The Paludal Caverns are a network of fungus and mold-ridden caves located beneath Hollowshade Moor. In addition to the usual lineup of creatures you'd find in such an area, there are also a few camps of Recondite bandits established here.

Shadow Haven Entrance
# Aug 12 2002 at 10:20 AM Rating: Decent
Ok this is my first time in anywhere in Luclin (apart from Nexus) and I need some help. Throughout various posts it mentions using invisibility or Sow to get past the entrances. I have a question. Are all the enemies in this area as bad as strong asd the ones at the entrance from Shadow Haven. I went in with my Season 16 mage, made my self invis and wandered around for a while. Suddenly five long bits of whtie message come up followed by "Something begining with R Hits you for 64" then something else hit me for equal damage, i ran around desperately trying to find my way to the zone in the dark before dieng on top of some mushrooms. I recovered my corpse thanks to the majesty of Invis and gated back to Shadow Haven. So my question: Once you get past the bandits, burglars and such at the entrance is the rest of the zone slightly easier to work with? also everyone mentions getting to season 17 in particular, why is that?

Coming from Shadow Haven, you have to get past the 'high end' of the zone. The Recondites and the Patog Phlarg Fiends, which are high teen to low twenties. (And the fiends have a rather nasty and LONG disease based DOT)

the Plerg Phlarg Fiends (with the same disease based DOT) are lower in level (low to mid teens)

In some of the lake areas you may occassionally find Large Wetfangs. These fish are aggressive toward anyone who enters the water as far as I know.

There are also the Owlbear types and the Outcast Shik'Nar, but with the exception of Yelloweyes who is right outside Shadow Haven, you almost have to go looking to find any of them.

If I recall correctly that concludes the list of AGGRESSIVE mobs in this zone. All of these are social as well.

Aside from them, there are assorted crab-like bugs (muck digger, mud burrower, grime tunneler, etc) which are not aggressive in my experience, but are social. Then there are the varying levels of Sensate Reishi which are non aggressive and non social. So they'll stand idly by while you massacre others of their kind.

At the Shadeweavers Thicket side, you can find mobs such as mud burrowers (I believe they are the lowest levels of the bugs) and Sesate Reishi Sprouts as low as about level 3 or 4.

If you want reasonably safe prey at low level, start with the sprouts, work up to the juveniles then eventually to "a sensate reishi" followed by "mature sensate reishi" After that, it's hard to find really "SAFE" hunting, because you have to get near either the fiends, the Shik'Nar or the Recondites to find higher level Reishi (Sensate Reishi Elder)

ya... the bandits are the whole point of this place...
if ur lvl 16, then u can get a group at one of the bandit camps no problem. oh, and some of the mushrooms have these eyes on them that make it so they can see inviso people. also WATCH OUT for the bandit's backstab, it does about 110 dmg on average, VERY painful if you ask me.

once u get into a grp at a bandit camp u will start gettin mad exp and u should do this all the way till 24, then everything pretty much cons lt blue, and then lvling is painfully slow

if that dont satisfy you then you should make another post or email me then i can answer any questions you might have - and... SEE THE MAP at www.eqatlas.com - it is SO USEFUL!!!!

There is now, if You have Planes of Power. come from Shar Vahl to Shadeweavers, turn left and find the book to port to Plane of Knowledge. From Plane of Knowledge use the column that is nearby to teleport to the book in the Nexus.

i took my level 16 necro up here and left at level 23. killing reconciles but mostly camping for fiends. i now have a level 15 shammy and once she hits 16 i will take her up there too. the money is good. the armor drop is good. great stuff for not such a hard zone.

dont get me wrong it is a big pain in the *** when you get hit by the reconciles when you not ready but all in all one of my favorite zones. Now i havn't been there since the big patch. i hope it is still not that busy.

LEVELING GUIDE!!!
# Jul 17 2002 at 6:10 PM Rating: Good
I have leveled from level 5 level 24 here. You should leave once you get to lvl 24 because the exp is CRAP HERE AFTER THAT. the bandits are lvl 16-20. nothing in whole zone is higher then 22 except for marciella - level 23-24 spawn, and the reishicyben - lvl 24 (the master mushroom - quite big, good drops) Here is the lvling guide...

5-12 - you can go to the lake that is right outside of the tunnel that goes from shadeweavers thicket - kill everything that cons blue and white - yellow too if you are a a twink

12-16 - from the tunnel from shadeweavers, you go straight out and straight across the lake. you go straight through that tunnel and on the socond left u take it - there will be 3 mushrooms - mature or regular - and a grime tunneler - kill the regular reishi and the tunneler if u can until you can handle the matures... dont ever go past there into the feind lake - u WILL get killed either because they kill u or the horrible DoT they put on you

16-24 - from the last tunnel - get an invis and run past the feinds - stick to left wall and take all lefts until u get to the tunnel in front of a bandit camp - when ur in that tunnel u are completeley *safe*. try and find a group at one of the bandit camps - B1 is the camp right in frot of the tunnel - to get to B2 you have to stick to the left wall out from the tunnel and next to the lake - it is kinda long - you should arrive at a similar camp.

*safe* trains of bandits come through that tunnel often - when someone gets trained the bandits come back the same way and WILL attack you - so stay at a safe distance if a train comes by.

P.S. - SoW DOES NOT WORK HERE!!!

well SOW must be cast before you zone into shadowhaven, then haul a$$ to PC... usually, my sow lasts 45 minutes in PC...

on a different note...

one day, I went into PC and was trying to find a good group to go to camp 2 <if you know PC... you know that if you hang a left after the first recondite camp, you go a bit further and you find the second recondite camp... which has about twice the amount of recondites... very god exp>... 2 druids and a ranger couldn't take it... luckily I found a necro... so, our group of a 22 druid, 23 druid, 18 ranger and 24 necro was pretty good... so we went for the fiends... then we found a beastlord LFG... at level 25, he was the plane ticket to experience!!! so we got him, headed to camp 2, and we had fun... the necro had his pet, beastlord had his... there were 4 tanks, while the druids sat back <before this I scored a free KEI>... so I nuked, healed, buffed, DS-ed, snared, dotted... I was a real big help... but we were having some problems... our ogre beastlord was doing well, but with three recondites on him at once, his HP was slowly going down... then we found ANOTHER ogre beastlord at same level LFG so we got him... at one point we took 7 recondites and destroyed them... unfortunately I looted one of them, got some words, gave it to the necro, and got backstabbed by two recondites who spawned at once right there behind me instantly killing me... I lost 3 blues... I was at 1 blue till level... now, i am at 4... oh well

REMEMBER: Beastlords, regardless of race, are a bit better than warriors with their pets tanking... as well as them... if you ever see a beastlord LFG and within your levels, take him...
Easy leveling with the named bandit--maricella
# Jul 08 2002 at 8:46 AM Rating: Decent
I went into this zone with my wizard and found out you can kill maricella 13min spawn time even when she cons red. There is a spot off to her right up high on the wall that she wont aggro if you just sit back and nuke her. Youll have enough time to med up before her next spwan. You can do this from 17th lvl. and she is a 24-26th lvl spawn.
Great exp 12-26
# Jun 27 2002 at 12:36 PM Rating: Good
This is by far the best exp i have found from 12 all the way to 26. Took my troll warrior here at 19, hit 26 in a few days of casual playing, and now i have my barb rogue here. Showed up at level 12, had 1 gold of exp. I sneaked my way over to the hollowshade zone and set up camp soloing the beetles and the solo shroom over there. After 3 hours of playing, i am now half way through level 14, and havent died at all, because the zone is so close in case you get in trouble.

Another benefit is the almost constant flow of 30+ chars heading to/from hollowshade, and most of them were kind enough to heal or buff me as they ran past. Great experience here due to dungeon and moon bonuses, i advise everyone to try it out.

Lag was bad, so I put my Lvl 2 Beastlord thru
the trek set out by him, and made it to Shadowhaven FIRST attempt. Everything is bang on,
apart from the fact Im agnostic but the bandits still scowled at me. Not really a problem though,

Woot! Somebody read my post :)

Twas a great feeling, getting through there for the first time. Of course, these days the trek is a bit different, since the bandits are much more heavily camped than when I snuck my kitties through. This can be troublesome if a bandit suddenly turns to face you when turning on an attacker or walking back from a fight, but mostly it just distracts them and makes the trip easier.

I went in here last night for the first time. i came to shadowhaven for a necro spell and someone ask me to check it out. Now i have been to some zones and gave the shout level 17 necro or level 16 necro looking for group. Last night walked in and figure i would give a shout a try. Level 18 necro lfg right away someone anwsered. I went from just being level 18 to 1 bubble in 19 in a little over 2:30 hours. the exp here is great. got a nice dagger for myself. The only other time i level that fast was in befallen that is because of the 15% bonus exp. I have been telling everone that i know if you need to level for 17 to 22 go to Paludal. It is worth a trip to the moon just to try.
Just...WOW. Don't read this, just go to Paludal!! Hehe.
# Jun 18 2002 at 4:54 PM Rating: Default
I came here out of Crushbone, a level 16 Wizard, tired of camping greens and blues in the TR with 13's and sometimes even 11's. I asked a higher level friend of mine where was a good place to go after CB. She told me Paludal. I've been routinely going to Luclin since 12, so an opportunity to actually *hunt* there (instead of making run up there for 'O'keils Embers') and to get out of CB sounded very nice. When I got into the caverns, I helped a Ranger out killing a 'shroom. It was then my great fortune to get into a group composed of some over 20. Then, what I've heard about this place comes in.
The UNGODLY (in a good way =P) amount of XP.
'Holy and godlike' I've heard say.

Basically, around 18-21 or so try to get in a Recondite group near the entrance to Shadow Haven. This zone isn't very highly populated, trains can rival those of BlackBurrow, and if you're caught unawares by the Recons, you can take a pretty nasty beating. Just make sure you're bound in SH.

Oh, and I'm not sure as I only heard it once, but I don't think SoW works here.. I'm probably mistaken, though. Anyhow. Paludal is great. Go there, NOW.

Getting Your Newbie Kitty Through
# Apr 30 2002 at 1:37 PM Rating: Good
In my first couple of attempts at creating a newbie Vah Shir, I quickly came to the conclusion that I hated the Luclin newbie zones. Not to mention that, on my modest system, the lag throughout Luclin is virtually unbearable. So, I decided to take him to my old stomping grounds in Freeport.

Ah, but getting there... that proved ... challenging. The ONLY way from Shar Vahl to Shadowhaven is through these horrible caverns, and that means walking past the not-too-friendly Fiends and Bandits.

But it CAN be done. Here's how.

First, take the north exit out of Shar Vahl to Hollowshade Moor. Follow the zone wall to the right until you come upon a cave entrance near the edge of a lake; this is the entrance to Paludal. Beware - aggro creatures DO wander near the zone wall in Hollowshade, and a few of my attempted runs to Shadow Haven were cut tragically short by this fact. But they are sparse enough that if you keep your eyes open, you should be able to avoid them.

Upon entering the caverns, you will be greeted by a variety of bugs and mushrooms. They are not KOS, so just ignore them. Follow the tunnel until you can see it open up into a larger watery room; you will also encounter your first set of Phlarg Fiends.

Because of my numerous unsuccessful runs through the caverns, I have developed quite an aversion to these <shudder> ghastly abominations. They have a gigantic aggro range, are quite social, and are thus very deadly to the unsuspecting newbie. But they do have a weakness .. you can sneak past them.

All Vah Shir are blessed with innate sneaking ability. It is this skill which will allow you to survive the trip through these caverns. When you approach the first set of fiends target one with its back to you. Engage your sneak skill. If it still scowls at you, the sneak attempt failed - wait a few seconds for the button to become active again, an re-try. As soon as it cons indifferent, you'll know that you're sneaking. (Another way to tell if you're sneaking is that, when sneak works, you will walk very slowly.) From now on, your goal is to stay near to Fiends that have their backs to you. Luckily, most of the fiends are stationary and will all face the same direction, so you will be able to walk behind several fiends without being spotted. Just remember - you can get close to them, but whatever you do, DO NOT GET IN **FRONT** OF THEM!!! If you hear their attack emote "a plerg phlarg fiend hisses threateningly filling the air with the stench of moldy decay", then CONGRATULATIONS! You have just earned a trip back to Shar Vahl, compliments of the fiend you just aggroed!

When you enter the first fiend area, bear right. Rememer to hug the wall tightly and stay behind the fiends. You will come upon a tunnel to the right guarded by a fiend - sneak past and enter. You should now be headed West. When the tunnel forks, bear to the left. You'll come upon another watery area with fiends. Hang a left, ducking to walk through a jagged rock formation just behind another fiend. Stay on the wall to the left until you come upon another tunnel to the left, which you'll take. You should be headed South now. When the road forks up ahead, go right.

The next fiend - populated area you'll encounter is a large room with a substantial drop-off into a lake below. Your exit is to the south, but you can't go that way from here - there are wandering fiends that way. Instead, we'll be taking the scenic route. Head right. Stay high upon the wall behind the fiends; you'll occasionally run into a fiend that's wandering your way along the main path, but you should be able to stay out of its aggro range on the wall. Head north, and you'll eventually be clear of the fiends and ready for your next challenge; the recondite bandits.

Now, first /con a bandit. If you're dubious, the rest of your trip through Paludal will be much less stressful. This was the case with my agnostic bard. However, my Tunare-worshipping shaman (on the Sullon Zek server) was not nearly as popular. If you're KOS to the bandits, there's a bit more work to be done.

Watch out for the wandering bandits (again, stay up on the wall) and continue to head north toward the camp. Follow the wall to the right. At one point, you'll come upon the north end of the camp, and a seemingly unavoidable set of three bandits. But, AHA! The bandits are facing away from another. You can sneak in between them. Be careful, of course, and always /con to make sure you're out of view. Follow the wall again and begin to head to the south. Continue to watch out for wandering bandits.

One note: on the path to the south, you'll reach a very small spot where the path becomes submerged, and you must swim a few feet. Be aware that there is a giant piranah called "a large wetfang" in the water here. It's KOS when you're in the water, so make sure it's not nearby before you make this swim.

Continue to follow the wall to the right until you reach the south bandit camp. If yellow eyes is up, bear in mind he is on the same faction as the bandits; if you're not KOS to them, you're not KOS to him either, in spite of how freaky he looks. If you are KOS, simply continue to hug the wall to the right. Be aware of people camping the bandits; a train WILL ***** things up for you. Once you're on a nicer looking path to the south, you should be home free to Shadow Haven.

And there you have it. Feel free to post if I've made any horrendous errors. And enjoy your liberation from the lag-pit known as Luclin!

I went here first at 19 on a Saturday and stayed for 7 hours RL time. By the time I was done I was 25!! This was all done at the Yelloweyes Bandit camp.
About Half of this was grouped with a monk. My role was healing snaring and the occaisional nuke - the other half was my luck at having been offered to join in on a PL session.. ( lvl 50 cleric buffed and healed me and monk)
But either way the fact is ..
This exp is the best I've encountered better than Crushbone, better than crocs in Oasis.

The drops were good too,
Plenty of banded to sell ( crawling to vendors!!)
recondite dirk (not bad ac and dex in range slot)
Perfect owl bear pelt ( woot! for rallic quest)
yellow eyes collar ( wis and str)
quest stuff: gold tooth, glass eye

So if you're 20 or about head to the moon!

Here's the deal. We started a small group at the first bandits here this afternoon. The beginning group was 1 bard (21)(me), 1 shaman (20) and 2 clerics, both 21. The ending group was 1 bard (23), 1 enchanter (23) and two clerics (both 23). I gained 13 yellow bubbles in 2 & 1/2 hours there. I was puller and main tank at all times. The experience never stopped. We had practically zero downtime and the mobs were easily split without using lull. If we had had a real tank we would have owned the zone. I will never go back to the Lake of Ill Manners for the low twenties again. This is the best zone for those levels I've ever seen.

RE: Traveling
# Feb 20 2002 at 12:28 PM Rating: Decent
There's a large camp of Recondite bandits just outside the mouth of the entrance to Shadow Haven. If you're coming from Shadeweaver's Thicket, then you want to go high up the left wall once you get to the camp. If you get aggroed by a bandit, you'll have a gang on you in a heartbeat. Since they seem to be mostly rogues, you get backstabbed for NASTY damage if you run. Without SoW, you wouldn't make it ten steps at level 7 or 8.

As for other threats, there's the Phlarg Fiends. They're agressive, also hit for heavy damage, and cast Spreading Crud, which there is some commentary on further elsewhere in this discussion group.

If you plan on running through here at a low level, I'd keep up a constant prayer that my invisibility and/or SoW doesn't let up on the way... and don't get lost.

Being a 17 enchanter and fighting in this zone is not for the faint of heart....not because of the mobs but because the groups I have been in are filled with the most amazing idiots! Example: Lets duel in the middle of fighting while the healer is afk and pull the bandit camp thereby wiping out party members Example: I want to pull, where's your inc message i ask, i dont have an inc message, ok how about the monk continues to pull then, and then this guy proceeds to pull anyway and wack on all my mezzed mobs....we die again....and it goes on and on. Is there some newb magnet emanating from this zone? Am I becoming bitter because I'm an alt and expect to play with people who have a slight clue? Oh well..just had to vent. This zone is amazingly well designed, super creepy, great sound effects, amazing looking mobs...I was very impressed with Verant on this one....just wish I was more impressed with the players.

I feel for you, friend. I've been lucky enough to have the opposite experience. With the help of some good partners/groups, I managed to rip from 22nd to deep into 24th level in a weekend, and just hit 25th a couple of days ago.

The recondite camps are fantastic with a good group, the exp is outstanding for low-20's, and the loot is pretty good as well. There's a lot of junk, to be sure, but the bronze brigandine armor sells for a few plat, and it's fairly easy to crawl back to Shadow Haven with 20-40 plat per load.

I'm sure you know this, but if you find yourself in a group of clueless idiots, get the heck out and find someone that knows what they're doing. I'd rather group with one person that's got it together than with five morons. One good partner can keep you alive. Five fools just get you killed in more interesting ways.

Good luck Faydson...

It gave me the Spreading Crud. It took over 100 points off me and I died. What is the cure for this thing?

RE: Spreading Crud
# Feb 20 2002 at 12:13 PM Rating: Decent
It's a disease, so you need a cure disease spell. I think you need several of them for it to be completely gone.

The Crud is one nasty disease. It acts like a poison spell, but seems to last about as long as Rabies. From what I've seen, sitting seems to stop the HP loss, but you don't regenerate at all. If you're standing or fighting, it's as though you've been DoT-ed.

When I played my ranger and caught this, it was a real pain. No one was around that could cure disease, so he had to constantly hit himself with bandages and heals to keep his HP up.

The Patog Phlarg Fiends (spelling may be off) will give you this, so be careful fighting them.

You need three cure diseases to get rid of the spreading crud. If you're grouping and have someone who can heal, wait until the group is going to rest before curing it, because you'll be diseased again in no time flat.

I have been hunting off and on here since level 9 or so, basically whenever I want to level rather than do the armor quests or practice tailoring in Shadeweavers Thicket. The experience in here is great, you can move further in as you level and fight more powerful mobs.

Now at lvl 15 I am soloing in a side tunnel where sensate reishis and their mature cousins spawn frequently. Almost no downtime for me and my pet and great experience!

First things first, I think this zone rocks. As the first zone I really leveled in on Luclin, it gave me a really great *hopeful* preview of what Luclin is like.
At level 22 I was able to solo 1, mabye 2 recondites at a time (all I levled off of), but instead I found groups. Althought all the recondites conned blue to me, I zipped thru the levels all the way to 24 very fast. By 24 I could easily solo 2,3 mabye 4 at a time.
Many items that drop there have not been posted. One of the pulls for leveling here is the loot off the recondites, which include many banded armor peices which sell from 1-3pp + change. At the end of it I came out with 234pp, very nice for my level (24 Shadow Knight is my main). There have also been a few rare drops that I have managed to pick up, the items I mention that they have not posted yet. They inluded Yelloweyes Collar (collard dropped off named owl bear in SH camp, it weighs .1 has +2 wis and +3 str and 5 ac, perfect for BST) Recondite Dirk (4dmg 22dly 1ac 3dex, can go in ranged, found 3, too bad there lore) and Journeymans Etchinkinda (dropped off recondites, rarest of all, 6dmg 28dly 1wis 15mana 1sv cold 1 sv fire, BST only).
The great loot combined with the great expiereince make this my *possibly* favorite zone. Now does anyone know where I should level on Luclin at 24?
