BlackBurrow is the home of the Sabertooth Clan gnolls, a group not particularly fond of outside visitors. It connects to both the Everfrost Peaks and Qeynos Hills.

Be advised that the dense gnoll population combined with their habit of running deeper into the stronghold for help can make for some pretty impressive trains.

Derailment Squad

You can make friends and get faction quickly by joining the train derailment squad. The two best places for this are by the QH zone and in the room at the bottom of the long ramp. If there's a squad in the ramp room, you're not going to see much action at the zone.

The best time to join the derailment squad is when a group that's too low for the green room tries to camp it. They'll bring out a nice-sized train for folks in their mid-to-upper teens to derail. This is good exp and you can help save folks lives.

First, try to help the trainer(s). Heals and damage shields are usually appreciated by the time they're running for their lives. Be more careful with the heals... you'll likely pull off some that haven't been hit yet, and the person running may just be pulling. If the person's going to die, they probably won't be too upset with a heal. ;-) If the train is small, they may be able to turn and fight. If they ask for help, be ready to take extras off them or help with one that's way red for them.

The most important thing to remember as part of the derailment squad is not to inadvertently kill steal. If someone hangs around to fight and you're healing, buffing, or damage-shielding them, settle for the faction and not the kill. People don't usually pull up the long ramp, but they may try pulling to the bottom, so be careful.

One last piece of advice: Sometimes there are just too many gnolls for the number of folks derailing. Don't be afraid to yell "Train to zone!" if you get in trouble and need to bail out. After all, it's a smaller train now than before. :-)

ok well it can be very frustrating to die by train a lot, which ive done. and in doing so, i thought "gee. i wonder if theres a way to avoid dying every time and elite train runs by you." well, sometimes some of the gnolls will give up chase and turn to you. that is not good, when you are level 8 and hunting gnolls downstairs. well, i believe that if there one of those HUGE elite trains bringing half of blackburrow up, you need to "ride the train." by "ride the train" i mean go up with the guy whos being chased, or even better, if they announce the elite train beforehand. you should probably go on up and zone, unless you can handle that train. why, you may ask? well, what happens, and believe me ive seen it, is the person will get up top and zone their bleeding butt. now, those elites and commanders and such will stand around where they zoned and wait a few seconds. then they'll say " well, breaks over. time to go back down and elitely guard or regularly guard, or command, etc." well 1 by 1 they mosey on down and if youre one of those level 8s hunting gnolls who "wisely" just got out of the way of the chasee and let him and the train pass, you're in trouble, my friend. they are gonna come on down, being all elite and stuff, see you and that they can kill you before you can cry "TRAIN TO ZONE!" will attack you. well, you may be level 13 and sayin, (since they usually come down one by one) " ahhh a puny elite. hah! i laugh in your face!" and you engage battle with it. well 10 seconds later another one elitely moseys on down so he can resume guarding something (have you ever thought who they're guarding?) and see their elite friend gettin awhooped. and they help. and another comes down and the same thing happens and you're /ying and theyre a-guarding, and you're a-runnin, and they're a-chasin, and you're a-crackin your knuckles (or at least i am), and they're a-knockin you unconsious, and you're a-bleeding to death, and they're a-sayin something stupid about blackburrow's glory and **** like that, and pain and sufferin are a-tryin to strike you but miraculously missin(so at least you dont feel it haha!), and you, my friend are a-dyin. now all that could be avoided by "ridin the train."

i like to start low lev trains by standing above the pit by the zone with a decent group and cast a snare on the patroling gnoll down below on the bridge. he then runs through the bb gathering all his friends that arnt in a privite room(ie the elites and commanders)and they all come running to the top of the bb right to us bringing guardsman and down. its a lot of fun when you have enough people there to make a mess of the gnolls thats usually around me and 10 of my friends that are about 9th to 13th lev. after about 10 min of fighting half of the bb has been gutted then the eleits are easy picking

so if you see someone on the edge of the pit casting a spell be ready for fun

When I group my level 7 Monk with others around level seven or so, we usually camp right below the bridge, waiting for the trains, and there are obviously many other people passing through. I usually invite another group or two to camp the same area, and we can all usually take whatever train comes through, even if they have elites. This also helps you cause you can exchange drops. I think the way to take of the trains is to not be to exclusive about your camp spot. If someone else wants to stay there, fine, another person to save you when you're dying.

At level 7 I dont care how many of you there are you will never bust up an elite train. And if there is enough of you to do so there is no chance your getting any xp hunting with all the competition in the same place. An elite train if coming from the elite room will typically have 4 elites and pick up a guard or 2 along the way, now tell me what group around 7th level or even 2 could come close to busting this train. I am a lvl 20 warrior and I get outta dodge when one of these trains come through

Giant Militia Longsword while casting flame lick and snare and wearing skin like wood and i die as often as anyone if caught in a bad place by an Elite train, even with 3 or 4 equal lvl and equipped friends, so dont post any more baloney about your lvl 7 or 8 characters beating up on this Elite and that Commander and busting up trains, thats malarky.

Works great.. in theory.

In practice, all's terrific until you stumble into a few of the PREVIOUS train wandering back to their posts... and then it's like two Amtrak's on the same rail, with you in the middle. "THAT'S gonna leave a mark..."

Better to follow the caboose and strip them off one by one while they run after someone else...

This is a bad place to go linkdead in. I went LD right near the entrance, and when I logged back in I was in the bowels. Needless to say I died, and my corpse is irretrieveable. So if your computer is in serious need of an upgrade and you go Ld all the time, enter at your own risk.

I am a level 5 and found out a great lesson, I have a new body and people have been extremely generous in helping me, but, I miss the one and only me that I died and died and died to get.

Please help.

I have a great strat for shaman of the 13th lvl to get good loot and awesome exp soloing. go up to snake ledge and into the spike pit room. go to the left near the elite room there are several guardsman around the area. There are only 2 risks involved hehe which is not bad for this place. 1) trains from elite room, and 2) haveing a guardsman run down the stairs and pulling another with low life. It doesnt really matter because there is ALWAYS a high lvl at the elite room to save your butt (on The Rathe anyway) have fun and good luck and good hunting

I fell in that tree trap once. Once. It has a gnoll pup guarding it. I got out, thankfully, but it was a tedious, nail-biting thing. The tree trap is near the exit, though, and easily avoided if someone points it out to you or if you just happen to realize that the hollow stump is bad.

Quick Escape
# Aug 23 2000 at 3:44 PM Rating: Decent
A good, quick escape from the snake pit, elite room, or commander room. Almost guaranteed to save yer butt.

Directly across from the commander room is a short passage way that ends in a door. Run through this door, and you're on a bridge that goes above the big pool. Jump off the bridge into the water. Swim over the the passageway and follow the wall to your right. You'll quickly come to the ramp heading upward. Run up and zone. The gnolls will not jump down after you, but will have to go the long way around, giving you plenty of time to get to safety.

Yes, but no newbie should be that deep into BB! <G>

interestingly, though - once I created a level 1 druid to check out BB. I jumped down the tree trap and walked all the way out without a single gnoll aggroing on me.

The reason they didn't touch you is that they don't hate you. Each time you kill a gnoll anywhere they hate you a little more. I have a lvl 9 Warrior barb and its alot of gnolls to 9 so THEY HATE ME. I am the train man.

Here's an interesting thought: what happens if you HEAL the knolls instead of kill them? Do they start to LIKE you? Work your way up to 9 or so beating on bears and skels and such, and be bloody Mother Theresa to the knolls... wonder if you'd be able to walk down to BB level 3 and do some serious trading with the brewers?
RE: Quick Escape
# Aug 23 2000 at 10:22 PM Rating: Good
After you jump off the bridge, make sure to shout "train to zone". The gnolls will go the long way and pull half of Blackburrow after you. For this reason, this escape strategy should be used sparingly.
#Anonymous, Posted: Aug 24 2000 at 11:56 AM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) Does the shout, "train to zone" actually MAKE the gnolls train? What does make them train? Lately, there've been some killer trains-!
All aboard the Gnoll express
# Aug 24 2000 at 5:24 PM Rating: Decent
The shout "train to Zone" is used as a warning to the other players that you have a number of MOB's on your heels, it is a curtisy call.

The only way to make gnolls 'train' is to let a runner (on that turns and runs) get away. Some times he will let the other gnolls know that you were laying some hurting on him, then they rush off to find and kill you.

Elite Room
# Aug 23 2000 at 2:22 PM Rating: Excellent
Notes on the Elite Room

You should only be in this room if you're lvl 10 or 11+

Make sure you are grouped with at least 3 other people (4 people 11-14 is enough to hold the room)

Another note, make sure at least 1 of your party members can root or snare (this is usually no problem since many of the classes get root or snare or some form of it (EX: Mages can't root, but they get pets who can, or Necros don't get root til a high lvl, but they get Clinging Darkness at lvl 4 which works like a snare and DoT combined.)
Make sure they have root/snare memorized so they can keep any elites or commanders or shamans from running out of the room.
If any gnolls DO escape, be prepared for a train of many more gnolls (wizards or enchanters are very helpful here with either AoE spells [column of frost for wizards, Color flux for Enchanters] or the Enchanters Mesmerize spell.

Try and break the spawn so that you don't have them spawn all at once, just for safety.

I would suggest a party like this:
11-13 Warrior, Paladin, Shadowknight, or Ranger
This person is the main tank, and should be taking the most damage from the elites. If an elite somehow aggros on a caster or healer, get it off them ASAP.

12+ Wizard, Necromancer, or Magician
This person will do the nuking. Necros and Mages should make their pet guard here so they won't get lost if an elite happens to run away. Wizards and mages should med until tanks do a sufficient amount of damage before blasting away with Shock of Ice or Fire Bolt (or Shock of Blades or Flame Bolt) to keep the enemy from turning to you early in the battle. Necros should use their strongest DoT first, then med for a bit, then use Clinging Darkness.

12-14 Cleric, Druid, or Shaman
Clerics should med until tank gets to 60% life and then heal. Druids should cast Stinging Swarm (at lvl 14)early in the battle, and just blast away with Ignite. Shamans should poison early, and use Spirit Strike afterward(at lvl 14). When/if you get out of mana, either med, or start helping the tank and fight.

11-13 Bard, Rogue, or Monk
This person is the alternate tank. Bards should use a song according to the party's needs (near death use heal or speed, half way use heal or buff, full health use buff or attack). Rogues should be behind the enemy at all times using Backstab. This will make the enemy turn to you easily, so what I would do is to stop attacking, hide, and hopefully the enemy should turn away, and then you can start attacking again. Monks should just be doing extra damage with their attacks.

Well, that's all the info I have for now. Hope I didn't make it too long, =P

RE: Elite Room Clearing Method
# Nov 24 2000 at 1:06 PM Rating: Default
Way back when...I was in a group of 5 or so, lvl 11 ish types we camped this room succesfully for a couple of hours and I learned a few techniques that I thought I would share with you all.
We learned that if the root/snare caster was not high level enough that the commander would resist that spell, and when he ran and got ALL of his friends...it was a bad thing...
Twenty minuets later after we had all regrouped, recovered bodies and memed spells we pondered what to about that pesky commander, and what to do when the room spawns full and there is no way we can take them all.
I remebered the saying "run away and live to fight another day" and expanded on that. I decieded to cause a carefully crafted train to get rid of the commander or the too large of a mob in the room. As long as you make sure every one is clear and away from the path of the train, and some one announces to the zone that you and a whole mess of gnolls are on the way up, it all works wonderfully.
The gnolls don't wander back to the room, I think they de-spawn or get killed somewhere else. In the end only one person zones, the group is intact and in controll of a freshly cleared out room that they can now camp safely.

Best of Luck, and always have your train whistle on hand.
CHOOO CHOOO Trian coming through, run for your lives...:)

Look me up if your ever in BB on Vessham

The gnolls always go back to the room but not directly, they will kill anything on the way up and down so this is a terrible strategy. It works ok on the way up when you shout train. Everyone who thinks they avoid the traini s happy until they get smoked on the way down. There is no such thing as a de-spawn. IF your not strong enough to take the room, don't camp it and wait for others to join the group. This method gets others killed

For those going to do a quest that requires the always sought after Blackborrow Cask, be prepared to camp. These are a rare drop from Gnoll Brewers and Gnoll Masterbrewers. They spawn by the bottom of the ramp from the 2 bridge intersection. The placeholder is a Gnoll Guardsman. There is a large rock at the bottom of the ramp right next to the spawn point that you can sit on and watch the spawn point.

There's also a rare spawn site under the elite ledge by the casks. I've only seen a brewer spawn there once, though I'd heard that they sometimes did. The main spawn is the one mentioned by the water on the other side.

If you're trying for casks, make sure you have an open inventory slot, as it counts as a container and won't go in a backpack, etc.

The quests I know of for the cask include the (Surefall) Jagged Pine Cloak which requires 3 casks (ranger & druid), and the rogue redemption quest (which requires a lot of other things as well).

Camping for a cask is slow, thankless work. Your best experience is probably to catch the site uncamped and kill a brewer when wandering by (you know where to go if one comes up on tracking).

My ranger got a Cloak of the Jagged Pine, but I passed on it for my druid... it's just not that nice a cloak to spend weeks getting little exp., and is probably the worst place in BB for kill steals (some folks want the cask bad enough to resort to that). Also, you can get a nicer cloak for less than what someone will want paid buying three casks.

This is something most people who have been in BB before should already know so this is for the "BB newbies".

When you enter the zone from the Qeynos Hills zone one of the first things you'll see is a big tree with an entrance.

DO NOT ENTER IT!!! You'll fall down a trap and end up in a very dangerous place which is likely to get you killed. If you die there you'll also have a hell of a time getting your body back unless someone high level is prepared to drag it out for you.

Yes, newbies should be very careful of this tree, so casualy guarded by a Gnoll pup... and drops you behind 2 of the more difficult areas to get thru in this dungeon.

As a low level character, my ranger jumped in, and it took about 6-7 tries to finnaly get all the way out with an intact body. Lucky, I was under lvl 5 when this happened.

The only good point is on the way out I grabbed everything that wasn't nailed down, and ended up with some decent loot....

Once you get down the ramp head right over the bridge. When you get to the water head left. Once there is no more ground left you'll see one of the guards to the right.

BE WARNED!!! though you can only see 1 of the guards the second one is most likely there!!! He's hidden in a nis in the rocks.

I suggest doing this in a group of two. If you can get someone to break the spawn (maybe a friend can help you) they should be solo-able. This is also one of the place where a patrolling gnoll will come by so be carefull where you sit.

Another good area for fighting gnoll guards (solo or in a group of two{lv 11-12}) to gain quality exp is just up from the snake ledge at the door to the spike pit. You will run into one guard by the door and another one a little ways down the hallway. A patrolling gnoll will come through the door from time to time. I used to pull one of the gnolls half way down the hallway towards the snake ledge and finish him off their and then go pull the other one to the same place and finish him off. You can also take out a snake or two and sell the fangs and poison sacks for 5gp each. Exp is good but the loot is only fair.

Disagree with a couple things. At the level a person who hunts gnoll guards will be, gnoll guards are rich, they will drop fangs for more xp, collars that can be sold for 9 gold and usually have some cloth armour or the occasional bow. You will come away from here with a couple pp from every hunt. Second pulling to the spike pit is ok but you better be sure to not let the gnoll run. They run very early before death through a door only rogues can pick, on the other side is another guard and if they run back to you they will train one more guard and you will be in serious trouble

A single elite guard spawn.
lvl 13-15

Once you get down the ramp head right across the bridge. Go right under the bridge. Once you get to the water go right. Go through one of the two corridors (they both end up in the same room). In this room there'll be 2 gnolls and 1 burly gnoll.

If you go through the door you see, you'll get to the room with the single elite and 3 gnolls.

Before you start attacking the elite be sure to TAKE OUT THE BURLY GNOLL!!! If you don't he'll agro on you as you chase the elite down when he starts to run. The other gnolls shouldn't be a problem and won't agro unless you're really low on health.

Once you've taken out the elite once again be carefull where you sit. There is a patrolling gnoll which comes through the room and will agro on you if you're sitting down.

This is also a spawn-point for a gnoll commander, refugee splitpaw and gnoll shaman. The shaman shouldn't be a problem, but watch out for the commander and refugee.

Sorry Drazi, but I dont like your idea there.
Why not just do the Elite Ledge, its 2 elites but once the spawn is broken, its only 1 at a time.
Far less to deal with. Elites are good exp and good loot. BB Gnoll pelts and skins, Studded and spiked collars, fangs, bronze weapons, and decent coin usually gold or high end amount of silver. It may look like alot of gnolls on the 2 bridges, but at the level(s) that you are taking elites, the lesser gnolls tend not to attack you.

a solo-able gnoll guardsman
lvl 9-12

Once you get down the ramp head to the right across the bridge. Go down towards the water. To the left is a single gnoll guardsman spawn.

I wouldn't suggest solo-ing it at 9 unless you know what you are doing.

The spawn is every approx. 18 mins.

Be warned that it is also the spawn point of the gnoll brewer and the gnoll master brewer. The brewer is about the same lvl as the guard. The master however is much higher.

a place for hunting a two-spawn of elites.
lvl 13-15

Once you go down the ramp head straight ahead over the bridge to the small "island" from there take the other bridge to the ledge.

I suggest camping this with 2 people (as two elites bashing on you can be a bit much) unless you can get someone to break the spawn for you. (maybe get a friend to help you break the spawn)

You get some pretty decent loot from the elites such as spiked and studded collars (good low-end armour with +STR/STA) and BB gnoll pelts and skins (quest items)

Happy hunting,

There is another spot for good snake hunting. Also level 9 - 12.

Once you go down the ramp and over the bridge you see a pool with a big pillar in the middle. On the opposite side of the pool there is a door. Go through the door and follow the corridor. Once you get to the top you'll see the snakes around. The snakes are the same as on snake ledge, drop the same loot and will also not agro each other.

Opposed to snake ledge this area does have trains. However as long as the train-puller keeps running there'll be nothing to worry about. I would suggest standing a bit out of the way if someone shout 'TRAIN!!!' and keep an eye out for the return of the train.

Another thing to watch out for is sitting down here, as patrolling gnolls will be coming by and they agro on anything sitting down. I would suggest sitting down on the far end of the room. Well away from the entrance.

If you're lvl 9-12 DO NOT go to the level above where the snakes are. This is where the commander room is and you're likely to be slaughtered by a couple of gnoll commanders and elite guards.

Have fun and happy hunting,

Snake Ledge

The Giant Snake Ledge in Blackburrow if probaly one of the best places (in my opinion) to get from level 9-12.

You have may have heard that the word TRAIN! originated in Blackburrow. Well it probaly did, but this certain spot is nestled in a spot where you can hunt away from gnolls (to some extent) and gain good exp and money along the way.

To get to the ledge you need to take the normal tunnel down to the landing, cross the bridge on your right and follow the water along the left. You should come to a small waterfall, above the waterfall there is a little pond type thing with a tree in the middle, pass this tree on the left and fall into the water. After you jump into the water turn around and swim under the waterfall to the ladder. Climb up that ladder and you've reached the giant snake ledge.

There are four snakes that spawn right here. They won't help each other out in a fight so it's pretty safe. If you walk up a little bit there is a door on the left which is gaurded by a gnoll gaurdsman occasionally. If you can get past him and through the door you have reached the spike room. There are two spawns of snakes in this room but the danger level is increased dramatically. I suggest sticking the ledge. The ledge is safer because people rarely bring trains down that area.

The snakes are good exp and they also drop some items which can be sold for descent cash. Have fun and be safe :)

Loot tip-- snake eggs are worthless, but keep 'em to eat. it saves a lot of time zoning back into Qeynos for more rations
save teeth and venom sacks. both are worth about 4 gp, 6 sp. venom sacks are better, though, because they stack and are much lighter. also, you seriously can make a couple lvls off snakes, as long as it isn't camped. u can probably share the camp, thouh, since 4 spawn and u'll need some downtime to heal/med.

Oh yeah, and does anyone know why the snakes keep running away nowdays? They never used to flee before...

Newayz, good luck, and happy hunting!

The snakes will flee pretty much everytime now, and go upstairs. However, they will come back down soon afterwards to whereever you are...so don't go chasing them up there if you don't feel like fighting a Gnoll Guardsman.
