Toxxulia is the forest that separates Erudin from Paineel. It is home to many different types of creatures, the most noticeable and prominent of which is probably the kobolds. With the Warrens so close in proximity, the Erudites of Odus are in a constant state of battle with these pesky beasts.

The Kerrans would be the other creatures of note. They have a small village in the outskirts of the forest and generally keep to themselves.

Located in the western part of the continent, Toxxulia also serves as a gateway into the Buried Sea with a network of tunnels leading to the Barren Coast of Odus.

Just an FYI to the new people...as with many other stones in PoK this one is not label Toxx, it is the Paineel stone on the evil side of PoK north west corner, next to the Gunthak Stone.

Frustrating that even after many centuries these stones couldn't be properly named....tsk tsk tsk.

The PoK stones go to the newbie zones associated with them, so actually both the Paineel stone and the Erudin stone on the good side go to Toxx- the Paineel one drops you in the SW corner next to Paineel, and the Erudin one drops you in the NE near (surprise, surprise) Erudin, though both are well out of aggro range of any mobs.

As pathetic as it is, the new maps have no labels, and some of them have bad coloring which is confusing. The map to this zone is just as bad, although it says it is on the Eastern side, what it really should say is South Eastern corner.

I have to disagree with the previous message, having leveled up two Necros to lvl 10 in the Tox forest in the last month, I have to say that I haven't seen a better place to level up in the whole game. Go there at lvl 4 and fight. He is right that there are some high MoBs that can kill you, but after a brief time you get used to /con'ing what is around you, you have figured out their pathing, and you stay away from them. If you /con something, it is red and it doesn't like you ...? Breeds in a healthy caution. I was never once killed by the mobs that were mentioned. I knew they were there, I /con'ed them occasionally to see if they were getting friendlier as I leveled (they weren't) and I just didn't go close to them.

What no one is talking about is that the Tox Forest is one of the most profitable newbie spots in the game. Profitable although you can't really intentionally farm it. Just being in the Forest and killing what is around will insure that you will have a chance to whack some things that drop objects of value. One of the Necros earned 320 pp on FV and the other 650 pp on AR in a week of leveling up to lvl 10. After the first day, almost never died. I was very satisfied with my experience in the Tox Forest.

As a side note, make sure that your "Clip Plane" is set to 100% in the Tox Forest. From certain places in the Zone you can see a looong way with it set that high.

Ok, let's get a few things straight. First, Toxx was never a great newb zone... it's easy to get lost or turned around, xp is not that great, etc. I remember this well from my baby necro oh so long ago (now a 51 necro, and climbing).

I just started an erudite cleric and decded to go old school on leveling her (Toxx -> Warrens -> who knows?), and let me just say...

This zone is the most INSANE newbie zone in the game now

On the Erudin side, there's a level 45 skunk (yes, skunk) that seems to be KOS to everything. I had to bring my 59 druid over to drop it, after it killed my cleric.

Yikes, ok, so I go to the Paineel side where it's safer (ha ha), and while fighting kobolds Fittorin Bladespur (lvl 33, KOS to everybody) ganks me again. I had no chance.

I mean, come on. This is a really pathetic zone, and it's stupid becasue it means that baby erudites are really at a disadvantage unless they leave their own newbie zone, which in my mind ends up detracting from the diversity of the game, becasue everybody's in Shadeweaver/FoB and then PC and then HHK etc. etc. etc.

Shame, I think I'll just take her into the Warrens nnow that she's level 4, since I can keep her alive in there Smiley: disappointed

I don't know the loc, but starting from Erudin just head South..cross the river until you hit either the shore or a wall, just follow either one a little ways until you find the Spires.

Or if your coming from Paineel just follow the wall right for about 15 seconds. The spires will be right near the wall just a few meters past the Kobold camp.

The nexus spires in Toxx are located at approx. location –1500, -1000. Just run up to the npc standing in the middle of the spires and mumble something about wanting to journey to luclin and you should get a no-drop non-rent item to hold on to. Be warned, the spires port about every 15 mins, and sods law states that you always arrive just after the last portSmiley: snore

Took me down to 1 bub of health quickly, luckily i had SoW up and zoned to Paineel. At level 40, this rogue conned dark blue to me. If anyone has any information regarding this new menace, please post it. I'm goning to be hunting for this jerk for some well deserved revenge.

Excellent place for Starting Wizards
# Jul 01 2001 at 4:09 PM Rating: Excellent
Everyone complains about Tox, I love it.

I always level my Wizards, Clerics, etc... here.

Why?

No competition for spawns. LOADS of money, and equipment.

1-4

This is the toughest part, just stick close to the Starting City and kill everything in sight. By the time you are level 4 you can afford all your level 1 spells, and a level 4 if you are good.

Keep an eye out for: Heretic Prophet is casting.

If you see it zone. No if, and, or but's zone. You will die if you are below level 5 and even then it's chancy. So save yourself a corpse recovery, and zone.

4-6

Things are easier, kill everything in sight, but don't cross the bridge yet. Stay on this side of the river, and just kill everything. Around late level 5 when your combat skills have maxed for your level cross the river and kill wandering kobolds, I recommend the sentries, and kill any scouts you see. Turn the caps into the abandoned heretic pet, one of his random rewards is a gem worth 11pp. If you can't use 11pp as a starting character, let me know. :D

As soon as you can, buy a fishing pole, and bait. Whenever you need to heal and med, do so by the river.

Few, if any mobs roam the river banks so it is safe medding, and while you are healing/medding.

Fish!

I can't stress this enough. Fish. You are medding anyway, put that stupid "Gems" away and make some plat.

Yes I said plat, fish here are greengill salmon, and a stack of 20 sell for 9 gold, and change depending on charisma and faction. So 20 bait, which cost you all of 4 silver, gives a return of how much? One fish just paid for all your bait.

Note: Never, ever sell to the merchant whose house is next to Kerra Isle, and before Elial Brooks, he scrimps. Buys items off you for half their worth. Always go to Emil, good merchant there. ;)

Late 5-8

Kill Kobolds, run between Kobold camps 1 and 2, this will be marathon 1 and 2. Kill everything. Loot everything. By now you should have loads of containers from these kobolds, use em all. Kill every fire beetle you see. Those eyes are 2 silver a pop, and they usually have 2 on them. So you just made a half a gold.

If at any time someone offers to group with you, don't accept. Unless they are: a)Killing the Skellies outside Paineel, b)Killing Elial Brooks, c) Killing Alglith.

In other words you can solo this place like it's going out of style.

8-9 (or 10, if your patient)

Ok so your Level 8, feels good doesn't it? ;P

Ok you officially have nukes now. The only 3 spells you need are, Lesser Shielding, Shock of Ice, and Fire Bolt in that order. Everything else is eye candy.

Your two targets at level 8 are Elial Brooks, and Alglith. You should know where Elial Brooks is by now, and as for Algith he is the guy fishing by the bank to your left when you cross the bridge.

This is marathon #2, both these guys are on a 6 minute spawn cycle, so here's what you do:

First nuke Elial Brooks, he is easier, as he will con blue to you at 8, and will be easier to recover from this battle so you can hurry on to Algith.

Stand as far down the bank as you can from Elial, con his pet. If it's blue, you are lucky. You get triple exp. Once for Elial, once for the pet, and then you get exp turning in the Heretic Bones to the Magician guildleader. Not to bad, you also getting chump change for turning in the bones.

Treat both spawns the same at level 8. Always O'Keil's yourself, back as far as you can and still be on level terrain then let loose with a Fire Bolt ( 45 dmg for 40 mana), then use Shock of Ice (35 dmg for 30 mana) and Fire (15 dmg for 10 mana) while meleeing until he is dead. With Elial you can usually melee the pet to death, but if it's a blue then Shock of Ice the little bugger.

Usually end up with 3 bulbs health, and 2 bulbs mana with Elial and a blue Pet.

With Alglith who will con even at 8, this one is tough. But doable. Usually 2 health, and little mana, I sometimes had to melee him but he was always in run mode so it's not to bad. Gives you some needed practice swinging that staff. ;)

Fish while you heal up, stack of 20 fish from here sells for 1pp. ;) If you can't afford spells while leveling up in Tox something's wrong with you.

Just repeat.

Be level 9 in 4 hours. You can continue doing this marathon until 10 easy, then goto Paineel and take out the skeletons just inside the city, and also the abadoned heretic pet. Will take you to 11 if you are really desperate. But Wisp Island is one boat trip away from here, where you can make level 12 easy. :)

But before stopping in Wisp Island, I recommend going to Quenos getting: 2 +3 Int earrings from the Qubert quest. While your in the Quenos Catacombs pick up a +5 HP ring from a mob down there, I forget which one (hey it can't hurt). Then do the band of Rodcet Nife quest. Getting, of course a Band of Rodcet Nife, if you put everything into intelligence starting this character then you will have 151 Int by level 9 or even 10 if you were patient. Not too shabby, and it didn't cost you a thing. Incidentally a Band of Rodcet Nife identifies as to being a Ring of Channelling, which sounds appropriate for a Wizard don't you think?

And they say Odus is worth nothing.

Ha!

Quick Recap on what you can look forward to in Tox:

No fighiting for spawns.

Fishing: 20 Greengill Salmon = 1pp; cost to you 20 bait at 4 cp each.

No fighting for spawns.

Gloves of the Gatecaller (AC 3, magic); cost to you nothing. Unless the magician is a scrooge.

Your quick stop in Quenos should entail you to:

Gold Stud Earrings (+3 Int) [X2]; cost to you: nothing.

Ring +5 Hit Points; cost to you: nothing.

Ring of Channelling (Band of Rodcet Nife, +3 Int and +10 Mana), cost to you: 1 Levl 1 mule shadow knight

But this is for all those Patriotic Erudites who always leave home too early. :P

Level 30 Wizard now and still enjoy running thru Tox Forest to get spells, sell, and bank in Erudin.

I sometimes drop by Elial Brook and drop him a level 29 nuke... Instant Kill. I give Aglithin a Nuke as well when I need a fishing pole. I have never bought a fishing pole since level 12.

And we all know Runggup. If he happens to be hanging around the bridge while running back to Erudin from the Wizard spires, I give him a nuke too.

I started a dark elf and couldn't find my way around Nek Forest even with ultravision. I started an ogre and got hopelessly lost in the Ferrott. Tox isn't that bad a place, really.

You'll learn to use /loc. You'll learn to appreciate True North (Erudin is at the far north of the zone). You'll learn to use Sense Summoned (Jalen Goldsinger stands outside a caster supply hut where you can buy and sell with amiable faction...the merchant sells tiny daggers and malachite, as well as some research tools.

The pixies drop a good bit of money and some lower level research pages, runes, and words, so it's a good place to spend some time when you come back for your level 16 spells.

The library is great; Erudin is the easiest city I've been in as far as navigating goes. No accidentally running into the "seedy" part of town or falling out of the city altogether.

The two kobald camps are also great experience for levels 5-7; you can solo a camp easily, and kill passing skeletons or briar snakes for a bigger experience boost from time to time. The kobalds drop bags, boxes, minor gems, and alcohol, so it's a decent moneymaker as well.

By level 7 or 8, you can move over to Erud's Crossing and kill snakes, moving up to bats and then willowisps. The loot on all these is really good for the level, and it's a nice tight concentration of mobs to kill. Erudites start out with amiable (Quellious) or warmly (Prexus) faction, depending on religion, so the cats will buy your loot for a fair sum.

Before the Paineel zone was implemented, evil Erudites had to slum it by using that hut as their guild hall. When the trainers moved into their new digs, they left the bones behind.

That hut is not a bad solo spot for your 'advanced newbie' cleric or paladin.

No, the pets do not have a faction associated with them. (They will, in fact, consider 'indifferently' to you regardless of your race or class, as all NPC pets will, regardless of your faction with the pet's master. Until you start attacking, that is...)

And I don't think they can be used for the cap quest. I'm pretty sure that quest only works with the skeletons right next to the Paineel zone. They are also 'indifferent' /cons.
It's not that bad here...
# Mar 13 2001 at 3:04 AM Rating: Default
by Jota lvl 7;
I started a Maginician in Erudin and after learning to use /loc - all went well. I can't figure-out why so many people hate the Toxx forest, but I went from lvl 1 to lvl 7 in about 14hrs of play. (If that sucks, then I am "all wet?) The spell selection here is great, and the bone chip quest makes some good $ in a hurry (and it's repeatable). Only cross the bridge to the south section after lvl 6 or the kobold gangs will be too difficult for most classes. Erudin is an easy city to navigate in (provided you have seen the maps) - so hopefully some of you will agree that "it not that bad here!" Make your fortune off of decayed skeletons as a newb, and you'll be spanking kobold shammies in no time!

Heretic pets

For erudite necros, the heretic pets are a GREAT source of experience. Solo you shouldn't attack a pet until 8th level. At 8th a necro can now cast "Bone Walk", the first strong skeletal pet. Also, the necro will be able to strike the heretic pet with "Ward Undead", an excellent direct damage vs. undead spell. Groups can approach the heretic pets sooner but be prepared to lose a pet summoned with "Leering Corpse".

Heretic pets do not give great loot. You will always gain a rusty mining pick worth 9 copper. Quite often you will bone chips. Every 4th or 5th heretic pet will be wielding a different weapon that may be of slightly more value. (I have looted a rusty halberd once.) Yet, loot isn't the reason for killing these. Excellent XP with no faction hit and a guaranteed spawn every 6 or 7 minutes helps. In a forest with little of worth, these will give you levels quick.
One good thing about this zone!
# Jan 31 2001 at 10:17 PM Rating: Decent
The best thing about Toxxulia (I hunted here almost exclusively until 8th or so) is the fishing. As soon as you can, take up fishing here - it is one of the great secrets in the game. You do not get frest fish in Toxxulia, rather Greengill salmon which are worth twice as much...good loot for newbies. Also, just to the left of the bridge heading across to Paineel, there is an NPC who hates everyone named Aglthin Dasmore. Hates those from Erudin and Paineel. He's a bit tough to fight, as he hits very hard, but if you kill him, you get his fishing rod, which is a Lore Item which you can fish with and I believe is unbreakable.

There you have it - Toxxulia Forest: Fisherman's Paradise.

Ok, 'Evil' Erudites, you ahve gotten to level 5 in Paineel, and you decide its time to wander into Tox. You'll find the kobolds are not aggro to you - a word to the wise - try to kee it that way. Whack the low level ones until they have been dubious for a while, THEN STOP. You will find that once the kobolds go KOS on you, you will never be able to meditiate or rest. NEcros and clerics use that level 1 sense the dead to find the skeletons and kill them. They are good xp, and just common enough that an untwinked level 5-7 can find one after they med up. I thought I was KOS in Erudin and had to stay in Tox, but I ended up being only dubious as a necro, so if you dont like this plan, you can do what everyone else does and go to Blackburrow. However, if you like soloing, try this out.

This used to be really, really good advice. However, since they added the Warrens, I'm pretty sure the kobalds are aggressive starting right from the beginning. If not, then keep trying this trick (if you don't want to fight in the warrens, that is).

After a raid in the Hole at level 51, we all congregated near the druid rings in Toxx to split up the loot. When I won an item, I sat down to watch everyone else roll, and a level 2 kobald runt came up and started whacking me <sigh>. You just can't ever run from a bad reputation.

The Paineel Skeletons
# Aug 24 2000 at 3:13 AM Rating: Default
You can usually find two skeletons inside the tunnel to paineel in the tox forest, and usually an abandoned heretic pet just outside. These are a great spawn to camp for levels 5-8 as a small group, and slightly higher soloing. A cleric in the group makes this spawn brilliant for xp. Like everywhere in this area, the loot is not brilliant. You get the usual bone chips (great for necros) and a couple of near-worthless pickaxes. Occasionally other weapoms are dropped, too. A small note of courtesy is that these skeletons are the ones you hand in useless cloth caps from kobold scouts, so if people need to hand caps in, go on, let them. Some people think there is a faction hit for these skeletons but I can assure you this is not true. This spawn gets a little tedious after a while, but if you're not into the crowds at Qeynos, you can stay a little longer.

Not a quest, but the loot is good!!
If you can track and are between the lvls 19 to 22, then this is the place for you.

You have to out towards the river but not across but the in area between spawns willowwisps and Pixies. The pixies can be tracked and hunted for exp and good loot, sometimes as high as a plat or more. Willowwisps seem to alternate spawn with pixies and may be place holders for them.

Usually you find no more than 2 on tracking at same time.

Of course willowwisps drop lightstones.
My ranger cleaned up on loot and exp here, going from lvl 20 to near 22 very quickly.

This is drudge work though, so bring a friend to chat with. :)

Willowisps you sell the lightstones for pp, and pixies are level 19-20.

He had said the willowisps were the placeholders of the pixies anyway.

Rungupp is a level 9 Troll Shaman, part of a quest from Erudin. Very dangerous to newbies and likes to hang out around the bridge.

Rungupp spawns not near the bridge, but actually in the southwest(southeast maybe) corner of the zone, there is actually a little platform for him its kind of wierd, how did I get near him you say?... Well we Evil Erudites, (well at least the necros probly the others) are not kos to im.

Rungupp likes to cast blind, however it is still possible to escape him if you strafe to make sure you aren't being blocked up against a tree, and you know where the erudin gates are

However... If it is hopeless type /L when you are blind, even though you may be blind you can still chat and type. when you become unblind (ie: when you respawn from your death) you will just have to go back to your corpse. Don't panic when you get blinded just calmly hit / and then L and pray to your diety.

He had blinded two of three of us at one point. We continued to attack until he was killed.

Erudites, leave this place as soon as you can.. or go to paineel and use their newbie area. Toxx is truely awful... its dark, its dank, and there's very little to kill here. You'll level MUCH faster over in Qeynos. If you must hunt here, there are a veriety of common newbie criters to kill, but before you go hunting get the /loc of the entrance and WRITE IT DOWN, 'cause you wil get lost when you have to run from something at low levels. if you're foolish enough to stay here past lvl 4, head accross the bridge and fight kobolds at one of the 2 camps there, but beware of the troll shaman that roams the southern isle... she has a tendancy to dark you before you even see her and then procede to beat you senseless.

For sure, I am surprised that not every post says the same thing. Toxx forest is a zone where a DE couldn't see his hand in front of his face at night, just think what that means for a human. Hunting here is like putting on your grotesque mask backwards, stupid and it makes you blind. Plus, now there is also Paineel to contend with for all the "good" Erudites, and Erudin guards, for all the "bad" ones. Just take Nakano K'shynn's advice and get to Qeynos.

In general, you want to watch out for Rungupp (the troll shaman), the Heretic Prophet (an evil cleric, about level 3, but the guards won't fight her so you must zone) and the Skeletons (level 5-6). There are various types of Kobolds around, but they very rarely go aggro on you. There are also some poachers roaming the area who con aggro to Erudites. The skeletons are the worst, as they are very aggressive (aggro).

There seem to be three areas to north (Erudin) side of the river to hunt. One is near the Druid ring. Another is immediately around the city entrance and on the hill to the west of it. A third is on some hills near the coast (I think this is the best; I didn't see any skeletons there, but the Heretic prophet does pass through there).

If you can, hunt the newbie zone inside Paineel until you are about level 3-4. My paladin of Prexus had no problem getting past the skeleton miners in the entrance tunnel (they conned indifferent), although I chickened out after I saw the guards at the entrance to the newbie zone conned Threatening. My Erud wizard (agnostic) had no problem hunting here, although the merchants in town wouldn't sell to me.

Anybody know why they put a fog bank in this zone? Or does Verant just not like Erudites?

Actually, though, if you are a Heretic, you are KOS in Qeynos, unless this has changed. I doubt it has changed. Erudites are not considered an evil race, but rather neutral. That means that no place likes you much, but you are also not KOS any where. When you cross an evil class, like necro with it, you become 'bad'. Unless you can get a ride from a wizard, NOT a Druid (Druid NPC's won't like you much.), stay in Tox till you can get Gathering Shadows, or whatever the necro invis spell is... Also, you will gain an invaluable skill in Tox. The ability to navigate. You will learn where you are and where the gates to the city are on a basic level. You will learn to track your turns and pretty much find yourself easily. This will help in all zones. Learn to navigate by the /loc command. (/l works too. Hotkey it.) Also, start in with your Sense Heading.
When you start, stand in the entrance of your city, Paineel or Erudin, and hit Sense Heading till you succeed. Write it down. You can run the opposite direction and have a good chance of finding the front gates. i.e. If, from the front gates facing out, you get a heading of North, run South when in trouble and you will hit a zone wall. Remember if you are off to the left or right and follow the wall to safety. My first character was an Erudite Magician before Paineel and this works!
Tox isn't a great place, but it's a culling for those who stay there. Only the good emerge from there with any levels.

To THIS post I had to respond (after rating it exelent first).

I have just created my fifth character which happens to be an Erudite Chanter. Each time I have created one, I heard about how I needed to move to a different area because my newbie zone sucked. Each time I have stayed long enough to learn the areas first. This has allowed me to learn skills that I would not have learned anywhere else, which in turn helped me become a more well rounded player while gettting to enjoy learning the WHOLE world and not just the New Yorks and LA s of Norath.

When You have lived in both big city and small, you can then begin to appreciate Norath.

To those who have grouped with me in the past, that should explain both the good I do, as well as the many "goofy" ways I make mistakes.

Toxx isn't great but it teaches you some good habits. I learned to not run around like a chicken with my head cut off, because then some prophet or skellie will kill me and I'll have a hell of a time finding my corpse. So I /loc often, bought a true north spell and try and practice my sense heading. I learned how to get around in the dark, which was terrible at first but now I do just fine. The scarcity of creatures at times forced me to get started on some quests. Every (earth ) day that I've been in Toxx I've leveled. Plus I'm a big fan of the Erudite race and like to be near my home. :0)

The worst drawback, I'd say, is that no one else sticks around the forest, which means if you need help there aren't many players around to give you a hand. Many times people die and either can't find their corpse or know exactly where it is but can't loot it without getting killed. The players that are around are really low level and often can't do much to help.

If you do start out in Toxx, remember to keep an eye on your loc and try and stay close to the guards at night--that's when the Heretics and Skellies are on usually on the prowl. Plus there are more creatures you can safely kill during the daytime.

I can't seem to leave the newbie area, i can't even get to the real Tox forest. i know how, u go underwater but i can't open the rock either.. where do you get the key for that?
RE: Underwater
# Feb 16 2001 at 8:19 PM Rating: Default
The rock under the water leads to The Hole, a level 45+ dungeon. The key to get in costs 100pp (platinum) and is sold in Paineel.

Okay, I am not sure abot the "underwater" bit. My Erudite Necromancer Dialto is only 7th level so I haven't explored too far yet. Is this in Erudin? I have been all over the southern side of the Toxx river but haven't been to visit the kin who banished us from the north.
If you are talking about the rock door at Paineel you need to use the bone crafted key given to any character born of this city. Go to your equipment, left click and hold the key on the rock, look DOWN at the rock (very important), then press "U" to use it. Now the portal opens.
