This large mountain range is now home to the exiled Frogloks of Gukta. The Frogloks share their new home with a host of lizardmen; undead; clans of orcs, bandits, and druids; and sphinxes. Not able to withstand the influx of Frogloks, the hill giants and cyclopses retreated to the northeastern area of the Rathe Mountains.

In the Froglok village there are "a domesticated spiderling"s roming around, i always farm them for silks.

PROS
1. easy to kill
2. they are plentful
3. they don't lower faction
4. in one area so u know where to look.

CONS
1. need to have good faction to hunt there

in the end, good place to farm silks.

The area nearby the spawn point (previously posted) might not be exactly right, of course i could be wrong too....but here it is this is the new location of Hasten Bootstruter:

+2884.14,-1889.28 is the location that we believe is his spawn point.. the previous location is +3034,-1826 which is really close to the one that I gave so they are all in the same area....

Could anyone tell me what happened? I was killed in MOR. I came back and got killed again before I could complete my corpse search and loot. The third time I was successful, but when I found my corpse I /corpsedrag the body to the Inn and when I loot it I discover that some of my prized possesions are missing. A eternal compound bow and several other items of gear from the corpse. I went to POK and examined all of my bags and inventory, not there. Went back to the MOR inn but the body was not there either. Did I do something wrong or can anyone tell me how this could have occured?
Thanks in advance for your help.

You could solo here jsut watch agro. Hunt where the gypsy camp is. Go past the merchant huts to find the gypsy's where the Ldon guy is. You will find gaints skellys and Cyclop. Both where dark blue to my 30 necro. I agroed a cyc and out my pet on it. A skelly followed and I died. But since you are a fighter you could do it. And once you hit your high 30's-40's look for a group to do Hg's. They will give good exp till about 49 and plat out the ass granted there are no high levels in the zone. You could even duo with a druid. Have the druid snare, root, and dot. Send your pet in a couple times and you will have a hg kill. Once you can get a Druid with Kei things will be easy.

I did this with a Ranger from 40-49 solo.

With the Guktan invasion of Rath Mountains, several key mobs have been moved from their traditional places/pathing.

Most notably, the hill giants are moved to the plataeu in the Northeast section (hang a right from the Feerrott entrance). This is also the spawn point for Hasten Bootstrutter's cycle. Notables on the cycle include Maldyn the Unkempt and Brother Zephyl. Hasten/PH wil spawn in the FAR WEST of this section and proceed west THROUGH THE MOUNTAIN. Best to set up in the canyon on the other side to catch him or his PHs. He then tracks west through the Northwest section and does a tour there, comes back eventually to the crossroads area by Feerrott. He then turns into the new hill giant area and back to his start.

What I have been doing (I need to spawn Brother Zephyl) is setting up in the canyon, tracking. Once you get the cycle, it is hard to miss it as it will pop at the top of the list (druid track).
Kill any 'a drake' you see. They will pop into the canyon from the other side of the mountain.

So far I have been able to spawn Hasten 3 or 4 times, Maldyn once, and many 'a drake's. I am guessing that once dead, the next spawn is like 4 minutes (didn't time it). Still waiting for Zephyl but conventional wisdom says he is on the same cycle.

I was just trying to find some information on the new quests now that the forgs have been deported ot the rathe mountains. I have a froggie necro and was wondering about his new armour quests. I have started them but then the trail went cold after they tell me to go talk to the elder. He gives me this long quest about picking up 3 pieces of a fallen frogloks sword and bringing them back to him to learn how to use some sort of illusion. I have a feeling that is not part of my newbie armor quest. If anyone has done the necro newbie armor quests please feel free to post the info. Thanks all.

They are found just south from Ferrott zone, west of Undead.

Lol, in mid-2005 this zone is still heavily camped at the HG's. But, never see any druids there anymore (I love druids, that was one of my first chars). Unfortunately, it is still mianly camped by high level farmers...I am usually there with my lvl 33 cleric and my bro's lvl 34 shammy and it can still be a fight for HG's...and oddly enough, every one I have ever seen there have been very nice...not the usual fights over KS's or any other rudeness....why this zone only?

Ok, I have been exploring RM and found an are by Zaza the sphinx that looks like it could be an entrance to a dungeon. When you look at the front it has blue flames to the left and right with a path down the middle that leads to what could be a door but it is a wall. There are also two hands that have flames in the palms of them to the left and right of the could be entrance. Now there are some emblems all around it and one on the very top of the entrance and when you click it, it says you are too far to reach but you get close and you can not get anything out of it or even close enough to reach it. If you look in the blue flames it apears that they are actually skelly bones that are on fire, and they move!! I found a wall that you can click and it moves, but there is not apparent reason as to why. I have looked all over the web and found nothing on this area of RM. Unfortunetly everyone is too worried about the HG's to even go looking around. I dont know if this is something to do with LDoN, but it has been there for a long time cause I do remember seeing it along time ago just after PoP came out. Wonder if it is a dungeon or a puzzle of some sort. Has to be something cause they went ot alot of trouble to just put some scenery in the back part of a zone that hardly anyone would find. I personally think it is one of the coolest things I have found in Norath to date.

If anyone knows anything or has already figured this out please post something. Till then I will continue to try and figure this out.

probably a zone they have yet to add or changed their mind about adding. There is a place in shadeweavers thicket that seems to lead to another zone but is a dead end and is guarded by "firefall" mobs on the north side of the zone. Someone told me that this was planned to be added in later but I don't know when later is. Maybe rathe mountians is the same? I have been there and check it out a while ago and stop by once in a while. Now that the war is brewing I wonder...going to check next expansion. I was guessing that it may have to do with the 2 sphinxs but working on their faction takes for ever and they don't say hi. since one is guarding the "shrine" I have been killing the other for faction. Also the symbols on the "shrine" ar located in other places around norrath. They are in towers like the one in the oasis of marr. Their meaning is about the gods of norrath. In the center is the symbol of Veeshan. The 3 symbols in the circle are gods who are trying to keep the wurm queen in check and the 4 outside are other gods too. Supposely it has to do with the prophesy of trakanon but then I have seen those symbols else where in my travels. I wish I had the link but I lost it some time ago when my hard drive went berzerk. btw, what wall moves? Here's a nother riddle...in Timourous Deep there is a shrine in the south west corner of the zone that holds a port to each city. On each port is symbol of the city. The port is one way and when you get to teh city you can click on the stone but it says you need a key. What key?

Here's a link about the sphinx...http://bhur.silverwordz.com/sections.php?op=viewarticle&artid=25
but not much help.

They didn't get nerfed. Will probably be about 10 posts saying the same thing as this one about the drops. Oh well. As for those druids being a problem. Hmmmm, they are able to quad kite, so they do. They are able to handle more than one at a time, so they do. With all the zones available now, due to 5 expansions, people still complain about overcamped Hill Giants, or quading them. Goodness Gracious, how about moving to another zone and make mad cash there. There are many zones now that can make you alot of money. Heck, if your in your 30s, go to Dawnshroud Peaks and hunt the Tribals for exp. Then when you have multiple bags of acrylia, go to the bazaar and make a killing selling it. As a 39 level Mage, arent the HGs almost light blue to you. You cant be getting too much exp from them. So, if you think about it, arent you "farming" here anyway. Wouldnt that make you as bad as those who quad the giants. I could be wrong about the level on them, but I think I remember them turning light blue to me when I hit 40, not sure tho. I mean really, how many zones are there now? If its just money you want to make, then head to Ulthork Beach in Vel and farm tusks for turn in at CS. Selling the gems can make a hefty profit. If you have a higher level toon, then head to Umbral Plains and hunt Elysians, their gems= good money as well. I could go on for quite a while about good loot zones, but you probably get the idea by now, hopefully.

ive made loads of money in a group with a 31st lvl cleric with a druid or something like that (higher lvl of course), and sometimes they drop 40 (or even 50!)pps, and sometimes they drop 10 gold. There is a rumour that there are high lvl rogues going arround the area and pickpocketing the giants, so people dont get money. Im not sure myself. I just think that its the luck for each kill, but they (on the whole) are damn good money.

Yup, great money. Yup, good XP. But I've yet to be there when there weren't at least 3 druids quadding Giants. You WILL be KS'd (and 90% of the time it's purely accidental) and you WILL accidently KS someone. The giants are big enough that conning them at a distance won't give you an accurate picture of their HP bar.

Some hints: hit your /assist when you con a mob. If they've been rooted or otherwise attaakted your target will change. And a GREAT hint for Bards and other charmers: use Charm to pull. No one can take your pull when it's your pet. Although I did have a horrible argument with someone who had been trying to nuke my pet Hill Giant for a minute and hadn't noticed that none of them were landing!

This zone rocks for cash :). You MUST be prepared to have kills stolen. Dont sweat it, other giants will pop and you WILL accidently steal someones giant due to random location of pops and rough terrain. I made 4,000pp this weekend soloing hill giants. I was a 45th level paladin with argent defender and decent armor and of course KEI :).

Yes, which is why the zone is often full of lvl 50+ characters farming the Hill Giants.

The Ice Giants in Everfrost drop the same coin, but are static spawns and don't wander and are ALWAYS camped. It seems that most giants (not Mountain, Storm, or Frost though) drop up to 40plat, and are the best source of cash in the whole game. I kind of wish Verant would put more cash on higher level mobs, so that these guys would be more available to players of the appropriate level.

RE: 34 shammy

I presume you mean finding ledge groups in OT? Ledge groups in OT are probably safer and more reliable. You're closer to the zone line and on the edge of the zone at the same time, and there are usually several groups nearby and pleanty of MoBs.

Hill Giants here drop about the best plat in the game (same as Ice Giants, I've see them drop up to 40pp), and are about lvls 33-37, so they would be good exp with a group. However, since they drop so much cash, they are very heavily camped, oftem by lvl 50+ characters who just want the money.

When I went here as a shammy in my 30's, I'd get frustrated trying to find somehting to hunt if the Hill GIants were camped. So I ended up staying in the OT until I was high enough level to hit the Dreadlands.

This zone is a Level 30 plus zone. Anything less than that is just a TRAIN! waiting to happen.

Second
The place is full of druids because it is a great place (finally) for us to solo (around 40) and get both XP and loot. Lots of people in this zone dis drOOds for not killing place holders, for trains, KS (we don't need to KS) and all the while sending tells for SoW, ports, tracking...

In most zones Druids are little more than medically trained servants to be used and given orders. This is a nice change. Don't forget to root AND ensnare first or you will have a train of your own.

Be safe and try to have a little fun.

What is up with these? I was surprised one day to see a running blue con to a 56 Unkempt druid by their area in mountains of rathe.

It was an "unkempt fanatic." So, though I was kindly to them, I decided to use my druid epic dot on it. I got the post luclin "immune to run change" thing that irritates me. She then stopped and just kept casting on me. I stopped and just kept nuking. After nuking for a time, with most doing half damage of 383 or so, I got closer and her health had hardly moved. I also noticed that she never ran up to melee me or anything, though she was threaten at that point. I kept nuking and she never did run over to hit me and finally she abruptly ran off, still at nearly full health.

Either she is bugged or meant to be screwy. What is she for?

She's a GM. When they do this GM event, all the Unkempts in the zone are increased in lvl to around 45 or so, then the mass of them slaughters the 2 sphinx's (who are also GM's at that point). If you help either of the sphinx's and they live, you get "rewarded" with good faction with that phoenix and some kewl gears.

And yes, you can save BOTH of them and get good faction with both.

i have figured out the best way for an sk that is lvl 40+ all u have to do is hunt at frontier mountains untils one of the giants drops a weighted axe then put the weighted axe in one of ur GENERAL slots make a hot key for that general slo and ur melee attack then when u are back in rath mnts just darkness them hit them with the weighted axe then run about 200 feet then smack em again with it i call this weighted axe kiting it has worked with me u should be kitting him for about 150 - 200 each hit if ur double attack is any good ull prolly hit him for 150 150 each time and son he will start to run thats when u start using ur normal wep what u would normally use such as in a grp after the fight u will prolly have lost 1 - 2 bubs of mana and prolly only lost 1 bub of hp if u cash lifedraw while he is running this hp would not be a problem at all ..( i have an ikky regen so it is not a porblem for me ) but the VERY MOST IMPORTANT thing is make sure u have a sow ur u are DEAD in seconds they are just to fast..... that is how i have soloed hgs . or u can darkness fear and beat the hell outa them but most likly ur CHA isnt like 1 so fear wont last very long and soon he will turn around and hit u fer 90

43 sk weggy

if nuthing here works for u hit them with a bat

Why is it that there is always some fool who never uses PERIODS? If you have a paragraph worth of post, DEFINE your SENTENCES! If you would quit playing EQ and get your G.E.D., you might be smart enough to know proper English.

I am a 42 Sk soloing 3 or 4 of these without any downtime (with KEI ofcourse), just using the regular fear kite process, just make sure you fear and dark regularly, so it doesnt wear off, then you should be fine.

Rathe Mountains is my all time un-favorite zone for two reasons. The first is that its impossible to get around here as a noob without a map--if you aggro something you will die before you can find a zone exit. The second and biggest reason for me is the type of people this zone attracts--mostly the arrogant, KS'ing c00l d00ds of which 3/4 seem to be druids , who use track to get to the giants before anyone else has a chance to get anything for themselves. I have nothing against druids, just that this place seems to attract all the a$$hole druids on the server. I have been here at 5am with only 9 people in the zone and gotten KS'ed as many as 7 times in a row. Any more than 20 people in the zone and you might as well hang it up if you dont have a tracker in your group. Some of the rudest people I have met in the game are from this zone and I'd guess that over half of the people on my ignore list got there from incidents in RM. On top of that the few times that Ive been in a decent sized/balanced group here to prevent Ks'ing the giants havent dropped more than a few pp worth of coins. Just a heads up to those who want to come here for money AND still have a good time playing.

Loot is fixed (minus a few action players effect and a few special NPCs) at the time they spawn.

I was in RM 2 nights ago killing HG's solo. Sometimes have a run of 5 or more in a row with less that 2pp on them (sometimes even no plat coins) and then I'd get 2 or 3 in a row with 35-50pp on them.

Sorry you just had bad luck.

I have noticed that the plat drops from Hill Giants seems to be nerfed if you solo. I have never gotten more than 5 pp soloing an HG, but if I partner with one other person, my split of the plat seems to be about 12pp on every other HG or so. Is this consistent with what others are seeing?

Any mob you see already has its drops set up on it when it spawns. Nothing you do or the amount of people killing it makes a difference.

Unless you pickpocket it. On Rdocet Nife, there was a jerk lvl 60 rogue who was pickpocketing all the HG, and if anyone complaine,d he started shouting about duelling them, and using assassinate.

What an annoying guy. Anyway, just venting.

Well, they don't check IDs at the zone line, so you could come here at any level at all ... ;)

But there are so many mobs here who can kill low level characters in less than five seconds, you'd have to live with the reality that your whole group could be wiped out while you were minding your own business, crossing the zone or going to sell.

If you're comfortable with that, here are a couple of suggestions.

A balanced group of four, level 7 to 9, who have good group skills, could come here and hunt bugs. Best spot is probably the isolated corner at the western end of the valley with the troll guards, due west from the central bug pillar. Steer wide around the tower with the trolls. There's a lizard camp and then the Z bug pillar.

The valley north of Cynthia's gypsy camp would be great experience for a group in the low to mid-teens, hunting bears. If you move to the west end of that valley you will never see trains. Kodiaks would be red to this group, grizzlies would be low red or yellow, and smaller bears would be blue and light blue.

Neither of these would be great for loot. You'd pick up scarapaces from the bugs and some good pelts from the bears. But the experience would be fast.

If you are confident of your soloing skills, you could probably do ok in either of these two areas. Probably want to be a couple levels higher in each instance, if you're going to solo.

Macnair's Guide to Fast Leveling from 42 to 48 with Troll Guards in Rathe Mountains

1 Preliminaries

1A This is what I did, as a solo Barbarian Shaman, from 42 to 48. I expect that Mages, Necromancers, and Shadowknights could adapt this to their skills and spells. Other classes may need to form a team of two, melee and healer or caster, in order to do this safely.

1B Best bind point: at Cynthia's gypsy camp near the Lake Rathe zone, right in front of merchant Chandra Kali.

1C These trolls are on a precise 5 minute 50 second spawn cycle. Whenever one of them dies, it will repop exactly 5 minutes and 50 seconds later. Keeping track of this timing is the key to this exercise.

1D. This technique will fill your experience bar rapidly. At level 46 and 47, I gained a yellow every 68 minutes. In hell level 45 it was slower: about a yellow per 2.5 hours. I gained more per kill at 44, but it was harder to maintain the pattern, so I gained a yellow every 75 to 85 minutes. At 42 and 43 I was only doing one troll, but the experience was almost a third of a blue per kill, so I still ended up with a yellow every 75 to 85 minutes. Medium and small races would gain experience proportionately faster.

1E. Record keeping. This is a MUST. You can use notebook paper, create a form on your computer to print up, or use the back of an envelope (that was my preferred technique). But you must create a running column of figures for when the mob dies, and when it will repop. You need to use a digital watch. I was wearing the wrong watch one time, and you know, it's not always easy to decide whether that minute hand is on the 47 or the 48. Use a digital watch!

Your column of figures will look like this:

Gruilka | Gruilka
is dead | will pop
..12:29 | 17:19
..18:25 | 24:15
..25:59 | 31:49
..33:38 |

As the mob dies, look at your watch, and write down the minutes and seconds currently showing. Then add 5 minutes and 50 seconds, and write that number in the adjacent column. (You get very good at adding this in your head. Most of the time you add 6 minutes and subtract 10 seconds, heh.) So the missing number in the example above is ...

... that's right, 39:28. Everyone who got 39:28 gets a gold star. (And also gets to level up this weekend.)

Record keeping is the key, because it tells you when the mob is about to pop. That means your spell will always hit first. You will keep that troll from summoning a pesky pet. You know whether you have time to refresh that buff that is fading, or if you've got time to run to the kitchen for a drink. You can decide whether or not you are not ready for the next round: you can decide that you need to retreat and rest up, if necessary.

At level 42 and 43 you will have a double column, for your chosen mob. At level 44 and up, you will have four columns: column 1 and column 2 for Shiznak, column 3 and column 4 for Gruilka.

2 Single pulling (Level 42 - 43). You can do Shiznak the shadowknight OR you can do Gruilka the shaman, but you cannot do both. Gruilka doesn't have as many hitpoints, and doesn't hit quite as hard as Shiznak: but she's a better spellcaster, and she will heal herself if you're not careful. Even so, either one is very doable at this level.

2A Spells Loaded. Offensive spells: Scourge, Root, Venom of Snake. Defensive Spells: SoW, Greater Healing, Chloroplast, Cannibalize. Remaining 'utility' slot is used to swap buff spells in and out.

2B If you are doing Shiznak, meditate east of the tower, top of the small hill, looking down at Shiznak and his pet. If you are doing Gruilka, meditate northwest of the tower, on a small ridge near a stony area. I think it is not mana efficient to summon a pet in this situation (but it will be, at level 44 and later). Buffs on yourself: SoW, Tnarg, Shifting Shield, Strength, Chloroplast. If you are fighting Shiznak, add: Endure Magic. If you are fighting Gruilka, add: Resist Disease. Med to full.

2C Starting the battle. This is the only part that is a little tricky, because that troll you are about to attack is fully buffed and has a pet. Move to within casting range. Cast Root. At this point in your career Root should stick on a blue mob almost all the time. Run backwards out of casting range, stop, target mob's pet (which will be in your face by then). Cast Root. Move sideways: cast Venom of Snake. Retarget troll, move into casting range, cast Scourge, cast Venom of Snake. Move out of casting range; sit and med. As Root breaks, as DoTs wear off, recast. The troll's pet should die with no further attention on your part: if it breaks root early, just reroot it, and step away. You can chase the troll down and practice your melee skills at the end of the battle, or cast one final Root and Venom to finish it off. As the troll dies and you see that You gained experience! report, NOTE THE TIME in minutes and seconds, and write it on your record. Add 5 minutes and 50 seconds and write down that time in the adjacent column.

2D The next rounds of the battle. In a typical eight minute interval, you will be fighting for 2 minutes, moving back into position for 30 seconds, and medding / rebuffing for 5 1/2 minutes. As the final seconds tick down to the pop time: stand up, target your mob as it pops, and cast: Root, Scourge, Venom of Snake. Step back out of casting range. Sit and med.

You will get a few resists, and you will take a few hits. Shiznak will hit you for 351 on his harmtouch, or Gruilka will get a DoT and a nuke on you. If it all goes bad, use your last mana to cast a root: if it sticks, you should get enough of a head start to limp to the Feerrott zone.

3 Breaking the camp (level 44 and up).

3A Spells Loaded. Offensive spells: Blizzard Blast, Root, Venom of Snake. Defensive Spells: SoW, Greater Healing, Chloroplast, Cannibalize. Remaining 'utility' slot is used for various buffs, with Alacrity plugged in last.

3B Meditate out in front of the tower, in the open area on the far side of the grove of trees. Summon a pet. If your pet does not /con light blue, try again. Command /pet guard here. Buffs on pet and self: SoW, Altuna, Guardian, Resist Magic, Strength. Additional buff on self: Chloroplast. Additional buffs on pet: Deftness; plus Alacrity, just before starting the battle.

3C Med to full, cast Alacrity, med for 30 seconds. Recheck: /pet guard here.

3D Target Shiznak. Run to the left of that big tree to close to casting range, cast root. Run back to pet, taking the 351 harm touch as you go. Sit and med for one tick, stand, and take a wimpy hit from Shiznak's pet. Your pet will aggro onto Shiznak's pet, and kill it easily. While it does, run back into casting range, cast Venom of Snake, move out of casting range, med till root breaks. Stand, recast root, cast Blizzard Blast, med. Pet will have aggroed on Shiznak, Venom of Snake and pet will finish off Shiznak. NOTE THE TIME in minutes and seconds in column 1. Med for 2 minutes and 30 seconds. Add 5 minutes 50 seconds to column 1, write this time in column 2.

3E Target Gruilka. Move to casting range, cast root. Run back to pet. Her pet will attack you, then will aggro onto your pet. Step away, target Gruilka's pet, cast Venom of Snake. Your pet and Venom of Snake will now kill her pet easily. Retarget Gruilka, move into casting range, cast Venom of Snake, move outside casting range, med till root breaks. Stand, reroot. Pet will aggro on Gruilka. Cast Blizzard Blast. Med. Pet and Venom of Snake will finish of Gruilka. NOTE THE TIME in minutes and seconds in column 3. Add 5 minutes 50 seconds to column 3, write this time in column 4.

3F The camp is now broken. Your basic pattern every seven minutes will now be: one minute to kill a mob, 2 or 3 minutes to med, one minute to kill the other mob, 2 or 3 minutes to med.

4 Holding the camp. Move forward: /pet guard me, move fairly close to the tower, /pet guard here. You want to be close enough that when you hit your /pet attack hotkey, your pet is in the troll's face within a second or so.

4A Sit and med. Watch the spawn point, with mouse cursor positioned, as the clock winds down. As the mob pops, click to target it, press your /pet attack hotkey, stand and cast Venom of Snake, cast Blizzard Blast. Do NOT cast Root. If you cast Root, your pet will die.

4B Your pet will take the 351 harm touch from Shiznak and several hits, but Shiznak will almost always aggro on you when Blizzard Blast lands, and come to fight you. Stand there and melee: you'll take some hits in the 70s and 80s, but usually you'll lose only about a bubble of health. In the meantime your DoT and your pet are whittling away at Shiznak, and he will flee. Sit and med: the tag end of the DoT and your pet will finish him off. NOTE THE TIME in minutes and seconds in column 1. Add 5 minutes 50 seconds and post in column 2.

4C If Shiznak does not aggro on you after you cast Blizzard Blast, immediately cast it again. That will drop his health below the 'flee' threshhold, he will start to run (more of a limp, actually), and your pet and DoT will finish him easily.

4D Shiznak is not a heavy magic user: he will try to cast heat blood, fear, and lifetap, but not as often as he should. With Resist Magic buff, fear landed successfully on my pet maybe once every ten battles, and about once every other level on me. Bashing him when he begins to cast a spell interrupts him perhaps one time in three.

4E If Guilka does not aggro on you after you cast Blizzard Blast, or if she stops to cast a spell, cast Blizzard again, and it will kill her outright.

4F Gruilka can kill you with her hits in melee, but she casts much more often than Shiznak. She will routinely cast attack slowing spells on your pet, and they will land successfully half the time. She will nuke for 50 or 60, and will cast lower level poison and disease DoTs, sometimes using Scourge. Bashing her when she begins to cast a spell interrupts her perhaps two times in three.

4G The key to keeping the sequence flowing smoothly is mana regeneration. If you can bum a clarity off a passing enchanter, why not? I did not find it necessary, however, as long as I paid attention and made sure I was using Medidate, Cannibalize and Chloroplast to keep health and mana as high as I could, all along the way.

5 When to Retreat. Sometimes the battles will be easy. Sometimes your spell gets resisted twice in a row, then you fizzle and then you get interrupted, and meanwhile the troll has smacked away two bubbles of your life. Your health, your pet’s health, and your mana will ebb and flow. I prefer to attack with health, mana, and pet all at 70% or better: and at level 46 and 47 I had the rhythm down so smoothly that I was able to maintain about that level, keeping full buffs up. Even so, you don’t always have as much as you’d like. Minimum mana to win the battle is 30%, with excellent equipment (wisdom 200); 40% with good equipment (wisdom 160), plus at least 60% health on pet if he has to take that harm touch. If you are low on mana and health and need to rebuff: don’t attack. Don't rush your attack to maintain the rhythm. Instead, back off. Command /pet guard me, move back well out of casting range, med, heal, rebuff, and start over. It's much easier to rebreak the camp once you’re back at full than it is desperately to try to run for the zone at zero mana and 10% health with an angry troll beating on you.

6 Looting / Selling. The trolls provide minimal loot: small silver to perhaps 5 plat in coin, occasional fine steel weapons (average merchant value 5 plat), large ringmail pieces (average merchant value 2 plat), runes and words. If you are in a minimal mana situation, do not loot. Keep on medding, instead.

If you are ok on mana, 2 or 3 plat per kill can add up to 200 or 300 plat after 100 kills. Those weapons and armor weigh a lot, though: you'll get encumbered pretty quickly. It is possible to go and sell without breaking the rhythm. Cast Glamour on yourself, mem Gate, and switch to your charisma jewelry BEFORE the last kill. Let your last kill before selling be Gruilka. Leave her corpse there (it's not going anywhere, you can get it later). As she falls, immediately Gate to the gypsy camp. Immediately sit to meditate: then right click on Chandra, sell your stuff, stand and run back to the troll tower. Shiznak may have popped, and called his pet. Ignore his pet: proceed as usual, /pet attack, Venom, Blizzard, melee. Your pet will quickly kill his after Shiznak is dead.

OK, there isn't a bank here where you can put loot in the vault. Evil characters can run next door to Feerrott and then to Oggok: but what about us good characters? It's a long run to a bank.

But if your faction is ok with the gypsies, you can exchange money with them: after you've gotten all that heavy gold from killing hill giants, you can turn it into plat. Here's how.

The problem is that the hill giants drop a lot of their loot in fine steel weapons that are heavy, and in gold, silver, and copper coins that are heavy when you have hundreds of them. Most people end up destroying the silver and copper, simply because of the weight. If you destroy 400 silver, that's 4 plat you are throwing away. (Remember when you were a newby, and getting 8 or 9 copper from a merchant was good, and you thought you'd never have a platinum coin? Remember how awesome it was when you had your first plat? Now, when you destroy 400 silver, you are discarding 4 plat, just because it's hard to carry. Funny, isn't it?)

Go ahead and destroy your copper, if you like: but take all the rest of your loot to Cynthia's gypsy camp near the Lake Rathe zone. (It's the place where I bind in the zone, so that I can just gate there, no matter how badly encumbered I am with coin and weapons.)

As a barbarian shaman I don't have great charisma: with buffs and equipment, it's just 113. Even so, with faction of indifferent and 113 cha, I can buy mithril earrings from gypsy Chandra Kali for 3 plat 7 gold, and then turn around and can sell them back to her for 3 plat 2 gold. Thus I lose 5 gold on every exchange.

Yet here's the interesting thing. When you buy from a merchant, the game first uses up your copper, then your silver, then your gold, then your platinum, in order to buy. When you sell to a merchant, the game first gives you plat, then gold, then silver, then copper. If you want to buy something that costs 10 plat, and you are holding 10 plat and 10,000 copper, it will take your copper. But if you sell something to a merchant for 10 plat, you get 10 platinum coins.

So here's a typically example. Say I have 240 gold and 400 silver from looting hill giants. That's worth 28 plat in all, and has the weight of 640 coins. I am encumbered.

If I destroy the 400 silver because they are weighing me down, I lose their value and their weight. So I would then have 240 gold, worth 24 plat, and weighing 240 coins. I am no longer encumbered - but those 240 gold still weigh quite a bit.

Suppose, instead, I buy mithril earrings and then sell them back. I'll do this for eight exchanges: probably buying 7 earrings, then selling them back, then buying just one and selling it back, to make sure to use up the little coins on the last trade. I will have lost 5 gold on each exchange: so I've lost 4 plat in all, the equivalent of 400 silver. But in the process, the 240 gold have been turned into plat. So I now have 24 plat, worth 24 plat, weighing 24 coins.

Before I learned to do this, several days of hunting hill giants might well yield 600 or 800 gold coins. I'd be badly encumbered. Somehow I wasn't willing to throw away the gold in order to reduce weight. So even after mooching a port, I would still have to stagger across a couple zones to get to High Pass or Freeport in order to bank. This is much better: it's a lot easier to run with 80 plat in your pocket instead of 800 gold.

Old post I know, but just want to clarify that peridots and such gems that were used for spell are no longer needed as a reagent. Sony dropped that requirement several months ago. In fact my little shammy and BL don't need snake skins for their AC buffs anymore either.

The post by Macnair is a good one and still works based on my BL hunting there a few days ago.

The other thing is that you can get to RM from PoK and back via the Arena stone in PoK now. You are on the opposite side of the RM zone in Lake Rathetear, so levitate is a handy spell to have. But it can be swam if you are careful to avoid the goblin haunts.

Just sell all your loot to the Gnome vendor near the inn. And buy Peridots from him to eat up the gold silver and copper. You know you will prolly need peridots for Cleic buffs like symbol, and for enchanter buffs like rune IV. If nothing else toss a few peridots to a cleric or enchanter in PoK for a donations for that Temperence, or KEI that you begged an hour and a half to get.

I tried this earlier and it cuts down on travel time: Bank in Luclin. From RM it's a run to Lake Rathe, South and North Karanas. Wait at the Wizard portal and port to Luclin. There's a bank one zone from the Nexus. This cuts my travel time (to Riverdale) by half.
However, you still have a ways to go if you don't yet have SoL.

First they put these people in, with some new building thing.

The captain gave a quest which was broken because the thing you gave to the mage lady nearby did nothing. After a patch later, she gave you a thing to give to izera in sro.

Giving the thing to izera was still broken last time I checked, even with kindly faction, and she gave no reaction no stuff no xp no faction no nothing.

Now just recently when I checked all of the primordial malice people are simply gone. Think verant just removed them all to fix the quests or bailed and figured it was not worth it? I'm kind of peeved since my dark elf cleric bothered to get to kindly with them to train there and to do the quests.

My Druid stoped by this zone recently to make some fast plats. Back in the good old days I used to make around +400pp per 3 hour session and the giants would frequently drop 10-60pp per kill. Well those days are gone, its seems like Verant took the nerf bat and beat the crap outta Rath. The common drop now is usually gold to 5 plats. Big 20-60pp drops are still there, but they're now quite rare.

The plats rush is over folks, time to move on and earn your pp somewhere else.

I heard through ooc's in the zone that the zone was nerfed around Halloween, I have no idea if this is true, but I do know the average drop has decreased. My hubbie & I kept track one recent night and accummulated just over 378 plat total after killing 15 HG's - an average of just over 25 plat per. No question drops are lower.

Also, I hear there are a number of rogues lingering about and pickpocketing the HGs as we kill them. I have never played a rougue, but a number of the HG's had no plat but the usual amount of gold, silver & copper. Is this an indication that Rogues may have pickpocketed it? Makes sense, but I don't know if they have the ability to just pick the plat.

Not really. If a rogue is standing there pickpocketing your hill giant, then what you will probably see when you loot it is something like:

1pp, 1gp, 1sp, 1cp

...The higher level rogues can take more plat than other coins, I think, but you should still not see so lopsided a loot as NO plat with LOTS of other coins.

I personally think that there are plenty of other zones that can make you cash. At your level, go to Umbral Plains and root/dot Elysians, they drop some really nice gems that can sell for quite a bit to merchants (one gem, cant remember which one, sells for about 157 plat to merchie). They will even take you to about level 56 or so very quickly.

As I cast siphon strength to pull the Hill Giant, I turn around and run to a safe spot, screaming like a little girl. I finally arrive at the safe destination and gets ready to turn around and snare the monster. I wait for 20secs and see nothing. I run back and wonder if he got stuck behind a tree or something. Nope. then I saw the other group had already killed it.

I've heard many stories like this in Rathe Mountain and one story where a guy was KSed 10times in one hour. KSing happens when the groups are to much for the monster spawn so everying fights to get it.

I don't know if this only happens on Povar but it is pretty annoying. Some sites say that on other servers Rathe Mountain is never crowded. Well I got something to say to that...

If anyone else is experiancing this difficulty, please post something. Of course I made a bee line back to DL cuz the pp/exp ratio was just too bad for soloing.

I agree this zone is crowded. I'd actually love to hear suggestions on how to camp the giants. As an Iksar I had never been away from Kunark very much and NEVER to Antonica before lvl 36.
I decided one evening to have some fun and hunt with my real life husband's lvl 46 wizzy and some of his lower lvl guildees. Needless to say I was inexperienced in zone and was told the giants spawn from everywhere. The group set up camp just on top of hill, I found a few mobs, but later was cursed at up and down by two player characters that I never saw. They continually threatened me for KS. We moved of course, but what greed and meanness this money and crowding can spawn. I had no idea they were there and wish this area was clearer to me how to camp like a fort or something. Just a warning to others who want to play here, there's some not very nice people in this zone playing too, that can truely ruin your night.

Weird. On Sayrn server, with a 30 cleric i found that there were never enough people around who wanted a group- however, i am English which probably means that im on in the least crowded times. And cos the druids normally dont want to group when they can solo perfectly themselves. But, i got by and all this talk about the plat being nerfed is NOT TRUE! I could easily make 200pps in 1/2 an hour. The only reason for me not to make loadsa money is because half my time is spent getting my corpse and getting KEI (which, by the way, if you are a cleric or a druid and you want to stand a chance against these annoying HGs, is ESSENTIAL).
So, if you are hunting these things, dont just track them all yourselves and leave none for other people, just take them one at a time and share with others. And you die more when you quad pull, and you kill them slower. Its pointless, so if you quad them, dont complain if you get KSed.

Now i shall shut up.
Help my 37 Shammy Solo HGs

I've been able to successfully solo HGs in the Rathe Mountains with my 37 level Shaman. The problem is that my kills seem to take forever. My strategy for doing it seems to take at least 5 minutes per kill and results in a terrible amount of downtime. Here's my strat:

I start off by putting myself in bear form and summoning my doggy. I then will cast SoW on both of us and at least Regen on myself with maybe some other buffs. Next, I will find a blue HG and cast Scourge on him. I'll let him chase me for a few seconds,, letting the aggro build up from the scourge damage. Then, I will send in the doggy with taunt turned off. I then do laps around the zone near Feerrott until the scourge runs out. At that point, I'll stop and get an envenomed breath off on him while he is closing the distance. Lather, rinse, repeat until he is so hurt he starts wandering off then I jump in and bash him til he's dead.

Is there a better way to do this to speed up the process? I'm thinking that if I were to root him and let dots take him down to 50% health then send my dog in and melee with him that would be more mana efficient. trouble is, he is hitting me 3 times each round for around an average of 50-60 points each hit. I can take maybe 3 rounds before i have to run myself. When I do he kills my dog and I'm screwed.

What am I missing here? Do I just need armor upgrades and better AC? Everyone talks about how Shammies are supposed to be able to melee so well, but I'm not able to pull it off. I think my buffed AC is just at 600 and my defense is around 150. My weapons skills are maxed.

Anyone care to shed some insight on this?

I don't think it is mana efficient to use a pet in this situation.

If you let your pet tank, either the giant will quickly kill your pet and you will have used a good chunk of mana to summon a pet and gained no advantage. Or you'll use up all the rest of your mana healing your pet. That means the giant will need a little more time to kill your pet. But then you, out of mana, will face a giant that still has 90% health. Not pretty.

I have soloed many Hill Giants in Rathe as a shaman in late 30s early 40s. This is a good place to master using the root-DoT kite method. The best place to run the kite is in the main east - west corridor, from the bug pillar to the Feerrot zone. This is safe (mostly) for the soloer: watch your health bar, keep SoW up all the time, and if you run out of mana, just zone. You only die with seriously bad luck: back-to-back stuns, for example.

It is safe for everyone else as well, unless they deliberately attack the HG, or are sitting there medding next to where you root the HG. Most everyone knows not to med in the corridor, for fear of trains: so there should not be a problem there.

Find a HG in the valley, cast your disease DoT on him, and run out to the corridor. Turn the corner, run another few seconds, stop, count to one, and cast root. (Counting to one is important, it helps avoid that pesky "your spell is interrupted" message.) If root sticks, cast your poison DoT. Run about 2 seconds more, sit, and med.

Don't turn around and look at the giant. Just keep facing the direction you are going to run.

Keep in touch with the situation by reading the messages in the chat window, NOT by turning around to see if the HG is still rooted. Back when you had to open your spell book to meditate, you found you could visualize what was happening by reading the chat window messages. You can do the same thing now: you'll know that root has broken, or that your DoT has worn off, because you read the message. If you turn around to look at the giant, you will lose too much time when you have to turn around again to run away.

With a little practice you will learn to stop and sit down to med just at the edge of casting range. That gives you the best options. If your poison DoT wears off, you can stand and recast it. If root continues to hold, just sit down and med some more. If root wears off first, you can stand and cast root, and then once again move to the edge of casting range.

When you get to the corner for the Feerrot zone, turn around there, and run straight back. You'll pass the HG, and take one or two hits. But since you have SoW and he doesn't, you'll blow past him. Get enough distance, cast root again, renew DoTs as necessary, and med some more.

It can still all go bad: the HG resists everything, you get aggro from other mobs, you get stunned, you get dead. But starting from full health and full mana, ordinarily you can take a HG down and still have 60 80 health and 40 50 mana remaining.

I should probably point out that it doesn't work if two people are trying to solo HGs in the corridor at the same time ... And you can also use this same technique in HG valley: but there is considerably more risk of getting aggro from a second HG or a skel.

The best time to use your pet with HGs is in a grouop. Use the command /pet taunt off to keep him healthy, and he'll add significant damage every battle as the tanks take the hits. In the meantime, you keep SoW on everybody, cast quickness on the tanks and pets, drop a poison DoT on the HG, and provide heals: and your group will have a steady stream of exp and plats.

But I think I proved painfully enough that my pet and I could not come close to beating a HG if there was any significant amount of melee involved. I found that skipping the pet and using the root-dot kite, I could solo them quite effectively.

Zone Change?

I have really enjoyed the recent change in this zone. And I hope it is for good. I think they should have a couple of zones like this in the game. Where some good items drop that are nodrop. Items for the causal player. For far too many items you need to be able to wait hours for a camp and then get lucky with the dice or pay some farmer for it. One of the things I enjoy most about EQ is improving the quality of my equipment. And zones like this would allow those of us with limited time on line to do just that.

Another thing I think is good about the change is all that pp is gone. Sure I have hunted here for my share of the pp as well. Leaving the change as is would have a noticable inpact on the amount of pp in the game.

I don't even cair that this stuff is not as good as what drops at the popular camps. Why should it be? After all it is easier to get. But I think it is great to have zone where you can get a pick-up group in realativly short time and have a shot at a good item. And I hope they make more of these. For far too long EQ has been becomming harder and harder for the causal player, it is about time for a change like this.

[Tue Oct 09 23:26:22 2001] Acolyte Xjari V`Iyr reads quickly through the note before nodding sharply to Astinus . 'Well then, I see you have caught the eye of the Captain's recruitment. You are most fortunate to be considered for these trials, outsider. However, do not think for a moment that your collective tasks will be of any ease. Take this message to Izera N'Kar. She can be found in the southern desert during the evening hours. She will provide further commands as to your duties. Rathe mts for bards

A bard can go from level 27-40+ without ever having to leave rathe mts (except to bank the massive plat you get). The secret is charm-kiting :)
The best was to go about it is to buy CHA jewelry b4 u hit 27 so u will have it rdy. CHA of 125 or even 150 is awesome even for charming red mobs (but it can be done lower than that, mine was only 90 for a long time).
You will start hunting cyclops at level 27. the best area for this is the little valley right next to lake rathe zone. Just run around (always having selo's on) and look for 2 cyclops, throw a snare (prolly resisted) on one of them and run close enought to the other to make him aggro, then walk them out of the valley area out to the adjoining section. You will be able to run around without fear of adds there. Once u have the cycs into your hunting area, pick one that u can land a spell on (see if u can land on it by doing 5 belows, if all resisted try the other cyc, if that resists too... zone). You will stay targeted on that cyc the ENTIRE FIGHT.
Start running in a circle twisting selo's (ALWAYS have selo's up) and your charm spell. when your charm spell lands (it will only land half the time on deep reds with 90 cha) turn around, start selo's, and let one of them hit u so your cyc pet starts hitting it. then run away as soon as you're hit. Twist heal and selo's while they fight each other and when charm breaks, start the circle again, rinse repeat until one starts running. Then u just charm your pet again, click on the uncharmed one and push your /petattack button (from the social that u alrdy made hehe). your pet will start beating down the other one and will eventual kill him or u might have to do it one more time. Once the kill is made, run away from the corpse til charm breaks, then snare your pet. Now u can go loot the one u just killed.

Now comes the boring part where u just run in circles twisting selo's, below, below on your ex-pet until he starts running. (At level 30 u get fulfils chant and u can start twisting selo's/chant/below to make it go much faster)Then u can just twist snare/snare/snare (cause it gets resisted alot) and melee him down to keep your weapon skills up.

You use the same method with hill giants except u have to pull to an area where there are no other groups hunting, I use the place by the lizard camp usually. HGs can be done at 29 (but not recomended, do SGs at 29 if u must do a giant),but level 30 is when HGs start to be very very good.

You will be encumbered very quickly with all of the plat and FS. I am a half-elf so the guise of the deciever (Lguk drop from ghoul assasin) is a huge help because it alows u to bank in ogguk. Sell your FS weps to the gnome merchant that sells jewels in the hut by the cyclops area.

You should get massive amounts of PP and exp if u just keep doing this, I have on a sullon zek even dealing with PKers and no cha jewelry. I imagine with cha jewelery and no worries, this would be uber easy :)

have fun and kill lots of stuff

Hi,
I just wanted to give my own personal opinion on this zone, so all you who havent been travelling through this parts of the continent of Antonica will maybe consider to do so.
It is one of the best zones I've ever been hunting in till now, Its a very easy zone to learn, I took one look at the map on EQatlas before I went there, and then I could tell where everything was when I got there.

If you play at a certain time of the day, you might not get a group. Then its nice to go to the gypsies near the Lake Rathetear zone and hunt for skeletons. For a early 30 level guy these are easy to kill and the experience is also good.

If you get a partner, the cyclopses around in the same ares should be rather easy to kill. I was there with another ranger the other day, and we kited the clopsies with bow till they was at 50% health, then we meeled them down to zero fast, losing about 1 red bubble of healt. This way you can get fast experience, and they drop some pp too if youre lucky.

Now, in a whole group you would want to go to the Hill Giant area. That area is why I love the zone. The hill giants are some rough bastards to take down, but in a well balanced group you should have no problem at all. They hit for max 92 damage, and have a rather huge amount of Hp's. Once youve brougt one down, they might drop as much at up to 60pp and usally a fine steel weapon that you can sell to the merchants in zone for around 5 plats each. After staying there for a few nights in a row you can easily scrounge up about 1k and an advancement in levels. However, the Hill giants drops good loot, the exp isnt as good as at the Trolls in this zone.

The trolls are actually not mobs, I think, they are just Troll Guards, guarding something that looks like a temple. They are popular target to good races who is here for the the exp and not the loot.

Anyway, there is also an area for the lower level characters here. However, I dont recommend to go there, as I've never really seen ppl below level 20 here, (as I can remember, that is) so I guess its a bad place for them or sumthing :-)

Summary: This is an awesome zone!! Whoever thinks it's now, haven't given it a fair chance, or is just stupid! (sorry, I didn't mean that) But anyway, dont say that the zone sucks before you've really given it a fair shot. If you do think it's a bad place, you may be a dungeon-guy, and in that case, I recomment to go to the basement in Estate of Unrest.
Thats about all I have to say :-)

sincerely,

Zenofex Stormcaller
Ranger of Erollisi Marr

You should wait before trying HG's. Head up to S Karana and get into a Spire group outside Splitpaw. Good exp--I went from 24 to 30 there and put about 600pp in the bank without much effort.

I know as a walker of shadows, that is our gift. To free beasts of the extra *ahem* weight they carry. It all depends on the "trader". Some will choose to give mercy and not loot while not grouped. Others will choose to loot only while not grouped. Then you have those that don't care.

I for one think that the way the class of Rogues should be played is that of the player. No two people are alike and I would venture to say that no two rogues are alike (considering the first statement).

What's the alternative? Considering Verant has made the class available and allowed us *ahem*, I mean "them" to steal from mobs while someone else attacks I don't really see anything that can be done to stop a rogue from aquiring a little something while you are getting your butt whooped. I mean let's be honest here... How many have run a train to a rogue just because you "thought" he was stealing from your kills?

A walker of shadows.
