Just recently started playing EQ2, mostly soloing since I'm busier now and don't know anyone in-game... I was just thinking of this zone and came here to look at screenshots. I remember around 1999-2000 this zone had every orc group camped with a waiting list, there were noob bodies lying around, and the 'tunnel' was filled with people socializing and auctioning. I had a lot of RL friends playing and I made lots of real friends online. It's just not the same anymore. Especially since I recently went back on a trial account and it's a complete ghost town now.

I (level 30 bard) was in EC today on my way to do the Befallen mission, and I got gacked by a tier'del scout. The people joining me for the mission all got killed too. So one of my guildies took his level 65 epic rogue in there and some of them conned white to him. Not to mention they are invisable untill they attack you. The scouts are rogue, but there is a generall out there too, and he is an SK, because he harm touched one of my group mates for over 1100 points. So beware guys, these guys hit hard and hit fast. But as far as I could tell they don't see through invis. They are also in West commonlands. I think that these are very pour additions to a newbie zone.

I have a lvl 11 chanter that I take here often and every lvl from 5-11 has been acheived in this zone. I get into 6 people groups and we go to one of the orc camps and we level very rapidly. I havn't had any problems with getting exp. in this zone.

Right click on the mob you are planning to kill. If the message you get comes back in green text, you will get no exp. Look for messages in light blue, dark blue, or white text. Yellow text means the creature is slightly higher level than you, andwill be tough to kill. Red text typically means leave it alone.

Having said that, the orcs should give experience at level 10, unless you are killing orc pawns. Also, willowwisps and darkweed snakes should still be good exp.

At lvl 10 you should be getting exp at the orc camps. Make sure that the people your grouping with fall within your level range. I think a lvl 6 would be the lowest to group with you at lvl 10. And yeah don't kill orc panws, kill the orc centurions and oracles that spawn in the tents. If your soloing, try the young kodiaks that wander and the lions, not lionesses.

Shadeweavers is good, if you can handle the laggy graphics. If not, the old standard is dervs in north ro til about 13 or so, then Oasis of marr in orc alley, or hunting gators

Somewhere around 16 or so, head to paludal caverns, the experience there is the best in the game I have experienced.

Well, as far as the buffs go, PoP lets you zip up to PoK for buffs, from EFP, then back down, and you can pick up some pretty good buffs in PoK, from the folks waiting to head into the PoP planes.

i think the orc camps are the best place to fight.im lvl 9 and i amc doin fine.im a druid wood elf. i went there when i was lvl 7. you dont need a big group to whipe out all the orc there though if you are lvl 7 some will be red and some cast.if you are below lvl 10 you should have a group with you. the chief will probaly be red to you. you should stay a distanse away from the camp so they all dont go agro on you if you sit down.you dont need to go to far away from it. you can get pretty close.you can hunt solo almost everywhere.the orcs get you better faction with the good races and money to. i think the orcs are the best mob to kill because you get better faction, money , and good exp all in one. if your a low lvl you should fight next to the fp zone.if you are a good race i you anything is gould but if your looking for money i suggest you kill orcs and willowhisps. whillowhisps often drop greater lightstones and they sell for pp. another good place to fight is in the sand. you can be as low as lvl 7 (i think) to hunt there. you should be realy carfull you should watch out for griffens they kill almost everything they see. all the mobs in ec are from lvl 1-20.

200pp sounds ok for EC, I personally wouldn't pay that much, but if you find an upper level Rogue that wants it bad enough, 200pp would be ok. Normal going price I've seen on The Nameless is around 100-125pp.

You don't need someone else's eq, you can get your own. This is the best zone in the game for newbies. At your level, you can kill spiderlings for silk, bats for wings and skeles for bone chips. Players will be buy these all the time (especially the silks) and before you know it, you'll have a good chunk of change. Plus you can kill bears and wolves for pelts (a HQ bear pelt can fetch up to 30pp on Saryrn Server, and can be dropped by a black bear, easily killed at lvl 7). Then run in to North Freeport and buy some armour and weapons :)

Happy Hunting!

At level 5 lots of things in EC will be either green or red. There are black bear appropriate for your level, or puma - if you group. The other option is to head through the tunnel and pick off orc raiders (level 4 or so) in North Ro.

find a couple of friends around your level and head to an orc camp, or you could start fighting young kodies and stuff, either with a small group or just solo...i said with a group becuase i have never played a rogue and don't know how strong they are.....but if you have a small group at the orc camps you will get some good experience i think...but i alwyas liked fighting young kodies becuase they hit hard and fast and it was funner to me....but you choose.....hope this helps some...

Hunting Guide

This place has great hunting! Here is my guide:

<Lvl 3-7> Here there is not too great hunting but some skellys if your careful and high enough level, tough they may train, so watch out.

There is also a bear/wolf hunting, and you can sell pelts for some quick cash or learn how to sew.

<Lvl 8-11> If you are level 8 you should stick to big, higher level orc groups for orc hunting. A level 8 orc group will eventually get wiped out by leggos.

9-11 has great orc hunting and can group.
There is also wisp hunting and their loot is GREAT! but for 11 they can be a little bit of a challenge without root or a pet, but at 10 and 11 you can solo wisps for greater lightstones.

<Lvl 12> There is really not much to solo except the orc on the hill at orc 1, and some Kodiaks.

NOTHING EXCEPT FOR GROUPING TO TAKE ON SHIN REE UNTIL YOU CAN SOLO SHIN.

<Lvl 40+> First off, at this level there is not any real reason to be here, except for griffs

At lvl. 3 I packed up my things and left kaladim for freeport, so I have some experience with the East commons. First off, kudos to "edmunds guide...", it really is excellent. Now, when you finally are ready for the jump from West Freeport to the commons, I suggest you begin with wolves, fire beatles, and spiderlings (those little spiders will mob!). Also, avoid the temptation to take out the sparkley green willowisp (if you haven't already learned this the hard way). As soon as you get to the point where everything before the first two inns is relatively easy for you, follow the wall on the left (coming out of freeport) until you reach the tunnel. The EC tunnel is a common gathering place, and it's best to remember it's direction from wherever you are, as you will surely be running trains there soon!
Now that you have moved past Freeport's zone line, you should be at around lvl six or seven. At this point, I would suggest that you ignore the temptation to group, and just take it solo for a while: find the undead ruins (I suggest you don't go to close to them). Now memorize the area between the ruins, the tunnel and the forest. This desert will be your hunting ground. Running back and forth between these, find pumas and skeletons, but be careful to only get lone skellys! They will mob! While you do this, you should glance occasionally into the wooded area, if you see a black bear, con it and kill it--HQ pelts auction for 30pp (I've seen them go for fourty on the Nameless server). Ignore those pesky little bixies as well. They tend to get right up in your face, but they're not aggro, and killing them lowers your faction with "good" races. Continue to keep to this area until you reach Lvl nine.
At level nine, you're ready to find a group and camp the orc (i believe the plural of orc is orc--kinda like how the plural of sheep is sheep--"orcs" just doesn't sound right). You can go about doing this a number of ways, but it's best to just shout it (e.g. /shout Lvl. 9 Warrior LFG). After getting your group (or if you don't fear lions, before you get your group), head out to Orc1. You can find this by going to the freeport zone line, and following the wall on the right. Once you reach Orc1, if you're a tank, I highly suggest you continue following the same wall, until you reach Orc2, and then try and find the inn between the two orc camps---the merchant sells longbows and arrows (i can't imagine pulling without them). Now if it's open, go to Orc2 and get a full group if possible. Make sure you stay well away from the camp until you get at least four people in your group--when you first get there is when you need the most people, as the orc have had time to spawn. This is my camping suggestion, and if people would follow this, the whole process would go more smoothly: THE TANK ALWAYS PULLS!! I've been in many a group in which the wizard casts as soon as something spawns, so everything aggroes on him--you want things to aggro on the strongest character! Orc camping is going to be the major experience gainer in EC. You can at least get to twelve from camping orc.
At twelve, if you like, you can get in a small group (or just get a pally to partner with--anything that'll cure disease) and go to the undead ruins to get some revenge for all of the pain you were caused when you were just tryin' to kill some puma :). Just make sure you have something to cure you of rabies! However, if you don't want to play with the zombies, I suggest you go to the West Commons after level eleven---grouping with a pally you can at least get through the first floor of Befallen (just watch out for Skeleton Lrodd!).
Hope I could help! May Brell Serelis grant you strength!!!

two or three levels ago. Although I recommend North ro instead for someone your level. get in a Derv group, or hunt the desert tarans and Giant Scarabs. BTW Scarabs usually con higher than taran,s but seem to kill you less, unless you've got good poison resist gear. Also, madmen are good for this level, but watch out for the ones that cast spells, they're much harder.

Kodiaks, darkweed snakes, lions, zombies, all give exp for this level. If your a twink and feel like these are not challenging enough, go to north desert of ro. BTW if you hunt the orc camps, you can get exp. from the belts they drop in Freeport. Warrior guild leader for faction with good groups, militia leader for bad. Warrior guy is cain darkmoor. don't know other. I got 1 full yellow bubble with 10 belts at level nine. I had collected them at 8, headed to city when I dinged, and turned in belts! Also, if you hunt orc one, the Legionnaires give way more exp than the centurions. Also can find at orc two, but nowhere near as often.

Not true i came to East Commons at 9 from innothule swamp. Long journey but i heard it was worth it. I made it to 11 killing only asps rattlers and zombies. I never visited an orc camp in this time. Just turned 11 today and i plan to stay maybe to kill mummies and ghouls. The orc camps r way too over rated they are always camped and when Shin Re comes out on your 7-11 group you better run.
RE: are orcs the only thing to hunt at lvl 9 here???

9 can be a little tough in EC. You no longer get xp for shadow wolves and black bears. On the other hand, lionesses are starting to get a little easier, and you can even take the weaker lions with a little luck. Many Giant Scarabs and Giant Spiders will be blue to you now, although be warned that the spiders can hit surprisingly hard. I would only fight the lowest of blue Darkskin Snakes, and only if you had a stack of bandages handy as the poison is pretty nasty. Pumas on the south (desert) side are doable, provided you /con them first to get one appropriate for your level.

Avoid the Young Kodiaks unless you are grouped.

11 is a little high for orc camps. I hunted the orc camps grouped at level 7 and 8, with a group of similar levels. By 11 you should be able to solo willowwisps (my cleric could). However, an 11 is more suited to north ro. Not too much gives good exp at 11 in east commons.

North ro. At 10 you should be in a group, but can probably pick off giant scarabs on the edge of the sandy area for decent exp. If grouped, go after dervs, but DO NOT ATTACK Dorn. He's a named Derv who spawns at Derv 1, cons about 16, and can kick the butt off a level 17 palading with a 14 cleric healing him. I know, I was the cleric. Luckily I gated with my last mana and lived, but not so good for the Pally. He was almost dead, and Dorn was still at 80%. Also, for a small group at 10, the Desert tarans still give some exp, and madmen are ok exp, but con first cause some are tough. Watch out for shrivelled mummy's, which can be tough without a cleric, and if you see a sand giant, run for you life, straight for the zone!

At level 8, orcs still give good experience, but make sure if you turn in belts, do it to warriors guild and not militia. The faction from militia includes a minus to priests of marr, which control the freeport cleric guild. not a good faction for a cleric to lower, especially since there are only four quests to raise it (it almost sounds like I know from experience hehe - care for a piranha anyone?). However, if you turn the belts in at warrior guild, stop as soon as your guard faction hits dubious.

Also, pumas, lionesses (don't try to solo lions, unless you've got some help, or are a little twinked), asps (poison shouldn't be a problem to a cleric, just mem cure poison first), rattlesnakes (I think still gave exp at 8).

Grouped with a warrior or other tank, or with a caster and pet of similar levels, you should be able to hunt lions, maybe kodiaks, giant spiders (again mem cure poison), giant beetles (whatever the proper name is), the skeletons behind inn 2, probably the zombies too (although they're easier at 9, after you get the better undead spell). Watch out for the ghouls. You will get killed by these even at 10 or 11. If they aggro you, cast divine aura and run for the guard (it helps to know where he is if the ghouls have spawned).

Also, it helps to get someone to SOW you so if the fights lost you can run to zone, or to guards.

Have you tried the area behind Inn 2? I am a lvl 8 Ranger and generally find hunting good there. Beware of Asps that con blue however. Their poison works fast.

Inn Numbering System
# Aug 24 2000 at 4:54 PM Rating: Good
There are four Inns in East Commonlands, and getting to the right one to meet someone, or avoiding a Griffin when you hear people shout, requires knowing how they are referred to in the zone.
The Inns are numbered along the path leading FROM Freeport. Along the path from town you first see some huts, these are not an Inn. Next you'll find Inn 1, which the road does not get very close to. Then there is a hut, sometimes called the halfway house. Then there is Inn 2, which the path runs real close to, and which has the undead ruins behind it. Then there is Inn 3 right before West Commonlands (the hut just east of this sells many gems and such, including Mage components, plus tiny daggers, batwings and other spell components). Between the Orc Camps, along the north wall is the Hidden Inn (the hut just West of this sells arrow supplies, but no bow supplies and no fletching kit since they changed arrows).
Some sources number the Inns by the distance from Freeport, but since you cannot see the hidden inn from the path, under this system the third Inn you see is "Inn 4".
I start far too many characters, and so I spend alot of time in EC, and have only heard two or three people in all that time refer to Inn 4, while I have heard hundreds of references to the Hidden Inn. As is often the case, the system that sounds good on paper will just get you confused in the real world. There is no Inn 4.
Also, the first Orc Camp from town, where Lord Shin Ree sometimes spawns, is Orc 1, the one right by the West Commonlands border is Orc 2.

Hi, everyone.

This is the zone in which I spent most of my young career (5th-12th levels approx.), having started in Freeport. A great zone from a balance standpoint, with two glaring exceptions which need to be pointed out first thing:

(1) The griffins (roaming)--Occasionally, more than one of these can spawn at once, in which case all bedlam breaks loose. Given that this is a low-level zone, the watchword is avoid, avoid, avoid. However, there are generally a few high-level types who come to EC for the specific purpose of hunting a griffin without interference from the remaining fauna, but you can't depend on them to be handy all the time. You should be at least 41st level if you want to solo these, or take a group between 33-37. One other note--they have a really odd aggro setting. I have run directly underneath (!) a griffin before, and nothing. Sit down, though, and you're toast.

(2) Ghouls (fairly common spawn--undead ruins only): A little less of a bother because they don't move about the zone. However, they're 13th to 17th level, higher than any other monster besides the griffins, proc a GhoulRoot ability which fixes you to the spot, and are immune to non-magical weapons. Once again, given that this is a low-level zone, this can quickly turn tragic, especially if someone pulls one toward the inn you happen to be resting at. Listen for the Yoda-like laughter and run if need be...

Now, that having been said, there are three camps in the entire zone. In decreasing order of desirability:

(1) The Central Orc Camp ("Orc 1"): This one is situated between the only inn off the main road ("Inn 4") and the plague village, almost due north from Inn 2. Orc spawns here can get hairy, as the timing is pretty fast. Provided you have a good group, a Lull spell, or a decent puller (rangers work famously here), you can keep a fairly orderly stream of orcs coming. Spawns here are the orc apprentice (low-level caster), the orc centurions (grunts), the orc oracle (mid-level caster), and orc legionnaires (elite grunts), ranging from 3rd all the way up to 15th level. Most orcs drop the popular Deathfist Slashed Belts, which are quest items for both evil and good characters in West Freeport, as well as rusty weapons and cloth armor. The legionnaires, in addition, drop legionnaire pads (which used to be used for a now-broken Steel Warriors quest). The apprentices drop illegible cantrips (for an Academy of Arcane Science quest), and the oracles drop another illegible spell (for a quest based in Highpass Keep). About 80% of the orcs spawn in the center of the camp, and one or two of them pop up in the forest behind it. Good to know if you're coming from the rear.
In addition, a rare spawn will pop up occasionally, the orc weaponsmith, who is about equal to the legionnaires in fighting skill. He usually drops "Raw Short Sword 4", a quest item from the Weapons Delivery Quest in Freeport. The other three swords are on the floors of the tents, and respawn quickly after collection.
A little-known highlight of this camp is the ultra-rare spawn, Lord Shin Ree, who is approximately 23rd level. High-levels hunting griffins love to drop what they're doing and take Shin Ree down. He drops nothing special, however.

(2) The Western Orc Camp ("Orc 2")--located due north of Inn 3 in the NW corner of the zone. As Orc 1, only no ultra-rare spawns, and thus, marginally less desirable for higher-level campers. Also, no weaponsmith and no Raw Short Swords.

(3) The undead ruins--located due south of Inn 2 in the desert. Four spawn points, medium-fast respawn time. Available MOB's--skeletons, zombies, lesser mummies, ghouls. Best for a mid-level group (say 11-14) with magic weapons (or casters) that doesn't mind wading through a lot of skeletons before getting to the bigger game, solo paladins/clerics 16th - 20th level there to hunt ghouls, or a number of solo or small groups at one time, of varying levels, each assigned to a particular type of undead. Nice experience and occasional good loot. No quests are associated with the ruins specifically, although there is an Erudite quest requiring zombie skin, and plenty that need bone chips.

The East Commonlands were pretty good to me, and, if you know how to hunt, you can spend a lot of your younger "seasons" here. Salut.

Snakes in EC

If you can heal poison, or have some gear or spells that give you high res to poison, then I suggest hunting snakes from 8-12 or so. The Asps drop Giant snake fangs, a good pierce wpn, almost the best non magic peircer in the game.
If all the orc camps are full, killing snakes isnt a bad way to get some decent exp and kill time till a spot opens up.
Oh yeah, on most servers, EC is a Bazaar type zone, where people come to sell stuff. So turn auction off, dont scream at people to shut up ;o) And if you ARE auctioning here, USE /AUCTION!! Not /ooc or /shout. Please. ;o)

Rangers
# Aug 23 2000 at 11:50 AM Rating: Decent
There are several rangers who spawn by a large stone pillar towards the western end of the zone. They are around 28 - 30th level, and spawn in pairs. They lower faction with several druid groups which will eventually make you KoS to the druids at most druid rings, meaning you need to be invisible to get ports from druids, so they are probably more suited to characters of evil alignment.

Although they have somewhat low hitpoints, they do cast some nasty spells, and hit hard (72+) as well as using archery (which hits for 20 - 30). They also have a nasty habit of healing themselves back up once they get near death, which can often turn the balance of a fight in their favour.

As a necromancer, the exp here was amazing from 32 upwards partnered with another necro of similar level. They pop fairly fast, but die quickly and the spawn is manageable one split. Two casters will do well here all the way up to around 37 or 38, when it becomes possible to solo the pair (as a necro, at least). Melee classes are nearly useless here, due to the lack of healers willing to sacrifice faction.

Loot is excellent too - up to 4pp in cash, a FS weapon every time (quite often 2), a longbow on every second one or so which sells for 2pp, and the occasional gem, rawhide piece, chainmail piece, etc. There is a small hut nearby with a merchant inside who cons indifferent to most (if not all) players, who you can sell all your loot to between kills or once you get overweight.

I would suggest that it can be taken at a lower level, but the info on xp and loot is dead accurate, faction hits are the same as treants and druids, but you can never find a group here, which is really puzzling considering how good the camp is. Just my 2cp.

I love Altunic Jartin. When we camp orcs, I usually throw the rusty weapons to him, so he walks around duel weilding axes or something similar. I guess that doesn't help the evil races too much though. hehe

Group Strategy For Roaming Mobs
# Aug 22 2000 at 3:56 PM Rating: Good
One of the safest ways to hunt this zone, for group of levels 6-10, is to pull to the tree behind Inn 3, the one right by the West Commonlands zone border. Orc camps are fine and decent money when you sell the belts, but they are often camped, and tough to break by any group that isn't overpowered for the camp. Plus, an unlucky Lego spawn can kill the whole group.
Set up right by the tree, it's a big tree right behind the inn, have one party member run out and attack the mob you want, whether scarabs, giant spiders, wisps (if you can hit magic), or young kodiaks, and pull them to the rest of the group waiting by the tree. This is extremely safe for everyone but the puller, because the zone border is ten feet behind the tree if things go bad. And if the puller has Spirit of Wolf cast on him, or is a bard, it is safe for them too. Pulling lions and lionesses is less good because the puller will be hit and stunned on his way back. Also, Griffins do not go past the Inn unless trained, there are internal zone borders you'll notice if you spend as much time as I have here. The key to this strategy is that wandering mobs are unlikely to join the fight, which is the real problem with fighting in the middle of a zone.
A variation on this that shortens the pulls is to pull to the hidden inn, which is between the Orc Camps along the North wall. There is no zone nearby, but like the zone border to WC few creatures will wander into your fights if you move up the wall just a bit along side the Inn.
For both types of pulls, avoid the habit people get into of gradually moving away from the zone/wall, you lose the advantage of your spot if you drift away from the safer area.

Holding the orc camps isn't hard. Last week, the group I was in (2 level 6 warriors, 1 level 7 monk, and 1 level 8 druid held orc 2 for several hours. When we had multiple spawns, the druid cast a spell (root i think) on one, and we pulled the other. A full camp at orc 2 is only 3 orcs. We broke the camp with no problem and needed very little healing while holding it.

Yes, grouping is a great thing. BUT ONLY IF PEOPLE INVITE YOU INTO THE GROUP. I have sat at the tunnel or roamed around EC shouting that I am looking to join a group of people around my level and nothing has ever coem of it. People seem to forget when they came from to get where they are. And some dont have the common sense to know that they will get killed running around there by themselves.

I'll bet the other people shouting to join groups are thinking the same thing. Instead, try yelling group Looking for Levels X-Y. , or respond to the other people's shouts. Plus, then you get to lead the group.

I have yet to figure out how people on some servers number the Inns. On every server I play seriously there are 4 inns numbered based on their distance from Freeport, making #4 the one at the WC zone line and #3 what you are referring to as the "hiddn inn". Is it as bad with the derv camps in north ro?

On Rodcet Nife, most people I have spoken too call the "hidden inn" inn 4. The three on the other side of the zone are 1,2,3 based on distance from FP.
