This zone is often ignored by groups seeking XP becuase it never was an easy zone. Many adds, decent respawn times. Too many times I was in a solid group just xping away when all of a sudden we found ourselves over whelmed. One of the greatest dungeons ever though. Gotta be on your A game.

Four years ago no one went there. I bet I could go there today for six hours and see no one. It is kind of a shame, because I think some of these old "forgotten" zones could have some good revamping done with minimal effort by SOE. (Rather than continually add new zones - work on adding some things to the older zones.)

Just a passing thought.

That would have been 2005. On Stromm, in 05, Befallen still had groups going to it. Just sayin'.

OTOH, in 2013, a lot of these zones are ghost towns unless they're a hotzone or someone is running an instance or they do one of those temporary revamps.

It's funny, this used to be the beaten path, now, it's off the beaten path.

Please don't encourage SoE to screw up or screw with any more old zones. They've done enough damage already. Let things be the way they were so that those of us who want to come back and visit them will see them just as they were at the beginning.

This zone was packed in 1999 - 2000 and it was really fun. I was a Necromancer and this was one of the few places early on that I could make use of some of my undead only spells.

I remember it being fairly hard as well but what wasn't in 1999 when everyone was new and game knowledge was at a premium way before you could go to many sites and learn things... you had to play the game.

Keep killing the skeletal excavators and checking the wall with the glowing skulls on it. Once you have killed enough, a ghost will appear there (I think it is invis like shadowed men, so all you will see is a name in the air) and he will give you quest and ghostly bridle. You only get I think, two uses out of it before it poofs, though, and it doesn't run fast at all, so really only good if you want a screenshot of yourself on a horse if you can't afford to buy a real one. :-/

Alternatively, die next to the door on the first floor and you can use /corpse to pull your body through it. It's an extreme measure (often you'll find a Rogue practicing Lockpicking in the zone), but it's better than being stuck there forever :).

yes, the wand still drops...I have camped befallen several times since last post looking for quest items and junk. The same mobs still spawn, and the same stuff still drops, it's just that the zone is never camped, so the spawn rate for these clowns is nil...I've run through the zone and cleared the entire place waiting for SKs to pop for keys and necros to pop for wands and still waited hours for the spawn. It's a test of patience, my friend, but they do still spawn

The Story
# Dec 30 2002 at 7:25 PM Rating: Excellent
12 posts
Ok, first of all, Befallen is the ancient ruins of the Great Elven city of Takish Hiz. How do I know this? Well just go around EQ asking hundreds of NPCs dozens of general questions, and you eventually learn some lore. (Aside from the lore that is given in quest speeches, or written in books, etc.). The zone itself is a the only portion of the palace of Takish Hiz left over from Solusek Ro's destruction of the Elddar Forest on Tunaria (Now called Antonica), when the elves fled to Faydwer to make their new homes there.

This whole thing with the dark elves was a series of off and on game events that had something to do with an immortal chick that spawns at the VERY bottom of the zone. I was there once during the dark elf occupation on a guild raid, and we just couldnt get her to die, even with ten or so 40+'s killing her. She didn't fight back, but now no longer spawns, I am assuming she was the central portion of the reason the dark elves occupied the zone (some kind of quest).

The zone was originally even lower level. There never used to be those excavators or even the necromancers. Back just over four years ago, RL, when I first started eq, (just after beta) the zone was even more deserted. There were only skellies, sk's, and rats, with the odd appearance of Commander Windstream, and the Ignot of the Ardent gnome guy for the cleric quest...

But sometime between then and now they upped the mob count in the zone a bit, and added the dark elves occupying it every now and then. (Which made it a very deadly zone, having a ton of little harm touch bandits running around).

Even more recently though they added the excavators, the cracked skeletons, the burnt ones, and the Bridle quest which gets you a lore no drop bridle that summons a horse, and YES that quest DOES work, if you do it right. (do the token quest first, then do the bridle quest).

-----------------------

There are still other remains of the old city of Takish Hiz scattered all over Eastern Antonica... take a look at the desert of Ro, which used to be the heart of the elven population at one time, before Solusek desertified it. See all those little towers and pinnacles? There is alot more going on than first meets the eye, once you delve into the Norrathian History books, you can find alot of neat stuff (/ooc Yes I know its just a game, but there is lots of story behind some of it, which makes it more fun to some people, so please save your flames)..

Anywho, I'm still trying to figure out the significance of the Spectre Island, and whether or not that structure has much to do with the lost city or not....

Bye for now!

Actually, after the DEs were removed it used to be a good low-level dungeon until the recent change which put necros everywhere and raised the level of many of the skellies; they used to be a relatively rare spawn, but now it's hard to fight any dark-blue mob without some green-con necro healing it, and even green necros can be a pain to kill with their DoT spells.

Doesn't help, of course, that the level range now overlaps with Paludal, where you'll get better XP.
Ima kill em!

This is a quest so u can get a 1 charget lore item no drop horse that runs at the speed of jboots.....

ok go to befallen where it starts and on the first level where the skulls have light coming from there eyes a skelentional foreman spawns there after u kill him a ghost (his name Sir Arname Arcane)will spawn (kinda like a mage airpet) Hail him he will tell u some story (sorry forgot what he says) then u must type THIS EXCATALLY "I sense a deep pain within you, ghost is there some way i might assist you so you may find eternal rest?"

after that he'll say moer text

and then type "i will perform any task that will cleanse this place"

He'll give u more text that says "Take this to the [Kights of trooth| or [The Dead] which ever city u can enter...

As the sexy troll that i am =) i said "I will take it to The Dead" ...... He gives u a note and ghostly birdle that is a no drop no rent lore item that has 1 charge of summon horse on it

and he'll give u some text telling u to take it to Xon (forgot last name) he's in the necro dark elf guild con dubious to me and i still could do it... well u hand the note and the birdle to him and u get a No drop Lore Birdle of Sir Arname Arcane.. that has 1 charge of summun horse (jboot speed)... Not bad if u want to try out the horse and don't feel like spending 8k or 17 aa points =) just may oppion

Can anyone else confirm that this is an actual quest and you can get a bridle from the ghost?

It's just kind of hard to beleive that a quest would involve having to type:

"I sense a deep pain within you, ghost is there some way i might assist you so you may find eternal rest?"

How in the world could you have possibly figured that out?

Yes, it is a real quest, and I did get the bridle: I think the text came from the paper role-playing game, or a strategy guide.

Kind of sad, though, as someone was camping the mobs for three hours, didn't get the quest guy to spawn, they logged, and the quest guy spawned a few minutes later... at least it saved me having to camp them for hours :).
New Skeletons
# Aug 19 2002 at 4:48 PM Rating: Decent
The new skeletons are part of a new quest on the first level. go into the main room on the first level on the back wall where the glowing skulls are will be the skeleton foreman. Kill him then a new NPC character by the name Sir Arname Arcane (not sure if that is the exact spelling or not) will pop hail him he will give you a story of what the undead are up too in Befallen.

This zone is totally devoid of Players most of the time on some servers. Grab all the mid teens waiting to get into the Highpass orc group and come on down here, crowd control is much easier despite the fact that it is a dungeon.

If your group gets wiped beyond door 3, drop down the well by Lrodd to get to corpses (invis and invis undead on the person CRing the corpse with the keys is the best way to go)

Don't stick in the area beyond lock B, pull to the larger rooms beyond the T junction that splits between the ogre and human SKs. This way if you get wiped by the Ogre SK, you only have to kill the 1st SK to get the key to get back (easily doable on spells alone by any semi-competent 15th level caster).

Ogre Players will not fit beyond the rock in the corridor leading to the Ogre and Human SKs.

Watch out for the pits in the Human SK room. Be very careful there. Pull via spell or ranged weapon, not via run up and melee.

Have a cleric in your group. Clerics, Necros and SKs are much more powerful in here than anywhere else.

Druids are much weaker here than anywhere else.

Its advisable to keep at least 1 set of spare keys in the bank, and at least two players in any group should have keys (everyone should have keys really).

I have just recently visited befallen with my lvl 19 Rouge to get my lock pick skill up. The last time I was there, only the Loord Skelly gave me experience from the first floor. Now I go in and even the first mobs at the entrance are giving me exp. There are enough Dk. Blues past the first locked door to cause alot more trains then normal too. I accidently dropped hide and was aggroed by 5 mobs that were close to me. Almost killed me, if it weren't for the gracious LoH from a Dwarf Pally.

So, my question is: If our befallen on Drinal is still the new version, does the same loot drop even though you need higher lvl Characters to enter the zone? For that matter, is the loot even worth it for these higher lvl peeps?

Any comments on either of my statements is most welcome. Perhaps this is a good place to post which version your server has.

I am Submiting this document to help all of you level 14-16 level up really fast.
Ok, get a group of however many people you would like, Try to get a bard and a cleric, the best couple for this, and go to befallen. Zone.
And when you go in immedietly turn at the first right and hug the wall. Kill the follower, and go into the room to the first right. There will be a long hall, that will be your medding hall, were you restore Hp and Mana. When you are done medding, Go down the rest of the hall and take a right, keep going and you will see a skeleton type thing called a Raised Servant. kill it and medd if you have to in the medding hall, but if not just turn directly around, and go into the door to your right and go straight for the Dark Follower, then the Defiled corpse, Then the skeleton type thingy called the Raised Servant. Medd in the Medding Hall if you have to, and go through the other door. and inside will be a Raised servant, and two defiled corpses. Kill them and go to the medding hall for about 5 minutes or untill everything pops again.
Each one of these are a route and each sould give you about half a bubble untill level 16. Keep doing this and believe me it is worth it. In barely any time (about one half our or so) i made it from level 14 to 16. REALLY GOOD EXP!!!
Good Luck)

As a drawf pally, I owned the 1st and 2nd(lvl 15ish) floor, useing kodiak claws, shiny brass shield(from CB), and other stuff you would aquire from adventuring. I could'nt get past the first door to easly on the third floor, you'll need a good high teens group for third floor action.

It was great when i got my first spells, just cast on a weak skele and when they attack just keep casting until out of mana, then just kill with sword. that said, learning/useing all your spells will help you a lot!

Im pretty sure I hunted in old Befallen, as a dwarf pally i owned(useing my spells, a shiny brass shield i think it was, and kodiak claws) the first and second floor in my low and mid teens. the third floor is much much harder and you'll need a group in the high teens if you want to go farther than the first door.

It was great when I got my first spells plenty of super crappy skeles to practice on. just cast and they will probly attack you, but wont do much damage, keep casting what ever you want till out of mana then just kill it with sword easly. With that said learning/useing all your spells will help you a lot!!
The Reversion of Befallen
# Sep 24 2001 at 11:42 PM Rating: Decent
Well it sounds like Befallen has reverted back to it's original self. I know it has on Xev server and I've heard the same from most of the other servers. I just hope Illia held on to the old zone info since it's now correct again.

I have been hunting Befallen for a couple of weeks now. On Seventh Hammer it is the new Befallen with the DE's. Great xp (if you don't die from trains lol), and the best loot I have found yet. However, I can't seem to get the first key. Is it still in the same place? All I ever find in that room is a reanimated skeleton. Is there a place holder for the key holder? Once by mistake I went past the locked door (it was opened), and as it locked behind me I knew it would be a while before I got my corpse back (and it was lol). Thanks for any help,

The Shadow Knight has the key. The room where the Skele Llrod spawns (the pit is there), just before you hit that there is a door and a room on your right. And a smaller room off of it. He spawns in there. My BF and I killed him twice (with higher level druid friend to keep us alive) me at 12, him at 7. The SK is about 11 or 12th level. He does Harm Touch right off for around 50hp, I think it was. Maybe a little less.
Me and pet took on the SK while cleric (bf) dealt with the pet. SK didn't drop the key both times we killed him, I don't think. We didn't go after him a 3rd time, but I would guess, given need of key, that it is probably a 1 in 2 drop or something fairly common like that. I would guess that he was on a 15 min timer, but I didn't really time it. We killed him, killed other things on floor, kill Llrod, then killed SK again. Didn't notice a place holder.
All this was on Quell. Don't know how it varies server to server.

Veeshan's befallen
# Sep 15 2001 at 6:37 PM Rating: Decent
I've been playing in befallen on the veeshan server for the past two days and the hardest part is the SK's. So, this server is old school Befallen and pretty easy for mid-teens characters. So for those of you that were wondering, there it is...

Old to New, what is the switch?
# Sep 03 2001 at 5:32 PM Rating: Decent

On Morell-Thule, I have seen Befallen go from Old to New to Old to New to Old... This suggests there is some in-game quest switch, possibly connected with the Dark Elf schism - Kithicor faction fighting against Neriak faction - also connected with the DE camps in WC that appear and dissapear coincident to the Befallen switch. When the DE "princess" in the bottom of the New Befallen is freed (and I'm not sure how that is done) Befallen switches back to Old. Any information on which quest is responsible for the switch would be most appreciated.

I play on the Prexus server and was getting great xps from soloing in Befallen as a DE Hangout. Friday night with all the server connection problems, I logged out, only to return about 5 hours later and find that Befallen has reverted back to the Skellie and Giant Rat show. Anyone know why this has happened? I thought there was a storyline with the new Befallen.

I logged on last night and was suprised myself to find that Befallen has gone back to its old self. Maybe they're designing a new Befallen? In my opinion, I think the drastic change of pace in putting all the DE's there was too much for all the newbies who loved to hunt there.

Key holder is Aeska, a DE SK.

Her spawn location is NOT the pit room where the old keyholder spawned, but in a room on the way there. The second room from the hallway at the bottom of the spiral stairs, on the right.

Have fun!

What's Going on with Befallen?
# Aug 23 2001 at 3:43 PM Rating: Default
I liked the old Befallen. It was the best place for a dark elf cleric to hunt before they changed it. But then then made it into this chaotic mess where you can't survive if you're still able to get experience from the mobs. People over level 50 were dying on the top floor!! So I moved to North Ro to look for a derv group.

A few levels later a young cleric friend starts hunting there. I was baffled at how his lvl 14 cleric was soloing the second floor of deadly Befallen when a lvl 49 necro friend was slain there near the entrance. Until I go check it out. They changed it back to the way it was before!! No dark elves on the top floor--just a bunch of skellies that were green to a little lvl 12 chanter.

A few levels later my cleric friend starts complaining that they messed up Befallen. I go with her to check it out. Lo and behold, it was back to necros and sks on the top floor, but not quite as nasty as they used to be.

What's going on here? Is Verant confused about what they're doing with this zone?

They changed the new Befallen back to the old Befallen and then back to the new befallen. =)

Oh, I'm level 31 and I can solo near the area where the third key drops, so it is do-able.

Hope that clears things up a little...

The dagger is dropped off of 'a thurmatoligist'. Got it just last night my self on The Nameless. The thurmatoligist who was wielding it also had on Goss robes when we killed her. it was a pretty rough fight for a 16 pally and 16 cleric. I had to LoH and she was OOM. We both had about 2 bubs of life left after the fight. there was the thurmo, her pet, and an Icebone spawned when we attacked.

The Thurmo that we killed was a female Eruidite, not sure if it's always like that, but the dagger was visable in the fight.

Not sure,

If yu get a partner or two, you might be able to hold the area just past the first locked door, as mobs there still gave exp to me at lvl 25.

This of course is the new Befallen I'm talking about and now I'm hunting further down away from help....
Does the mallet *head* still drop from the Elf Skellie? And
# Aug 19 2001 at 4:17 PM Rating: Default
On the Bertoxx server, we still have the "new" Befallen, which can be a firehose of XP for mid-20s if you can take a room on the 3rd floor...

But two questions.

First: I seem to reliably get the Thex Mallet hilt from the Elf skellie, but I have yet to see the head drop. Does it still drop from him? And why doesn't the bastige spawn more often? (grin).

Second: I was in the zone whene there was a message to the effect of "the Baron removes the veil of invisibility from Lanys T'Vyl's corpse...". Wot th' devil was that about? Any details on the quest?

A bit of strategy...
# Aug 17 2001 at 10:43 PM Rating: Decent
Well I have taken all my characters in there to level and the good loot! Anyway I go LATE at night and I have the place to myself when I feel like soloing. An occasional high level comes in for the named mummy for the mullet quest. I kill the same 3 mobs, the 2 at the top, and 1 on the left side bottom stairs. The one on the right I never touch when alone.. he has a tendacy to run off when attacked and gets all his friends involved. FUN. In a group now that is different, we usually kill everything on the floor and then stay in the key room. the exp is great and the loot isin't too bad! Many a times I've ran errr walked out of there encumbered with GP and SP.. It never fails that someone that has never been there attacks the right bottom and I automatically run for the zone...

Im getting ready to switch to a less crowded server than the one I am now on. Im starting a new character and am looking for a not so crowded servrt with the DE befallen because it is one of my favorite places to lvl in my mid teens. What would be a good server for this. I want to make sure I don't join a server with the old befallen. Thanx in advance for any response.

For an uncrowded Befallen you might wanna try Xegony server. I have been there for about a week or so now and unless I gather some of my guildies together to raid, there might be one or two others in Befallen. But that is just my observation.

I don't think any servers carry the old befallen anymore, now we're stuck with the souped up death-like befallen from hell ;). As for finding an unpopulated server just hit the "players online" button in the server selection screen in Eq itself. Just don't play on Saryn. Befallen is my playground =)

A friend of mine (48 necro) and I (45 sk) decided to check out this dungeon the other day.

We didn't have any problems but it has changed a bunch. Here is what we found:

The spawn rate is CRAZY. Most mobs seem to spawn in 5-8 minutes. It is not uncommon for a new mob to spawn before it's corpse pops.

The named spawn a little slower (maybe 20 minutes).

I had the 1st key in the bank so we didn't have to camp it.

The 2nd key drops on the 2nd floor(in the room with the rounded north wall) off of a named caster.

The 3rd key drops where the ogre sk was(behind the 2nd door) off of a named monk type guy.

We got a couple guardian daggers(off guardians). A ton of Pristine dropped off of the casters on the 3rd floor(no drop so we left it). We got a couple nice no drop necklaces off of the sk type across the hall from the 2nd door.

On the 3rd floor are a couple named spawns and now Cmdr Windstream spawns every 10-15 minutes and drops the container for the THEX mallet every time.

We killed everything on that level except for the captive (could find anything to free her).

Oh .. PP is crazy. I picked up about 200 pp (or equiv. in gp) in about 2 hours and maybe 50 various gems.

Hope this helps.
