures through this great, glorious land of Norrath, I did stumble upon a [lovely treasure], indeed! Great skill and cunning was used, skill that belonged only to Bidils the Quickhand, and has yet to be surpassed within this realm!''

[Fri Feb 23 02:07:35 2001] You say, 'what lovely treasure?'
[Fri Feb 23 02:07:36 2001] Bidils the Quickhand says 'A lovely gem, far more beautiful than even the most delicate and fury feet of a halfling lass! It was larger than my face, and sparkled more than the most pure of Jumjum catching the rays of Karana's blessed skies! Indeed, it was a divine treasure to behold. . . but little then did I know that such a treasure truly belonged to the King of Thieves. . . and merchants himself! But no, such truths still would not have [stopped me]!

[Fri Feb 23 02:08:18 2001] You say, 'what gem?'
[Fri Feb 23 02:08:27 2001] You say, 'what stopped you?'
[Fri Feb 23 02:08:27 2001] Bidils the Quickhand says 'Ahh ha! I was not stopped, and the gem was mine! Right from beneath the arms of Bristlebane himself did I take it! That was when he noticed me. . . and that is when I was taken from the humble life of a merchant and placed within the glorious [realm of heroes]! Of course. . . Bristlebane took back the gem. What a shame. Indeed, quite so.

[Fri Feb 23 02:08:46 2001] You say, 'what is the realm of heroes?'
[Fri Feb 23 02:08:47 2001] Bidils the Quickhand says 'The realm of heroes, that is my new home. . . Well, it was. Ahhh, indeed, it is quite lovely! It is where all that catch the eyes of the gods in favor ascend if their deeds be true and worthy enough for note! Perhaps one day, Droo , you shall rise as well!! Look at Bidils the Quickhand, once a sturdy merchant and now a [humble servant] and rewarder of deeds!

[Fri Feb 23 02:09:55 2001] You say, 'what humble servant?'
[Fri Feb 23 02:09:56 2001] Bidils the Quickhand says 'Yes! Indeed, a humble servant I am! I complain not for my occupation. . . as I am humble. I collect [deeds and make recognition] of those who have caught the eyes of the gods. Why the gods do it not themselves, I am lost for answers. . . but, I do not complain. They are gods, you know. Quite busy! Indeed, lovely so!

[Fri Feb 23 02:10:08 2001] You say, 'what deeds and recognition'
[Fri Feb 23 02:10:08 2001] Bidils the Quickhand says 'Deeds! Yes, the gods are quite tricky and intelligent you know! They have found a way to mark deeds in the form of a coin! A [coin] in which one who has been so fortunate enough as to accept would give to me. . . or one of the [other Heroes] that have recently come to this land.

[Fri Feb 23 02:10:30 2001] You say, 'what coin?'
[Fri Feb 23 02:10:39 2001] You say, 'what other heroes?'
[Fri Feb 23 02:10:39 2001] Bidils the Quickhand says 'Oh yes! I am not the only one who has returned to Norrath in search of Heroes! There are many others, indeed! Although, as the gods, their colors vary. Some are [kind and gentle] while some are [vile and nasty] beings of which ya should watch ya'r back for.

[Fri Feb 23 02:11:04 2001] You say, 'what are kind and gentle?'
[Fri Feb 23 02:11:04 2001] Bidils the Quickhand sighs heavily, a twinkle in his eye and warm smile upon his heavy cheeks. ''Yes. . . none so as Ailerina the Gentle, as she was so rightfully named. A lovely lass. Tender as a gentle morning mist. . . Yes. . . Indeed, quite lovely so. An enchanting creature. . . and as pure as Tunare's good grace itself. It is no wonder she caught the Earth Mother's eye.''

[Fri Feb 23 02:11:23 2001] You say, 'what are vile and nasty?'
[Fri Feb 23 02:11:23 2001] Bidils the Quickhand glares and spits on the ground beside him. '' I know not why some of these. . . villains are called heroes. It is all part of the fold and plan, I am sure. However, I shall give ya this warning of one of them, perhaps the most vile of all, and that is Kizrak the Tyrant, a brutal creature of the Warlord who has quite the taste for halflings. . . and I mean not in the sense of good grace and kindness!''

In regards to the coin, these do not work:
'where do i find a coin?'
'where is the coin?'
'what coin?'
'what about a coin?'
'where is the coin?'
'tell me where the coin is'
'I have a coin'
'where can I get a coin?'
'where are the coins?'
'can i have a coin?'
'I want a coin'
'how do i get a coin?'
'give me a coin please'
'coin?'
'i want phat lewt'
'what coin do you speak of?'
'tell me about the coin'

If you give him jumjum stalks, brandy, regular coins or anything else I tried, he just thanks you for it.

If you mention the word rogue at all he says :
[Fri Feb 23 02:23:09 2001] Bidils the Quickhand says 'Shhh!! You mistake me! I said I was a merchant, did I not! Perhaps someone has placed a bit of brandy in your Jumjum. Here, give it to old Bidils the Quickhand, I will assure that you are well to travel home in time.

Fastest way I've gotten funds is to go on a killing spree of Fire Beetles and the like. Each eye will net you about 2sp or so, and keeping one of them in a main inventory slot will also increase your light radius for viewing.

Also, remember that killing creatures with stackable parts is good at lower levels, so go after those Bats and Snakes, since you can get about 8cp per wing, etc.

The money can be gotten, you just have to work for it a little bit.

Thousands of characeters have successfully started here and progressed through to level 12 before leaving so I pressume you're from out of town. If that's the case why do you assume that the locals will trade with you? People from Rivervale face the same problems when they finally get to Freeport or Qeynos!

Get some bandages and give them, one at a time, to Joogl Honeybugger to raise your faction until the merchants will trade with you. Kill Goblins or, if high enough, orcs for the same reasons. Don't expect to get rich quick like you do in Crushbone or Everfrost. Halflings sell patchwork armour they've made to make money instead of selling ruined wolf pelts! If you want "good" money go and kill Dervs in N.Ro.

As so many already know this is a great newbie zone. As a 9th lvl Mage I have found the hunting good here. Cast a pet, arm him, shield him and yourself as best as you can, target a monster (don't forget to con it if you need to) and pull it to yourself with a cheap Shock Of Fire, you and your pet beat on it, or you can use your pet to kite (the first method yields more experierence for you and your pet lasts longer). I'm still getting experience (and fast) from several of the lower lvl creatures. If trouble comes Invisibility casts pretty quickly. Enjoy

I have found that as a druid i grew up in misty and saw once and a while there was a froglok named slaythe near the orc camp i decided to see what his deal was .in the beastiary I found that he is 15-20(this is a major lie his lowest lvl i have seen is 19). At 20 i came here just to kill him a few times. you might have to turn in a few bandeges to the hunneybugger or whoever the quest involves. and you as bronin on top of the 2nd tower to the left going through the wall to runneye and ask him "what small favor". That spawns slaythe. at 20 with 142 wis i could solo him at yellow. He is great exp in 2 days i have gotten 2 lvls. it raises you faction with most of the rouge factions. I have gotten from being indifferent with him to being regarded warmly. I am going to get to lvl 24 here i am still getting about a blue bub per fight with him.
That is my 2cp.

I just noticed that with the latest patch, they added a berry patch. An area where three bags appear with berries inside. Once collected, they respawn in a few min.

it is located Northwest of the abandoned tower in the middle on the newbie zone (lvl 1-4 critters) at the bottom of the depression. the bags form a triangle pattern(if that helps you find them)
RE: free berries
# Oct 28 2001 at 12:23 AM Rating: Default
The berries are for the Cleric Supplies quest in the RV Clerics guild--go to Beek Guinders in the Cleric guild and give him two ruined wolf pelts, one black wolf pelt and one foraged berries (the berries in the bags on the ground); you will get a free Cleric spell, some money, experience and faction boosts.

I discovered this little gem while trying to hold my experience level so members of my regular group could catch up. I camped the bixie spawn point (Misty Thicket wall, top of tower two towers right from the gate). I was averaging 3 silvers for each bixie stinger. about every 10th bixie or bixie drone would also have a honeycomb that I could auction for 1-2pp to enchanters in Misty Thicket. The only real hazard is the bixie queen who can beat up a low level character and the fact that the bixies will frequently die on the lip of the tower and fall to the ground outside the tower. You have to be careful running down to retrieve the goods or risk damage from a fall.

Shout politely, asking if any high level Druid will teleport you to Misty Thicket. That will take hours off your journey time. The lternative is slow and dangerous (if you're low enough to want to go to Misty in the first place). Get the route maps off WWW.EQATLAS.COM.

ok, to get to misty thicket from the newbie lift in kelithen -
first, follow the path till you get to butcherblock mountins
follow the path in butcher. when it forks, follow to the right
get on the boat - it docks at the right side, as you come in the gate,
enjoy the scenic route through the ocean of tears
get off in freeport. find your way to west freeport, and zone out to
east commonlands. follow the path, when it forks, go left, which will take you to
west commonlands. follow this path, which will take you to
Kithicor forest - do NOT go through here at night. when you zone in, take a hard right and follow the zone wall. it will eventually bring you to
RIVERVALE - get bound here, and zone in to misty for some good newbie hunting =)

ok, pianissiomo got this pretty much perfectly imo - however, a few stratagies he may not have gone into are about avoidance. there are two fairly nasty goblin mobs that WILL spawn, usually at the camp to the far left of rivervale. the gobling alchemist will slaughter a group of 3 lvl 7's in no time. Mooto, the other mob, is thankfully not as nasty. 3 lvl 6's can take mooto.

if either of these two bad boys is spawned long enough, they will run around and kill anything attacking their fellow goblins. and yes, they do check all 3 camps - so if ya see em, i recommend training them to guards unless someone is specificlly looking to kill one.

other than that - at level six you can camp the two goblins who spawn inside the cave to the runnyeye zone for good xps. also, when you are killing gobs, dont forget to turn in the warbeads to the sherrif above the bank - good xp and he'll give you food and drink - enough so that you don't usually have to buy any.

after the gobbys are green to you, i suggest hunting NEAR the runneye zone line for young kodiaks and the wasps.

ok, after you finish in misty thicket, you should be lvl 10 or 11. so where too next?? i personally suggest you do one of two things. run to qeynos, get bound, and hunt the bandits and their ilk in west karana. or, run to freeport, get bound, and find one of the orc camps in the commonlands. after lvl 12, hit the derv camps in north ro and west commons. stay in those till around lvl 15, then head out to north karana, and solo the beetles there - at lvl 19, down to lake rathe... and so on. anyway, hope this info helps

You lucky halfling (and those of other races smart enough to make their way here) get to hunt in the best newbie zone in the game. There is really no reason to leave here before level 10 at least. From level 1 to 4 stay behind the wall and hunt all of the easy Mobs there. I would suggest spiderlings for those tailors and bixie drones because the stinger they drop is worth decent money at that level. Then move on past the wall and start killing the big boys. Stay close enough to the guards to be able to run for help, but not too close as the halfling guards are know for going on an enthusiastic romp through the Thicket stealing everyones kill. Really, the area is so small, that you are rarely more than a short run to help, so feel free to wander a little. At 5, start sith the rats, then move up to bats and finally goblins. By 8 you should be able to handle entire camps of goblins yourself. Then you can kill young kodiaks, giant wasps and scarabs to get to 10 or 11. You can also camp the orc camp in the back corner starting around level 8. Of course, if you group, you can do all of this even sooner. The beauty of this is that most people seem to leave this zone by level 5 or 6 to seek their fortune in the wide world (and also to meet friends in Freeport or Qeynos). This leaves those who decide to stay up to 10 with plenty to hunt. Even if you go meet friends in the Freeport area, I suggest you head back here when you find yourself in a solo situation. This is still the best solo zone for these levels.
RE: Don't leave MT too soon

I have been able to make it to level 12 within Misty Thicket (with a short stint in the Gorge that garnered 2-3 bubbles total at level 11) and still be challenged. As a druid this is a great proving ground. Venturing to the orc camp to stake a claim there for a while and then hunting scarabs, spiders adn wasps for variet works pretty well to go from 10-12. The nearness of the wall and its guards is a nice safety feature for those more timid.

I am finding 12 to be the limit of value for the most part and think the nearness of the Gorge works great. The plan is to hunt here until 14 is hit and then with SOW and Bind make my way to greener pastures in Qeynos or Freeport. Will let you all know how that works out.

A nice side bonus of Misty is that it is usually not too crowded with 15 or so being the norm. Of these there are usually a few high levels mixed in. I don't know if its this small atmosphere or our halflings chamrs but I have found most people to be real friendly and helpful, many even donating items or helping with free buffs and the like.

A good place to grow up.

I happen to think that Misty Thicket is possibly the best newbie zone in the game. A well-played character can get from level 1-12 here no problem. The wall separates the easy guys and the harder stuff. A great place to get from level 6-9 are the scattered goblin camps near the runnyeye entrance. If you don't want to level in the newbie zone you are in now I suggest moving your character to Misty Thicket.
Tactics
# Aug 22 2000 at 9:30 PM Rating: Decent
Hunt on the Rivervale side of the wall until level 4-5. You can pull back to the Rivervale tunnel mouth and the guards there will not KS - they will only attack if you pull into the tunnel.
After level 4-5 head out through the gate in the wall and turn left - up to the top of "bat hill". There are a range of bats there to take you up to level 6-7.
Do not hunt or pull near the gate - the guards are very active and will KS off you - nothing more annoying then investing most of your HP and/or mana in a monster only to get zero exp or loot because some guard kills it.
Soloe or group to kill goblins from evens on. Collect the warbeads (destroy the shattered ones) as you can trade these in 4 at a time for exp, faction, money and food with the Sherrif.
Dont ignore the quests, which particularly at low level can result in decent experience and coin.
RE: Tactics

This zone is excellent for newbies. I leveled up to lvl 10 faster than any other character I had. I fought on Rivervale side until level 4-5 and then foraged over to zone edge of misty near Runneye tunnel entrance. Yes, you have to watch out for Mooto because he comes by every once in a while and unless grouped or around some other helpful higher level players you will most assuredly die! I plucked around for giants bats for a level until it became obvious I would be here a long time at this pace. I then decided to camp inside runneye tunnel half way back and wait for the two goblins to spawn. I cast harmony on one and then pulled the other. I usually snared, let him run a bit away from other goblin, rooted and then cast. If he resisted I would try some melee work and try to cast root a few more times. Sometimes I got lucky (at lvl 6-7) and killed him but if my health was dropping it was only a short run down tunnel to runneye zone. Don't stray to far in Runneye because it's dangerous to your level but inside zone is not too bad. Basically, it worked out that one spawned, killed it, medded and then the other spawned, killed it and so on and so forth. Break the spawn and it's killing fields all night. Great XP and little risk. Oh, Mooto will often come running in when you pull one so keep your eyes open and book it if he comes. You can't handle mooto and a blue goblin alone.

Very often I never got hit once if target didn't resist. Also, in down times practice Forage, Hide and Sneak. Really useful to have later on.

Hope this helps.

PS: West commons along Kith zone is the next place to go for 2-3 levels and then you get you level 14 spells and then the world is you tree. heheh

PAST THE WALL *gasp* *gasp* u hanging with the big boys now.....u kill the wolves and bears around even if u a druid (no factions its cool) and then work your way up to wasps at like 7 and then the gobs at 9 to 11 (i think thats it) then off to the orc camp till 13 and then u have to leave *sigh* *sigh*

My Rogue and Cleric both made level 10 before leaving (I've never bothered with a Warrior). The Rogue has it very easy in Misty Thicket - so easy that stuff conned Green for him at lower levels than for my Druid or Cleric. By level 10 if the orc camp is broken a Rogue can solo it and Mooto is no plroblem either. However you do have to be prepared to fight into your last HP bulb.
When and Where to go from Misty Thicket
# Aug 23 2000 at 7:57 AM Rating: Decent
As a halfling cleric on Luclin, Cubbun, I found that by lvl 11 I was finding less and less things to kill that would give me experience. From there I moved on to North Ro (The trip is easier if u have made the trip to Freeport before). North Ro entrance is I believe in the side wall in the East Commonlands. Just ask around. BEFORE U GO ON, GET A BIND IN FREEPORT. NOTHINGS WORSE THAN WALKING BACK FROM MISTY THICKET TO NORTH RO WITH NOTHING TO DEFEND YOURSELF. In North Ro I killed the Cutthroat Dervs there which are ok experience and pretty good loot. I would only fight there for 2-3 lvls. Then move on to Oasis of Marr. The best way to lvl there is to solo any crocs suitable to your lvl or have only 1 or 2 other members if your scared. By this time most casters can bind themselves, so bind yourself on a pier (the giant stones sticking out of the water; get high on the pier). Orcs are not the best experience but offer massive amounts of loot in the return. Always keep on the lookout for dry bones skeletons unless u have a group (They con yellow to me and I'm lvl 19 as of the moment). ALWAYS watch out for sand giants, which are huge men roaming the desert, spectres, these flowing rob creatures that always wander around the orc highway, and aqua goblins, these light blue colored monsters that will kill anyone in their path. At lvl 17-18 I suggest moving to South Karana. The best way is to invest in a teleport to North Karana cause u have a long walk ahead of u. There aviaks are the best route, but watch out for the harriers and the avocets. HAVE FUN AND MAKE HIGH LVL FRIENDS =).
