The Qeynos Hills connect the city of Qeynos to Surefall Glade and the Plains of Karana.
There is also an entrance to Blackburrow, dungeon of the Sabertooth Gnolls.

With low level wandering animals, undead and gnolls, and protection from wandering Qeynos guards and residents, this area is fairly tame. Two popular finds here are the Fishbone Earring and Glowing Black Stone.

Then at 8 or 9 go to BB ina group cause its tuff.

I would recommend the rabid wolves and the rabid grizzlies (when you give the pelts to Priestess Caulria she gives 1-2 pp for grizzly pelts but doesn't cure your disease - if you give her a rabid wolf pelt she will cure the disease as well).

At your level you are also ready to try Everfrost (run through Blackburrow and out the other side).
You can solo there (if you stay near the guards) by killing orc troopers and snow leopards. Find a friend and you can take down wooly mammoth calves.

Good hunting!

I supervised this all from afar. however, while they were running back from queynos to get their bodies, I looted torvax and his pet. torvax didnt have anything but a rusty dagger, but his pet had 20 PLATINUM on its corpse. I was just wondering if that was a fluke or not...20 plat seems to be an awful lot for a level 7 MoB.

My druid had this happen to him as well -- I often got 10-20p worth of coin (usually silver, MAN that was heavy) off of the pet. However, all of my other characters (shammy, pally, and chanter) get nothing from it, not even bone chips. Maybe it's ANOTHER thing Verant does to bless the druids of the world. *shrug* Happy hunting!

Some high level Characters like to get rid of the copper and silver coins (it seems they have already enough PP :) ) and usually they drop it, but they give it also to some NPCs. Puntar Sandfisher in NRo is as well loaded with lots of coins.
When you are lucky enough, someone else gave money to the NPC you kill and you will be able to loot it :)

My brother, I have been hunting the Hills since I was 5th level, and I am still gaining experience. Get bound in Qeynos, and revel in the spoils of the south. You should begin to hunt the rabid denizens of the hills, and turning their pelts (and any fleshy orbs) in to Priestess Caulria at the Qeynos Temple of Life. She gives great experience, cures disease (for rabid wolf pelts), and 1-2p and Endure Disease scroll (for rabid bear pelts). After about 13-14, even her assistance will make progression slow, so then it is time to group up and head to Blackburrow (for gnoll bashing) or West Karanas (for bandit bashing, get the sashes to Chesgard in the pally guild). Good luck!

Killing Blacbburrow gnolls seems to please the Qeynos guards. Once you have done that long enough they will tolerate you.

Some people in Noratrh may hate you from the start, but if you can find a way to make them like you better, they will eventually be your friend, no matter how bad they hated you from the beginning.

I'm a newbie ranger. I serve Tunare. Is it "legal" for a Ranger to kill animals such as snakes, bats, spiders - i.e. things not usually endearing to humans? I do not want to mess up my reputation and my future by doing the "wrong" thing. I want to stay on good terms with the druids who share my origin zone, Surefall Glade. Appeciate any advice.

Actually, as a ranger out of Surefall, you can kill naything you want. You can kill wolves and bears whenever you want, your faction with druids and stuff will not go down. However, don't be attacking a wolf or bear (even rabid) when Holly Windstalker or the other roaming NPC gets near you, or you're dead.

I hunt the Hills often, and the only universally-available way to get magic there is to /auction for it. Lots of folks cut through the Hills to get to Qeynos, and they often have old stuff to sell. I got a Velium Morningstar for about 20p, and it's served me for quite a while, and will be even better once I'm high enough to get it to proc. Also, as a pally, you might want to ask for a magic shield (like a Shiny Brass Shield) so you can Bash magically, too. There is one quest that can get you the Jaggedpine Crook (magical staff from SG), but I think it's Ranger/Druid only. Hope this helps!

How do I get to Freeport from Qeynos/Qeynos Hills?
RE: Freeport
# Jul 12 2001 at 4:44 AM Rating: Decent
By far the best way is to get some nice person to teleport you, otherwise you're on foot.

This will be kind of an interesting run. It takes >1/2 hour of just travelling time - and you'll likely need a change of underwear a couple of times along the way.

I've done half the run naked and weaponless, so it's not as dangerous as you might think, you just have to be careful.

This guide will only get you as far as highpass hold - I've not been the whole distance myself.

First, head east from Qeynos Hills into the west karanas.

Once in West Karanas, don't just follow the path east - you'll run into bears and all kinds of aggressive creatures. If you head right(ish), you'll eventually reach the river.

Follow the river east, giving any npc's a wide berth (they're likely bandits, there's at least one camp along the river)

This will take you all the way to the north karanas. Where you must continue to follow the river.

There are two bridges in North Karanas, you want the second one. The zone border is on the bridge, so that's a fairly safe place to rest.

Now you've got the trickiest bit, the run through East Karanas.

Almost directly ahead of you is a valley that leads to a ramp that leads up into the mountains. It's only a short distance, but there are a number of nasty high level creatures that will attack unless you're careful not to be spotted by them. Once on the ramp, you should be okay. Don't enter the towers, there are bandits in some of them. It's a long way up the ramp, but you'll get to the highpass gate eventually.

Highpass hold is a dangerous place - at one end are gnolls, and at the other end orcs. There may be some NPC's in the middle that are KOS. Get a map so you don't get lost in there, and shout to find out whether the gnolls/orcs have been cleared, or whether you're going to have to run for the zone. There's usually a few folks here, so you should be able to find someone that will help you get safely in, and out the other side.

Kithicor Forest is next - don't leave the zone tunnel at night; there are some pretty nasty undead around.

If you just follow the path east from here, you should reach west, then east commonlands - then freeport.

If you can travel in a group, great. Otherwise, keep your eyes open, especially at night.

In front of BB there's a new stone hut, and loathsome individuals hang out there that are much higher level than the norm for that zone, see through invis, and aggro to everything I know of. Lots of the loathsome folks are casters, so be very careful if you decide to hunt them.

If they don't con green, they're going to be very hard to kill, and if there are several, you'd better have a good group.

There are some lower level ones in North Qeynos that stand to the left of the secret entrance facing the city. Don't get complacent with those and blunder into a quick death in Qeynos Hills.

This is a "story development", so I don't know how long they will stay, but if you're hunting normal creatures in the hills, give them a wide berth! I understand they've killed folks into their 40's, though the loathsomes I saw were only in their 30's or below themselves (conned blue or green to my level 35 druid, who left them alone).

Willowisps are good exp hunting in these levels. They also drop a Greater Lightstone once in a while which can be traded at the gypsy camp in North Karana for a book worth about 8-9pp. I suggest saving a backpack full of GLS's or more before you make the trip (for more info see the quest section). If they drop a burnt-out lightstone you can dest it. It's not worth anything except as a research component.

Beware that these creatures can only be harmed with magical weapons and magical spells.

Since this is the home of many a druid and ranger, would you not expect a large number of animals, indeed this is one of the best places for beginning tailors to practice their trade(despite cros treewind and Holly windstalker who will both kill you if you are attacking or being attacked by an animal, it doesn't matter who started it).

Ok most people know the zone for the wolves and the gnolls, perhaps even the undead ruins, but this is also a good place to hunt around the 6th or 7th level or so. why? Giant Bats. WHAT? well actually giant bats are fairly good hunting for this level, their furs and wings sell for more than regular bat stuff, and you are relatively safe while hunting them. However, I would rather recommend a 2 or 3 person group at this level hunting snakes in BB but that is a whole different place and not subject to this guide.

There is also a nice druid staff quest in surefall glade, if you can get yourself a gnoll hunter, they occasionally drop broken staff parts, these can sell for quite a bit of money, enough to buy all of your level 8 or 9 spells.
And speaking of good loot rabid grizzlies are awesome hunting for a tracker(ranger) grouping with 1 other person (preferably a shaman or cleric to counteract the rabies [you don't want to go to qeynos every time you kill a bear to get your rabies shot, or beg everyone for a heal ])

Oh and BTW for the last several patches the cottage(store) in the QHills has been broken, you can't open the door, so no selling to merchants, it makes hunting in BB slightly less atttractive.

Well here's hoping for another Undead invasion this Halloween

Varsoon the Undying

A really unusual NPC, often camped by higher level players out for experience only (not much loot to speak of). Varsoon the Undying is a necromancer who spawns near the undead ruins in the northeastern corner of the zone (past the Blackburrow entrance), complete with pet. Kill him, and he re-spawns in an undead version (neat, huh?). I'm not sure if he keeps his old hate list, but I'm led to believe that he does, so if you're still hanging around QH after wiping that smug look off his living mug, just be prepared for:

Varsoon the Undying shouts, "Aaaarrrrgh! You have disturbed my rest! Now suffer as I have!"
Varsoon the Undying hits you for 41 damage...

Here's the kicker...he keeps coming back almost immediately upon dying (I don't know how many times). Someone with real brass could theoretically kill him as many times as they liked until...

Ah, yes, the GM event that may not be a GM event. Every once in a while, Varsoon will get *really* upset and take over the entire zone for a few hours. By this, I mean that every single MOB in the zone is transformed into some unusual type of skeleton--undead soldiers, skeletal monks, warbone skeletons (20 feet tall), that sort of thing--and they run around the zone terrorizing the newbies until Varsoon finally gets tired. This is a whole bunch of fun (and there are corpses *everywhere* when it finishes up). It's unclear whether this is a timed event, an automatically triggered event, or whether a GM actually has to initiate it, but it's happened at various times on a number of servers--generally, no more than once every six months, real time.

Oh, and, during the event, the guards turn into skels, too. Just thought I'd warn you. :)

Ok, no one would ever camp Varsoon for exp, he is a very rare spawn. Second, after killing Varsoon, level 25, his undead version appears, Varsoon the undying, 30 to 35 level, the undying version does not have a pet and immidiatly runs to his despawn point. The only time I killed varsoon, with a 29 wiz of course, the undying did NOT come after us. Another time, a 54 wiz helped me by killing both forms, the undying did NOT respawn after being killed.

Something which took me a while to figure out, soo i'll share it with you. There is a shop in the QH zone which has the same faction as Qeynos Merchants and buys for the same prices as the shop near the gate (forgot the name). The people that run it are the Sayers. (check out the map section for the location) So if you've hunted in BB, gathered some loot and want to sell it i suggest selling it here. This shop however doesn't sell much unless you're a smith so if you want to buy stuff you're still gonna have to go to Qeynos.

A quest i always do with low level chars for good exp gathering is camping the gnolls and gnoll watchers at the Blackburrow entrance for their fangs. (see quest section for more details)

The location of the gnolls:
1 or 2 gnolls, next to the entrance on the right hand side.
1 gnoll, a little further off on the left hand side. I usually pull this gnoll a little away from the wall otherwise he'll run up the wall once he flees.
3 gnoll watchers, walk away from the entrance about 20 paces. they're to the left (with your back to the entrance) by a big tree.

Qeynos and give the fangs 1 at a time to a guy in the firs house on the balcony to the left. U will get a moonstone for every one u give. after u turn in all ur fangs take the moonstones u get and give them 1 at a time to a guy named mcneal i think in the very back of the fishs ale or something. Give 1 at a time to him for blackburrow stouts. u can either get drunk or sell them back for a couple of silver a piece i think. U get good exp for all of ths and good money. i am a lv8 druid and i still do it just for the fact that i kill lots of gnolls and cant give to newbies. hope this helps :P

Instead of handing in 1 tooth (and moonstone) at a time, you can hand in 4 at a time (teeth can be stacked)

ok, fangs CANNOT be stacked, you get exp for 1 if you stack them, but you CAN put 1 in each of the 4 give slots, guys name is Captian Tillin, guy in Fishe's Eye is Jacub McNeal. and if you kill a gnoll and don't want the fang LEAVE IT ON THE BODY, do NOT loot it, then a newbie CAN get it

There are two Ranger/Druids that wander this zone and assist wolves and bears, even rabid ones. Both are more than high enough to take out anyone low enough to be hunting the animals, so care should be taken that Cros Treewind and Holly Windstalker are nowhere in sight when you start combat with a wild animal.

Cros Treewind has been out of the game for some time now, so you only have to watch out for Holly Windstalker. Cros had a nice staff that made him worth killing; I don't know if they removed him just to remove his loot, or halve the chances of being killed when hunting rabid animals. In a somewhat ironic justice, Cros was killed by a diseased bear... you can read about it on the official EQ site (part of the rude/loathsome individual story).

The rabid animal quests are given in the Temple of Life, that flying-saucer thing over the pool in North Qeynos. They're good exp for the levels where you get exp from killing the wolves and bears.

The only way I found to get either of these eco-terrorists off of you (besides zoning or vanishing) is to make tracks for Surefall Glades tunnel. I managed to loose Holly (thanks to some timely assistance) long enough to make it past the guards and into the tunnel. She won't chase you past them so you have a chance to heal up. Make sure your amiable or better to the guards (kill lots of gnolls), and you can probably be safe. I haven't tried this with the guard tower, but I'm assuming it would work as long as the only way she can reach you is by going through the guards.

It's not just deity, it's race.

I'm an agnostic human enchanter and I am "ready to attack" to them when I'm illusioned as a dark elf. The guards only view me dubiously.
