The eastern plains of Karana are sandwiched by mountains and water. Travelers should be wary of the named cyclopses, wandering evil eyes, and steep, narrow mountain paths approaching Highpass Hold. Don't step off the ledge !

I guess a new npc in this zone or a really old one. Either way i couldn't find anything on this site about him. When i killed him he dropped 1gp, 1sp, and 4cp. No items. Coned grey to a lvl 98 ranger. Faction standing with Mucktail Gnolls got worse. Factions standing with Highpass Guards, Karana Residents and Karana Bandits got better. Approximate location was Negative 1051 Negative 2227.

Does anyone know what spawns the Hill Giants in E. Karana? I,ve heard something about the Rouge Lions being there placeholders. Any truth to those rumors?
Halloween Mobs
# Mar 12 2003 at 12:42 AM Rating: Decent
I remember back in 2000 on Halloween, there were a slew of new mobs in this zone, and the sky went red, but the coolest of all was there was an Eerie howling noise on the wind, that was REALLLY creepy, and lasted a week until the event ended.

It revolved around Kevagon the Dreadful, a named Spectre who lived at the far end of the Chasm/gorge/valley thing that leads to highpass.

All the mobs in the zone turned into undeads...

there were (in order from easiest to hardest)
-Graveyard Pawns
-Graveyard Knights
-Graveyard Wraiths

and I think i remember an assortment of Death spiders or something.. and some other types of bugs... (plague scarabs or something)

Keep in mind this was around the time of the Plague of the Karanas, back in the day (a cool year long event) where the skies in the KAranas went green every so often, and giant green firebeetles called plague beetles roamed the zone, and the Swarmqueen, and the Plague Scarab Brood-Mother were the super rare spawns, who dropped some nice rare things, like Blue-Diamonds, Black sapphires, etc. and some others probably for quests.

It was also rumored that on one of the days of the PLague, Mithaniel Marr himself walked the plains in a huge event and mopped up some big *** plague beasts... rumor though.. *sigh*

Anyhow, for all you newbies out there who just joined up with EQ, you missed the BEST Halloween event EVER! (this was accompanied by the West Commons Werewolf event, and the Qeynos hills undead event.)

All in all it was fun for all!!!

(the Ek bridge also turned into a mass-grave!)

There were tons of sweet drops at the halloween events, but all of them were single class only, No drop items. My Paladin picked up a no drop paladin only shield called 'The Watcher', and a no drop crown called 'Crown of the Holy Defender' off the werewolf Overlord (main mob in WC).. there equipment drops for almost every slot for every class!! Even swords for rangers! (though I didnt get one.. =( )

If you want to check out some of the neat nodrop pally stuff I picked up, look up Angelyna on 7th Hammer! (not to be confused with Angeylyna the cleric, we were old friends)

/end rant

# Mar 12 2003 at 12:33 AM Rating: Decent
Saw an interesting mob here before, was in the same spot at the crossroads that the "!" (exclamation mark) mob spawns sometimes...

He looks exactly like a human male, is level one, with less than 5hp, and his name was
"!dawnbane serpants"

Im not joking, it was 'serpants' not 'serpents', and there was an "!" in front of it.. (aside from the odd reason it would be plural, for one mob... even though its spelled wrong anyways)??

There is something really messed with the "!" mob bug in this zone!!!!

For anybody that is lvl 13, I recommend either War Wolves, and for those of you who have Cure Poison or can avoid it all together, try Carrion Spiders and Chasm Crawlers.
Fang
# Nov 05 2001 at 8:56 PM Rating: Decent
Same thing happened to my shaman, I was running from some war wolves(I could kill them but it would take too long and they were very green, and have no loot) when I happened to come across them. I conned and they were all indifferent. I ran past them when Fang decided he would attack me, and he did, and I died. So I was sort of confused. Why did the indiff wolf attack me? Then I was like DUH! There were wolves agrod on me and the little wolf didn't like it. As you said your shaman friend was being chased by wolves. So there is your answer, in a long drawn out fashion ;)

Today I traveled from Highpass Hold to Runnyeye then Gorge of King Xorbb and will go East Plane of Karana and return to Highpass Hold. However, when I zoned out from Gorge of King Xorbb I saw a message with unkown place.

You have entered The Graveyard of Dead.

Then I saw much of unknown terrible monsters.
RE: Name changed?
# Jul 23 2002 at 8:52 AM Rating: Decent
You probably have been told this by now, but that message you saw was the Halloween week event that took place last year in EK, WC, Everfrost, Qeynos Hills and Rathe Mtns. Everything in the zone despawned and loads of undead came out, most having a random piece of No Drop, class specific armor on them.

Fang the Deadly
# Oct 10 2001 at 1:51 PM Rating: Default
My buddy and I were traveling back to qeynos from freeport the old fashioned way...(hoofing it) when we were attacked by several upper blue wolf creatures (we were about 16th level at the time) He is a shaman and we were both sowed so we thought "bookity bookity" to the zone. It was dark and we got split up and 4 of the creatures chased him and 1 chased me (I must not look that good to eat...) We were both okay heading toward the zone when BOOM my partner was losing bars of life FAST. He was killed and I zoned. When asked what happened he said something named fang whooped him in a fast way.

Thus said i went to search for his corpse while he made his way back to me. As a ranger I used track to find Fang and hopefully my pals carcass. Fang was fire truck red, so I used camo to get kinda near him hoping he would not see me. He was within a few feet of my buddy standing with a halfing and human NPC. I stood curious until some fool ran by him naked as a jaybird (I thought he was a fool anyway) Fang, quite well manned did not eat this guy and thus I de-camoed. He was indifferent to me. I drug my pals stiffening corpse to the bridge in time for him to show up.

Why did fang attack? Does he only get hungry at night? Hmm...

What to Hunt
# Aug 06 2001 at 10:34 AM Rating: Decent
Very underutilized hunting spot in this zone for mid to high teens is the hill south of the bridge - the one with the obelisk on top. This is where the Gnoll Reavers and War Wolves spawn. Loot is not great but the experience is. Spawn rate is fast. At night the MOBs change to Undead Reavers and Spirit Wolves which are a little tougher but not outside of a mid to high teens group ability. Make sure you have a good healer or two with you. The wolves hit hard and the Reavers can bash.

I'm an high elf enchanter at level eight. If I get a port and go invisible, can I get to HHK safely?
RE: Safe when Invis
# Jun 08 2001 at 11:15 AM Rating: Decent
Yes you can, nothing will see you but you must be careful to keep invis'ed. Otherwise the mobs here would have a crunchy chanter sandwich for lunch.

It's too late to help that original chanter who asked, but remember that there are undead in this zone at night, and they see invis. Unfortunately there are also other types of mobs here at night who see through ITU, so for greatest safety travel invis during the day.

I've safely taken several low-level (single-digit) characters through here, so it's definitely possible. I've had more trouble with Gnolls and Orcs in Highpass than with this zone.

At level 19 Wizard, N. Karana is starting to turn green(aside from the HG and Griffene/fon/feather which are red). Looks like E. Karana is a great progression when I turn 20. I'll check all these tips out and I hope I can solo my way here since this is one of the hardest places to find a group. I can never see more than 20 people here at one time. Most of the time it's between 10 to 15 people. Most of them powerleveling so you won't group with them.
Helpful Hint
# Mar 11 2001 at 10:35 AM Rating: Default
Well, i just leveled twice just in the NW area of the zone hunting gorge hounds and dark stalkers. The best advice i can give is that this is one of those perfect places to use your change view. After getting jumped by griffawns and hounds a few times i tried this method.. and never got jumped again. Drag your view out relatively far each battle and watch for anything coming your way, and move your fight out of the way. It might be a bit of a bother but it is very much worth it, and the lack of hills makes it work even better.

I took a major faction hit from killing something (Miller's maybe) and Im now KOS to the guards, the Squire and Sir Morgan. What do I need to do to get my faction above KOS?
RE: Faction with Guards
# May 18 2001 at 8:37 AM Rating: Default
Ithink they are all Karana resident faction. Kill bandits or the mucktail gnolls at the bottom of the ramp. I am a dark elf and I think about 10 gnolls and 30 bandits fixed my problems. Even Sir Morgon is only dubious now. You will need to do a lot more to trade with them.
Soloing
# Dec 04 2000 at 4:01 AM Rating: Decent
I have been in this zone for nearly a week now. This is a great place for those of us who do not have several hours at a time to play. I can easily run out from the bridge until I find something "blue", pull it back to the bridge and either kill it, or safely zone. No harm done this way, and I have something to do when I have a few spare moments to kill.
RE: Soloing
# Feb 27 2001 at 12:25 AM Rating: Decent
I just spent my first day here and have to agree. The area around the Beholder Maze entrance has proven to be a good spot to solo as a 14th level druid. Carrion spiders con blue (and give 2 silks each for us tailors! Much better than the slim pickings in Misty Thicket)and so do the chasm crawlers. So far there have been enough of these to keep me busy and to avoid the temptation to try a yellow gorge hound or red crag spider. The safety of the zone is a bit far away and I doubt you would make it safely without having SOW.

Good hunting!

EK is a very good place to hunt for both melee and casters. Careful with the spiders they are social. Gorge Hounds will agro easily if you're to close, nasty in the middle of a fight. Watch out for the Cyclops, there are three incarnations of that rare spawn. Higher Levels like to try him, but then find out he's too much and train him to the Wooden Bridge. This spot is excellent for casters at this level too. Lots of room for kiters to work (If they're carful). Wizards are fun to root and nuke. Decent variety of different Level Creatures. Snakes, gorge Hounds, Carrion Spiders being the most common. The there are Griffawnes, and Crag Spiders. Another good spot is not to far to the right of the Bridge on a hill. This is where a lot of reavers spawn. Very Social, so I'd recommend a group here. At night time they start spawning undead reavers which are at a higher level. If you get a good group of mid-level casters (26-34) the druids are great exp and loot as long as you don't mind the faction hit.

Broon the Cyclops

26 posts
Broon the Cyclops is a low 20s Cyclops that is great exp for high teen groups.
He is usually playing in the water to the left of the wood bridge from NK. Get him to aggro you, then pull him to your group, who should be waiting in ambush at the base of the ramp to HH.
Make sure to announce that you are pulling him to the ramp, in ooc or shout, there are 3 reasons for doing this
#1 Killing Broon spawns Choon and Proon, two way higher level Clops, they dont wander much, but some people like to know they are out.
#2 If you are a 50 Wiz wandering a zone, and you see an 18 Bard runing from a Cyclops, you generally do the nice thing and Nuke the Clops. This would be counterproductive to your desire to attain those precious orange bubbles. If they know what you are doing, maybe, just maby, they wont steal the kill from you.
#3 Some people really get suprized when a Cyclops thunders through their camp and slays them. Some people get upset even ;o) You are pullign this guy CLEAR across the zone, pretty close to one of the higher traveld highways in the game. Give people in the way a heads up, youll make more friends then enemies that way.

Anyway, once you pulled and killed him, pull your group left of the ramp and wait. Broon spawns every 6 minutes or so right down the canyon from you. He will walk right to you.
The timing is just right for the casters to med, and maybe for the tanks to pull a crag or griffawn to while away that spawn time.
If a party is blanced and smart, high teens/low twenties can rack up huge amounts of EXP here in a steady stream.
Be warned, Broon hits HARD, and his loot really sucks.
But it is cool as hell killing a Cyclops before you have a Surname ;o)
Gnoll reavers
# Aug 25 2000 at 12:26 PM Rating: Good
26 posts
From the Wood bridge (NK Zone) follow the shore to the right. There will be a big hill on the left with a funky forked obelisk on it. This is REAVER HILL.
Reavers are low teens, and spawn in the day, loot is OK, ringmail, pages, and occasional stones.
At Night, the Undead Reavers come out. They are high teens, and great Exp. Not to hard of a kill for a decent group.
The best thing about reaver hill is that the spawns are plentiful. Soloing is possible, but a small group can kill non stop if they are balanced enough and can keep up the pace. Larger or higher level groups can actually camp the obelisk itself and be right at the center of Gnoll heaven, or hell, epending on your species and the quality of your group ;o)
Most people wander the hill till they find a gnoll (It doesnt take long) and pull them the the shore.
Reaver hill is a nice break from camping Aviaks or Highpass, and if you are lucky, you just might be able to get a Broon group going (More on that in next post)

Concise and informative post, needs one caveat:

Also on Reaver Hill spawn two additional MOB's--"a war wolf" and "a spirit stalker," the latter of which is nocturnal. The war wolves are naturally agressive, while the spirit stalkers are naturally indifferent. Both of them, however, *will* aggro into battles with reavers (undead or live), so be careful of lupine daisy-chains and keep your fights out of their wandering range (slightly past the portion of the road that curves around the base of the hill).
RE: Lupine daisy-chains
# Mar 18 2001 at 4:03 PM Rating: Decent
Reaver hill is a good spot. The XP for the gnoll reavers adn undead reavers adds up fast even if the loot isn't great. The best I saw was one bronze weapon and a lot of minor junk. Could have been luck of the draw that night though.

Grouped without out any real tanks, we managed to do well. with harmony a solo run sounds possible and that is the next plan. Will advise if it winds up being a bad one.
