The Southern Plains of Karana are home to two villages: One for the aviaks and another for the centaurs (the two don't always get along). Here, you'll also find the entrance to the former Splitpaw Lair (a dungeon overrun with hordes of planar elementals). The gnolls that used to inhabit Splitpaw can now be found around the dungeon's entrance, making the area rather dangerous for the low level adventurer.

This is the only place in Norrath where you'll find elephants as well as a very elusive pegasus named Quillmane, highly sought after for its levitation cloak. Cyclopses, undead, and plenty of wandering animals make this an excellent hunting grounds for players from level 15 to 35.

Named in South Karana

I have spent countless hours in this zone with my ranger because I was always interested in how the named cycles worked and I wanted to hunt them all down. Quillmane is the most popular to hunt and I have spawned her about 200 or so times in my years. For Quill, I would recommend stationing your tracker just south of Split Paw and kill any mob that crosses over Paw between the huge pillars. From what I have seen, any mob who crosses over Split Paw is a named PHer of some kind including Quillmane's. It is an easy way to narrow down the 78 sec Quill PHer. More often than not, "an elephant" is a PHer on the Quillmane cycle so I would suggest always keeping those dead. Another common PHer for Quill are "an escaped splitpaw gnolls, and I have seen almost every other roaming mob be a PHer for her at some point aside from regular gnolls. Quillmane is much more common in my opinion than some of the other named, although most of the other named do not drop important loot like Quillmane does. If you are purely after Quillmane and you do not want to wait around south of Split Paw for mobs to cross over it, I would suggest following the formulas provided in some of the posts here such as the one by Greywolf8404, it is very detailed and correct.

Here is a list of roaming named that seem to be the most elusive, from rarest to more common~

1. A gaduladian widemouth - to my knowledge does not exist in South Karana, despite it be listed on the zones mob list.

2. Groi Gutblade - by far the rarest of all the named mobs in SK, He is the only mob that I have not figured out and exact way to get him to pop. The few time I have seen him I kill him and nothing pops up on track even after a few minutes. This may mean is on his own timer and does not have a PHer. He also may fight with mobs in the zone which makes him remain up for a short amount of time. He is the most mysterious in my opinion.

3. Knari Morawk - Very rare, I have noticed all of his PHers are always aviaks.

4. Grizzleknot -Very rare, his PHers always spawn on the east side of the zone along the wall. From beyond the hermit house all the way to almost the north area of the east wall where the two static treants are chillin'. His PHers are usually a lioness or a lion but not limited to. Even when I had his PHer on lockdown, it could still take up to an hour or more to get him.

5. Mroon - pretty rare, I have only seen him about 15 times in 8 years of hanging out in this zone.

6. All of the other named are about the same as far as rareness, Marik Clubthorn (which his cycle is very close in area to Quillmane's cycle so you may get him a lot while hunting for her). Synger Foxfyre, Narra Tanith, Gnashmaw, Gnawfang, and Cracktusk are all about equally as common/rare. As funny as it sounds Quillmane is one of the most common of the named, the most common being Coloth Meadowgreen.

Pops a Quill every 15 minutes

Start with:
1. A ranger with 200 tracking skill (make one yourself or make a friend) with the tracking set to normal
2. Someone high enough level to hang out at split paw and not get owned

Quillmane's place holder follows these rules:
1. Place holder will spawn south of split paw (I found some directly east but not many)
2. Place holder will eventualy pass by and through split paw
3. Has a 60ish second spawn timer (seen it pop at 60 and then at 66 and some at 68. Could be server latency that causes that difference)
4. The Place holder durring my time there was:
a Lion
a Lioness
an Elephant
Escaped Split Paw Knoll
Shadow Wolf

The rub:
1. Take the non-tracker and go to split paw. Murder everything there, gnolls, wanderers, does matter just kill it. (and make some profit too)
2. Draw lines between the aviak village to the hermit, then from the hermit to split paw and from split paw to the aviak village
3. Put the tracker in the middle of the triagle
4. Murder any of the above creatures that may cross your path (I was dual boxing at the time so I just killed stuff at split paw)
5. Wait for Quillmane to spawn

Once Quillmane has spawned:
1. Track him down (duh)
2. Once he is dead start your timing device and have your tracker run back to the middle of the triangle like before
3. In about 60 or so seconds something will pop, you now have Quillmane's PH
4. I am not sure how many place holders you had to kill before it would pop but it was at least 5 or more (because my mercs would be ready to go again)

Now I did notice while I was in South Karana that there were multiple an Elephants. I think the others are for other rare spawns.
Kill one and wait for something to pop at the 60 second mark and chase it down until something interesting spawns.Took about 8 kills to get the cloak.

If you are on the Vox server and need this beast killed, or if you want a demonstration so you can do it on your server look me up.

I want to warn you I am not an expert on Quillmane, spawning or tracking. I am going to give my recent experience in hopes that you will find it helpful during your quest. Because this guy is a real pain to spawn. But once you do spawn him, you will be grinding him I swear. Quillmane takes patience and dedication. I compare it to the Plane of Sky part and to the Fire elementals you hunt in the trap. Just a bad spawn and a bad drop rate of the item you need. However once you pinpoint his exact place holder (PH) then you will be getting him to spawn a very quick and at a relatively easy pace.

Like I said earlier, I am no expert but I have found things to be different from the info I have read through, but PLEASE read through the forums and not just this. I got different bits and pieces from each post I read forming a picture on this guy so it may behoove you to do the same. Also check the dates of the posts/threads because a lot of the information was from 2002-2006 or when the fabled came out.

I want to say good luck to those that want to solo without a tracker (Bard, druid and ranger) (side note why cant a beastlord track? Lol). More power to you. However if you want that quick and easy pace then you will need a tracker. I used a level 55 ranger, no AAs, 200/200 tracking skill. Keep your tracker on NORMAL. It will place newest spawned creatures at the top of the list.

Spawning Quillmane:
I really stink at spawning Quillmane, I based it more on luck, but here is how I got him to spawn. Where to start your killing is between the Aviaks, Splitpaw Gnolls, and the hermits house (building southwest with a cottage inside walls). I suggest pulling as much as you can then nuking with aoe and killing everything within a few seconds. I am not using the timer at this point. I found it to be useless until Quillmane spawned, however do not cut it out, because the creatures do have different spawn timers. It seemed regular mobs would spawn within 32 seconds or had a 4-6 min timer. The NAMED PH mobs will have the same timer as Quillmanes PH. So with your timer counting to 78 secs will guarantee all of the mobs spawned (adjust how you see fit) to the PH. Then you could pull just the 78 second ones to kill. Keep killing like this until Quillmane spawns.
NOTE:
-Kill ROAMING Mobs, not stationary (note newly spawned mobs will be stationary for a short time)
-Leave Named Mobs, ALIVE
-Do not kill mobs that you did not intend to kill, let them beat you up or just run away from them til out of agro distance (you will lose agro).
-Quillmane DOES NOT have ONE SPAWN LOCATION. He has quite a few, but his spawns will be below the splitpaw southern line, but across that whole southern zone.

Finding Quillmane:
After finding the elusive beast don’t kill him right away. It took me like 10-12 kills just for one drop so it will benefit you to follow these steps. (just pull him and let him beat you up, or just leave him alone until your ready to kill, he is NOT a hard fight at all, easy peezy)
1. Kill two or three STATIONARY gnolls at splitpaw, and let them respawn 4 to 6 minute timers. This will be your buffer for all creatures between you and Quillmanes PH.
2. When gnolls respawn they should be at the top of your NORMAL track list, now kill quillmane, if cloak drops great! If not continue…
3. His PH spawn will be exactly like his spawn, all over the southern zone you made from splitpaw. So running around is A GOOD IDEA! And forget everything about only lions, wolves, forget all that NONSENSE. Because I found it to be anything that can roam (DON’T KILL NAMED CREATURES!!!). Centaurs, aviaks, Cyclops, undead Cyclops, wolves, lions, or anything else that spawns at the top of your list, don’t let any stone be unturned.
4. The TIMER!!!!! His timer IS NOT 78 seconds (I said that earlier just to be sure of his PH spawns as you pull and kill). I found Quillmanes PH TIMER to be 40-45 seconds (RARELY BUT HAPPENED WITH A LION AND UNDEAD CYCLOPS) and 62-66 seconds. I could not find any other type of timer with him. Just continue killing the PH until Quillmane spawns, however….
5. I warn that killing Quillmane rapidly seemed to cause the zone to SPAWN NEW creatures to push to the top of the tracker to counter this way of playing. If this happens I would go kill Gnolls again to put at top.
6. And I do believe Quillmane could have two possible timers, but works with either (both don’t have to be dead), I do not have the evidence for this just a feeling from how my experience went. I had a 45 second undead Cyclops spawn then a 62 lion spawn, I ended up killing the lion first then the Cyclops (just to be sure), I felt at that point I could handle two spawns. After I killed both however, only one spawned. So it could mean that Quillmane needs both creatures dead.
NOTE:
- 40-45 second timer (rare) and 62-66 (common)
- Killing quillmane rapidly causes more new mobs for tracker, kill some stationary gnolls as a reference on tracker to cut the bull-corn mobs
- Don’t leave any mob alive that spawned on these timers, no matter if they are a Cyclops or centaur or aviak or wolf or etc. ( to be safe, HOWEVER….)
- HOWEVER, DO NOT KILL ANY NAMED. Even if it spawned on timer, you must had the wrong PH. THIS IS HELPFUL just for one reason that you don’t have to deal with his PH again.
- Do not kill unnecessarily and keep tabs on your normal tracker and timer at this point.
- When I killed quillmane like this there were NO OTHER PLAYERS in the zone, so I was just Killing one mob every minute or so and it was still causing multiple new spawns, like the zone refreshed or restarted or something. I believe SoE does not want us to grind in this way…but ***** them, its already hard as it is lol.

hey, sorry for the late reply for this thread,
a Plains pebble can be used in various old style cultural recipes. generally it's the imbued verson of a plains pebble though. to imbue it seek out just about any priest or caster who worships 'Karana' -- if the priest or caster worship's 'Tunare' they can only imbue Emerald's.

generaly these are used for Wood Elf old cultural smithing. there may be updated uses for both of these items. not sure.

later

I've been reading a great deal of posts about the Zones over the past few months, and about South Karana, BEWARE! The splitpaw gnolls which were very tough in that area have relocated OUTSIDE and are roaming around freely in the zone. For any adventurers that travel the zone be careful because it is not the tame place it used ot be.

Wonderful for my level 33 Paladin. He has been eagerly awaiting to hunt them all down for all of the hurt they have been giving him over his years.

Also, be aware that the splitpaw area is now revamped for levels around 70+ which makes it lethal for the nomal groups that used to hunt there when SK got too low for them in the old EQ days.

As of the date of this posting, this is one of the newer monster missions. You'll need to find a gnollish zealot, who is just east of the bridge by the river on the north side of the zone. Walk through the text trigger words and get the mission; then you will be transported to Splitpaw Lair.

As a level 70 gnoll, you'll get to be either a cleric, enchanter, warrior, or magician. Our group tried a couple of different combinations but finally succeeded with 2 clerics, 2 warriors, 1 enchanter, and 1 mage.

We didn't do anything fancy, but just plucked away at elementals one by one until the mission is done. We saw no respawns during our mission. It'll help to have a group member with a decent knowledge of the zone or at least a map. The two main areas you have to reach are the prison cells and the location of your ultimate target - Farsoth Mal. To find Farsoth Mal, you'll need to cross two bridges, veer left at the fork after the second bridge, and look to the big room on the right. Farsoth Mal is in the center. After taking him down, the chest will spawn in the center along with the gnome who will teleport you out.

Some difficulties we had were bad mob pathing near the first bridge that caused us several wipes and lots of downtime. I wouldn't recommend fighting on this bridge because you'll get adds from below and get wiped. Another difficulty we had was that some people didn't get experience after completing the mission, but after hailing the gnollish zealot back in SK and zoning out to another zone, we got our experience.

Here's what came from the chest:

Outside of Infected Paw is an excellent place for level 32-35 to level. Camp the Gnolls. They are quite plentiful and all con blue at that level. I did 1.5 lvls in about 4 hours solo. Also made a decent amount of pp. (around 150pp) since many of the gnolls drop weapons that are worth 5 or 6 pp.

I've been hunting here since at lest 30 and I've had a hard time leveling. The spires of Spiltpaw are safe and alright EXP. I'm 32 now and I get 1/8 of yellow for a Gnoll killed. The point is its safe and I can solo it easy.I would like to get a yellow bubble each kill but you got to settle some times. The 30's are hard to level in the first place. You will get a pp in some kills and lvl in 3 hours(if no one else is camping one of the other spires) I can't speak for others but its better then most places I've been.

SUNBEAM - This is a VERY overlooked spell but in the right places it can be one of the most valuable not to mention fun.

I you are pulling Gnolls, Aviaks, Orcs, WHATEVER; are/or have a druid over lvl24; and are outside USE THIS SPELL! I notice the tendency to eventually pull upwards of 4 gnolls from the spires and trains of aviaks at a time which can be deadly to most groups. As this is a AoE spell it can get all of those critters charging you if the caster hits the right one and buy valuable melee and cast time.

With 3 of us (all druids: I cast Sunbeam, Dizzy Winds, root, and tanked; they DOT, snare, burn, and drag it in a circle when need be) we have been able to take on up to 8 spire gnolls in 10 minutes (it was a slow night in SK but only 1 person had Kei) and collectively only lost a couple bubs worth of health since half the time the gnolls would just zigzag blindly and very slowly giving us time to med and cast.

Sup fellow Monkies,
Cross the weight limit and you suffer and die. Cant do the spires for the fine steel weaps, too heavy. Unless you need the leather that drops, the Aviaks is your bet. Some very nice loot drops in the Aviak village on the far south side of the zone. If you save the loot, it is even lighter than the pp you can sell it for atop the Aviak tower. Sell back in Queynos on training runs for more coin. I have made over 550pp and 5 lvls solo in this zone.

No centaurs have NO faction nor do the acrue agression like lions and wolves if you go on a rampage and don't zone to clear it out. As a trade off though it almost seems they do have a larger agro range than most other creatures in this zone so make sure you keep your hunt away from the centaur village or you could have a stampede on your hands.

The Infamous Question...

Where to hunt? That's always the question isn't it?

Well in the Southern Karanas one can always find time to stop by and pluck the feathers from the Aviaks. The corner near Lake Rathe zone with the Shadowed Men is always nice, but the bird brained Aviak are indifferent to everyone with the exception of Ogre and Troll. And they have NO faction! So kill as many as you like and they will never change thri view of you as a sweet innocent bystander.

Loot the corpses and then go sell the the loot to thier own merchant, Krak Windchaser, for some nice money. On the subject of money though, there is deent cash loot on many of the Aviak. About 3-5pp at times.

But be warned that Darters can range in level sometimes and are not all what they seem. As are Rooks, a 24 necro could kill a rook easily, but 32 monks are also there to kill rooks as well ... that say something to ya'?

It's all in your preference of what you want more. Loot and low experience or great experience and no loot (example: Pharg Fiends in Paludal Caverns). But Aviaks are that decent experience decent loot category. You level slow, but the loot makes up for it.

Hunting tip
# Jul 30 2002 at 10:49 PM Rating: Decent
I'm I lvl 27 High Elf wizard. Once when I was 25 I tried solo Osargen in HHK and died about 5 times. Back at 24 and with no room in groups in HHK I came to SK. I stayed for a little while and got some great hunting strategys for the south gnoll spire that worked well for me.

The first group I had was three wizzys. One would pull with a weak nuke and the three of us would form a triangle around the gnoll and trade off nukes, the gnoll would keep changing who he was aggroed on and kinda stayed in the middle.

Then we got a druid and he could heal, snare and tank very limited amounts that kept gnolls away from me and the other wizzys.

The next time (and this is my favorite atm) was just me (at 24) and a 23 Wood Elf druid. The druid would pull with snare and I would nuke and then back up, then the druid would cast a nuke and whack untill the gnoll aggroed on him, he backed up fast, then I nuked, and we continued till it died. We were consistently taking out yellows and reds, and the only death was the druid, once, from a mess up overpull.

The fourth I haven't done yet, and can't really for two levels (which odds are I will have gotten by the time anyone reads this post). Kiting. I heard kiting works well here, and I'm not gonna pretend I know how to kite well cuz I've never kited. Two more levels till snare...

If u are a dark race the closest place to bind is in the Arena in the Lake Rathe zone and the entrance is surrounded by a bunch of aviaks, who hate trolls and ogres. (how convienient) Anyways, I am level 22 and the aviaks at the entrance are all blue and green so they will rarely attack me when I am armed. However, if you die while fighting in SK or something, when u spawn back to the arena the aviaks will sense your vulnerablity being nekked and attack in full force. Being a wariior, I usually get my **** kicked by 5 greens and a blue trying to do a CR. It doesnt help since my H2H is about 3.

Sorry to rant and rave for so long but just a word of advice for fellow trolls and ogres who want to build up in SK.
The Problem with Arena Binding for Evils

One problem I am running into (and it is a major one) concerning being bound in The Arena is that if you're on a CR you will have to get past the Aviak Guards naked. More than one of my corpses have been left on the shore right before zone in, due to finally being worn down right before I made it to zone.

Dark blue chickens can be a SERIOUS problem for a naked evil race, my troll generally has to /ooc and ask for someone to come kill the Guards if my group doesn't know where The Arena is or I am soloing.

The Arena is close, but its certainly not convenient unless the Aviak Guards are green to you, and even then they might still agro. Green Egrets in South Karana still chase after my troll.
