Paineel NPC Guards
# May 06 2001 at 5:21 PM Rating: Default
I hear a lot of conflicting information regarding wheather a PC will be KOS to the guards in the Newbie area in Paineel.
It seems like it depends on your class/race/level. I have a 16th season Wood Elf Druid that had just arrived without killing a thing in all of Odus. I was KOS to the guards that hit in the 130+ range and took me down in a New York minute! Had to go cammo and drag my corpse back to the zone. Everybody should remember that just because it happened to U, that it may not happen to everyone else the same way.

I am a 17th lvl druid named igrain on the morrel-thule server. I started fighting in the warrens at lvl 14. From what i have experienced u do not need to be invis or camo to get past gaurds at the entrance just walk through the middle of the entrance to the newbie zone in paineel. They have nevr attacked me except when i made the mistake of attacking them since they con blue. Once inside at about lvl 14 on u can get by with a group of 3 people your lvl. usually pulling from the archway in the prince room and the various named spawns in the are(jailor, Smithy, trainor and the pitfighters). I have had some luck soloing the jailor by using root and nuke tactics once i hit 15 since everything around him cons low green at that lvl. With a full group of 15-17s i was able to kill the prince a few times. He drops all forms of bamboo armor and some forlorn items (only had the cape drop for my group but we managed to get complete set of bamboo armor).
A little side note u can usually sell a full set of soft wicker to people from 25-30pp the most i got for a complete set was 50pp. Also as long as someone from the group can still get exp from the kill the mob will still drop its rare items. As i go further into the zone i will post more.

KOS problems
# Apr 17 2001 at 7:15 AM Rating: Default
Azzar Habbib will aggro you from his spawn point unless he is dead. The guards wont and neither will the NPC above them, but Habbib will. Therefore, you need camo/invis or faction to get to warrens.
Ogres/trolls SK are KOS. Agnostics are also. In fact you are probably KOS unless you are from paineel. You can check before going thru by staying on the wall to the left and peering in at a guard to con him.
RE: KOS problems

i am a dwarf paladin level 21 and i kill that noclin guy daily so my faction with paineel is low to the ground but i never use invis/camo/sneak/hide or anything to hide myself from the guards and azzier only agroed to me if i go to the guard on the left near his spawn point so i have no problems getting through there and it says my faction cant be any lower)
easy zone
# Apr 17 2001 at 7:00 AM Rating: Default
I hunted here for 15 levels on 2 different erudite chars..
It is quite possible to never pull more than 3 mobs in this zone, and often easy to pull 2 or less. Its actually a great place to solo from lvl 5 or 6 to about 20.
Nothing will aggro you unless it cons upper green or more, or you try to med nearby something, or perhaps it aggroes your pet (i never had a pet here so I dont know about this). All you have to do is check the patrols which are set and do not change, and keep out of them, then pull mobs to a safe place, and do not under any circumstance allow them to run away to other mobs that will aggro you.
Now I dont find this very difficult to do, but for some reason people train here all the time. It baffles me that this happens so much, actually, because its so simple to pull set amounts of mobs here, but nevertheless it happens. Therefore, you want to avoid the path from other people to the zone, especially if they seem a little slow-witted. I find twinks tend to train the most because they like to try and take on mobs that are simply too strong for them even with their twinkage. Of course, the most dangerous place in the zone is thus the entrance/exit, and if you are unable to fight away from the entrance/exit you might want to avoid this zone completely unless noone else is there.
Another thing, if you are KOS in paineel you can always hunt kobolds in Toxx woods for a while until you arent. Took about 150 kobolds for my good erudite wiz to be dubious in paineel.

Iksar - great place for them
# Apr 16 2001 at 10:36 AM Rating: Decent
Iksars can become nonkos with paineel much easier than woodelfs if they worship Cazic Thule. The place is fantastic for faction. Kill a few hundred kobolds and you should be set. Thing is there are so many running around that you can just tag ones that others are working on and kill some of your own. Very fast. I have my erud ench, erud sk, ogre sk, iksar shaman and halfelf bard over there now. My favorite zone in the game and Paineel is a great place to bring over characters at first level. Decaying skels till 5th will make you plenty on bonechips. Rusty weapons are good loot (you will need a mule to buy and sell). Then Warrens from 5th-12th or so.

RE: Iksar
# Apr 16 2001 at 10:44 AM Rating: Default
I have a Troll Sk, and it took me awhile to build the faction up. Basicly, forget about doing anything else, and go on a killing spree for a few hours. Then check your faction with the guards at the Newbie zone. You can bank at Dubious, buy/sell at apprehensive, but what you really want is Amiable, so that you can get your own key and not have to wait for someone else to open the @$#! door. The Heritics are worshipers of Cazic Thule, so it may be easier for Trolls and Iskar who follow that religion. It took me a while to get to dubious, then I focused on boosting my faction, and went from Dubious to Amaible in a day. Just kill everything you can, forget looting, and wait till amaible. Then you can start raking in the cash. Bamboo boken, which are a fairly common drop, sell for 5 plat. This is an awsome place for getting money in the bank. Definatly worth the effort if you are an Iskar Necro or SK, since you can train here and buy spells as well.

Where to go?
# Apr 05 2001 at 1:11 PM Rating: Default
I came to the warrens with a human lev 7 necro. I love playing Human characters by the way.

I can barely kill one of the kobolds (which are blue to me) before I have to zone because of the five others who are beating on me. My pet dies right off the bat.

And this is as soon as you zone into the warrens.

I did manage to enlist the help of a high level shaman (thank you again) who taunted the others off me so I could kill them one at a time (only needed 2 to go to level 8).

How is a level 5 characters supposed to survive here?

Am I supposed to run past the kobolds and hunt deeper into the warrens?

A little guidance would be helpful, this is, after all, a strategy board.
:)
RE: lvl 6-8 pet casters
# Apr 11 2001 at 11:30 AM Rating: Excellent
My advice is geared for the pet caster (Necro, Mage and even Enchanters) level 6-8.

As an Erudite Mage, I started coming to the warrens at 6th level. The xp is incredible (even with the dying), loot is fantastic (save those molars!), and faction is all good.

Mages: if you do not use an earth pet (at least for level 6-7), you will regret it. Trains here develope quickly and will rollover you faster than you can say "Loading, please wait".

For 6-7, if you are not in a group, stay put at the enterance. Any farther in and you are dead.

My biggest shock upon coming here is that the first level Kobold Runts you loved smacking around in the forest will sometimes lay quite a beating on you because, in the Warrens, their levels range from 1-4.

Zoning In:
If you turn to your left (North) once zoning in (called the king side) there is a spawn point for a stationary guard at the corner. He is ~ level 4-5. If you pull him, you will pull another stationary spawn right around the corner (again level 4-5). Typically I could fight them both with little problem. Be aware that there is a patrolling kobold (usually a runt or guard type) that patrols from the guard in the corner down the ramp, past two other stationary guards into a large room with many others. If you time it wrong and he adds to you while fighting the first two, it can get ugly.

After clearing the first two guards, kill the patroller if you haven't already. Park your pet by the exit -- until you get your level 8 pet, it will aggro everything and can cause a train. Turning left at the corner (West) you see a ramp going down and there is a landing with two stationary guards past which the ramp goes further into a large cavern. These two will be Rabid or Guard type kobolds (usually) ~4-7 level. Pulling one will result in pulling the other. Make sure you are full mana then pull and run back to the entrance where you should fight them.

Two others you may want to fight (if you find yourself waiting for the five mentioned above to spawn) are to your right when you zone in (South) -- this is called the Prince side. They are guarding a doorway and are ~5-7 level. Again, there is a patrolling one that runs past them to the bend before turning around and running back down the corridor. Try to time it so he doesn't add.

If other people are are killng these mobs, another nice little place is (on the king side) to the right (north) of the landing on the ramp where the two guards spawn is a cavern that runs west and then south to connect to where the ramp comes down. In this cavern, kill the runt on the right (east) side of the cavern. He is out of the agro range of the other 3 in the cavern. You can sit and med in his place (make sure to '/pet guard here' to keep your pet from wandering). The other three kobolts in the room typically comprise at least one runt, sometimes two. If you pull one, all three will be on you as soon as your pet joins the fight. At level 7, you should be able to handle this. Leaving your pet guarding your med spot, after killing those 4 kobolds you can head west to where the cavern turns south and, facing south, pull from the three kobolds there. Be very careful of patrolling guards that appear if the people killing at the entrance leave.

At level 8 you can use the above tactics but continue deaper. You will get the feel for the place quickly. Whenever you are about to pull from a section you have never been to before, assume you will get one more than you see. They really come outta the woodwork once one of their kin is attacked.

General tips for all casters:
1) snare/root/engulfing darkness -- always, always, always cast this on the mob you are fighting in here unless you are absolutely confident your mob(s) won't get a chance to run
2) Always have gate memmed and ready. This spell *will* save your hide once you are past the front door. In the case where you are in the cavern to the north of the landing, often you will not be able to run out because a) someone has trained to the zone and the mobs are hanging around there having a poker game b) the people you saw killing the front guards have left and the guards have respawned.
3) If you have a pet, make a hot key for /pet report health
4) Necros: though this should be obvious, don't even think of using Fear unless you are running the other way. I actually saw a necro try to Reverse Kite in here. /em shakes his head in disbelief.
5) Pet casters: keep a short leash on your pets. Use '/pet guard here' liberally
6) And as standard courtesy, please shout/ooc if you create a train. Your fellow players will thank you for it.

Hope this helps.
Sandrax on Luclin
Groups, up to level 10
# Jun 05 2001 at 2:15 PM Rating: Decent
I would like to begin by remarking that Sandrax provides the most accurate information I have seen here.

I arrived with my team in the Warrens as a bard of the 4th circle, according to the League of Antonican Bards. I have advanced through the 10th circle now, and am continuing my press deeper towards the prince.

My team handedly slew both the foodmaster and smithy at the same time when we were all in our 9th season. We found ourselves later run out of our camp by trains of kobolds chasing other adventurers who were less than prepared for their visit.

I agree with Sandrax's advice. Those of us without the magics of Norath at our personal disposal can take heed to his words.

The best advice I can give to those young and enterprising visitors to this Kobold den follows:

1) Take your time. Dont leave the entrance until you all see greens who DON'T agro. If these less ruthless kobolds at the entrance still challenge you as you approach, you shouldn't risk moving the group deeper, keep pulling to the entrance.

2) Don't delay! Be ready to open a special can of whoop-*** when your victim starts to run. Even a snared or rooted kobold, or kobold engulfed in darkness, can ruin your day because he doesn't have to get far to attract undesired attention, and these spells are not foolproof. Save a big fast damage punch for when you need it.

More than many other places, this is a fun place to group up. Our group was quite sucessfull at clearing out 4-5 green blue and white kobolds, AND sometimes 1 or 2 yellows as well, at a time using area of effect spells and good communication between casters and melee types.

We didn't often find ourselves overwhelmed, though occasionaly an individual would find themselves running back from a bind point alone. (that means few if any trains)

This was often a more effective use of our time than trying to camp a single yellow/red camp. This is the sort of tactic that only works in groups though, and can lead to highly encumbered jogs back to sell.

I would also like to point out that having been KOS to the newbie guards on my arrival, I was dubious after learning my 6th song and was amiable by the time I learned my 8th. I was then able to ask the newbie guards for a key to the elevator for Paineel and shorten those runs to sell and unload loot.

Be safe and sever some kobolds,
Shayrah

Get yerself a group, brother! I am a 12th Season Ranger, and I was grouped just last eve with another 12 Ranger, an 11 Shaman, and 9, 11, and 12th Season Necromancers. We fought valiantly in the jails of the Warrens, slaying the Trainer, as well as their vicious Pit Fighters and the Jailer. It is a NECESSITY to have a group in this zone unless ye are of the 15th season or more. Find yerself a company of stout adventurers, friend, and bloody thy blade!
RE: Where to go?
# Apr 05 2001 at 7:01 PM Rating: Default
Quite simple... They aren't supposed to be there, at least not soloing. I have a Euridite friend who is your level. You really only have to stay in the front hall to gain xp. You just have to be prepared to zone or gate as soon as someone shouts train. With luck, some players will clear out the front room (usually just to meditate in peace), and you can safely pull from there. Once the Guards and rabid's don't agro you, it gets easy. I suggest starting on the princes side, as it is less confusing. With a group, or at 15, the foodmaster and smith are nice camps.

Strats for the Rat Room?
# Apr 03 2001 at 11:11 AM Rating: Default
I ventured into the rat room yesterday, and was attacked by some non-named kolbold. I was immediatly aggro'd by 8 rats. I killed the kolbold and a few rats, but had to zone due to the sheer annoyance factor. Any tips for how to avoid getting the rats attacking you when camping the packmaster?

Be careful with pets, and what not. The rats are something like level 6 (I believe, since I pulled a couple to the zone for somebody to kill, he said the were even) so if you do wish to use a pet, leave it inside the hall beside the rat room. Also, don't sit down in the room with a runt nearby :P And, of course, if the rats are exp green, they will agro if the frenzied rat or any kobolds agro you while inside their line of sight and agro range. You can walk in and walk right back out to get the frenzied rat(s) to follow you into the tunnel; if you don't get hit or attack them directly inside the other mobs' line of sight and agro range, then they won't pack. Same goes for any other camp. >8)

Dunno, hope that helps a bit.

The rats were deffinatly green to me. I was attacked by a wandering Kolbold and had a swarm of Rats on me. I was going to try to take out the Pack Master, but I am not sure how to do it unless I have some one to peel the rats off me. Either that, or I have to try and clear out the room.
RE: Strats for the Rat Room?
# Jun 03 2001 at 2:32 AM Rating: Default
I hunted the packmaster at 15th - got the frenzied rat to chase me around the corner and out of the other rats aggro range before killing him (anything that stuns/blinds/roots/snares is a big help here). Kept checking back (was on a circuit from Pit Fighters to Jailer & back again) and did the same then when the Pack Master popped. Popped him with an arrow, ran around the corner and back up the hall a bit then darkness, DoT, and melee to death with Harm Touch for the coup de' grace (I was PO'ed at him for taking so long to spawn).

My guess is that while the rats are extremely social they have lousy reaction time and awareness - as long as you or your target don't linger within their hearing you can draw off the frenzied or pack master then kill your prey outside of the aggro range. Just don't use anything that slows the target down on the intial pull or causes you to linger in the things aggro range too long (for casters I suggest a few throwing weapons and forgo the spells until later) and you should do reasonably well.

Unless of course your the wizard I saw that used an Firestorm to pull the packmaster...
/em shakes head and wonders how said person survived Sorcery 101 with all limbs intact

PS - the drachnids in Frionia seem to have the same problem. Can run my ranger right past the nasties (which all scowl and are ready to jump my rear) backs and as long and I don't stop (or get a lag spike) I don't get attacked.

First off, the GUARDS (not the Quest NPCS around) in the Paineel newbie garden are lvl 10. They will attack you only if they think they can beat you..since you're a lvl 8 they attack of course. I play there with my cleric who was lvl 8 worshiper of Prexus as well, and I got past no problem. You have to run straght down the middle of the entrace...as you know the guards are on both sides..just run down the middle..and DO NOT STOP. You should make it through with no problem at all..I do it all the time..of course now, after killing so many Kobold..I'm apprehensive there now, so no need to sneak. Be warned however, there's an NPC for the Shadow Knight Epic who roams the area..he's NOT on the Heretic faction..and will attack anyone, regardless of level. I know, because I took my lvl 52 wiz there and he still had the nerve to attack me. Rooted the pet, and Ice Comet his @$$ and that was that. Also as a favor to everyone trying to get to the zone, I attempted to kill the guards there and what I found out was...they are NOT killable while they are guarding the entrance. I tried to Ice Comet them along with many other types of spells..and they resisted them all..and didn't budge. However, if they leave the spot, i.e. chasing someone around, they are killable. Hope this information helps..good luck to you.

This sounds mostly correct although I believe you pointed out there are two people now upstairs directly over the entrance where it comes out into the newbie field, one is azzar habbib and he is the one attacking you and alot of other people, he was added with the opening of the warrens. He is around the 30's or so and does have a pet, he is on heretic faction and highly aggressive and at 52 you probably would not have had to much problem with him. He also gives out a couple new quests for and complains about his dreadful hats. The other person that is also up there is durek bloodpool he is for the shadowknight epic quest, he is on the same faction as many of the other epic people and is apprehensive to everyone accept a few that have done a few things for there epics and raised that faction. At 52 he would probably clean your clock rather quickly if you decided to attack him by yourself but he won't attack you he does not have a pet ever that I have noticed. He has of course been up there since the epic weapons were introduced several months ago. Just thought I would point this out as your post seems to kind of get the two of them mixed up a bit. As I have never seen durek bloodpool ever attack anyone or wonder around he is always sitting in the one spot where as his new found friend up there will come straight through the walls to whack on people he doesn't care for. The two skeleton guards posted at the entrance have a very low agro radius and are conning around level 8 haha till they start hitting you for 100+, you can get them to attack you but you have to wonder pretty darn close to them, so most people don't have a problem getting by them all though they can and do attack there about as atentative as the kelethin guards pretty much have to sit in there laps to get them to react. These guards will also give you a key for the elevator to the city if you can get to amiable with the heretics.

here is my thought....somebody has opened the door and let hat guy (azzar habbib)out...this is bad because he KOS good folk and he has trouble getting back to his spot inside the overlook...only way to get by then is invis or have an evil friend pull atrain of fire bettles over and get hat guy out in the newbie yard...and i know the guards actually killed you...hat guy shares his hate list with them and they aggro you...at least that was my experence on test...good luck

I am a Shaman, age doesn't matter right now. But I must say this. A shaman at level 8 does not have the spell invis. A shaman aquires that spell at level 29. I have a lev 8 mag (eur) I run him right through the middle as most people have stated. the first ime I did this I made it to the middle of the court yard and turned to con guards. I found that i did the right thing by running and the agro range for the guards are extremely small. The guy upstairs is very hateful so make sure not to linger around the entrance.

Wiz don't get invis till 16, a lvl 15 shaman whould only have invisible to animals, as they do not get invis till 29. Though I would think with SoW and knowing where you were going, a shaman should be able to get to the warrens.

I am a level 11 High Elf Paladin of Tunare. I have absolutely no problem with the guards, they actually con dubious to me last I checked. Unfortunately that does not apply to Azzar Habib. He will actually go out of his way to kill me. One time I spent the better part of a morning trying to leave the Paineel newbie area. He would cast spells on me from his room above the entrance. He did not bother anyone else that day, except me seemingly. The only way in or out for me is Invisibility or SoW. I like fighting in the Warrens but I cannot leave without help.

Heh heh heh.

Ye are all quite amusin'. There is nae a special way tae get past the guards, gents, besides runnin' yer happy little **** off. Tha's right, just run right down the middle o' the entrance and veer to the right toward the Warrens. If ye hear them aggro on ye, jes' keep runnin' until ye zone intae the Warrens. Yer fine.

Havin' a shaman friend grant ye the Spirit o' the Wolf is a wonderful help as well.

Heed this warnin', though, mates: The skellies don't always remain th' same level. If'n someone kills 'em, they can respawn at RED to an 18th season adventurer. Trust me. I know. I died twice before I realized wha' the hell was happenin'.

Future Zones on Odus

I remember when the Warrens was just a rumor and it did finally come into existence. From what I've read, Stonebrunt Mtns are in development for release later this year..which I think is great. I play 2 Erudite characters, and IMO it's about darn time. Odus needs more zone that would make people want to come visit and hunt there. Unlike most Erudites, that leave there as soon as their born because of the fact that the lighting of Toxx is terrible, it has NO paths at all, and there are so few creatures there to hunt. It's really awful. When you look at a map you will also see these "zones" on most maps as Stonebrunt Mtns, The Grand Plateau, and Barren Coast, and the Vasty Deep. Odus has so much potential...I hope it only continues to get better.

I think its funny that everyone leaves Odus... I started a Erudite Mage to play with and I LOVE Tox Forest... the lighting isn't THAT bad (nothing a lil Gamma Correction can't fix) and its always EMPTY! *shrug* Maybe its just me

Toxxulia forest is ok, yes. You can find enough snakes, skunks, spiders, kobs, skels, and whatever else to get you to level 10, fairly quick. The thick fog effect and the fact that the majority of the mobs are dynamic, and wander, are what turns people off the zone, imo.

I do have to agree that it was a much needed zone, in regards to Odus, though. The Warrens bridges the gap between Tox and Kerra Isle, if you were looking to hunt cats, or pick up some gear there, without leaving the continent. And I'm also looking forward to seeing the Stonebrunt Mountains, and hope against hope they will further develop Odus. =P

Amen. Tox isn't really a bad place, it's just not as easy pickin's as some other newbie zones. The common ground clutter on the Erudin side is pretty good to get you to level 4 or so; after that, you can cross the bridge and track down briar snakes, skeletons, and kobalds for some pretty good experience. The kobald camps are nice for levels 5-7; pretty easy with a partner, and the loot isn't bad. Minor gems, bags, boxes, and so forth. Lots of merchants (for the good Erudites) right in the forest, so you don't have to zone to unload your loot. There's even a vendor selling malachite and tiny daggers.

I've never seen the abandoned heretic hut camped, but it's a great place for levels 8-12 in a small group. Four skeletons, slightly higher than normal skeletons. If you're in the right place at the right time, there are a few flittering wisps and pixies (lvl 15-17 or so) in the forest as well.

I can only hope that Stonebrunt is a nice mid-level zone with some decent static camps and a few wanderers...something along the lines of Butcherblock, only higher levels. And please, some natural enemy of the Peacekeepers so we can all raise faction with them...they're so exclusive.

Personally I liked the fact that the characters wandered more often rather than having set paths. Guess it's just me...

It will on the greens (and they will still aggro on you if you are meditating too close to them). There are a few mobs there way in the back that will be blue. Of course those mobs are the ones that are constantly camped, but oh well.
