Iceclad Ocean is where you'll find the Icy Fingers -- a chain of small iceberg islands, along with a massive ocean which separate the continent of Velious from the other continents of Norrath.

This area is home to a group of Gnome explorers from Ak'Anon; Tserrina's magnificent Tower of Frozen Shadow; a small representation of the Kromrif frost giants of Kael; and the Snowfangs, a clan of gnolls in constant battle with the turtles of the ocean, Lodizal and Coruduth.

I am a level 33 DE SK getting very bored of OT, as you read this i'm at least level 34/35. Think i should come here for better exp or stick to kunark? also am i too low for ice forged shackles quest?

I too got very bored of OT at lvl 36. All of my friends told me it was too dangerous at Velous and to stick to Kunark. *L* Well I ignored their advice as usual and set sail from Kunark and headed to Velous. Boy am I glad I did! I'm making very nice exp here killing cougers and despite the fact that they don't drop coin, they more then make up for it by dropping nice earings occasionaly which you can sell at a hefty price. =)

Does anyone have an information on the manna batteries you can purchase at the gnoll camp just off the boat.

There are several different class batteries ranging from 1-5, I'm not worried about the price as it gets pretty steep as you go up in class, just how do they work and if they are worth investing in.

Hunting Guide

Not to add to the increase of hunting in an area I thoroughly enjoy, but stick to the ice flows.. the chain of ice on the sides of the islands. The Guardians tend to swim under or around these things and not go agro to yourself whilst medding and the wandering creatures on the island seem to stop short of coming down onto them. This will allow a much greater range by which to plot your hunts. Also keep in mind dire wolves are much much easier than dervs guardians or giants. A enchanter mage or any other combo can effectively hunt these instead of cougars taking down yellows and reds consistently. But dont try the same with dervs giants or guardians they are just not worth it in the end ouch..

Howdy! I just had a great day in the lands. I am quading kiting cougurs and BAM a griphy POPs on my head. I kill it and get a talon that I hear is for the Link Claw quest. Can anyone help me get started. What NPC do I talk to. Thanks much.

Hello, all. The latest chapter of Edmund's in-depth hunting guides visits the gateway to the continent of Velious--the forbidding Iceclad Ocean. Sit tight, boys and girls--it's going to be a bumpy ride.

(1) The journey.
Well, there are actually two ways to get over here. The standard method is to sit at the relatively-new dock in North Ro and wait for the barrel barge to come by, then hop on. After zoning in, the barge will loop by a smallish island. Hop off, cross to the big dock on the other side, and board the Icebreaker when she arrives. The Icebreaker crosses about 3/4 the length of the map, dropping you off at the gnome igloos.
The second method is to port over to the Dragon Ring on the last island. This will put you near the zone line to the Eastern Wastes. You also stand a good chance of getting steamrollered here, because some dangerous mobs treat the Velious portals like great whopping vending machines which dispense adventurers, only without needing pocket change. If you gate in, stay alert.

2. The Hunt.
OK, hunting is an awfully-risky proposition here for a number of reasons. Let's go into them:
(1) Melee-types suffer the indignities of being difficult to bind especially hard here. The closest bind spots for tanks are as follows:
-East Freeport, two boat rides and two zones away.
-Thurgadin, two large 30-35+ level zones away, and not good if you've been hunting dwarves.
-Kael Drakkal, one large 30-35+ level zone away, and definitely not good *unless* you've been hunting dwarves and/or wurms extensively.
(2) The 25th-level monk syndrome. OK, OK, this is not a dig at 25th-level monks, per se. Some of my best friends are monks (come to think of it, one of my alts *is* a monk). So, why that particular level/class combination? Allow me to elucidate. I know a lot of you are excited about the new continent. Really excited. Unable to wait to get your hands on ph4t l3wt. Occasionally, you will see a solo, way too low to be anywhere near the zone, trying to pull cougars. In this particular case, it was a 25th-level monk, looking for (what else?) a cougar claw earring. He would pull to the igloos, get in over his head, feign death, the cougar would inevitably join someone else's battle, they'd kill it, he'd loot. Rinse and repeat. He spent the entire evening inadvertently training people and yelling for help when his FD failed. He flattened me once with three cougars he'd pulled into my battle. That, ladies and gentlemen, is the only time I've ever had to petition someone on my server. Look out for this type of player. If he's training you, move on. Eventually, he'll get his clock cleaned, get the picture, and build up his strength (and, hopefully, wisdom) elsewhere.
(3) No guards. That's right--nobody to bail your butt out when stuff like the monk's hyper-training fails. You're on your own. Very Hobbesian, really.

Now that you've been warned about the dangers, here are your playmates:
(1) Snow cougars (28-36). The grunts of the area. They're configured like monks, only without the special round kicks and whatnot. In short, they block. They hit pretty hard--into the 60's and low 70's. Drops are a bit stingy. They never have coin, and drop one of three types of pelt--ruined (no use that I know of, and sells for 4 cp), medium quality (NO DROP, used for cougarskin boots quest), and high quality (droppable, used for copper coldain insignia ring quest). Their two specials are the Bloodstained Fang (a 9/33 piercer, not usable by INT-casters) and the Cougar Claw Earring (AC and STAT earring, roughly comparable to an Obsidian Bead Hoop or Forest Loop).
(2) Dire Wolves (30-36)--tougher and slightly harder-hitting than the cougars. Much higher aggro radius, too. Drop various hides.
(3) Shadow Guardians (30-35)--the local analogues of the snow dervishes you'll find all over the Eastern Wastes. Very difficult for a tank to solo until about 40. They hit hard, fast, and consistent. Rarely, they'll drop a Chill Dagger or a Frozen Mantle. Otherwise, they drop nothing (no coin, either).
(4) Frost Giants (33-37)--depending on which side you chose, this could be pretty good with an upper-30's group. They hang out on the last island, near the bridge leading to the Eastern Wastes. Do not attempt to solo unless you can Root, DoT, nuke, Fear, and/or Snare. Fairly quick death for solo tanks, but they're not terribly observant while guarding the bridge, so sneaking around is pretty easy.
(5) Gnomish pirates (30-50)--shame on you! How could you even think of putting these poor little guys to the sword? But, in case you do, your best bets are probably the lone gnome that greets the barrel barge at the near end of the zone, and maybe those two guys that sit out on the ice floes between the igloo island and the Tower island.

Specials--There are two. Midnight (32nd), a rare cougar, jet black, who drops an item for a quest, and the pulsating icestorm (34th or so), a rare shadow guardian which, I believe, has the same drop tables as its more common cousins.

Finally, two good pull spots exist for cougars and whatnot--the igloos on the first island (as a marker, not because the guards will help you--they won't) and Balix Darkeyes' tent on the Tower island (he won't help you, either). Both are out of the way of the mob paths.

Enjoy, and watch out for trains.

Quick tip on hunting near Balix's tent. If you are a druid, do not change into wolf form near him; he doesn't take kindly to it and he hits in the 300 range. I believe it is safe to approach him if you are already in wolf form, though. It can ruin your day to be out pulling three cougars back to your friendly druid partner and find that Balix took offense to his choice of disguises...

Jijuna, you don't seem to be very smart for one who is deemed a 'Scholar'. If you would have actually used your brain a little then you would have realized that the person was saying that he/she had grouped with a *Dark Elf SK*. Dumbass.

A Guide to Iceclad
# Feb 16 2001 at 12:57 PM Rating: Excellent
I've been hunting Iceclad for a few levels now (34-35) and I thought I'd share what I've learned so far.

You can start thinking about coming here at 29, BUT you will have to be grouped at this level, no question. There are two main areas that you will generally be able to find groups in here:

Igloos.
When you first come off the boat, to your right you will find the igloos. This a gnome NPC camp where you can sell, buy etc. MOBS dont wander in here, so it's a good spot to rest. Keep in mind that the gnome NPCS will NOT save you from cougars, etc. If you get in over your head, you better find some friendly PCs. The open area next to the igloos is a good place for people 29-32 to hunt cougars. I'd suggest at least 3 person groups if you are in this level range. You will see cougars almost exclusively here, with the odd (quite rare) shadow guardian. These are quite a bit tougher than the cougars.

Balix:
Balix Misteyes is a friendly NPC gnoll shaman who you will find on the second island. His camp is another popular spot, as MOBS don't wander through it. I wouldnt go here until you are at least 33, or in a strong group. Balix has a few quests, as do the gnolls in the camp that is nearby. If you camp at Balix, you will be fighting 3 things: snow cougars, dire wolves and Shadow Guardians. I'd suggest sticking to the cougars; almost as much xp, they dont hit as hard and you get better loot (rare drop cougar claw earrings). The pelts from cougars and dires are quest items for armor from the gnoll camp, but the armor is generally crappy and NO DROP). Garou is an extremely rare, extreemely dangerous spawn in the woods between Balix and the Tower; don't take him on unless you are sure you can, he's over 40, melees in the 80s and casts.

The third, much larger island is home to a variety of roamers including the familiar dires, cougars and shadow guardians. You will also find Frost Giant Scouts and Elites. Killing these is possible for groups in their mid-high 30s, but you will take faction hits with the Giants. Don't hunt them unless you want xp, their loot is pathetic, save for the odd velium weapon (if you see an armed one, it will be MUCH harder to kill)There's alot of open room here for kiters, and the southern shore in particular is a good spot with very few MOBS walking through it. There is a zone on the wester end of this island (the bridge), but it's a long run.

Anyway, that's what I've learned so far in IceClad. This zone is spectacular for experience for ppl in their early to mid 30s, just don't count on much loot.

While on the icebreaker enroute to the iceclad dock I was deposited on an iceberg on the left side (I was in the process of being booted) I contacted a GM and he said to shout for the dock location (igloos) and start the journey. I proceeded to the top of the iceberg to check out the area. A bag sat on the peak. Seaworthy planking. It took me a half hour of swimming and iceberg hopping to get to the igloos. I imagine if u left the igloos and searched the iceberg peaks u may eventually find it again. I dont know if its random or a set location. Sorry...I dont have the coordinates. So the planking (no drop) sits in the bank until I can match it to the quest. What is the quest?

This zone, as well as much of Velious is paradise for druids. There are many different tactics that you can use. Remeber panic animal? Lvl 1 10 mana spell that you stopped using 30 lvls ago? Break that badboy out. That paired with snare will make life very easy here. I've personally been playing with charm again and on the cougars it is AWESOME! I can usually go 3 or 4 rounds before charm will break and when paired with fear your pet will never die. Big key with charm is to make sure you snare your pet first that way if it does break you have ample time to recast. I've also played around with quadkiting some..but if you catch any lag it's all over but the crying. I suggest charm/snare/fear tactics as I can usually take out 3 or 4 mobs before ever having to stop for med time. Also at 35 I am soloing red mammoths in EW using this same tactic though I had to bump up to a higher lvl charm as the direwolves were too high lvl for the 120mana charm to work on. Velious has renewed a love for my druid that I haven't had in a very long time. Good hunting all

Well... My biggest problem with killing giants is that there are alot of SUPER quest items that you can get at high lvls through King Tovorax. If you are an int caster I would strongly suggest that you try to not make the giants mad so that you can get these super sweet items. Of course I am trying to avoid making the dwarves mad either because they are considered a "good" race. So stick with making the dragons mad if you can. Or just kill stuff that gives no faction changes. Kill cougars and maybe go into the Tower of the Frozen Shadow to kill some other mobs. That may be best. If you are extremely high lvl (lvl 50+) I would just suggest that you leave velious alone and hunt in some of the more dangerous dungeons of kunark.
