Named for the natural geysers and springs found in its rocky peaks, these mountains surround the gnome city of Ak'Anon. It is known that the dragons had once dwelled here, for the fossilized remains of very young dragon can be viewed inside a small valley. The presence of Steamfont's drakes also indicates that the region may once have had some greater significance to the children of Veeshan. However, that history was lost long before the arrival of the elves or the surfacing of the gnomes.

The mountains of Steamfont are bordered by the Lesser Faydark to the east, and the gates to the glorious subterranean city of Ak'Anon to the far west - gates installed safely within a mountain face and heavily guarded by some of Ak'Anon's most renown warriors.

Whizzlebang Twempt can be found at between the zone lines for LP and DSH.

Found him this morning and here's the info i got from him.

"Hail Whizzlebang Twemp"

Well Well! you look foolish... er... Strong and Powerful! What would you say to a business [proposition]?

"what proposition?"

Well it's simple enough <name>. Being the observant <race> i know you are, I'm sure you've noticed the large floating contraption in this area! That monstrosity must be dealt with and the Ak'anon Strike Force is on the [job]!

"what job?"

It's clear to us in the ASF that we must fight clockwork with clockwork. That's why we are proud to have constructed our I.R.A. to deal with the upstart Maldrath. Once we have worked out the, er, [kinks] we'll be able to swiftly deal with this situation!

"what kinks?'

Well, with any ambitious project there are bound to be problems to overcome! Surely you know that! Actually, <name>, that's why i am so glad you stopped by! You see, we need some help with a few easy [tests]. If you are [interested], i assure you that you and any friends you bring along will be richly rewarded.

"What tests?"

It's quite simple. The I.R.A. is our Infinitely Regenerative Automaton. Designed and constructed to be an unstopable and destructive force, I.R.A will recover from any defeat and return stronger and stronger! All we need now are a few practice runs. Are you [interested]?

"I am interested"

Excellent <name>! Please let me know when you are [ready] and i will transport you to our secret testing facility. Good luck and we assure that your next of kin will be contacted in the event that anything unexpected might occur while you are assisting with our testing!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Bring a raid force, sounds like this event will be fun, think this quest NPC is lvl 80, he coned yellow to me at 79. Gonna come back with raid force later tonight and try this new thing out. This is the first Raid event for EQ's Living Legacy and is in effect from 6-9-08 thru 6-15-08 (at least for now)

Steamfont Event on Test Server??
# Apr 27 2004 at 2:56 PM Rating: Good
OK. First of all, I am a level 12 NON-TWINKED necro on Test Server. Yes I know about /testbuff, but that would be twinking. Anyway, I log on to collect more yellow recluse silks in Steamfont to complete the newbie armor, and I hear a crier stating the Eldrich Collective is launching an attack on Meldath the Malignant. This sounds interesting, so I follow the NPC’s running from Ak’Anon to the area in front of the Minotaur Caves.

WOAH!! There are two armies on either side of the area. There must be 50+ guys on each side and more keep coming. Eldrich summoners, champions, and others. Other side has Malignant firecallers, death warriors, and the like. The battle begins and everybody is killing everybody. I’m like HOLY S**T!!!

Everyone is indifferent to me and no one is attacking me. So I take my level 12 **** onto the field and try to loot a corpse. I find this:

Corrupted Crystal of Decay (Augmentation)
HP: +25 MANA: +25 Endurance: +25
Recommended level of 65

I then screamed in joy like a little girl on Christmas morning!! W00T!! I then proceed to loot like crazy. At some point, my summoned skellie pet must have attacked something because I started gaining experience. Double W00T!! After looting like mad for 15-20 minutes something finally smacks me and I die. So I pull out my black ceremonial coffin from the bank and call my corpse. I go buy another coffin, throw it in the bank, and head back out. All the corpses are gone and the battle is over. Sigh. On the plus side, I got like 2 yellow in experience after dying, and check out the phat lewt!! It’s all Magic Item, Lore Item, and No Drop. None of it is on Allakhazam, so I will be sending in screenshots soon.

I have not seen anyone mention the best part about this zone yet. In that pit thing, near the druid rings, spawn little lvl 2 infected rats that drop plague rat tails about 1 out of 3 times. The tails sells for about 1.5 plat, which is nice at lvl 2 8D. also, the kobolds often dropped regular 6 slot backpacks, like the ones merchants sell for 5ish gold each (although i dont see it on any of the kobold's drop lists, but trust me, they do). ALSO, the kobolds (at the time this is posted) drop furs, which sell for about 7 gold each and fangs, which sell for about 3 gold each if i remember correctly. i think that makes this one of the best noob zones for loot, but thats just IMHO

It is a magic item but does nothing. What is it used for? It's not listed in any gnomish or tinkering recipes that I have found nor is it in this sites database. Anybody have a clue. Merchants will buy it though. Cant remember the exact price though, maybe around 4 gold or something.

Any info would be appreciated.

ok folks -

I don't think I've gotten an honest answer while playing the game go here goes:

Anyone know the 'market' value of Iron Oxide's that drop off the elementals ?

Apparently pottery and smithing folks need them - and they are 'rare' drops.

Even a ballpark idea would be helpful..
thanks

Im not sure on the price people will pay. but on Kane Bayle they are asking for 10pp a piece. Whether he got it or not is another story however. Also they arnt that rare if you know where to look. 1 russet okide and 1 iron oxide spawn on the ground behind two different machines near the min caves. I dont know how long it takes to respawn however. Im a little out of date on the prices as well. It has been about two months since i saw that price but it might help to give you an idea.

Old posts. But... as a tradeskiller, with a decent bank account, I know that sometimes I need this stuff.

I have tried to collect it myself, and it takes a while and is boring, so personally I pay anywhere from 50-100pp if I want it quick.

Basically, just see if anyone is selling, if you're the only one, you can mark it up because eventually someone will need it, and not want to go spend 30-45 minutes trying to get it.

If there's a lot selling it, and it's 10pp, go ahead and set yours at 10pp too, because that is a fair price.

It's just sometimes when you are the only one there selling a particular item, you can reap the benefits of impatient players like myself.

I was playing an alt and wandering around Steamfont when I came accross 4 NPC's standing around, thinking they were the ones that droped the pages for the casters book I killed them quickly, but all they droped where these weird weapons:
Jibble's Stelleto
Vyntok's Mace
Domlix's Short Sword
Winex's Staff
Faeroneliop's Staff

What the heck are these? Some new quest or were they put in for the PvP servers? All are no drop and they got newbie stats.

just wanted to say on test server they redone the steamfront mountains for the newbie armor quests. they added 4 more kobald camps and a second minatour slavers camp. also a bunch of new critters to liven thing up..overall its not too bad.. only real bad part is that they added a few too many aggressive monsters(lvls 3-5) in the newbie area. Kobalds give pos faction to the gemcutters. and the evil gnomes have there own separate armor quests(just to make it tempting to play that evil gnome warrior)

I believe his name is Fendar Starpyre. have any of you seen him before? i tried asking him a number of questions like "how you doin'?" and "what's up with that smell that all old people seem to have in common?" and "give me money", anyway, he ignored me.

Best Newbie Zone??
# Oct 02 2001 at 9:40 PM Rating: Decent
4 posts
Many Message boards have said this.

I surely hope not....

I'm still very new to this game. (only about 1 1/2 weeks) I have a 9th level Gnome Necro. I've played him pretty much solo here, only a few groups.

From level 1-4 it was pretty easy. The newbie zone in South East Corner with Druid ring to sell stuff is nice... Only certain death happens every now and again with an NPC Bugglegupp. She always seems to spawn on me when I'm resting. Even at level 9 she kills me if given 1/2 a chance.

Level 5-7 was alot harder. Not much that you can kill and still get exp. The Kobold camp real close to the newbie zone is nice.. Only Bugglegupp still **** you off from time to time. By 7th the only guys you can get exp for and still take are about 1/2 the Kobolds that spawn and they are blue.

Finally you get to 8th. As a Necro I can finally take on yellows 1 at a time and kick thier buts. Skeletons and mino slavers are your prey. 2 places to really hunt. Near the Windmills and the Ancient Dragon Skeleton.

There are more skeletons in the North East corner.. But you are too small to hope to get through the Earth and Wind Elles, the young dragons and clockworks to get there saftly. Also there are 2 wandering bad boys out there. The Mino Hero and Orc Priest ( I think) Both will kill you on site.. maybe before then.

Back to the Skeles in the Dragon Skeles. You can only take 1 at a time. So hit the one on the dragon's mouth. He will be the only one to drag out to you. Problem. Slow regen on him. and 3 monsters have a chance of regining. Mino Slaver (good), Skeleton (very good) and a gnome skeleton (bad, no money, no exp) then you gotta wait forever for the next regen. The plus is that both the mino slavers and skeletons are anywhere from yellow to blue. Also 2 times today a wandering NPC Freddi Doogie or something like that killed me for no reason. Just came up while I was medding and stomped the **** outta me.

Ok.. So now you try the Windmills. several monsters there. Skeletons, Pumas (dangerous), Young Dragons (dangerous), Plague rats (very dangerous) and a Female Rat (extreamly dangerous). Skeletons and Pumas you can take prolly waisting most of your mana. Only big problem is that plague rats and the Female rat will gang up with anything on you. You will get plauged and the female rat hits really really hard for a rat. Run for the Windmills if you get in trouble. At least that is what everyone says.. There is an NPC that will kill all the monsters that come near the windmills..

NOT!!!! count on him to kill all the ones that you feared or got on the run (so you get no exp) and count on him to stand off and laugh at you while you die running circles around the Windmills.

Up to level 10 there are aprox 4 sure fire deaths that wander around, (Bugglegupp, Freddie Doogie, Mino Hero, and the Orc Priest). An unreliable guard at the Windills, Halv the next closest guard is camped so he is no help (I don't complain about that too much the killers let me loot him so I got alot of money. laugh).

Well all I can say is that for me, this zone has been full of death. My corpses have littered nearly every part of this zone. Of course I know I'm still new and not a very good player, but I tell all you wouldbe gnomes to becareful here and walk softly and quickly.

Hope this helps,

Mikben

Get to Level 40 or so to take your revenge on this sadistic creep. Or a couple of the other guards...killing guards is rotten then add the whole gnome factor, its a wonder I can sleep at night.

I actually had this guy attack me just alittle behind the mills, not really near the mino caves though and I luckily had a SoW and was pretty fast at the moment so I decided to run for the mills. This sucker killed the watchman that tried to help me then killed me and still had pretty much full health.

Hey my name is Hobe im a druid. one thing over looked by this zone is that it is not a noobie zone. you can lvl 30-40 here fast if you have a soloing class, druid/necro/mage/wiz/shaman 34+. once you hit 30 go to the city gates there is a guy called cargo clocwork outside a hut pull him kill him do whatever he is alwasy 30 but is a bit of an overcon as he has 900hp and i know that green mountain giants at this point have 1k+ kill him till 34ish no faction hits just easy kills. then you can kill the guards halv in particular as they are in the middle of feilds with no freinds and good for kiting class. you can kill him and his chums up to 40. decent loot as they drop a FS sword each time some cash and commonly cruddy armour words/runes.

Be very careful in the caves... The slavers are in the teens, but there is also a Mino Lord who pops at the wheelbarrow, and he's about 25. Don't go too deep, or you'll run into Meldrath the Malignant, mean little gnome Necro who is about level 35 with a pet, too.
If you do decide to kill slavers for exp, send an /ooc to everyone hunting the Hero, as killing slavers pops the Hero. They (me included) will certainly appreciate any who will pop him for them...
Also, if no one is huting the Hero, when he spawns, he then walks around behind the giant gear, and then into the entrance to the caves, so if you then try to leave, you will surely run into him. He is level 35... Good Luck!

Was hunting clockworks in steamfont not to long ago and ran into my new best buddy named "A Kobold Missionary"

Well he and I did not get along... so I killed him :) He then drops a Lore (No-Drop) item called an Encrypted Document. Anyone know what new quest this is for. I know what you're thinking.... I should have asked him, before I killed him. Alas, it is too late for that now.

I assume sense the missionary is a new spawn from one of the latest update patches that there must be a new quest with this item.

Anyone have any ideas???

This guy is for the odd cold iron necklace quest. You need to kill him and get the encrypted scroll. Here is the basic rundown of the quest (that I know so far):

Kill the High Shaman in Warrens and get odd cold iron necklace.

Take this to the erudin cleric guild (the one right by the teleporter to the palace). There is a woman in there who will tell you to take it and a note to glyssa sonshaw in FP.

Go to FP and give the necklace and a note to glyssa. She tells you she doesn't know much about it but knows a kobold in Akanon who does. Off to Akanon.

In the bar (near the zoo) there is a kobold who is sitting there. Give him the note and the necklace and he will tell you about the medallion and its meaning. Says he really doesn't know much about it though. He does have a glyph translator that he gives you. He tells you to take it and to get the doctrine of the kobold missionary to the original lady back in Erudin. He also tells you that the missionary is in steamfont.

This is where I am stuck. Have not seen the missionary and I sat in Steamfont for hours. Hoping to go back and see him before he gets killed by the guards. I think this will wrap up the quest. Not sure what you get.

Hope this helps a little bit. Sorry about the vagueness, but I wasn't writing any of this down while I was doing it. Assumed it was already here =).

Haven't found a reason yet for the note, but here is what I have found out about the Kobold Missionary:

1. The sucker hits HARD, plus he's a caster. He pops fairly regularly in the middle of the field out in front of the mino caves.

2.His aggro radius seems fairly small, which is good because this zone IS predominantly a newbie/low lvl zone. The fact that he's over by the mino caves (where most of the high-lvl spawns are) should give you a clue! However it's very easy to trip his aggro so here's how to avoid it:

Med/heal against cliff wall south of mino entrance. You will not aggro the minos, can avoid aggroing this guy, and can still be in a safe spot to pull and kill the many cool things in this part of the zone (drakes elementals etc). Just don't wander too far into the middle of the field!

3. There is almost always some high lvl guy(s) camping the Mino Hero. Try sticking your head inside the mino caves, and if somebody is, they'll usually be hanging out at the first "room" there, watching the spawn point for the placekeeper mino. (you'll see them whack the spawn once then run out into the field to the Hero's spawn point). The cool thing about this is that a lot of them will be nice and heal/buff you but also keep in mind they're camping so don't bug them TOO much. Another cool things is that if you /yell for help, they'll come put the smack down on this lil' fella.

Hope these tips help! :)

Tried this tactic at level 13 with my druid, works well with a second person also.
Stand next to a rogue clockwork, they often stand still. Snare a drake or harpy, you could use any spell. The drake or harpy casts an area effect spell which aggros the clockwork, your free pet. You have to outdamage the clockwork or have a partner attack it so u get exp from the original target. If the clockwork does more than half the damage you will not get exp. I pull the mob to the edge of the zone so other mobs dont aggro and mess up the plan. Used this to get to 14 in no time, then exp bad for my level so left. Should work in lavastorm or any zone with creatures that use area effect spells.
Happy hunting.

I am a L12 Dwarf Pally who has discovered the great area of Steamfont.... the windmill area is excellent for my level to solo. I can destroy harpies, drakes, earth elementals with moderate difficulty... (make sure 100% health) and get great XP as a solo.. close to one bubble per creature that cons blue. I am careful to be in a position where I can run to guard and I make sure that I have my lay hands to use in a pinch.

One problem are the steam elementals. I can't fight them at all... I guess I need magic weapon? How can I get one? Is there some way my axe can be made magic at some price?
RE: Steam Elementals

Any elementals (water, fire, earth, air) are considered "magical" creatures, and you need to have either magical weapons or magical armor (gloves/boots) to be able to hit and damage the mob. Otherwise you're doing zero damage. :-)

As I was making the undead around the minatar cave deader...I noticed under the geyser around the gear area four small red blobs. Always curious, I picked them up and lo and behold, I had four "Moss Covered Drake Scales." Does anyone if these are part of a quest or just newbie loot.

On another note...during the same period, I attacked a decaying skeleton for the fun of it and suddenly had sorta a real fight on my hands including experience. Being 14th level...I was surprised. Is this normal in Steamfront or some sort of glich?

I, too, have had a similar experience with the skeletons. At lvl 9, a normal skeleton that conned yellow to me attacked me, yet, I was able to kill it. After a while I decided to hunt some more of them and ran into a Decaying Gnome Skele conning white. It killed me. I blinked my eyes in disbelief as the words RETURNING TO HOME POINT, PLEASE WAIT appeared on my screen. This does indeed seem to be a glitch as it was hitting much harder and seemed to have more hp than the skele before it. I guess I'll never know.

The skeletons around the clockwork rubble area are much harder than normal skeletons, and they spawn at five points around the giant gear. The moss-covered drake scales are worthless(4cp), but I've heard they're for a quest that hasn't yet been implemented.

I have just found those skeletons, and they are more difficult than the skels floating in the other Steamfont areas. However, they are great experience. For a Necromancer with the undead blast spells, they are very doable, even at 8th level. They return 1/4 buble experience per kill. They con white or yellow to my necromancer. This may be common knowledge, I don't mean to steal another person's idea so please correct me if someone else had it first. I (as a cleric) hunted the skels that spawn around the dead dragon, but couldn't take more than one at a time. I could only pull the spawn by the dragon's nose because the others would gang up on me. But if the center of the three skels at the other end (opposite the nose) is a little green gnome skel, then it won't argo on you and only the one skel you pull will come after you. If the greeny is not in the center, then shout you are training skels to mill (if you are the only one hunting them, other players might be a little mad if you train all the skels to guards). Good luck young clerics!

RE: help a newbie necro

OK, I HAVE A STRATEGY FOR YOU...
follow the path from the city to the right and just before the Windmills there are three small hills... here kill large rats, decayed skeletons, and Kobold runts until 4th level.
go back to city and sell... Then leave city and this time go to the left... right where the path ends there is a Kobold camp... kill Kobolds until lvl 7, but watch out for Kobold Shamans...
then follow the left wall northward, past the entrance to Lesser Faydark and you will see another Kobold camp... Kill Kobs here, Rogue cleaners, and brittle skellies (these are tough) until 9th or 10th level... At 10th you have the decision to either hike it up to Crushbone in GF or to go back behind the windmills to the minos.
With my Necro, on a Care Bear server, I went to the minos in a group with 2 other Necros at 10th lvl and killed minos and when I got an axe I auctioned it for a trade, One axe = 2 stacks of bone chips, otherwise sell it for 5pp... youll make more friends on the trade though because a lvl 3 character who can kill decayed skellies REALLY appreciates earning a Mino Axe. You can do the minos until like 14 or so. But I wouldnt, Id do it until like 12th, because at 12 you get the spell Bind Affinity. once you get BIND, Travelling becomes A LOT easier. You should also have Gather Shadows too. The character I found this out with is a Gnome Rogue on the Vallon Zek server. i hope this info has helped you. If youre ever on Vallon, send me a tell, my name is Jaidee, and Ill help any other lower lvl character whenever I can... unless youre PK'ing Gnomes... then my advice is always look behind you...

The Other Kobald Camp

I'm posting this because I think many people don't know about this camp. In general Steamfont is neatly divided into two regions. The low level region is before the windmills and off the path to the left of Ak'Anon, and the rest of the zone is pretty much the higher level region. There is one exception to this. For some odd reason, a kobald camp was placed in the far end of Steamfont. Much like the perenially camped kobald camp near Ak'Anon, this camp can easily be handled by a group of level 4-5's or by a solo level 7 or 8. The difference is that nobody knows it is there, so it is often open even when the zone is full. To get there, head left out of Ak'Anon, towards the first camp. Run along the wall and past the LF zone. Then cross to the right and follow the mountain ridge to your right. Stay in the Mountains, since there are plenty of critters who will eat a lower level alive if you go too far out. You will eventually get to the camp, which is right in a corner by the mountains. There are 4 kobalds who spawn here, plus one sentry. You need to keep a watch out for wandering skeletons and other nasties, but most of them stop short of the camp, letting you free to hunt just kobalds. The hard part is breaking the camp, so that you can just kill them as they spawn. If you are powerful enough to take the whole camp, them you are obviously in great shape. But here's a trick I have found works. Don't be afraid to die. At this level, you lose very little xp for dying. Just try to kill at least two of them before you get killed, and you should have enough time to run back and start to take them in rotation thereafter. It is worth the death to get the whole camp to yourself. Of course, this place is best if you can get a partner, but that is not always possible.
RE: The Other Kobald Camp

A tip for hunting here is not to go up on the ridge right in front of the camp. You can go right up to the foot of that ridge and not aggro the kobolds, so there's no real need to go up there. If you do, you run the risk of aggroing the skellies, pumas, and stuff that's generally several levels above the kobolds.

You may be tempted to pull the kobolds and kobold scouts up on the ridge. That's fine, but pull them down to the valley floor beside or behind the camp. If you try to fight them up on the ridge, sooner or later you will get adds and you will die.

The safest nearby place to heal up is probably behind the camp, snuggled right up against the zone wall. Just don't pass too close to the tents on the way there, or you'll aggro any kobolds that you haven't already killed.

I have found an area in steamfront that will allow you to solo quite effectively from levels 10-14. Follow the path to the windmills then pass them on the right and follow the mountain side to the Minotaur caves. Just past the caves are some large mechanical remnants.
Here is what I like to call the circle of bone. There are 5 skeleton spawns here, and they do not move from their spawn point unless provoked. Heres how it works: find a blue or white, kill it. Heal and med, or if a tank, bind wound to 1/2 health then rest til 3/4. Move to the next skeleton, repeat; and so on. By the time you get all the way around the circle the first skeleton has repopped. I havent done this with a pure caster but it seems like it should work, just med instead of healing. I have done this successfully with a cleric (of course) a warrior, a druid and a ranger. The xp is good, the fights are safe and if your alert, the MoBs in the mino cave area wont bother you. The loot ain terrible either; rusty weapons and the occasional wood shield, and bone chips sell for 3-5pp a stack. The skele's are far enough apart so that you can pull them a slight distance to the center of the circle and none of the others will agro on you.

Although, it may be a "Safe Zone", the Minotaur Hero will spawn somewhere along the wall occassionally, on a small hill (more a hump then a hill).

Don't think that you can camp all 5 skeletons. The spawns are far enough apart that 2 individuals can divide the location.

Theres a clockwork spider by the entrance to aknon. The spider is lvl 30 and has rougly 850 HP.
The great thing is this spider only runs at a walk, and is even funny to watch at snare speeds.
Its very easy to nuke walk, nuke for any caster class. The trick is pulling him without agroing his handler. I will not reveal 100% but lets say you need to pull a very low lvl creature of a certain type across the front of him while its agroed on you. This will make the cargo clockwork agro on you without pulling its handler who tends to cast lvl 29 wizard spells. Sometimes if you get way too much space between yourself and the cargo, it will pop back by the handler who will make a bee line for you, If at some point you can't find the spider and its not dead then I suggest you zone or log asap. When the clockwork spider dies a little driver pops out and dosent do anything to you, dont kill him or you will take a gemchopper faction hit, you get no faction for killing cargo clockwork and you dont lose any either. The only problem with this is the spawn time for the cargo is about 5 minutes so if theres more than 1 person doing this then it could get kinda slow.

Guess that would be a spiderling - found that out the hard way when one followed me back as I well selling. Came out the little hut and got attacked by it. I thought of it as bothersome - and sent my pet to kill the annoying creature. The cargo spider took exception and had me for dinner. That the hard way for a level 4 necro to learn not to bring anything back from the newbie area.

Hail -

My primary char is a gnome mage, and I love Steamfont so much I moved my other new (non-gnome)chars there to hunt as well:)

First off - fair warning - two of the NPC guards (our Watchmen) are almost constantly being camped by guard killers. One guard is at the cutoff path to the windmills, the other guard is at the windmills. Do NOT count on these NPCs to be around to help you if you get a bad pull:(

I've heard tales that you can hunt in Ak'Anon itself up until level 4, I did not do that myself and would advise caution to those that do try this. Some folks see all the skellies down by the necro guild and think they've hit a gold mine - but my understanding is that those skels are the pets of the NPC necro guildmasters, and you will be KOS soon if you keep killing their boney buddies:)

I chose to hunt out in the regular newbie areas in Steamfont. I prefer the one to your right as you leave the gates of Ak'Anon. From levs 1-4 you can fight the regular rats, skels, etc. that you've seen in other zones. Be VERY careful not to go over the small hill further to your right as you hunt in this area...or you will run into the Dragon Skeleton, which I'll explain more later.

This is also where you'll discover why I call my homeland Ratfont...this place is crawling with diseased rats in all the level ranges. I'd advise against fighting these if at all possible, they give good xp but their loot is not worth the disease you'll get when they bite you.

There is another newbie area to your left as you leave Ak'Anon, near the druid ring and a small camp of Kobolds. I didn't choose this area for newbie hunting, as it's very hilly and easy to get lost in. There's also the risk that higher level people will train the Kobold camp over you as they flee to Ak'Anon to save themselves.

From level 4 on (or earlier if you're brave or in a good group), you can start hunting the Kobold runts, spiderlings, and runaway clockworks that frequent the newbie areas. Kobolds are unique in that they often drop backpacks, waist pouches and boxes as loot:) so don't bother to buy a lot of luggage from vendors if you're hunting here.

The more adventurous folks might also begin hunting at the small Kobold camp I mentioned earlier. Great xp and nice loot all the way to around lvl 8 or so. However, this place is frequently camped, so if you have a large group you might want to try the larger kobold camp in the zone. That camp is seldom hunted, but the trade off is that the camp is far away from any zone line or guards that could help you. You get in trouble at the large camp, better hope you have time to Gate or run like the wind if you're a tank.

The large camp gave me good xp up until level 10, but other dangers there (besides the kobolds) are the higher level versions of the diseased/plague rats, plus the lesser ebon drakes, the pumas, and the skellies that roam through the tents constantly. There are also the rogue clockworks, the "big brothers" of the runaway clockworks. These metal spiders bite HARD, and I've had to flee them even at lvl 14 when more than one of them jumped me.

Another option besides the large Kobold camp is to hunt by the windmills. The tradeoff for hunting here is that it is more crowded with players than the large Kobold camp. You will also run into the same types of creatures at the windmills as you would at the camp. An added feature (hehe) is that you will occassionally be trained on at the windmills by people fleeing from the Mino Caves hunting area, which is nearby.

Yet another option once you hit level 10 to 12 is the Dragon Skeleton I mentioned earlier. Around and within the Dragon's bones are several hard-hitting skeletons. Occasionally,a mino slaver spawns there as well. I got xp on this spawn point all the way to level 14. It's great in that it's just a quick hop through the newbie area (be nice and announce your trains:) to the zone line and safety in Ak'Anon.

Once you hit lvl 12 (or earlier depending on how much risk you like), head for the Mino Caves area. Here you can find all of the mobs you've come to know and love in Steamfont (except for the pumas) in one happy place:)

You'll meet new critters here too, like the earth elementals and the harpies. This area will keep you busy all the way to level 15. The danger of this place is that inside the Cave itself is the home of Meldrath and the Minos. With the exception of the mino slavers, all the other minos con tombstone red to a level 15. The Mino Lord, Hero, and Meldrath himself are level 30+ easily, so be careful.

Fortunately, the Cave is almost constantly camped by high level players fighting the Minos. However, some of these "highbies" often bite off more than they can chew, and that's when the slaughter of newbie gnomes begins:(

I've stopped counting how many times Meldrath and his mino buddies have killed me in all the chars I've brought up in Steamfont. It's just a fact of life here. Any time you see a mino, CON HIM. Don't assume it's just a slaver. If it's not a slaver, RUN. Don't wait to see if the highbies can handle it - run to Ak'Anon and ask /ooc if the critter is dead before you return.

I'm not sure why this zone is rated up to level 20, I've never found much to hunt here past lvl 15. Perhaps there are higher mobs in the caves themselves, but that area is so heavily camped by highbies you can barely get your foot in there.

If any others know of mobs that could get you to level 20 in Steamfont, post it here! I'd love any excuse not to take my chars away from the gnomish kingdom any earlier than I have to:)

Happy hunting!!!

So while we trembled before the plague dragon's domain, Edril simply lifted his sword to his shoulder, looked back at me, and said "wait here." With a proud determination he marched toward the black cave entrance, a portal to the lower planes if ever there was one. He marched to his death, or so we thought. But when we saw him next in two days time he pulled behind him the head of the evil beast, which left thick trails of a green poison behind it.....The skull of the dragon sits still on the entrance to the gnome's own Fortress Mechanus.

The Trak/Miragul/Eldril/Unnamed-Troll storyline is really great, though it is unforunate that those were beta-only set-ups... They described the gnomish regime coming as a hand-out by the elves who'd always lived on Faydwer. Rather, the history behind the published storyline is that the elves--both wooden and high--lived in the magnificient forestlands of Tunaria. Their greatest marble city was Takish-Hiz which stood now where the Deserts of Ro are (hense all the marble ruins.) When Solusek Ro grew jealous of their majesty, he seiged the forest with heat. The Elven druids battled the onslaught as best they could, but ultimately they had to flee their homelands and they ended up on Faydwer, under the apprehensive wardings of the native shorties. In the meantime, Humans spurted into existance and in time renamed the continent Antonica.
